Seven Sailors finished the first Veterans in Piping (VIP) program offered by United Association of Union Plumbers, Fitters, Welders and Service Technicians (UA). The 18-week long program covered topics on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R) and welding on board Naval Station Norfolk. The VIP program, which is designed to help service members transition from the military back to the civilian workforce, teaches them marketable skills by offering them a possible career path.

“I think it is a tremendous program, specifically because it allowed us to be able to do this while we are still on active duty,” Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic (Equipment) William Gierke said. “You don’t have the lag time between active duty and trying to figure it out once you’re out and trying to start a new career.” UA boasts having the premier education training program in the industry

Naval Station Norfolk’s Saint Leo University installation had a grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a tour of the new facility, and a luncheon, May 20. Saint Leo University relocated from building U-40 to the Navy College building in efforts to provide its students with a campus-like atmosphere. According to Saint Leo University South Hampton Roads Education Center Director Larry Jones, students will be able to enjoy the amenities offered in campuses around the nation.
