Clean the Bay Day is a Hampton Roads community event with thousands of volunteers participating annually. This event provides aid to improve the Chesapeake Bay watershed area. This is the 28th annual Clean the Bay Day and will be held from 9 a.m. until noon on June 4. To help make this the most successful Clean the Bay Day ever we are seeking volunteers from commands throughout Hampton Roads. Volunteers are needed not only for the cleanup of trash from shorelines and tributaries, but for collection of valuable data on the amount of trash collected. These efforts foster a cleaner environment for wildlife and provide information that helps officials find ways to prevent future pollution. Adopting a proactive posture, such as making Clean the Bay Day a command event, will ensure the greatest turnout of volunteers and heighten awareness of the need to protect the environment from pollution. All active-duty personnel and civilian employees and their families are encouraged to participate. Clean the Bay Day is a combined community and government demonstration of commitment to the restoration and preservation of the Chesapeake Bay. With more than 60 military installations in the Chesapeake Bay watershed area, a strong Navy presence in events such as Clean the Bay Day shows the Navy’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Your contributions will help make this 28th anniversary event the most successful Clean the Bay Day ever. Local area commands are encouraged to designate a command coordinator. Command coordinators will be responsible for seeking command volunteers and support, acting as a zone coordinator the day of the clean up, answering questions on Clean the Bay Day, and helping publicize the event. Commands are asked to provide the names of command coordinators to their installation coordinator no later than April 22. Installation coordinators include: ■ Naval Station Norfolk: Chief Air Traffic Controller Robert Rygg at 322-3439 or email robert.n.rygg@navy.mil;
