The crew spent more than 200 days at sea and conducted three port visits in support of maritime partnerships with Seychelles, Italy and Mauritius. In port, more than 130 Sailors volunteered a total of 760 hours on six different community relations projects making repairs to community buildings, constructing playgrounds, and bonding with children from several

orphanages. “The Nitze Sailors are some of the most devoted and hardworking individuals I have ever had the opportunity to lead projects with,” said Lt. BALL CAP WEAR POLICY EXPANDS Chief of Naval Personne Public Affairs WASHINGTON

The Chief of Naval Personnel (CNP) announced July 11 a change to uniform regulations giving commanding officers discretion to authorize the wear of command ball caps with Navy Working Uniforms (NWU) Type I, II and III beginning Sept. 1. Initiated by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, this change is a result of Sailor feedback received at all hands calls and is part of Navy’s efforts to further empower command triads.

Currently ball caps can only be worn with the physical training uniform, coveralls and flight suits; with NWUs only when standing bridge watch and by command training teams during a training evolution. The 8-point cover remains part of a Sailor’s sea bag.

The change in wear rules for the ball caps, which will include Fleet leadership input, will be released in a NAVADMIN later this summer and will include occasion of wear rules. Sailors can provide feedback on uniforms to umo_cmc@navy. mil or usnpeople@gmail.com.

The amphibious assault ship Bataan has moved into the Persian Gulf, bringing the number of Norfolk-based warships in that body of water to six, the Navy said July 10. The other two ships in the Bataan's amphibious ready group - dock landing ship Gunston Hall and amphibious transport dock Mesa Verde - had already passed through the Strait of Hormuz and into the gulf. Troops from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit are embarked with the group, which deployed in February. The Bataan joins several Navy ships in the waters off Iran and Iraq, including the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush; guided missile destroyers Arleigh Burke, Truxtun and O'Kane; and guided missile cruiser Philippine Sea. The Bush, which also left Norfolk in February, has been in the Persian Gulf for about three weeks. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel ordered several of the Norfolk-based ships into the region in June as tensions unfolded in Iraq.
