YORKTOWN
Sailors at Naval Weapons Station (WPNSTA) Yorktown have taken the initiative to mentor and motivate their fellow shipmates in making smart decisions when it comes to personal responsibility with the formation of the command Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) council. The CSADD program is geared toward Sailors, 18 to 25 years old, to reinforce our culture of “shipmates helping shipmates” across the installation. Not only is the program used to encourage positive decision making, it
is also a great tool to help build leadership skills in young Sailors. “I joined CSADD to help sharpen my leadership skills and to help influence a new organization on WPNSTA Yorktown,” said Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Randy Cortes, the newly-elected president of the CSADD Council. Cortes is a watch commander in the Security Department at WPNSTA Yorktown. His goal for CSADD is to help improve morale at the installation through the various programs focused on young Sailors. “We want to help the ‘Command Triad’ promote Sailors making positive decisions,” he explained.

NEWPORT NEWS
Two Sailors assigned to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) stormed into a house and rescued an elderly woman from her burning home, in Downtown Newport News July 1. Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 2nd Class Devon Bishop and Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Jessica Jusino, both having just finished eating lunch at a nearby restaurant, saw a plume of smoke above the trees down the street before entering their vehicle. The Sailors decided to investigate. As they drove down the street toward the source, they came upon a stunned crowd standing in front of a private house with black smoke billowing out of the enclosed porch. “When we pulled up, we rolled down the window and asked the crowd if everything was OK,” said Bishop. “They said no, and that a lady was inside.” Fresh from completing general shipboard firefighting training at Naval Station Norfolk’s Firefighting Training School three weeks ago, Bishop and Jusino immediately jumped out of the vehicle, split paths down the sides of the house, looking for an entry point that was not engulfed in smoke or flames.
The Keep What You’ve Earned (KWYE) Fair, June 27, provided information to keep Sailors, Marines and DOD civilians healthy – physically, mentally, spiritually and financially – which can prevent making poor choices that could result in the end of a career
