Virginia International Tattoo convention has a long standing history, not only in the Norfolk area, but worldwide. The event is hosted by Virginia Arts Festival – a nonprofit organization bringing artists from across the globe to the Hampton Roads area since 1997. The word Tattoo comes from the 17th and 18th century Dutch saying “Doe den tap toe!” which meant to “Turn off the taps!” This saying was said by Innkeepers, requiring that everyone retire to their barracks. Over the years, the meaning of the word has slightly changed and has come to hold a ceremonial meaning in military music. The festival pays special tribute to our military members. “My wife and two children have attended many Tattoos over the years while I’ve been assigned to various commands at Naval Station Norfolk,” Naval Station Norfolk Commanding Officer Capt. Doug Beaver said. “It is an annual family outing that has become a seminal event for not only local military families, but the entire Hampton Roads community, including our NATO allies stationed here in Virginia and visiting international partners.” Not only does the celebration bring music and art to local families, it serves as a learning opportunity. “The Tattoo celebrates our shared heritage, demonstrates the pride and professionalism of the members of our services, and just as important, we learn more about one another as an international community,” Beaver said. This year’s event will welcome over 1,000 performers from eight different countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, Jordan, The Netherlands, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the U.S. “The Tattoo is a very inspiring show with its patriotic themes, participation by the U.S. military branches and international military groups,” Virginia Arts Festival General Manager and Virginia International Tattoo Director and Producer J. Scott Jackson said. Music is a universal form of communication that brings different cultures, age groups and individuals from different walks of life into one room to appreciate its art. This year’s Virginia International Tattoo will take place on April 21-24, at the Scope Arena in Norfolk.

Exercise Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield 2016 (SC-CS16) will be conducted on naval installations within the Navy’s Mid-Atlantic Region, Feb. 1-12. This annual exercise is designed to enhance the training and readiness of Navy security forces. Exercise SC-CS16 is not in response to any specific threat, but is a regularly scheduled exercise. Measures have been taken to minimize disruptions within local communities and to normal base operations, but there may be times when the exercise causes increased traffic around bases or delays in base access. Area residents may also see or hear security activities associated with the exercise.
