The Sailors and Marines on the aircraft elevator of Nimitzclass aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) fell silent and stood at attention as the sun rose on a cloudy, damp morning, Jan. 23. They stood at attention as Legalman 1st Class Elsa Weller picked up a wooden box carrying the cremains of her grandfather, and marched toward the water. The box got heavier with every step. She set down the cremains, rendered a salute, then her shipmates committed Gunnery Sgt. William Risher to the sea. Weller’s story is unique because she will commit to the sea both of her grandfathers during TR’s current underway, a timehonored tradition reserved for active duty Armed Service members, reservists and their dependents. “My family and I have said good-bye in one way and to me this is the only way I can say good-bye, by giving them full military honors,” said Weller, assigned to Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 12 and a native of Santa Barbara, California.
Ship builders of all ages across the Hampton Roads area competed in the fourth annual Brick by Brick: LEGO Shipbuilding Contest at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum (HRNM) Feb. 7 in Norfolk. HRNM partnered with the Hampton Roads Naval Historical Foundation, the Naval Historical Foundation (NHF) and The Home Depot to give more than 2,000 builders a chance to create historic naval ships while learning the science behind shipbuilding. Many volunteers and participants who attended the shipbuilding event are current or former Sailors. Retired Damage Controlman 1st Class Charles Cash, who competed in Lego contests as a young Sailor, built a naval ship model with his 5thgrade son, Alexander. “Events like these bring out their creativity and give them a chance to socialize with other kids who love Legos as much as they do,” said Cash. HRNM expanded the shipbuilding contest this year into two separate competitions: one for those who made ships at the museum and one for those who built their ships at home. Ship models were judged based on three categories: creativity, aesthetic and originality. HRNM awarded prizes for five winning age categories ranging from ages 4 to 17 and up in each competition, along with a fan favorite voted for by attendees. “After doing this for the past three years, we felt it really wasn’t fair for somebody who had a month to work on their ship to compete with somebody who just had a few hours,” said HRNM Public Affairs Officer Susanne Greene.
