USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) got underway for friends and family members special cruise, May 2. “It’s great to see everybody out here to experience what their loved ones do on this ship,” said Capt. Andrew J. Loiselle, commanding officer of George H.W. Bush. “The families play a critical role in the ship’s mission through all the support they give to the crew. I always tell my Sailors, ‘It doesn’t matter if you’re married or not, everyone has a mother or cousin or someone back home who supports them and loves them,’ and it’s great so many of you were able to come in person today.” Many of the guests who came aboard were military veterans. Even those with prior Navy service found George H.W. Bush impressive. “I served from 1965 to 1967 on the USS Prairie,” said Don Kaiser, a retired machine accountant. Our ship was pretty big, but this is much bigger. This ship is like a city unto itself.” The airshow was the highlight of the cruise, giving friends and family the opportunity to see the Navy’s aircraft in action. “It was very impressive, I really liked all of it,” said Lisa Barger, stepmother of Aviation Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Eric Barger. “I loved the final formation when they all flew together. And even though I knew it was coming, the supersonic plane still made me jump.”

Green Run Elementary School staff members hosted a Military Children Appreciation ceremony, April 30, featuring guest speaker, Command Master Chief Eric T. Clark, command master chief at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana. Seventy-four students and their family members attended the event to show appreciation for the sacrifice that service members’ children endure. “The children of service members don’t know how important they are to the family and to the career of their mom and dad,” said Clark. “Seeing the impact in my life and the impact in some of my Sailors’ lives, I truly understand how important family is to the success of us in the military.”

The ceremony provided a chance for parents and teachers to present students with a certificate recognizing the sacrifices they make while their parents serve in the military. “This opportunity gave us the chance to recognize and celebrate not only our children but their families as well,” said Sheila Wynn, principal at Green Run Elementary. “We want to make sure that we show parents how much we support not only what they do as a parent but what they do to keep us safe.” The Month of the Military Child has been held every April since 1986 to acknowledge the role service members’ children play in the Armed Forces community. Green Run Elementary School dedicated the month of April to military children appreciation and the sacrifices that the families, and especially the children, make.
