NORFOLK

As day turns into night, lines of cars, filled with excited fans, start queuing up for the evening’s events. Signs and flags adorn the gates to the arena. Norfolk is no stranger to lines of military uniforms and accents from around the world, but there is a different feeling in the air, a certain note. That note was of the musical sorts, at the Virginia International Tattoo, April 23-26. The beat of a snare drum and eerie billow of a Scotsman’s bagpipes could be heard coming from each corner of Scope Plaza as men and women dressed in medal and ribbon decorated uniforms, watched in amazement. Since 1997, Norfolk has played host to military bands and drill teams from multiple nations. Once a year, the Tattoo brings time-honored international tradition to American soil for a four-day celebration of skill and music. The term “tattoo” derives from the 17th and 18th century military ‘return to quarters’ signal via fifes and drums. Evolving over time, “tattoo” now refers to the ceremonial performance of military music. The 2015 cast of the Tattoo included groups from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, NATO, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. Amongst the international cast, Virginia youth, high school and college performers graced the stage as well. “The kids really held their own up there,” said Susan Weston, a resident of Williamsburg, Virginia. “They were incredibly impressive. I couldn’t believe they were only in high school.”

the Warsaw Ghetto uprising in 1942. “Today is a somber day of remembrance, set apart to memorialize the horrific suffering and genocide against Your chosen people and the many others who, by their dissent, marked their demise as well,” said Lt. Jim Rutan, WPNSTA York-

town command chaplain. “If justice can even be served for such crimes against all humanity, we asked that You will allow both the living and the dead to witness a measure of it in our time.”
