Sailors took time to honor the mothers aboard USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) with a Mother’s Day dinner and presentation hosted by the Junior Enlisted Association, May 11. The dinner highlighted the importance of mothers everywhere and served as a time to honor the mothers that are serving as crew members of the Roosevelt during her current deployment. “We wanted the mothers on board to know that their sacrifice is a valued one,” said Cmdr. Jay Clark, commanding officer of USS Roosevelt. “It truly takes an extraordinary woman to be both a mother and a United States Sailor.” The events included a steak and lobster dinner and a custom Mother’s Day cake along with poems and songs performed by the crew, as well as cards written to the mothers from the crew thanking them for their service. “It is hard,” said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Shannon Hendricks. “I miss my children immensely, but I take comfort in the fact that I am doing something that they are proud of and understand.” Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Karina Gasca echoed the same sentiment. “It is unimaginably difficult to be apart from your children for many months at a time,” she said. “However, I remember that I am doing this all for them and that alone makes it all worth it.”

William French, Commander, Navy Installations Command. “You can visit the Ready Navy website and take steps to ensure that your families are ready to face a hurricane at home, particularly if they must face them alone should you be deployed.”

WASHINGTON

The Navy announced significant changes to the current advancement policy, including a new formula for the Final Multiple Score (FMS) that will be in effect for the next advancement cycle in fall 2014. In sum, the FMS changes increase the weight on areas where Sailors demonstrate superior performance and technical knowledge and decrease the value of longevity-based factors such as Service In Pay Grade (SIPG). Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens and Fleet Master Chief for Manpower Personnel Training and Education (MPT&E) April Beldo sat down to discuss why these changes were made and how they will impact Sailors.

SURFACE LINE WEEK (SLW) 2014 CHALLENGE Sailors, Marines and civilians from Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic and its tenet commands and subordinate units competed in the Surface Line Week (SLW) 2014 Challenge at Naval Station Norfolk and Joint Expeditionary Base Little CreekFort Story, May 12-16. » see A8

online You can find more information on hurricane/typhoon terminology and preparation strategies at www.Ready.Navy.mil, or follow Ready Navy on Facebook (www. facebook.com/ReadyNavy) and Twitter (@ReadyNavy).

Change #1: In the new FMS for E4 and E5 the value of your standard score (advancement exam) becomes the largest factor considered for advancement. For E6 and E7, performance mark average becomes the largest factor in determining Sailors’ FMS. To see the new Final Multiple Score breakdown, visit: http://tinyurl.com/kbr2swa. These changes mean performance will be measured differently for junior and senior pay grades to target advancement consideration on the qualities expected at those levels. “Our junior Sailors are out there doing the job they’ve been trained for, and leadership’s expectation of them is that they know their occupational skill, and we measure that with the standard test,” said Beldo.
