halberstadt cl iv

The Halberstadt CL IV joined the war in the Spring of 1918, and served a vital role as a ground attack aircraft for the Germans. It was much more maneuverable than earlier models, and pilots could fly low formations of four to six planes. It flew over the Western Front to target Allied infantry and artillery fire for advancing Germans. This Halberstadt was purchased by the museum in 2006 from the former Frank Ryder Collection in Alabama. The markings on the fuselage side represent The Katzenjammer Kids, an American comic strip from the early Twentieth Century.
