FORREST SHERMAN, NORMANDY DEPLOYS, ROOSEVELT DELAYED Sailors say goodbye to their loved ones as USS Normandy prepares to depart Naval Station Norfolk, March 9. Normandy and USS Forrest Sherman are deploying as part of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group. The USS Theodore Roosevelt’s (CVN 71) departure from NAVSTA Norfolk was delayed due to marine growth in the ship’s sea water piping and will be joining the strike group when the piping is cleaned out.

Hampton Roads Naval Museum (HRNM) held a panel discussion featuring a diverse group of retired and active duty Navy women, March 4. In conjunction with Women’s History Month, the museum hosted the panel to commemorate women in the Navy for their service and contribution to the fleet. The discussion was moderated by retired Rear Adm. Ann Phillips. “These four remarkable women have had the courage to serve their country in time of war, under difficult circumstances and when such service for women was, to say the least, unusual,” said Phillips in her introductory statement to

women in the Navy were few and far between. Hathaway joined as part of the World War II era program Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) and went on to become the dispersing officer at Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale. “In the early days the WAVES were called a novelty,” said Hathaway. “But I’ve always been very grateful for the chance I had to serve.” Isabella Bryant, another WAVES member, was 20 years old when she joined in August 1943. After her boyfriend, who served in the Air Force, died,
she decided to enlist to help the war effort. One of her naval accomplishments was decoding message traffic in Hawaii as an SPQ2, or Specialist (Communications) Petty Officer 2nd Class. When Phillips asked Bryant what she would tell young women considering naval service today, Bryant emphasized some of the benefits that come with service. “I would say [a benefit is] an opportunity for an education,” said Bryant. “The greatest thing that you can have is an education.
NSA to host Hampton Roads area CPO birthday week NORFOLK
Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads is hosting the Hampton Roads Area 122nd Chief Petty Officers (CPO) birthday week celebration, March 26 through April 1. This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Past While Looking Forward to Our Future.” The celebration provides many opportunities and venues for chiefs’ messes afloat and associations ashore to display unity of purpose, showcase pride in their heritage, and cultivate camaraderie through community relations projects, athletic events and social gatherings. First class petty officers and junior officers are invited and encouraged to participate in designated events. All chief petty officers are encouraged to wear service khaki with combination cover during the celebration week as an instantly recognizable display of unity.
