Students, faculty and staff at Norfolk’s Berkley-Campostella Early Childhood Center hosted Naval Station Norfolk Executive Officer Capt. Richard McDaniel as part of the “Principal for a Day” program March 17. McDaniel was invited to the school by Berkley-Campostella Early Childhood Center Principal Dr. Doreatha White. “We truly appreciate Capt. McDaniel’s willingness to participate in a day of teaching, learning, and observing the excitement of our academic rigor. His presence at the school had a huge impact on all of our stakeholders,” White said. “Everyone was discussing how exciting his visit was and we are all excited about a future partnership for our students.” McDaniel spent the day at the early childhood center talking to the students, teachers and parents, and learning about the challenges and opportunities of educating the students. “It is very evident that the principal and her entire staff have a clear vision and passion for this school,” McDaniel said. “They believe that the foundation for college education begins in prekindergarten and you can tell they focus on that vision with everything they do at the school.” The mission of Berkley-Campostella Early Childhood Center is to build a strong foundation for learning that is developmentally appropriate for all preschool students including social skills, communication skills, motor skills and academic skills as provided in a safe and secure environment by parents, community volunteers, faculty and staff members. “They are learning everything there from proper manners to arts and sciences. It was remarkable to see what these children are able to learn at such a young age,” McDaniel said. “I was encouraged and excited to see that there is this kind of education being given in our public schools. It was just an amazing day.” The Principal for the Day program has become an annual event in Norfolk Public Schools. This one-day event gives business and community leader’s first-hand experience of today's educational setting, challenges and triumphs. It also forges relationships between school and community leaders, laying the basis for new partnerships that can support and strengthen school improvement efforts. “Both the school and the base can benefit from partnering together and I look forward to building on this partnership,” McDaniel said.
