Women, clad in white to represent the purity of those that lost their lives, fill a conference room at Drexler Manor on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (JEBLCFS), April 12. The women are Gold Star Mothers and what they have in common is the loss of a son or daughter who died in combat while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The gathering was for the annual Virginia-North Carolina department of American Gold Star Mothers (AGSM) meeting and a way for the women who share a common bond, to share their stories, and memories that they carry with them each day. Together they are a family and its together they share their grief and

Sailors from the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) volunteered their time to organize an Easter bunny visit and egg hunt with the Gatewood Program for Educating Exceptional Preschoolers (PEEP), April 15. PEEP is a school with the medical capabilities to administer proper care to students with developmental delays or physical handi-

caps. Through an ongoing relationship, Sailors from Theodore Roosevelt often volunteer throughout the year and during major holiday seasons. “We work with kids with all types of disabilities, from bipolar to cerebral palsy and all levels of autism,” said Jernelle Brooker, an instructor for PEEP. “They are referred to as developmentally-delayed because they may not get their label until later in life.” More than 20 Sailors work with PEEP, ranging
