The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Boise (SSN 764) returned to its homeport at Naval Station Norfolk from a deployment, Jan. 16. Boise, under the command of Cmdr. Scott C. Luers, is returning from the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility where the crew executed the Chief of Naval Operation’s Maritime Strategy in supporting national security interests and maritime security operations. Boise was awarded the 2014 Battle Ef-

ficiency ‘Battle E’ for Submarine Squadron 6 in an announcement made by Vice Adm. Michael J. Connor, commander, Submarine Forces Atlantic, on Jan. 5. “Boise steamed more than 37,000 miles conducting operations in challenging high contact density, shallow water environments spanning the U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th Fleets,” said Luers. “We completed three missions vital to national security, 14 strategic strait transits in support of time sensitive operations and key theater commander tasking. The ship provided operational commanders a unique indication of submerged and surfaced threats, giving additional support and

protection to high value units in theater operations.” Port visits were conducted in Duqm, Oman; Manama, Bahrain; Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates; Souda Bay, Greece; and Rota, Spain. “Boise Sailors excelled as ambassadors in representing the Navy as a Global Force for Good, conducting community relations events during multiple port visits,” said Luers. “As the first nuclear-powered warship to Duqm, Oman, we established a long-lasting relationship with the host Navy and government.

NORFOLK

Have a radical idea to solve a naval problem? The Chief of Naval Operations and the Navy Warfare Development Command invite junior officer and enlisted leaders to apply for the CNO’s Rapid Innovation Cell for 2015. Applications are being accepted until Jan. 31. Successful applicants will develop innovative technology or processes as part of the CNO’s Rapid Innovation Cell, or CRIC, established in 2012 to take advantage of opportunities outside the Navy mainstream, empowering innovators with flag leadership advocacy and financial resources to develop prototypes that can be rapidly transitioned to the fleet. Volunteers from a cross-section of Navy communities are sought to participate as a collateral duty without a geographic relocation or release from present duty assignment.

USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT, AT SEA

Capt. Daniel C. Grieco, commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), and Capt. Benjamin Hewlett, deputy commander of Carrier Air Wing 1 (DCAG), successfully recorded the 200,000th arrested landing aboard TR, Jan. 15. “It was an amazing opportunity to highlight an accomplishment of the USS Theodore Roosevelt ... making history during her 28th year in the fleet,” said Grieco. Logging the 200,000th trap was the result of decades of dedication and professionalism from the team aboard TR, ranging from

aviators to the Sailors operating the ship’s arresting gears. “It is amazing to be a part of the 200,000th trap because with the job that we do, it takes a lot of effort for five traps,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) 2nd Class Chad Gaston, arresting gear assistant leading petty officer, from Cordele, Georgia. “So, 200,000 is a lot for one ship, and I can’t even imagine how many Sailors and man hours it took to reach this milestone.” It’s not just the pilot landing the aircraft. Several different Sailors play a part in coordinating the landing of an aircraft aboard an aircraft carrier.

Navy EOD Tech awarded Bronze Star By MC2 Randy Savarese Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 2 Public Affairs

VIRGINIA BEACH

An explosive ordnance disposal technician assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 12 was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his actions during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in an award ceremony held on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Jan. 12. Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician 1st Class Scott Weaver was cited for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving as the TRIDENT 2211B Explosive Ordnance Disposal team leader, Special Operations Task ForceSoutheast in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom on April 9, 2012. During a combined reconnaissance patrol in the Arghandab River Valley he and his patrol came under enemy fire from multiple locations. After his squad commander was wounded in the leg by a bullet, Weaver, with total disregard for his own safety, ran to his position to help. He pulled his squad commander from the area and immediately began stabilizing medical treatment before transporting him to a safer location and then returned to his comrades to continue fighting. “Looking out at all of you here today, I know any one of you wearing the badge would have done the exact same thing if you were in my shoes,” said Weaver. Rear Adm. Frank A. Morneau, Commander, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, presented the medal to Weaver after recognizing him and his family for their dedication and service. “Petty Officer Weaver’s heroic actions and composure under enemy fire exemplifies the ethos of the Navy EOD community as a warrior, professional Sailor, and guardian of life,” said Morneau. “I was extremely honored to present him this decoration on behalf of our Republic for his bravery in the face of grave danger.” The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to an individual who, while serving in or with the military of the United States, distinguishes him or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States or while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force.
