USFF’s ‘Stewards of the Sea’ join Earth Day celebration Norfolk Zoo holds Earth Day Party for the Planet By MC3 Jesse A Hyatt Navy Public Affairs Support Element East
NORFOLK
The laughter of children and tiny voices float through the air in anticipation. Bubbles roll from the gate, bursting over waiting visitors as children reach for the soapy spheres. This could be any other spring day at the Virginia Zoo, but it isn’t, this is a party; A party for the planet, and the zoo invited everyone. This was the scene, April 18, at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk as the zoo celebrated Earth Day with its Party for the Planet, an outlet for zoo employees and guest volunteers to educate visitors on conservation efforts and wildlife awareness. U.S. Fleet Forces (USFF) “Stewards of the Sea” took part
in the celebration to provide education on the Navy’s efforts to preserve the oceans and seas around the globe. “We are out here really trying to let the public know that the Navy cares what happens to the waters we patrol everyday,” said Yeoman 1st Class Agileo Bello, from Houston, Texas. “I really think it is important that we tell people face-to-face, eye-to-eye, that we care. We post things online or put out commercials, but nothing sticks with people like a conversation.” USFF Stewards of the Sea used more than their words to keep people interested, the

Ike Sailors kick off SAAPM By MCSN Rachel E. Rakoff USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Public Affairs
PORTSMOUTH
Sea-going and shore duty commands alike will be adorned with teal ribbons, fliers and posters reminding Sailors that April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) “Ike,” kicked off their own recognition of SAAPM with a cake-cutting ceremony, April 9. This year’s 2015 SAAPM theme, chosen by the DOD is, “Know your part. Do your part.” “For us to rid this command of sexual assault we have to work together as a team,” said Stephen T. Koehler, Ike’s commanding officer. “We’re all shipmates. This is our family. If we

step up and do what’s right, if we intervene at the lowest level before something happens, then we can prevent these terrible things from happening.” In addition to recognizing SAAPM, the command has several programs that support the Navy’s efforts to eliminate sexual assault, such as the sexual assault prevention and response (SAPR) victim advocacy program and Bystander Intervention to the Fleet (BI2F) program. assault is a matter of leadership and looking out for each other by doing the right thing. “Treat each other as family,” Haywood said. “That’s a big key when it comes to the SAPR program – it’s all about helping people.” The SAPR program is designed to help prevent and respond to sexual assault by trying to eliminate it through education, compassionate advocacy and adjudication. The Navy seeks to prevent sexual assault through fleetwide training that promotes a safe culture throughout the Navy. SAPR victim advocates offer expertise by advocating on behalf of the victim after an incident. They provide assistance with obtaining medical care, legal and spiritual support, and obtaining off-base resources. The command is always looking for Sailors to become SAPR victim advocates. To become a victim advocate, Sailors must be a petty officer second class with their primary warfare designator. If a Sailor is a petty officer third class and wants to participate in the program, they must follow the exceptional Sailor guidelines of being fully qualified with warfare devices, no disciplinary action within 24 months and full endorsement by their chain of command.
