There’s no shortage of things to do in May on Long Island. The beginning of the month is when many of us start preparing for the summer: cleaning the patio furniture, opening the pool, planting flowers and, if you’re lucky enough, taking the boat out of dry dock and into the water. After all that work, it’s time to play and there are numerous activities and events throughout the month. On Thursday, May 9th, Milieu is sponsoring National Mom’s Nite Out at Broadway Mall from 5-9 p.m. Bring your friends and be prepared to have a ball! Mini makeovers, massages, psychic readings, mini golf, giveaways, live entertainment and more, it’s our Mother’s Day present to you. On Sunday, May 12th, the official Mother’s Day is celebrated and our gift guide is filled with unique ideas that every mom will love. On Memorial Day weekend, tens of thousands of Long Islanders will flock to Jones Beach State Park for the 10th annual Bethpage Air Show. Don’t forget sunscreen. Many brave souls will battle the traffic and head east to either the Hamptons or Montauk. Milieu has a story about both. Elisa DiStefano is our Hampton’s connection and Alex Karcev’s insightful cover story, Meet Me in Montauk, is fun and informative. DJ Theo is another Hampton favorite and we have an in-depth profile of Theo as this month’s Guy Who Gets It on page 56. Bon appétit, our foray into food, is filled with unique BBQ ideas, plus we have an exclusive interview with celebrity chef Curtis Stone. Milieu was invited by Tanger Outlets at The Arches to spend some time with the Australian cuisinier and his take on Long Island can be found on page 62. For those who just want to hit the beach, don’t miss our exclusive in-depth story on the state of Long Island’s shoreline. Beach PatrolPost Sandy, written and photographed by Anna Dinger, is the first of a series that we will be reporting on this summer to keep you informed about our most precious natural resource. When the beaches officially open, we will bring you an updated Beach Patrol. Don’t miss it. Our WorkOut page, complete with listings of almost every outdoor exercise class offered on Long Island, is on page 66. Rounding out health is our feature story by Jaime Franchi on Hybrid Healthcare: Concierge Care on Long Island. There were so many images we wanted to share with you that they filled two Décor pages with the trendiest ideas and furniture for your backyard oasis. Our patriotic picnic styles, laser-focused shoes and bags and our Trendy 10 are all geared toward you. Next month, our June issue will bring you the latest styles from Long Island boutiques, who owns them and what their style is. Our Milestones special section will bring you the most beautiful and up-to-date styles and trends on weddings, and other important milestone events in your life. Magazines are like a puzzle, every segment has to fit together to complete the picture. Our readers get more than printed words. Reading Milieu Magazine is an experience. Enjoy,

Elisa DiStefano By Beverly Fortune

Over the past few years, millions of Long Islanders have tuned into News12 for their morning traffic and weather report. The weather might be sunny, but more often than not, rush hour traffic is a nightmare, but Elisa DiStefano has a way of softening the blow, making the report a little easier for us to bear. The entire staff at Milieu was thrilled to have Elisa as our cover and style model for this issue. Even though we’ve met a few times before, spending the day with her was not only a pleasure, it was a revelation. It was cold and windy the day of the shoot and Elisa never complained (well, maybe a little when our photographer, Jim Lennon, asked her to put her toes in the ocean at Southampton Beach). She’s definitely not a diva—she was game-on for the entire day. While we were bundled up in coats, Uggs and gloves, we let Elisa loose. To keep herself warm, she talked. All day. We learned some things about her we thought you might enjoy. Of course she was the class president at Hauppauge High School for four years and, as a senior, voted Miss Hauppauge. There was never a doubt that she would go on to Boston University and then land a coveted internship with thenNBC anchor Soledad O’Brien, who gave Elisa advice that motivates her every day. “Soledad told me, ‘Maybe you can’t outsmart everybody, but you can outwork anybody,’” says Elisa. “And that’s what I’ve always done— worked as hard as I can.” Although you’ll see Elisa on air, you’ll never see her reporting in the air. “Before News12, I worked for a NYC station from their chopper,” she says. “I literally threw up every day for a month. I couldn’t do my reports.” While most of us are sound asleep, Elisa beings her day at 2:30 a.m., and arrives at the News12 studios in Woodbury by 4 a.m. Between editing segments and appearances, she usually gets home after 10 p.m. Once the summer season kicks off Memorial Day weekend, she hops in her car and heads out east for the weekend after the morning show. Fri-

day night, Saturday and Saturday night’s agenda are filled with parties, places and people that she’ll feature on her weekly segment, “Hot in the Hamptons.” With her experience as a traffic reporter, traveling to the Hamptons isn’t all that bad. “I know all the shortcuts, so I can beat the traffic,” she laughs. Attending parties all weekend might sound glamorous, but to Elisa the events aren’t about meeting someone famous, it’s the impact these events can have on those less fortunate. And to her, that gives them meaning. “The special thing about Hamptons celebrity events is that they are mostly all for a charity, so big money raises big money,” she says. Of the hundreds of celebrities Elisa has met,

she was most impressed with Julie Andrews. “She’s a legend and in a league of her own,” she says. After the parties are over, Elisa doesn’t stay and socialize, she has to compose the segment, so on Sunday afternoons she travels back to her office to edit the video so it’s ready to air on Monday at 5 a.m. Her natural talent and comfort on camera—and in person—connects her with the public, who see Elisa as an advocate for many causes. She is happy to oblige whenever possible. “You have to be in the community and willing to help,” she says. In fact, Elisa uses whatever free time she has to promote local charities, events and other causes. Her community spirit hasn’t gone unnoticed. She was recently awarded 1st Place for Best Local TV Reporter by the readers of the Long Island Press and because of her Only wear wedges, otherwise your shoes many acts of kindness, on November will sink in the grass. 8, she will be honored by the American Cancer Society as their HumaniEat before you go (there might be passed tarian of the Year. hors d’oeuvres, but don’t count on it). “I believe in the power of the meBring an elastic to pull your hair back—it dia,” says Elisa. “And I want to be recgets hot standing in the sun with no shade. ognizable so I can continue to make a difference in the community.”

First came the fishermen.

Before the trendy restaurants, boutique hotels and professional mixologists, Montauk was long referred to as “a quaint drinking town, with a fishing problem.” The scruffy fishermen, blue-collar bars and local surfers are still there, but a stylish set of newcomers have transformed the place into a hot spot for the Hamptons set.

friendly faces Montauk has always tugged back and forth between a pristine paradise for the local populace and a hipster hot spot with the pendulum swinging back almost immediately after the season is complete. Grant Monahan has been witness to this shift for decades. His mom is the owner of the Ditch Witch, Montauk’s beloved food truck situated at Ditch Plains Beach for the past 19 years. “Montauk is where I was born and where I’ve been my whole life,” says Monahan. All the locals know each other and even with the influx of tourists, it remains a tight-knit community. “John’s been here longer than us,” adds Monahan, referring to the Beach Dog, a food truck that serves hot dogs at the western end of Ditch Plains. The summer months mean a 6-day workweek for Monahan who, at age 22, is now a partner in the family business. “Most people have the summer time off, but for people who

work in the service industry, it’s the opposite,” he says. “It’s nose-to-the-grind nose-to-the-grindstone.” A day off is filled with surfing for Monahan yet, surprisingly, a rainy day is a welcome and refreshing alternative to one filled with sunshine. “Rain mid-week is a gift,” he says. “I can look out at the beauty of the beach with a clear view of the surf. The locals come down too and hang under the canopy and talk to us.” Monahan is also a part of the next generation helping to create the future of the seaside town. This month, he will introduce his photography project, View from the Window, a tribute to the eclectic mix of customers and familiar faces of the folks who frequent his family’s food truck.

On May 25, the gallery will host an exhibit and book release party for View from the Window. The book will be sold both at the gallery opening and at the Ditch Witch. “People are drawn to Montauk for the beauty of the beaches and the sand,” says Monahan. “But it’s the sense of community that makes me proud and blessed to have grown up there.”

surf’s up!

An avid photographer, Monahan had the idea to shoot his perspective of summer from the window of the Ditch Witch. “I asked everyone if I could take their picture,” he says. “It made for some great portraits. One person hid their face with a coffee cup so you could only see eyes.” Monahan’s original intention was to publish a book of the photographs that he was going to fund himself. That is, until he learned about Kickstarter, the crowd-sourcing phenomenon used to raise seed money for creative endeavors. In January, Monahan launched his Kickstarter campaign, with the help of his sister, who helped write his story. In just a few days, he reached his $8,000 goal, and surpassed that number by the end of the campaign. “It blew up so fast,” he says. “It’s amazing how a customer who knew the Ditch Witch and the local Montauk community supported me. I am so grateful and really can’t thank them enough.” Scott Pitches, owner of Montauk’s Outeast Gallery, encouraged Monahan with almost daily visits to the Ditch Witch throughout the entire process of the project, sparking interest in a gallery showing.

Like Monahan, Allie Perini, another local, was backed by the community on Kickstarter and reached her goal of raising $15,000 that she needed to re-ignite her budding swimwear business, Perini Swimwear. Like a call to arms, Perini declared, “Help make the beaches more beautiful!” on her project page and the contributions came pouring in, the majority coming from the Montauk community. “People sent the nicest emails saying, ‘I know it’s not a lot, but I just want to see a Montauk girl succeed,’” says Perini. “It’s an amazing feeling that these people believed in me.” In turn, Montauk and the community are very important to her. Perini’s swimwear will be manufactured on Long Island and her designs are inspired by the girls who frequent the beaches and surf the waves, like herself. “There’s no point to me in just lying on the beach,” she says. “I love the ocean and going in and out of the water. I designed my swimwear with sturdy straps and durable elastic so that the girl who wears my bikini can play volleyball, go swimming and surf, and still look cute.”

Charming prints and simple construction make the bathing suit pieces very easy to mix and match and Perini is also planning a mini surfer-inspired collection since, “surfing is such a big part of Montauk.” After spending frequent summers in Montauk, Perini officially made the move to full-time resident 10 years ago. “I appreciate the laidback atmosphere in Montauk, I like the vibe,” she says. “It’s just a better way of life. Even off season, it’s quite beautiful in a whole different way.” Excited for the warmer weather months, Perini is getting herself bikini-ready by ordering her Blueprint Cleanse, stocking up on Ban de Soleil from White’s Pharmacy and taking outdoor hikes. “Oh, I also LOVE Barry’s Boot Camp,” she exclaims. “I do that to get ready for summer!” A favorite outdoor hangout of Perini’s is beachfront restaurant The Sloppy Tuna, where the official debut of Perini Swimwear is slated for Memorial Day weekend in a pop-up shop. Her collection will include her line of swimwear, beach towels and beach bags. “I want my brand to be associated with fun and with Montauk,” says Perini. “The Sloppy Tuna is the epitome of fun and a Perini Swimwear customer is one who will say, ‘I want to wear that bikini ‘cause I’m gonna have fun in that!”

it’s electric

Alexander Esposito, co-founder of Hamptons Free Ride and his partner, James Mirras, can also appreciate that sentiment. Those familiar with the Hamptons know that if you are not lucky enough to have a beach parking permit, a trip to the ocean can be tough going. Esposito and Mirras wanted to solve that problem.

“We are all about fun…and free,” says Esposito of the eco-friendly transportation service they started in 2011. Using electric cars, Hamptons Free Ride is sponsored by advertisers, so the beach shuttle service is free to the public. The ride can include sampling of various products, such as OPI nail polish and Vita Coco coconut water, making the whole experience fun. When the local team was looking to expand their service beyond East Hampton, Montauk was the next spot. “James is a true local,” Esposito explains. “And everyone loves Montauk. It’s a town with so much character, you’re drawn to it.” In East Hampton, the route is a defined loop from the village to the beach. “Montauk is more freestyle,” Esposito explains. “There’s more natural foot traffic, people walking around the village and more events. People can just flag us down.” Free Ride vehicles seem to fit right into the cool and carefree outdoor vibe of Montauk. The electric cars are naturally low speed, do not run at night and generally stick to short routes. “You can’t take the service from Amagansett to Montauk,” Esposito says. “But you can go to play mini golf from Atlantic Terrace.” Memorial Day marks the official opening of Hamptons Free Ride, so Esposito and Mirras are getting prepared for the busy season ahead. “We are cleaning, wrapping and rebranding our cars as we finalize the last couple of sponsors,” Esposito says. “To help people flag us down, we are also putting on new logoed top signs.”

This year, they are also adding a Southampton route to the mix. “Chris Diamond is a Southampton local and he started a similar concept called Spot Ride,” says Esposito. “We decided that we are all locals so why not do it together? So we partnered up our brand and relationships, with his knowledge of the area.” A newly redesigned website, TheFreeRide.com, featuring all routes the expanded fleet of 17 cars will travel is next. The team of drivers will also act as the eyes and ears of the area, using Twitter to

“Media has played a big role in terms of the explosion of Montauk’s popularity in the last couple of years,” says Leyla Marchetto, a partner with Navy Beach. “Lately, it’s about the anti-fedora thing…how the hipsters are trying to encroach on the fisherman.” Upon hearing that Glee producer Ryan Murphy may have plans to create a TV show about Montauk, she responds, “I wouldn’t want a Jersey Shore version of Montauk. But a family friendly storyline with really good characters like surfer dudes, old fisherman and cool restaurateurs…that would be interesting.” The story of how Marchetto and her husband, Franklin Ferguson, settled in Montauk could be fodder for a TV show. They were thinking of opening an eatery in NYC, until they were seduced by the ‘small drinking town with a fishing problem’. “Visiting friends in Montauk, we were checking out the Surf Lodge and Sole East, and it was awesome,” she explains. “We heard the place by Fort Pond Bay was looking for a new tenant. We saw the sunset there and fell in love.” Giving up their city plans, and with partners Frank and Kristina Davis and Martin Cabrera, they took over the business and opened the following April. “We are part of the new generation making a choice to live there,” Marchetto says. “Once you buy a house and see people year round, it makes you more authentic.” Most are lured to Navy Beach by the beautiful sunsets that can be viewed most evenings. Last summer, the restaurant hosted a sunset photo contest, with the winner

“Everyone loves Montauk. It’s a town with so much character, you’re drawn to it.” report on the goings-on in town, celebrity sightings and free things to do. “Free Ride is all about the free nature of the business,” says Esposito, adding that a repeat of last year’s gratis beer summer party is being planned with sponsor Heineken for mid-June at The Sloppy Tuna restaurant. “Montauk is great,” he says. “I love that the beach is right next to the village and it’s the only ‘Hamptons’ that has hotels in the area along the coast. It seems to get busier and busier, yet it still has kept its niche as the ‘un-Hampton’.”

featured on this year’s Navy Beach postcard and on NavyBeach.com. Marchetto’s mission is to update the website so that it will be fully integrated with social media feeds. “The first thing I do in the morning is post onto Facebook any updates to the schedule and upload a ton of pictures on Instagram,” she says, adding that last minute happenings are announced via twitter, since the weather can be erratic. “It can be cloudy and foggy on the ocean and it’s sunny on the bay side at Navy Beach. But trust me, if there is a great sunset, we will tweet it out.” Expect more locally sourced ingredients on the menu this year, such as fish and produce harvested from surrounding farms. There won’t be much change in the staff, however, thanks to the loyalty of the team. “It’s like summer camp,” Marchetto says. “We see each other really intensely for three months and then don’t see each other for the whole winter.” Part of the allure of Navy Beach is that it is boater friendly. Drop anchor into the bay, make your way to shore and enjoy outdoor dining at tables set in the sand. Last year, they hosted a Riviera party with a retro 1950s vibe that will be repeated this July. “It was amazing,” says Marchetto. “The Heron turquoise catamaran was there, along with lots of boats, and it felt like you escaped to the French Riviera. I really look forward to the catamaran coming back— they are the nicest people and such a beautiful boat.”

And Heron Yacht Charters is on the pilgrimage north from the British Virgin Islands for another Long Island summer.

ship to shore

An offshore fisherman for many years, Captain Cameron McLellan met his wife Shannon on a trip to the Virgin Islands, where they established their business. Inspired by the spirited Caribbean way of life, they decided to bring their luxury catamaran to Montauk three years ago. “It is so common down there to anchor your boat and go to a restaurant on the beach,” Shannon explains. Hence the partnership created with Navy Beach. Besides using the boat’s life rings as décor in the restaurant, and taking part in the Riviera event, they’ve teamed up to offer an exclusive charter sail from the Montauk Yacht Club ending with dinner at Navy Beach. “The catamaran has a shallow draft so we can go right up to the beach,” she says. “Some of our guests like to swim in, so we’ll meet them on shore with a beautiful basket of fluffy towels and their sundresses.” Leaving nothing to chance, Main Street Drivers are in cohoots with Heron Yacht, and will bring cars to Navy Beach should guests choose to end their charter there. With amenities like chilled champagne, plush towels and white roses, Heron Yacht is geared more for the ladies versus the male-

dominated sport fishing boats so often seen out east. You can charter an adventure for a day, sail around the Montauk Lighthouse, to Block Island, or for an extended weekend to Martha’s Vineyard. And rain is no deterrent. “We have a good weather system and plan by the hour,” says Shannon. “But the interior is so big, it’s fun anyway.” Sometime this year, Heron Yacht plans to expand their partnerships to bring more value-added services into the mix. The indefatigable Shannon is in talks with newcomer Hampton Organic Beauty Bus, to create special spa packages. “We want to offer facials, massages, waxing…even spray tan parties!” she says. Local chefs are being tapped to create special menus for private events. And of course, a Heron Yacht bridal party can always arrange to set sail for a “mermaid menu” at Navy Beach. On Memorial Day weekend, the summer season officially rolls into Montauk. Perini Swimwear will debut with a fashion show at The Sloppy Tuna. View from the Window will exhibit at the Outeast Gallery. Navy Beach will start a full schedule. Free Ride cars will run their routes and the Heron Yacht will certainly be booked to capacity. Rain or shine, the calendar of things to do in Montauk will be full until Labor Day, when swarms of tourists return west and live happily ever after—until next year. The End.

Everything Is Just Beach-y!

Post-Sandy

By Anna Dinger It has been more than six months since Superstorm Sandy barreled through Long Island, leaving devastation in its wake. And, while many people have been able to return to life as usual, there is still a great deal of cleaning up to do and our beaches are no exception. “Sandy caused a lot of destruction but our crews and contractors are fiercely working to get us in great shape to kick off the summer,” says New York State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey. Damage from the storm included flooding, erosion, electrical damage, extensive tree damage, destruction of dunes and the collapse and destruction of both roadways and infrastructure. Right now, work is being done non-stop to prepare the beaches for Memorial Day weekend and the busy season ahead. “All Long Island state parks will be open fully or partially by Memorial Day weekend,” says George Gorman, deputy regional director of New York State Parks. So, we took a tour of Long Island’s beaches before the summer season and here’s what Milieu’s Beach Patrol learned...

Long Beach The Long Beach area was one of the most drastically affected areas on the island. The main boardwalk was destroyed and a great deal of sand was lost during the storm. “From a city infrastructure perspective, we have to make sure all repairs are taken care of—our water and sewage plants, our beach and boardwalk, our recreation center, our senior citizen center and all of the city facilities that were damaged in the storm,” says Gordon Tepper, director of communications in Long Beach. The Army Corps of Engineers Storm Reduction Project was recently approved by the city council and will provide an engineered and nourished beach, increased sand elevation, an elevated protective dune, a retaining wall and the rehabilitation of 16 jetties. It will be 100-percent federally funded at a cost of about $150 million. “The beaches now have man-made dunelike mounds to prevent the ocean from creeping up onto our streets,” says Long Beach resident Johanna Sofield, who is also president of Long Beach Christmas Angel, a non-profit organization that provides

40 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

financial assistance to Long Beach families that are experiencing difficulties, especially those impacted by Sandy. Long Beach will also be replacing the boardwalk that was destroyed, a massive project. But the damage extends way beyond the boardwalk. “Countless homes in the West End remain unoccupied,” says Sofield. “I would guess a 50-percent occupancy rate would be accurate. You can see people moving back every day, and construction crews

Nickerson Beach

milieuli.com

can be seen on almost every block making repairs to homes.” Businesses have taken a major hit as well. “Many businesses remain closed,” Sofield continues. “Some have closed their doors permanently and are now vacant including Grillfire, Savage Chic, Pita Grill, Park Avenue Café and Pinup.” Although there are many different projects that are already underway or soon to be, there is still a lot of work to be done. A fleet of construction trucks dotted the sand at Nickerson Beach preparing for the summer season, scooping up and flattening out new sand along the beach. “The bay remains littered with storm debris, but waterway patrols are making progress by removing unsafe objects,” says Sofield. “The joy of spring and summer will fix what [FEMA] will not.” “The most important thing is having our residents back in their homes and our businesses re-opened,” Tepper says, adding that despite all the work being done, there will still be a regular summer beach season in Long Beach.

m ay 2 0 1 3

Post-Sandy

Jones beach Jones Beach is undergoing a great deal of rebuilding, especially to the boardwalk for Memorial Day weekend, when the annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach State Park, which draws hundreds of thousands of spectators, is underway. “Eighty percent of the substructure of the tiling and the cross-beams have been repaired and leveled,” Gorman says of the boardwalk. “Our priority has been the boardwalk, the electrical system and the sanitation system,” says Gorman. “For Memorial Day weekend we’ll have the boardwalk back in place, operational, functional, but we will not have all the railing back in place. There will be some temporary railing or blocking that is put up.”

Cupsogue

There is a great deal of construction and repair work that is ongoing on Dune Road leading to Cupsogue Beach. At the beach itself, a lot of sand

remains washed up over the stairs and the ramp leading down to the water. The dunes seemed to have undergone a lot of damage as well.

Robert Moses & Ocean Parkway

Robert Moses beaches remain closed as the roadways continue to be repaired, at a cost estimated by Gov. Cuomo to be about $32.2 million, but will be open on Memorial Day weekend, according to Gorman, who added, “Ocean Parkway and the Robert Moses traffic circle are under repair.” “We are pumping sand from the Captree State boat channel and from a stock pile area on the west end of Robert Moses onto the beach at Fields 4 and 5, which were the most severely eroded beaches.”

Post-Sandy

fire island

Another important summer beach location that was hit pretty hard by Sandy was Fire Island. Being only about 520 ft. to 1,300 ft. wide at any given location, the barrier island is very vulnerable when big storms hit. “There was a lot of damage to the Fire Island community,” says Paula Valentine, public affairs specialist at Fire Island National Seashore. A lot of debris washed up on the island but was removed by the Army Corps of Engineers. Water washed away a number of houses and damaged even more decks. In Davis Park alone, seven houses were washed away. Many houses were flooded, especially in the towns of Davis Park and Ocean Ridge, and sand dunes were destroyed all over the island. “The biggest amount of work right now involves repair to the marinas and the boardwalks that provide access down to the beach at Watch Hill and Sailor’s Haven and to the lighthouse,” Valentine says. “When [Robert Moses’] Field 5 opens, then the Fire Island Lighthouse will be able to be re-opened, but people are going to have to walk down the beach to get there until the boardwalks are replaced.” The most notable change as a result of the storm was the opening of a breach at the Old Inlet, where water is being freely exchanged between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great South Bay. Breaches are part of a barrier island’s natural process and can even provide some ecological benefits. As this breach is in a wilderness area, it’s being monitored to see if it will close naturally. Current data suggests that the breach is fairly stable and will likely close by itself. “It has some very positive impacts,” Valentine says. “It also can disrupt things, like access—one of the things that was impacted this year was our Sportsman’s driving program and our fishing in the fall was cut short because of the storm and the breach.” The only major concern now is the possibility that the breach could worsen flooding in neighboring communities on the south shore. Consequently, frequent monitoring of the breach began less than 48 hours after Sandy and is now monitored at least once a week. The Fire Island’s Wilderness Center was reopened along with pedestrian access to the beach between the visitor center and the breach at Old Inlet, and visitors can hike the 1.5 miles between the wilderness center and Old Inlet and includes some portions of the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness. Public access to the breach itself is prohibited by boat or by foot. Strong currents and monitoring equipment in the inlet can be hazardous for both pedestrians and boaters. The William Floyd Estate, in Mastic Beach, was reopened soon after Sandy. All other Fire Island National Seashore facilities remain closed, however, as damage assessments, stabilization and debris removal and cleanup are ongoing. Fire Island has also seen some seasonal camping closures as a result of the storm. “Right now the campground at Watch Hill will probably open on schedule in early May—camping is not expected to be effected,” Valentine says. “But, our Wilderness Camping at Fire Island National Seashore will be affected by the impact from the storm. Because of the breach at Old Inlet, access to Wilderness Backcountry Camping is not possible from the Wilderness Visitor Center and from the Smith Point entrance.” “Things that you can do right now and enjoy would be hiking down to see the breach at Old Inlet and see natural processes in action and how dynamic a barrier island can be,” Valentine said.

Water Quality

Most of the debris from the storm that was blown into the water at all of the various beaches has since washed up on shore and been cleared away. The quality of the water after the storm has not yet been monitored. It will be monitored before the beaches are open for swimming. “When the beachfront will be reopened we do test it and make sure it’s within acceptable standards, otherwise we can’t re-open it,” Gorman said. “So, we will do those tests and we don’t anticipate any problems with water quality.” In addition, lifeguards will be inspecting the water to make sure that there aren’t any hazards before the beaches are opened to the public for swimming.

Other NY State Parks

New York State Parks listed below are expected to be open by Memorial Day weekend, with some ongoing repairs. Most of them will be seeing fence and tree damage repairs and debris removal. The Bayard Cutting Arboretum, Belmont Lake Park, Bethpage State Park, Brentwood State Park, Caleb Smith Preserve, Caumsett Historic Park Preserve, Connetquot River Preserve, Hempstead Lake, Nissequogue River, Wildwood State Park, Valley Stream State Park and Planting Fields Historic Park.

Post-Sandy

Smith Point

County Park Smith Point County Park is undergoing repairs as well. Although the main boardwalk area near the Beach Hut remains, the boardwalk down to the water is almost completely gone. Much of the dunes have also been destroyed leaving behind bald hills of sand. According to Emily Lauri, director of community relations for Suffolk County Parks, the bathing beach will be open by Memorial Day, but the outer beach will remain closed while it’s undergoing repairs. The outer beach suffered a breach that has been mechanically closed but a number of wash-overs have still occurred. Access roads to the outer beach are currently unusable and the beach is not safe for public use. Construction workers will continue to replace concrete and the boardwalk is expected to be fixed and usable by Memorial Day.

SOUTH SHORE

Montauk Point “In Montauk area parks, there was erosion, there was damage, but nothing as significant as the other beaches,” Gorman said. All of the facilities and beaches at Montauk Point are now open.

NORTH SHORE

Gilgo Beach is expected to be open by Memorial Day weekend. Gilgo suffered a severe loss of dune and other natural vegetation, which is currently being replaced with about 1 million native American Beach Grass plants.

Peconic Dunes Peconic Dunes Some parks were nearly unscathed by the Sandy including Peconic Dunes, which remained beautiful with little upkeep required after the storm. There was some tree damage and flooding, but the park was able to maintain its natural woodsy look. sunken meadow The breach of the dike located at Field 3, substantial tree damage, downed fences and a bit of erosion along the bluffs were reported. A bridge and shoreline stabilization plan has been designed and requires a permit before being put into action. The park is expected to be open by Memorial Day, with the exception of the eastern area that was breached.

m ay 2 0 1 3

east hampton Beach The only noticeable impact is that some sand has made its way up into the parking lot area. Captree State Park The Overlook Pier was still undergoing repairs from Hurricane Irene when Sandy came along, so repairs remain ongoing. By Memorial Day weekend it is expected that the Overlook Pier will be completed but some repairs will still be ongoing. Heckscher State Park Storm-related damages required electrical repairs at Overlook Beach and replenishing sand throughout the park. West Beach, Field 7 in particular, saw significant erosion and the bike path and parking lot were damaged. The bike path will be relocated while repairs continue. Water sports will be accommodated at the swimming beaches until the beginning of swimming season.

Lynn Scarpati

Extraordinary Women... Extraordinary Networking Lynn Scarpati looked drained. She had just given a seminar to students at SUNY Old Westbury on the dangers of drinking and driving. “You have to catch them early,” Lynn says, “and get them heading in the right direction.” After she presented her program, the moderator told her, “You got to them.” For Lynn, it’s a subject that really hits home. I knew that Lynn had a son, Chris, because our paths have crossed several times at events and meetings. I also knew that Lynn had another son, Matt, who was killed by a drunk driver while he was riding his bicycle. She told me she had another son, Adam, the oldest, who is a CPA and father to two little boys with big Italian names, Santino and Luciano. What she told me next was heartbreaking. Lynn and her husband Jim had another son, Mike. Chris and Mike were best friends, Lynn recalls. “It was May 2001, the day after Mother’s Day,” she says. “Mike was 20 years old. Chris, 17 at the time, came home and found Mike dead in his bedroom. Chris stayed with his brother, waiting for the emergency responders.” More than four months after Mike died, the Scarpati’s finally received the coroner’s report. The autopsy results concluded that he died from ARVD/C (arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy), a genetic condition affecting the heart muscle that can cause abnormal heart rhythms. The family hadn’t been aware of the condition but they were all tested and given a clean bill of health. The emotional toll of Mike’s death, however, was harder to resolve. “It leaves you in limbo,” Lynn says. “I focused on the children—that I had to make sure it didn’t happen to them.” She had asked Matt if he wanted to see a grief counselor but he told her he didn’t want to see somebody who’s going to tell him “it will get better with time,” she recalls. Not finding fault with his 10year old logic, Lynn didn’t make him go. When 9-11 occurred, things changed again for her family. Rather than go away to college, Chris decided to stay closer to home. The proximity gave the brothers a chance to heal together. “And then,” Lynn stops talking to collect herself, “there’s Matt…” “He was a good kid,” she says. “Matt was 19 years old for only three weeks.” After finishing his first year at the University of Buffalo, he was working as a summer relief door-

Theo Pisani

DJ, Artist, Entrepreneur & Philanthropist

Guys Who Get It DJ Theo is known for partying hard. The DJ and producer is one of dance music’s most influential tastemakers in the New York City and Long Island club scene and has amassed a loyal following over the past decade. He is well-known for his affiliation with Nervous Records, his Nervous Nitelife: Summer Clubbing mixes and his all-day beach party at Neptune Beach Club in the Hamptons. Nationally, Theo has been nominated for six consecutive years by DJ Times Magazine as one of America’s Best DJs and consistently ranks in the top 10. But what many people don’t know is that Pisani, of Commack, is a respected artist and businessman who, with his production partner Gabe Ramos, founded Dinotech Records, a unique record label company that puts an emphasis on marketing and promoting new releases and offers a family-like community for their artists that is not found at other labels. Instead of basking in his success, Theo realized he could use his popularity to help others, and began incorporating charitable causes into his events. “I’ve been out in front of so many people,” says Theo. “And I’ve realized more and more over the past five years that it would be nice to pull stuff together and throw these parties.” His annual holiday party, Theo’s Christmas Spectacular, collects toys from everyone at the event, even the club employees participate, and Theo donates them to Toys for Tots. “It’s tough to get people from the outside to always bring stuff in, especially at a nightclub,” he explains. “But we’ve ended up with a well-oiled machine. Every year we get more donations. People really want to help.” The party is a labor of love for both Theo and co-organizer Harlan Friedman, and has flourished since its inception. “I honestly wish I could do more of them,” he says. “But at least I get to put on this big one every year.” Theo is also head chair of the Celebrity/ Entertainer Committee for the Long Island Hospitality Ball, one of the largest annual fundraising events on the island, founded by Keith Hart, a leader in the hospitality industry and cancer survivor. The ball was created to raise money for the American Cancer Society and hundreds of owners and employees of

local restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and catering halls gather at the event to raise money, network and showcase their talents. Theo uses his nightlife contacts to find renowned artists and singers to perform at the event, which in turn brings in corporate sponsorship dollars. “When Keith said it was benefiting the American Cancer Society, it hit a note because I have family members that have died from cancer or have been sick,” Theo says. “I was full throttle on helping get this together, and I think we’re ready to take it to the next level and make a serious impact.” In 2012, the event raised $250,000 and Theo hopes to make even more at this year’s event, which will be held on June 3 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Since Theo is in the music industry, it’s only natural that he would play a role in promoting the arts. He recently became involved with ArtSpace Patchogue Lofts, an affordable apartment building where artists live and display their work throughout the hallways. He recently hosted a free performance and audience participation event called Of Colors Artists Lecture Series: A Symposium on Vinyl + Turntables, to educate aspiring deejays about the importance of vinyl records in music. “Patchogue is going through a Renaissance right now, and I think we would all love to see more towns and villages doing that,” he says. “Maybe more people will see these types of events and want to do it in their own towns. I think it’s good for art and music.” Theo, who gained a large fan base from DJ’ing in the Hamptons, is creating a new fundraising group to help repair and protect the beaches that were damaged on Fire Island by Sandy. “It seems like if you’re in front of people, it’s great to get paid and everything, but if you can’t use your resources to help out, it’s kind of like a sin in a way,” he says. “It’s a crazy schedule, I will say that. I wear sunglasses all the time because I’ve got bags under my eyes.” In spite of his many commitments to his family, his business and charity appearances, Theo feels that it’s his duty to give back to those in need. “Every day evolves, and these projects come up and they’re important,” he says. “You have to get them done.” —Lindsay Christ If you know a Guy Who “Gets It” and would like to nominate him for a future profile, email Beverly@MilieuLI.com

bon appétit

Barbecue, Barbeque, Bar-B-Q, BBQ— No matter how you spell it, you can almost smell it. Memorial Day weekend is traditionally the official opening of BBQ Season, and since this is the debut of Bon Appétit, we are dedicating this section to, what else, the BBQ!

TIP If you’re only going to change one thing about your BBQ habits, make sure you always bring your meat back to room temperature before cooking. Why? To get the heat from the outside of your steak into the middle without burning the surface to a crisp. The warmer things are in the middle before it goes onto the grill, the easier it is to win this battle.

Chef Curtis Stone on Simple Dinners, His New Book & Long Island

Celebrity chef Curtis Stone cooks and wows the crowd at Tanger Outlets at the Arches in Deer Park at his book signing event in April.

By Kristen Fortsch Celebrity chef Curtis Stone has traveled around the world learning about different cultures and cuisines. During TLC’s Take Home Chef, he visited the homes of 140 different people to learn what the everyday person’s challenges are when it comes to cooking at home. These experiences inspired his latest book, What’s for Dinner: Delicious Recipes for a Busy Life.

Curtis Stone’s Warm Shrimp Salad with Fennel Ingredients: 6 blood oranges 1/2 head butter lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces 1/2 head oak lettuce or red leaf lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces 1 small fennel bulb, trimmed and very thinly sliced 2 teaspoons olive oil 20 jumbo shrimp, peeled but with tails intact 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter 2 teaspoons drained extra-fine capers 2 sprigs fresh tarragon, leaves removed and finely chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper Instructions: Remove the peel and white pith from the oranges. Working over a large bowl to catch the juices and using a small sharp knife, cut the oranges between the membranes to release the segments into the bowl. Transfer the segments to another large bowl. Squeeze enough juice from the segmented oranges back into the bowl of accumulated juices to equal 1/4 cup total. Set the juice aside. Add the lettuce leaves and fennel slices to the orange segments and toss gently to combine. Divide the salad among 4 serving plates. Heat the oil in a large heavy sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and cook for 2 minutes, or until the shrimp start to turn pink. Add the butter and cook for 2 minutes, or until the butter browns and the shrimp are just cooked through. Arrange the shrimp atop the salads. Stir the capers, tarragon, and reserved 1/4 cup of orange juice into the browned butter and season the sauce to taste with salt and pepper. Pour the sauce over the salads and serve.

Serves: 4

At his recent book signing attended by crowds of fans at Tanger Outlets at The Arches in Deer Park, Milieu got a chance to sit down with the chef and ask him about his latest book. Targeted toward those who are constantly on the go, What’s for Dinner compiles a list of recipes that are dedicated to what day of the week it is. “A chef saying, ‘I want to write this beautiful recipe and really inspire people and educate them,’ that’s great if you are doing an entertainment book,” says Stone, who speaks with passion about teaching others how to cook. “If you are realistic, however, people have such busy lives. It’s a struggle to get dinner on the table. It’s time, it’s money, you have to clean up, it’s complicated.” So, in his book, Stone kept things simple. Each chapter has a label—Motivating Mondays, Thrifty Tuesdays, One Part Wednesdays, etc. Stone says he wants to help the average person to spice up their meals and make them realize they, too, can cook delicious meals in just 30 minutes. Stone’s famous cooking slogan is

milieuli.com

“to go with Mother Nature,” and he has his own garden at home to back up that belief—with a pesky squirrel he just can’t get rid of! Strawberries and asparagus are Stone’s recommendations for summer fruits and vegetables to cook with and he believes tasty dishes should “have a balance between acidity and fat.” “For example, butter and avocado work beautifully together,” he says. And while Stone originally hails from Australia the chef says he enjoys spending time on Long Island. “You guys have your own culture here,” he says. “It’s New York, but a million miles away from New York at the same time. You know what you like. I love it here. It’s so unique!” Which of his recipes would Stone recommend for Long Islanders? “You guys are the king of the clam bake right?” he says. “I do a lot of cooking with seafood. My two top seafood recommendations are shrimp salad and spaghettini with clam sauce.”

Kris is a strikingly handsome, 3 year old pup, who would make someone a very happy owner if just given the chance. He’s been with us nearly a year with visitors showing little to no interest in this mighty fine fellow. Upon first meeting Kris, you’ll find his interests lie more in sniffing and investigating his surroundings than meeting impatient, potential adopters. Once satisfied, he’ll turn his attention to toys, fetching them and tossing them but never tearing them up. He is interactive and playful, mouthy when excited, but easily corrected. The real secret to Kris’ undivided attention, is right in your hands. He sits unabashedly with his head in your lap while you scratch his ears, face, neck and tush. He turns to putty, completely relaxed, totally content, almost in a trance, all the while crooning and moaning during his massage. A total marshmallow. Kris knows his sit command and has just loads of potential to master more. Add some minor some leash work and he’ll be all set. He seems to like his fellow canines but is not so fond of the feline contingent. Children over age 10 would be fine. Come down and ask to meet Kris. You may just find him to be the love of your life that you didn’t know you were missing!

While it affects 55 percent of Americans over the age of 50, it disproportionately affects women. Of those who have osteoporosis in this country, 80 percent are women. About half of all women over the age of 50 will suffer a broken bone due to the disease. Osteoporosis is diagnosed using a DXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) bone density scan. This quick and painless scan uses two kinds of low-energy X-rays that produce images showing bone mineral density, or how solid the bones are. From this scan, doctors are able estimate how likely it is that a patient will suffer a bone fracture. Based on the scan, physicians come up with a score which indicates whether a patient has osteoporosis, osteopenia (a milder precursor to osteoporosis), or normal bone density. Lateral Vertebral Assessment (LVA) is sometimes performed as part of the DXA scan. LVA can identify spine fractures and is appropriate for patients with unexplained back pain, borderline DXA results, or older patients who have lost over an inch of height. To help protect against osteoporosis, women should do weight-bearing exercises (walking, dancing, running) regularly, and eat a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can increase bone loss, so don’t smoke, and stick to no more than one drink per day for good bone health.

Hybrid Healthcare

Concierge Medicine on Long Island By Jaime Franchi When the Affordable Care Act becomes law in 2014, it will require that everyone be covered by healthcare, enabling a staggering 30+ million Americans, who were previously uninsured, to receive coverage through an expansion of the Medicaid program. All of these new patients will have access to healthcare, but it’s still unclear how primary care physicians

are going to handle this influx of patients, and if they want to. Once thought of as a luxury for the rich, and the subject of Long Island-based TV series Royal Pains, patients in a concierge medical practice pay an annual fee or retainer to receive enhanced services from their primary care physician. Dr. David Edelson of HealthBridge in Great

Neck was frustrated by the seemingly endless red tape of running a medical practice. It was affecting how he could treat his patients and making his administrative costs skyrocket. Many physicians faced with the same dilemma have either closed their practices or sold them to a hospital. Edelson opted to offer his patients concierge medicine, which would allow him to treat his patients with the care and attention he wouldn’t be able to give them otherwise.. “Without your health, nothing else you do in life is going to matter very much,” says Edelson. “Short of your family and closest friends, your primary care physician is probably going to be one of your most important long-term relationships in your life.” Some policy makers believe the trend of concierge medicine could lead to better healthcare through improved prevention. But others worry the growth of this practice will mean two tiers of coverage: the affluent receiving highquality care and the rest being seen by fewer doctors. But concierge services are now offered on Long Island with some affordable options. HealthBridge concierge service is a comprehensive primary care program for patients who pay an annual fee of $1,800 for upgraded

services and cover what their insurance companies will not. The fee includes 24/7 cell phone access to a primary care physician, full membership in their state-ofthe-art fitness center with certified trainers, yoga studio, a full-time nutritionist, a private VIP-waiting area and electronic access to medical records. In addition, when most patients might be allocated 15 minutes per appointment with the doctor, a concierge-care patient may spend upwards of a half hour to an hour. The service also includes the resources to deal with the insurance companies for authorizations and coverage. Technology plays a big role in this type of practice as well. “There’s an iPhone app that lets you remotely transmit an EKG,” says Edelson, who also uses Skype to check in with patients who are traveling and not able to get to the office. Edelson acknowledges that this type of service might exacerbate the already widening financial disparity on Long Island, and as such, has donated 20 percent of his services to “scholarship” patients who are either uninsured or have unmanageable health issues. “That’s the way it used to be, if you think back 20 or 30 years ago. Doctors would take on patients who couldn’t afford healthcare,” he says. “There were enough extra resources so that you could give back. That’s one of the ways we want to give back as part of our obligations as physicians.” Wayne Lipton, managing partner and founder of Rockville Centre-based Concierge Choice agrees. “It all comes down to time,” says Lipton. “The traditional healthcare model packs in so many patients that there is little time to build that one-on-one relationship between a patient and a physician. Yet the full-scale concierge system leaves too many out.” This is why Lipton pioneered the “hybrid” concierge system, which allows doctors to spend a portion of their days seeing to their concierge patients, while 74 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

retaining their original clients who might not be able to afford the upgrade to concierge services. “That’s where the ‘choice’ part comes in, for the doctor and for the patient,” Lipton says. Lipton says this model is “less socially cruel,” while it still addresses the need for “unhurried care” for patients who are willing and able to pay for it. Part of that care includes a more comprehensive physical examination that goes beyond what insurance companies traditionally reimburse for. The concierge exam might address nutrition, exercise, stress management, emotional and mental health and lifestyle choices. The more complete picture of a patient’s health allows the doctors who choose a model ike HealthBridge to provide more preventative care, rather than the reactionary care that a patient might receive in an emergency room or clinic setting. According to Lipton, the hybrid model can be implemented on a larger scale, while seeing to the individual needs of patients across the financial spectrum, without depleting the pool of doctors from the public. Concierge Choice, which offers support services to help physicians implement a concierge program in their practice, has expanded to 19 states. There will be a greater demand for primary care physicians when the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented. Only time will tell if primary care physicians will be overloaded by the surge of new patients. If that’s the case, many of us may have to decide if we want to pay for concierge care. m ay 2 0 1 3

Book Review

Hits Home with LI’s Business Women By Jamie Franchi There’s been plenty of ink spilled on Sheryl Sandberg’s new book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, from controversy surrounding class distinctions that some feel are exacerbated through this treatise, to support from some unlikely sources—including Anna Marie Slaughter, whose Atlantic article “Why Some Women Can’t Have it All,” seemed to pit her squarely against Sandberg who is purporting that indeed, some women can. The book is aimed at righting some of the wrongs in the form of women’s inequality in top positions in the business world. By writing the rules and observations that helped propel Sandberg into the COO position at Facebook, she’s extending a hand to those below her, so other women can join her at the top. Lisa Valentine, vice president of digital marketing firm Tenthwave—with seven offices across the country including the one where she works in Melville—knows what it’s like to be a woman who aspires to business greatness in the tech industry, like Sandberg. Valentine, a mother of two, works in ac-

for their accomplishments as opposed to women in business, and how difficult it is for women to successfully negotiate terms. “Acting in stereotypically feminine ways makes it difficult to reach for the same opportunities as men, but defying expectations and reaching for those opportunities leads to being judged as undeserving and selfish,” Sandberg writes. “Nothing has changed since high school; intelligence and success are not clear paths to popularity at any age. This complicated everything, because at the same time that women need to sit down at the table and own their success, doing so causes them to be liked less.” Yet, Lisa has rarely faced backlash for her successes. “I easily take credit for the work I have done, but my Achilles Heel is definitely in negotiating,” says Valentine. “While I do believe that you don’t get what you don‘t ask for, the con-

nated by social media presence and pinpointing the ‘next hottest thing’ out there, I like to believe I am on top of all of it.” Sandberg is most wily when she talks about family planning. She urges women to “Lean In” before they have children—to establish themselves strongly in their career, so that when they re-enter the workplace, they are not starting from scratch. Probably the most important advice Sandberg offers is for women to advocate for themselves. She calls this, “Taking a Seat at the Table”—not allowing yourself to be talked over or dismissed—and explains the psychological value of sharing the same physical space as a male colleague to establish equal billing. “I have always taken a seat at the table, and maybe it’s due to the fact that I grew up strong in a male-dominated household,” Lisa says. “The good ol’ boys club doesn’t necessarily make me feel excluded, although I’m thankful I don’t work in the banking and investment industry! The marketing field tends to be more liberal and laid back. I recall always making my voice heard in the conference rooms even in my first job right out of college.” Valentine owes much of her success to how she self-identifies—not as a female in the male world of business, but as a competent person: qualified, unafraid, and equal. These are also the qualities also valued by Sandberg, and those that will help propel Valentine toward her long-term business goal: upper-management or partnership within her corporation.

“Acting in stereotypically feminine ways makes it difficult to reach for the same opportunities as men... reaching for those opportunities leads to being judged as undeserving and selfish.” count services and business development. She manages digital marketing campaigns for clients such as eBay, PayPal, Shutterfly, and L’Oreal. “I have a position of real responsibility at my current agency,” she says. “I’m now at the vice president level for the first time in my 26year career.” Although the tech industry is known to be male-dominated, Tenthwave specializes in marketing and creative, which she says is more of an even male-female split. Upon reading Sandberg’s Lean In, she immediately felt a little defensive, as in “Haven’t I done enough to prove myself here?” In the chapter entitled “Success and Likability,” Sandberg covers the tricky territory of how males are perceived when they take credit

cept of negotiating always has, and still does, make me squirm. Perhaps there is a feeling of unworthiness attached to it, I don’t know.” In the book, Sandberg also discusses “The Impostor Syndrome,” which she defines as something that many women experience when they are praised for their accomplishments. “Instead of feeling worthy or their accomplishments, they feel undeserving and guilty, as if a mistake has been made,” writes Sandberg. Valentine, 48, says she can relate to this feeling, not because of her gender, but because of her age. “The only times I’ve ever felt any kind of twinge of The Impostor Syndrome has been in the past couple of years as I’ve become acutely aware of my age as compared to my younger co-workers,” she says. “And in a tech field domi-
