For the Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), this mantra has been engrained in them from the time they first set foot on the yellow footprints at the recruit depot. For the Sailors of Tactical Air Control Squadron (TACRON) 21 Marine Augmentation Team (MAT), this is a new skill set. The MAT Sailors of TACRON 21 are primarily air traffic controllers and are used to communicating with aircraft, but now under the instruction of the

26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Battalion landing team (BLT), they are learning to communicate in a brand new way, through tactical fires. TACRON 21 MAT Sailors undergo extensive training that enables them to integrate with Marine units during amphibious operations. The Sailors are trained air traffic controllers who are trained in the art of expeditionary warfare. They have the ability to set up forward arming and refueling points, tactical landing zones, helicopter landing zones, control air drops and provide for their self-defense when forward deployed.

The Center for Security Forces (CENSECFOR) Detachment Chesapeake spotlighted its newest training asset designed to heighten the effectiveness and realism of its security force training, Jan. 21. The new training simu-
lator, a wooden open-roof structure, consists of eight rooms of various configurations and entryways that will allow for much more realistic advanced security force training. Since 2012, the detachment had used a basic wire fence to simulate the interior rooms of a building, and the major drawback was students could always see
around the corner. “We recognized the need to make our training scenarios more realistic,” CENSECFOR Detachtment Chesapeake Instructor Chief Gunner’s Mate David McNutt said. “The logical step forward was to improve our current training simulators.” Undertaken as a “self-help”
