TEAM NAVY TRIALS PREP IS UNDERWAY By Patty Babb Navy Wounded Warrior – Safe Harbor

Practice for the 2014 Wounded Warrior Team Navy Trials will kick off June 2 at Naval Station Norfolk. Approximately 70 seriously wounded, ill and injured Sailors and Coast Guardsmen are preparing to compete for a spot on this year’s Navy Wounded Warrior team. “I am really looking forward to meeting other service members with similar injuries
and experiences,” said Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Jaime Garza, who was injured in a training accident. “This is all new to me, and it’s exciting to know that this [opportunity] is out there for people like me.” The Wounded Warrior athletes will arrive in Norfolk on May 30. After a day of meetand-greet and informational events, practice will begin June 1. The athletes will train until the Wounded Warrior Team Navy Trials kick off June 4.

The annual Submarine Veterans of World War II Memorial Service was conducted May 22, at the Submarine Learning Facility (SUBLRNFAC), Naval Station Norfolk. Hosted by SUBLRNFAC, the event is held each year prior to Memorial Day. In past years, the service honored the 52 submarines and
the gallant Sailors lost during World War II, and the losses of USS Thresher (SSN 593), April 10, 1963, and USS Scorpion (SSN 589), May 22, 1968. But since the World War II submarine veterans were rolled into the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI) during the 2012 national convention, the ceremony also honors all submarines and submariners lost since the submarine’s force inception April 11, 1900.

Service members and civilians took to the pavement to honor the military in the eighth annual Red, White, and Blue 5K run, May 17. While many runners were dressed in red, white, and blue to show support for service members, the registration fees from the race were used to raise money to support military recognition programs and scholarships. “We focused on the military today,” said Rick Platt, president of the Colonial Road Runners and organizer of the event. “But we had a lot of fast civilians out here as well.” The first place overall finishers for the race were Victor Flemming, from Carrollton, Va., with a time of 16:20; and Karen Terry, from Hampton, Va., with a time of 19:00. “It’s a great day for a run today,” said Rebecca Miller, one of the race participants. “It was good to get out on the road and show support for our military.” Platt said that events like this encourage

community and socializing, fitness, and competition among area runners. The run was one of 23 races in the Colonial Runners Grand Prix, a race held to encourage runners to participate and compete in local running events.
The annual race is held to salute active duty military and veteran service members.
