USS KEARSARGE NAVIGATION PLOTS COURSE FOR SUCCESS By MCSN Derry Todd USS Kearsarge Public Affairs
ATLANTIC OCEAN
Itâs a multi-billion dollar warship, outďŹtted with some of the worldâs most advanced technology. Radar, sonar and GPS screens ďŹll the navigation bridge. Many of the tools of the trade have changed through time, but todayâs Sailor relies heavily on yesterdayâs concepts to get the ship from one location to another. In the center of the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsargeâs (LHD 3) navigation bridge, is a Quartermaster
(QM) with his eyes glued to a screen. He and his department are responsible for the safe navigation of the ship. âThe safe navigation of the ship is priority number one,â said Lt. Cmdr. Sam Herbst, the shipâs navigation ofďŹcer. âAnd that is my and the Quartermasterâs job to accomplish.â Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group (KSGARG) and the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) are currently conducting scenariobased exercises, involving synthetic geography.
