Early Spring Is... Tobacco has

killed 20 million Americans since 1964

Fifty years after the first surgeon general report on smoking brings even more bad news. The new report concludes that smoking causes more physical damage than previously thought, killing 480,000 Americans every year from diseases that include colorectal cancer, liver cancer and diabetes. The report also concludes that smoking causes inflammation, impairs immune function and increases the risk of death from tuberculosis, an infectious disease. Smoking also harms pregnant women and their fetuses by causing birth defects called cleft lips and palates and causing ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tubes instead of the uterus.

of the US adult 18 %population smokes Nearly 2.5 million of these premature deaths were in nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke. An additional 100,000 were babies who died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) or complications from prematurity, low birth weight or other conditions caused by parental smoking.

Phone stacking Sweet Scented Shoes (with Aromatherapy)

Let’s face it: Unless you’re on-call, there is no reason to pull out your cell phone during dinner. Not only is it rude, it distracts the caller from living in the moment. So instead of Facetime, enjoy face-to-face time with your friends by playing the phone stacking game. The rules are simple: Everyone places their phones in the middle of the table at the beginning of dinner; whoever looks at their phone before the check arrives picks up the tab. Play the game at dinner with the family, it will definitely be fun to see who ends up doing the dishes!

Melissa shoes, the iconic plastic shoe brand for more than 40 years, is now recognized by fashionistas worldwide as an eco-fashion must-have. Years ago, clothing was made to last. Nowadays, we tend to wear disposable fashion. Trends come and go, fabrics are made cheaply and unfortunately sustainability is less of a focus. You can take action and find new ways to incorporate more eco-friendly fashion into your lifestyle. You also may not know it, but you may be greener in your style than you think. A: This season. I will probably get a new pair next winter. B: Being worn for years and years. C: Walking, duh. D: Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, or another designer. M a r c h / A p r i l 2 0 1 4

If you Answered Mostly “A”s:

Wallet-Friendly over Eco-Friendly

You are budget-conscious above all when it comes to shopping. You probably don’t consider making your wardrobe more environmentally and ethically friendly because like organic produce, you think it will be too expensive—but it doesn’t always have to be. Rethink the way you shop and how you take care of your wardrobe. Sometimes spending a little more on quality means that items may last longer and you can often revive pieces before ridding of them by bringing them to the shoe repair or cleaners for a fix.

Try: H&M Conscious, the eco-friendly line from H&M made from recycled

fabrics like polyester and denim pieces made from 20% recycled cotton, which makes for trendy, yet sustainable fashion. According to fashionindie.com, so far, H&M has collected almost 7.7 million pounds of used clothing worldwide and they still are. Did you know if you donate a garment from your closet, you get a 15% discount on your next purchase there?

If you Answered Mostly “B”s:

Mother of Fashion Earth

When it comes to fashion, you will only wear it if it’s unfussy. You don’t let anything go to waste and tend to wear more natural, breathable fabrics. Did you know that you’re greener than you think? Fabrics you are already wearing like organic cotton, linen, pure cashmere and especially wool are among the most earth-friendly out there.

Try:

Eileen Fisher’s line, Eileen Fisher Ampersand. Fisher is known for her eco-friendly designs, particularly the use of organic cotton fabrics in 70% of her clothing. The company’s fair-trade project in Peru works with indigenous farmers to source cotton and produce high-quality knitted sweaters. Eileen Fisher also ensures all international factories conform to the SA8000 workplace standards, demonstrating a strong commitment to human rights.

If you Answered Mostly “C”s: Fashion Activist

You may not be concerned with the latest trends and you may spend more money on traveling than your wardrobe, but you still want to look good. You like to give back to the world, so why not do it through your closet?

Try: While incredibly trendy at the moment, you’re actually helping the world when you purchase a pair of shoes by TOMS. TOMS, which actually isn’t named after someone named Tom, but “Tomorrow’s Shoes.” The company donates and distributes a pair of shoes to kids in need all over the world with every purchase. Now they aren’t only giving back, but they created a line of shoes that are made from recycled and vegan materials, including hemp.

If you Answered Mostly “D”s: Slave to Style

You like the finer things in life and your closet often reflects that. You know all of the latest designers and trends before your friends. Just because you like your look to be elevated, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your power to be green.

Try: Lux labels like Stella McCartney that have eco-

friendly options of their upscale collections, like this vegan faux-leather version of Stella’s classic tote, which will be sure to impress and still keep a good conscience.

Girls Just Want to Have Fund$ Fru-Gal

By Beverly Fortune beverly@milieuli.com

Women now own more than 50 percent of the private wealth in the country, according to a Harvard Business Review study and have also started the most new businesses, employing nearly eight million people. These numbers show how important women have become to our economy, yet we still lag behind men in having investment strategies and long-term financial goals. So while we’re taking over the world at work, we seem to be almost insecure about our own money and how to invest and spend it. In a recent retirement report, 60 percent of women said that their greatest financial priority is “just getting by” or paying off debt. Milieu spoke to a few Long Island women who are considered experts in their field. While we could write a book about money, we’ll give you their thoughts and opinions to digest and perhaps you will be inspired to review your own finances and create a solid plan for your future.

Susan Ganz, MBA Estate and Financial Services Professional at The Center for Wealth Preservation, says that women should develop a financial blueprint for their financial house. “Your financial house should be filled with ‘rooms’ for the goals that are important to you, such as financial independence, a new home and education for your children,” she explains. Though everyone’s house is different, they all have some things in common, especially a foundation. “The foundation normally gets neglected,” Susan says, advising clients to have physical protection for their property and personal liability coverage. The next level of the financial house is income generating, including passive income like rent and disability insurance coverage. With your house in order, you can enjoy the fruits of financial independence. Susan sees women’s financial habits in colors: Red: Spends whatever is left over from the paycheck after paying bills. Blue: Saves between 15 to 20 percent of gross income and then spends the rest. Green: Has savings, protection, an investment strategy and is enjoying the dividends from her money. Susan also advises women to keep up with their financial housekeeping and avoid building what she calls a “financial junk drawer,” because all those loose papers can cause a multitude of problems. “It’s a collection of insurance policies, legal documents, savings, investment vehicles and real estate that are not necessarily coordinated around a strategic plan,” she says. “As a result, there may be various risks, tax impacts, liquidity considerations and fees that they are exposed to that may be costing them money.” Above all, Susan advises us to “Get into good habits now, take steps that are comfortable for you.”

Fit Finances When money is tight and you find yourself awash in debt, it might be wise to have someone help you get back on the road to financial wellness. Leslie Tayne, Esq. of Tayne Law Group says she is seeing a new trend with many of her clients. “They are successful professionals like teachers, attorneys and accountants earning between $150,000 to $250,000 a year and still struggling financially,” she says. Because of the stagnant economic climate and ever-rising expenses, “Everybody is basically living on a fixed income,” Leslie explains. The typical rule of thumb is one-third of your net income should be used for housing. Tayne’s clients are above the norm. “We’re seeing 50 percent and higher and they are getting into trouble,” she says, adding that, “Professional women take on a lot. They don’t necessarily reach out for help. They say they are managing, and that things will get better.”

Until Debt Do Us Part “Some women have no idea about their finances, and that’s a problem—it should be an equal partnership,” advises Leslie. “Be in the know and don’t stick your head in the sand.” After meeting with her clients and understanding their financial situation, Leslie re-creates cash flow and utilizes her resources and relationships to assess what creditors are going to be amenable to help them. “Sometimes it’s too late,” she says, adding that oftentimes her clients wish they had come to see her six to nine months sooner, before they depleted their 401K and savings. For those who seek help, “I give them relief,” says Leslie. “We strengthen their safety net, which reduces the stress financially.”

Passive Income Sources

Many women have found creative ways to make money, and a passive income stream, such as rental income, is ideal, if feasible. Others have successful online businesses on eBay and Etsy. Patti Kielawa, vice president and business development officer at Gold Coast Bank, oversees the Gold Coast Ambassador program. “Our Ambassador program pays for referrals from your friends or business associates who are interested in business banking,” she tells Milieu. “If accepted, you will receive a referral fee for the booked business.” Simply put, if you know someone in business who needs a banker, you could become a Gold Coast Ambassador. Last year, Ambassadors received referral fees for booked business ranging from $100 to as high as $45,000.

Do you know what APR (annual percentage rate) you’re paying on your credit cards, personal and auto loans? Patti recommends that before signing on the dotted line for a car you do some research first to decide if you are better off purchasing or leasing a vehicle. “If you can deduct the vehicle costs for business, consult a tax advisor to find out which is better for you,” she advises. In some cases, the expense can be deducted from your taxes. Patti also advises that if you are making a large purchase, more than $7,500, it’s wise to look into an alternative—like a personal loan—for a fixed period of time, instead of charging it on your credit card, which can take years to pay off if you are only making the minimum payment required.

Is housing still a good investment? Since 1975, housing has appreciated by an average of 4.5 percent per year. We asked Joanne Mills, a real estate professional with Exit Realty in Massapequa, her opinion. “Long Island is such a diverse market, everything varies depending on location, from prices, taxes, neighborhoods…types of housing, from single-family homes, multifamily, condo, co-ops…even mobile homes,” she says. Everyone always asks if now is the right time to buy a home. “Based on prices, mortgage rates and soaring rents, there may have never been a better time,” says Joanne. There are several considerations that purchasers should weigh, she adds. Because of a declining inventory, home prices are projected to appreciate by over 20 percent from now till 2018, for example.

M a r c h / A p r i l 2 0 1 4

The Mortgage Bankers Association, the National Association of Realtors, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have all projected that the 30-year mortgage interest rates will rise to more than 5 percent by the end of 2014. Besides the financial reasons for purchasing a home, most people buy a home for emotional reasons, like wanting a good place to raise their children, more space and a safe neighborhood.

a majority of women say their greatest financial priority is

“just getting by” or “paying off debt.” Because of maternity and family leaves, which total about 13 years, retired women will receive about half the pension benefits retired men will receive.

Go Figure Cania Infante, AVP of Bethpage Federal Credit Union, suggests that if you are considering purchasing a home for the first time or looking to move to another location, you should attend BFCU’s monthly mortgage seminars. The seminars are free and open to the general public. Their first seminar was titled “Home Shopping 101, Pre-Approval.” “Getting a pre-approval is a first step to buying a home,” says Cania. “It means that someone has looked at your income, assets and credit and you are pre-qualified for a purchase.” More than 60 people braved the snow and ice to attend that first seminar, showing, continues Cania, “that there is a need for these seminars.” “We talk about how buying and selling can affect your credit,” she explains. “What a conventional mortgage is compared to an FHA. We want those attending to have an understanding of what pre-approval is, what lenders are looking for and how long it’s good for.” Cania says that future seminars will include a panel of local experts in different areas of housing. “We will help you with budgets and savings plans as well,” she adds. “One of the things I always say is ‘You have to pay yourself first. You need to treat whatever goal you’re trying to accomplish like it’s a bill.’”

About 20 to 30 years are spent in retirement, and experts suggest you have at least 70 to 90 percent of your pre-retirement income saved for each retirement year to continue your current lifestyle. Women, however, need 100 percent to make up for lower pay, years out of the workforce, and longer lifespan.

The number of older women living in poverty is 50% higher than older men living in poverty.

Over 40% of women believe that being financially independent would make them intimidating and unattractive to men, and a third believe it can alienate other women

Women today earn the majority of doctorates and master’s degrees and nearly 60 percent of U.S. college students are women.

Family, fun & financial freedom Women want to know the secret of success. How can we balance family, friends, children and career? Milieu Magazine interviewed four superstars all born and raised on Long Island, each with an inspiring story to share. Heidi Green grew up in Roslyn and is now a single mother of twins, who turned her photography hobby into a profession. After hearing parents complain about their children’s school portraits looking posed and unanimated she decided to transition her career from teacher to children’s photographer. Heidi used a more natural approach in her photos by taking candids and capturing her subjects at just the right moment. In no time parents decided to go “Green” and hired Heidi for parties, sweet 16s, bar mitzvahs and everyday events. Tanya Zuckerbrot hailed from Great Neck and is the single mother of three, a dietician and founder of The F-Factor Diet. Tanya has authored three books and helped hundreds of women lower their cholesterol and improve their insulin levels. She is a frequent guest on national television, including: ABC’s Live with Kelly & Michael, Good Morning America, The View, The Dr. Oz Show, NBC’s Today Show, Rachael Ray, The Early Show, CBS Evening News and Fox News. Jenny Hutt of Roslyn, gives new meaning to doing it all. The mother of two, wife, lawyer and SiriusXM Radio host of “Just Jenny,” tells it like it is and is a welcoming, relatable voice to her listeners, Jenny is also a TV personality and the co-host to Dr. Drew Pinsky on HLN TV. Lyss Stern, a Five Towns native, is a wife and mother of two with a baby on the way. She is known as “The Mommy Whisperer” and is the founder of Divalysscious Moms. She’s branded herself “deLYSSciously,” reaching a network of more then 500,000 women, and has helped mothers gain the confidence they need to feel beautiful, accomplished and still have the life they’ve lived before kids. Lyss plans high-end events for mothers and children and even helped bring 50 Shades of Grey author E.L James to Long Island. All four women have proven that balancing motherhood and business meetings, finger painting and finances can be achieved, while still looking and feeling fabulous.

Heidi Green

Owner of Heidi Green Photography

For all the single ladies, Heidi proves that you can have the career and family you’ve always wanted without a ring on your finger. On PHOTOGRAPHY: “I started out photographing kids because I’ve always loved them, and since I was teaching at the time, it was the natural progression. I love their innocence and how organic they are. Their expressions and reactions are pure, and I love capturing that. Over the years, my repertoire has expanded and now I also photograph weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, engagements and all types of events and special occasions.” On Networking: “I spend as much time networking and growing my business as I do photographing. Although it’s not all day every day, I basically work seven days a week. My mind is always moving. When I’m not shooting or editing, I’m on social media (Facebook, twitter, Instagram) building my brand. My business has multiplied many times over through my connections from social media. Photographic skill and talent is only half of the game. The other half, and what some other artists lack is business sense. Luckily for me, I have a marketing mind.” On Being a Mom: “After a few bad dating choices as I approached my late 30s, I started to worry that if I didn’t meet the right guy, I might miss the chance to have a baby. The thought of that was so terrifying and completely outweighed any fears that might be associated with doing it on my own. I realized that while there’s no expiration date on falling in love, there is on fertility. It’s not something I went back and forth about. Once I decided, that was it. With the same determination that fueled my photo business, I went for it and it’s the number-one best decision I’ve ever made. Them. Tanya Zuckerbrot Founder of The F-Factor Diet & CEO OF the F-Factor Group LLC (FFactor.com)

Growing up in a family full of cooks, Tanya was destined to be in the food and beverage industry one way or another. After gaining her “freshman 15” in college, she decided to learn about the connection between food and health. “Weight loss has been the cornerstone of my practice and in my work I am part clinician, part life coach,” she tells Milieu. “At the end of the day what I love most is giving someone the gift of control and the ability to look and feel their best.” On Dining out and Dieting with F Factor: “When it comes to weight loss my

mantra is “Fiber and protein at every meal makes losing weight no big deal.” Dining out is easy on the Factor Diet because most menus offer a number of good fiber choices. I advise my clients to skip starches like potatoes and rice and double up on vegetables that are rich in fiber, such as broccoli and spinach.” On work/life Balance: “It’s never easy and I am convinced that ‘having it all’ is impossible. My three children always come first so I keep my work and social schedules flexible enough that their needs are met. I keep weekends open for quality family time. I’ve got a good support network, too, and that helps a lot.”

Tanya’S Top Cholesterol-Lowering food swaps Chopped pistachios, instead of croutons. Pistachios are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, fiber, and antioxidants, plus they also contain phytosterols, the natural plant compounds that help block absorption of dietary cholesterol. Drink red wine instead of sugary mixed cocktails. Opt for red wine, which has a tenth the carbs as a margarita, plus you get antioxidants that may help lower bad cholesterol and boost good cholesterol. Go for quinoa instead of brown rice. One cup of cooked quinoa has 60% more protein than the same measure of brown rice. Even better, quinoa contains 25% more fiber, which can help lower blood cholesterol. Ditch tortilla chips and dig into popcorn. While baked tortilla chips are healthier than fried potato chips, air-popped popcorn is a much better choice. A serving has about 80% less saturated fat than tortilla chips and double the fiber.

Lyss Stern

Founder & president of Divalysscious Moms (DIVAMOMS.COM)

Lyss unlocks the inner divas living within all her luxury lifestyle company’s clients, catering to well-heeled and trendsetting moms by planning unforgettably “fabulyss events” and activities. On becoming Divalysscious: “After my first son was born, I sought a way to meet other moms but couldn’t find a single organization that catered to new mothers who didn’t want to ditch their social life and stilettos. I created Divalysscious Moms to bridge the gap between a glamorous pre-baby lifestyle and post-baby parenthood. What started 10 years ago with just six friends has exploded into a group of nearly 500,000–and growing–powerful, influential women who want to be the best they can be for their families, while maintaining their identities.” On Philanthropy: “Divalysscious Moms do a lot of charity work. We are involved with the Max Cure Foundation, which hits home for my family as my sons’ friend Max had cancer when he was 4 years old and is now in remission. I want to show my boys the importance of giving back, and it’s already taken root in my older son Jackson, who wants to donate to breast cancer research when he becomes a professional baseball player.” On Work/Life Balance: “My life is a constant juggling act and I wouldn’t be able to get through it without my amazing support team. My mom and sister are always there from me, even if they have to travel to the city to help. My husband is my rock. He’s the most amazing father and the best partner I could ask for. We depend on each other as working parents to ensure the best for our boys–and little girl to come.”

TOP DIVALYSSCIOUS TIPS ON HOW TO BE A MOMMY AND AN ENTREPRENEUR Prioritize. Make sure that your work can be done early in the morning before the children wake up. Delegate. Always remember that being a mom and a business owner gives you the right to delegate the work, which means surrounding yourself with a great supportive team comprised of positive people who have high energy. Don’t cut corners. If you can, try to always have breakfast with your family in the mornings before you run to the office and they go to school. It is critical to build those family fundamentals at an early age so that becomes normal within the household. Take a breath. It’s always stressful being in the office, even on a good day, but that means if you don’t stop for a second to take a breath, you’re going to become way too overwhelmed. Never forget YOU. As moms and businesswomen, it’s easy to forget ourselves in the mix of things. The time we spend saying we don’t have the time is enough to give yourself a little love in return for all the hard work you do. And besides, you deserve it.

Jennifer Koppelman Hutt

SiriusXM, Internet & TV Personality, Host & HLN TV Contributor

Whether it’s live on the radio or TV, Jenny makes people feel better about themselves through entertaining and honest conversation. On GROWING UP ON LI: “I love Long Island, I’m a Long Island girl always proud. I spent seven years living in NYC and when I was ready to have a family I moved back here. I love my family. My siblings are my best friends and my support system. I grew up with constant communication and that’s what I’d love to pass on to my kids. I want them to be as close as I was with my family growing up.” On HER CAREER PATH: “I graduated from Hofstra Law. This was before Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods made it trendy. I do believe Miss Woods represents the embodiment of women. You can be super smart, super successful and be pretty and love the color pink. I knew I didn’t want to be a lawyer upon graduation but learned a practical way of thinking. The idea of wearing a suit and sitting in a courtroom didn’t sit right with me. I went to acting school and instead of falling in love with being an actress; I fell in love with my husband that I met in my class and began a family. When my daughter was 5 and my son was turning 7 my father needed a new assistant, I met Alexis Stewart and serendipitously she asked me to do a radio show, we did three TV shows, wrote a book and then I launched my own show, shortly after.” ADVICE TO WORKING MOMS: “Be kind to yourself in terms of the guilt but there are ways to manage time. We’re never going to get to do everything but you can choose what that is. My life is my work, my children, my husband and my exercise. I don’t have girls’ nights out, I’m happy staying with my family.” On HONESTY: “I tell it like it is. My main goal on my radio show is to help people feel that they can discuss anything. I talk about the light superficial topics to heavier ones because that’s what my listeners want to hear.”

“JUST JENNY” TIPS A teeny tiny cardigan is your friend. I learned this from my late, good friend, stylist Annabel Tollman. Embrace your life. The grass isn’t greener anywhere else. It just looks that way because people use filter apps. Be silly with your kids. They grow up so fast! Too fast! Write your own narrative. You decide who you are! Curl your eyelashes. Makes you look less tired instantly. Carry sugar free gym or mouthwash. Bad breath is always unacceptable. To that end... Dental floss in your bag at all times. You can thank me later! Say yes to him even when you’re not in the mood. You may just end up in that very mood! Eat Pop-Tarts. Sometimes. Yum.

has been spreading his brand of religious conservatism on the right-wing talking head circuit for years now, his failed bid for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2008 elevating him to national stardom. This January, he extended his 15 minutes by hopping aboard the Rush Limbaugh train of thought that paints women who advocate for birth control for the poor as sluts who “cannot control their libido.” It’s a tired argument that nonetheless gets recycled in the political media newsrooms to audiences who lap it up as if it’s new or at least logical. So, being the intelligent, savvy women we are, let’s take a look at his argument and put it to bed (ahem) once and for all. The full context of his argument lies in his statement that, “If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without ‘Uncle Sugar’ coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or reproductive system without the help of the government, so be it,” he said on January 23rd at a luncheon address to the Republican National Committee in Washington. The condescending connotation of the term “Uncle Sugar” aside, it seems that Huckabee is condemning women for their sexual proclivities, something we’ve

seen in human culture since the dawn of time. We look at the women of Afghanistan under the paternalistic rule of the Taliban, condemned to cover their bodies and faces; we grimace at the archaic practices of certain African tribes that put their girls through female circumcision rites, who are sure that the evils of the world arise from female sexual pleasure. Yet, these modern United States, the same paternalistic attitudes that both fear and are threatened by female sexuality are in the forefront of a major political party. What, I wonder, would happen if the female libido were to run rampant? Huckabee’s fear seems to be that the world would be overrun with the offspring of such women, granted that they were able to find male counterparts to help alleviate their sexual appetites. The man’s role, then, would be both marginalized (at the beck and call of the woman’s libido) and passive— his own sexual wants easily controlled. Havoc, it goes to reason, would ensue. Yet, it isn’t just the offspring of loose women that

$549

Huckabee fears, but specifically the offspring of poor loose women who bank accounts are at such a depleted level that they require the government to step in and pay for their birth control. We have no concern of the moneyed aristocracy of this nation overriding the world with unwanted children, but the poor with whom “slut” and “Uncle Sugar” coincide. And Democrats, by supporting access for all women to birth control, perpetuate this insanity, goes Huckabee’s argument. The truth is that both men and women are subject to the whims and desires of our reproductive process and that regardless of financial background, we have all been guilty of poor decision making. It is the less well-off women, however, who must bear the burden of these decisions, which is exactly why providing birth control is the most logical idea, from both a social and political standpoint, and from a financial one. Could it be that the only thing standing in the way is not the wanton pull of a woman’s wild libido, but the fear and judgment from the very men who count on it?

Spring Into Dating & A New Pair of Shoes

Advertorial

Back in January I made my New Year’s resolutions, and as usual, I’ve had a bit of difficulty following through. On the list: to stop eating enough sushi for two people (not going to happen), to meet Prince Charming with a briefcase (I mean it this time!), to tone my stomach to somehow resemble Demi Moore’s (who is a good 25 years older than me, mind you—another work in progress), and to volunteer for the Peace Corps (soon, soon). Why am I writing this for Milieu Magazine? I started my blog, TheYoungandTheFearless.com, to share my dating shenanigans and quirky life. I’m single, neurotic and not looking for the perfect man. (Rather, the one who reflects best off my patent leather purse.) All year round I tend to study the face of every gentleman I choose to go on a date with and think, “Yes, he could be the one.” As we sit at the bar over meaningless chatter I look into my potential partner’s eyes and think, “Hmmm. Could we have matching his and hers bathrobes, coffee mugs and French Bulldogs?” When you are in your late twenties and are the last of your friends without a mate, you become suddenly tenacious to find one; after all, dating is a numbers game, isn’t it? I decided this year I would plaster my face on 12 different sites á la VEGAS-STYLE. Want to place your bets? Springtime is akin to a brand new pair of stilettos. A new shoe is something fresh, providing the clean slate you require. Having said that, it’s time for me to slip my feet into warmer weather, stand up straight (as tall as I can for 5’2’’) and show New York what kind of footprints I’m capable of. I know I had mentioned a previous resolution of budgeting, but I am kind of craving a new pair of Prada sandals—aren’t you?

Cherrywood Foot Care A BreAkthrough LAser

advertorial

treAtment For toenAiL Fungus Many people suffer from a condition called Onychomycosis (on-ni-koh-my-ko-sis), which is better known as toenail fungus. This condition is noticeable by a thickened, yellow or cloudy appearance of an individual’s toenail plate. The toenail can become rough and crumbly or can separate from the nail bed. There is usually no pain or other bodily symptoms unless the disease is severe. The condition can often affect a person’s ability to enjoy the simple things in life such as going barefoot or wearing sandals. Is there hope for sufferers of this condition? Cherrywood Foot Care in Nassau County has just introduced a medical breakthrough by offering the newest in laser technology for toenail fungus: the Cool Breeze Laser. Cherrywood Foot Care, led by founder Dr. Joseph Burke, has been a part of the Long Island community for over 24 years. They offer quality medical and surgical foot care. The facility features cuttingedge emerging technologies such as a diagnostic ultrasound and a state-ofthe-art operating room on premise and this new laser treatment for toenail fungus. Dr. Burke and his qualified staff have the most advanced training and use the most advanced techniques in the treatment of this condition and your entire foot and ankle healthcare. Cherrywood Foot Care and Dr. Burke are leading the industry with this revolutionary treatment that quite simply can eliminate toenail fungus. The laser treatment destroys pathogens that cause toenail fungus. This is a serious and powerful medical advancement that the public needs to learn more about. This revolutionary new laser treatment appears more effective than all previous treatment options. Laser therapy for toenail fungus is completely safe, painless and has no side effects. In most cases, usually only one treatment is needed. This treatment leaves patients with a significant improvement in the health and appearance of their toenails. The laser operates in a very tight spectrum of near-infrared light. The laser light passes through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. The beam created by this specially designed medical device 40 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

kills the embedded pathogens in the nail plate and nail bed, leaving normal healthy tissue undamaged. Only minimal adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or side effects have been reported in clinical studies with this new laser technology and treatment. In contrast, topical treatments are minimally effective. “Oral medications available today can cause side effects to the liver, kidney and eyes, and may even affect your senses of taste and smell,” states Dr. Burke. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear, it takes time to grow out. A new healthy nail will be seen emerging from the cuticle area as the nails grow naturally. The average toenail replaces itself every six to nine months. Within one to three months of the procedure, a healthy new growth will be visible. The laser treatment is very effective, according to clinical studies performed in Sacramento, Calif. Most patients experience significant improvement. In most cases, the fungal nails are improved with a single treatment. The vast majority of our clients require only one treatment, which usually takes about 30 minutes. No anesthetic or injections are ever used and you will be able to resume all of your normal activities immediately after the treatment is done. It is recommended that after the treatment (just like you practice good oral hygiene to keep your teeth and gums healthy), you will need to practice good foot hygiene to keep your toenails healthy. Find out how to end your struggle with toenail fungus by visiting Cherrywoodfootcare.com or call Dr. Joseph Burke for a free consultation. Their professional medical staff will help you to feel welcome, relaxed and comfortable with a caring office experience. Cherrywood Foot Care can have you barefoot and smiling with confidence once again with this revolutionary new laser technology. It can eliminate unsightly toenail fungus giving you clear healthy toenails with an affordable one-time treatment! Guys Who Get It By Jaime Franchi

A SPORTS LEGEND OFF THE FIELD STEVE COSTELLO

VICE PRESIDENT, STEINER SPORTS

As the vice president of Steiner Sports, Steve Costello does more than connect people with the signed goods and mementos from the athletes they worship. He takes something transient and intangible—a moment in time, like a momentous catch, the memory of a game watched with someone long gone—and grounds it with something tangible that you can hold. There’s your moment, your memory, hanging on the wall. You can see it. It’s ironic that he was born just five miles from Yankee Stadium, yet never attended a game as a child, something he details in his book My Father Never Took Me to a Baseball Game, out this April. He makes up for lost time in his current position, having been directly involved in the marketing for Yankee legend Mariano Rivera’s farewell tour, attending a staggering amount of games. His job is really an extension of the person he is, the generosity of his spirit that allows him to collect what is most important to him: friendships. His roster of close pals rivals the wish list of most sports fans: Mariano Rivera is on the short list, along with Derek Jeter, Doc Gooden, and Steve Weatherford. His office resembles the ultimate man cave with signed photographs of the greats covering almost every inch: Muhammed Ali, Tom Brady, Brett Favre. There are signed basketball shoes, a football, and a picture of Fonzi

42 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

thrown in for good measure, signed “To Steve by Henry Winkler.” However, bold-faced names are not what impress Steve. And that’s what sets him apart. “I wake up every day and whether it’s giving something financially or mentoring someone, it’s really all about just helping as many people as you can, every day,” Costello tells Milieu. “That’s what it’s about.” True to his word, Costello has been involved in charity work, from time spent during his 17-year career at P.C. Richard & Son cofounding the nonprofit Candle in the Darkness Foundation with Gregg Richard, to more than 10 years hosting a fundraiser that helped support the Marty Lyons Foundation. “We used to do a fundraiser every year to help a family who had a child with a terminal illness,” Costello says of Candle in the Darkness. “That was really rewarding.” One experience sticks out in particular for Costello, who resides on the East End. New York Ranger (and Swedish Olympian in Sochi) Henrik Lundqvist enlisted Costello to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. Rather than donate a sum of cash to a large enterprise like the Red Cross to distribute at their discretion, Lundqvist wanted to see the funds go directly to affected families. With Costello’s help, he auctioned off a mask worn in a charity game for the unprecedented amount of $66,000. Former New York Mets pitcher, fourtime MLB All-Star and three-time World Series Champion Dwight Gooden can attest to Costello’s “tremendous, beautiful heart.” The two met in 2009 through Steiner Sports. Their relationship quickly morphed from transactional to a close friendship that they

milieuli.com

From Left: Andy Pettitte, former Yankee pitcher Jorge Posada, former Yankee catcher Mariano Rivera, former Yankee closer Steve Costello, vice president, Steiner Sports Derek Jeter, Yankee captain & shortstop

enjoy to this day. “Steve is passionate about helping kids who come from unfortunate circumstances,” Gooden tells Milieu. “He puts others before himself and it comes right from the heart.” Costello is part of a robust mentoring and internship program at Steiner Sports, where he works one-on-one with students, giving them invaluable instruction, with life lessons sprinkled throughout. His desk drawers overflow with handwritten letters and cards from former interns, something that speaks to his profound impact, especially in this digital age of texts and emails. His old-fashioned sense of honor, integrity and following through on promises is what he instills in his protégées and his daughters, Samantha and Madison, ages 22 and 14, and in his book: “I grew up with Vietnam and Watergate and landing on the moon and with no cell phone. We played in the streets. They weren’t shooting kids in the schools. It was a totally different environment. I think I had to put it in writing because our kids don’t believe us.” Costello believes that in this modern age, ethics never go out of style. What he values are the intangible: friendships, giving, and “the lost art of keeping your word.” Things that you cannot touch. But if you’re lucky, with Costello’s help, they can be captured. For more information, go to SteinerSports.com or contact contact Steve Costello at scostello@steinersports.com If you know a Guy Who “Gets It” and would like to nominate him for a future profile, email Beverly@MilieuLI.com.

Planning a wedding takes a tremendous amount of time and energy, so many couples are opting to go on a short wedding trip or Mini-Moon after the big bash instead of a traditional honeymoon. “At The Ramada Rockville Centre, couples can relax on one of the many local beaches, dine in a fine restaurant, then come back to their luxury suite with an in-room Jacuzzi for the ultimate Long Island Mini-Moon,” says Jillian Weston of The Ramada Rockville Centre.

Add approx. ½ can of frosting into the crumbled cake, and thoroughly mix with your hands. The dough should be a bit crumbly, too much frosting will make it too moist. Form balls of equal size, place on a wax paper covered cookie sheet and freeze. Remove from freezer and working with a few at a time, dip the top of a lollipop stick into the melted candy and insert about ½ way into the center of each cake ball. Let set for 1-2 mins., with the sticks in the air. Once dry, holding by the stick, dip into the melted candy and rotate cake pop to get rid of any excess coating. Use leftover Styrofoam to place the pops to dry or decorate. For spring flowers, let the coating dry. If using sprinkles, nuts or other candy, decorate while wet. For spring flowers, dab a small amount of melted candy on the top of the cake ball and quickly adhere colored candy corn to form a daisy shape.

Real estate Agent Joanne Mills, Exit Realty Premier Before buying or selling your home, the most important step is to find an experienced realtor. Why face the challenges alone when a real estate professional with the knowledge, the background and the skills can ensure that your transaction is a success? On Long Island there are more than 19,000 licensed real estate agents. Among the top ranked is Joanne Mills of Amityville. Since she joined Exit Realty more than nine years ago, she has made her mark. “I don’t buy or sell real estate,” Joanne explains. “I educate people on how to make the right decision to buy or sell a home.” Her active participation in many real estate associations and her enthusiasm for helping those in the industry as well as in the community has led to her being recognized many times by her peers. Joanne is the president of the Women’s Council of Realtors (WCR), a national network dedicated to empowering women to reach their potential as entrepreneurs and industry leaders. The group is also active in the community and recently chose PinkTie.org as their charity of focus for 2014. She also serves on the board of directors of the Long Island Board of Realtors (LIBOR) and sits on several committees including education, grievance, membership and public relations. Joanne says she is always seeking new members. “The ones that do participate go on to be better at what they do,” she says. “There is a level of commitment, but we want to bring that level up.” The average realtor on Long Island can make more than $100,000 annually, but it takes a lot of hard work. “It’s a business if you treat it that way,” Joanne says. “There are many skills that go into being a successful real estate professional.” For Joanne it meant becoming an expert on her local community and embracing new technology. She constantly distinguishes herself as a specialist in her field. Her reputation for her social media skills has led to speaking engagements across the country. She also has a large following here on Long Island. “I have a big footprint on a local level,” she says. Joanne formed the LI Realtor Network Facebook group that has grown to more than 600 members. But what sets Joanne apart is her willingness to assist local businesses in her hometown. She has helped many of them plan their marketing strategies and set up their Facebook pages. Joanne is also the administrator of Amityville’s Facebook page. “Once I found real estate, I found my niche,” Joanne says. “I help people achieve a dream. We look at it like it’s a puzzle and then create a strategy. It’s always new and different.” 56 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

Hardening of the arteries, or “atherosclerosis,” was assumed to be a “modern” disease caused by today’s lifestyle and bad food choices ... until now. Scientists have used whole body computed tomography (CT) scans on mummies from four ancient civilizations spanning over 4,000 years and found that they too suffered from atherosclerosis! The new study, published in the journal The Lancet, examined mummies from ancient Egypt and ancient Peru, as well as Ancestral Puebloans and Unangan hunter-gatherers. Signs of hardening of the arteries were found in all of the populations, regardless of the diet and lifestyle of that population. Some of the populations were farmers, some were foragers, some lived mostly on fish, and some were hunters and lived mostly on meat. The researchers concluded that “the presence of atherosclerosis in premodern human beings suggests that the disease is an inherent component of human aging and not characteristic of any specific diet or lifestyle.” Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is the leading Long Island provider of diagnostic imaging, including MRI scanning, using the most advanced 3T Wide-Bore (Siemens Skyra) units on the market today.

Colon Cancer: Prevention is Easier Than You Think Colorectal cancer is the second-most deadly of all cancers, killing more people (over 60,000) each year in the U.S. than either breast or prostate cancers. Without risk factors, you have a 1 in 17 chance of developing colorectal cancer during your lifetime. Yet colorectal cancer is among the most preventable and curable of all cancers... if it is found and treated early. Sadly, too many patients put off colon cancer screening because they are afraid of the discomfort or what 64 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

milieuli.com

might be found. They don’t understand that, thanks to today’s anesthesia, there is virtually no discomfort. Most polyps that are removed are benign or precancerous. Early removal of these polyps can prevent cancer. The most effective way to avoid colon cancers is a colonoscopy, the “gold standard” for diagnosing and preventing colon cancer. Meet Durango!

Durango is a lovable 2-year-old retriever mix with an exquisite white coat. He’s an extremely happy fella who loves to make new friends, be it dog, cat or human. In fact, Durango loves friends so much that he gets a little separation anxiety, so if you already have a dog for him to hang out with he has enough kisses and hugs to go around for everyone. He loves playing as much as cuddling and has a bit of a reputation as a goofball. Durango is trustworthy, loyal, obedient, cheerful and kind. Instead of giving your child allowance to spend spontaneously, introduce the concept of the Three Jars: one for spending, one for saving and one to share or give to charity. During this activity, you and your child can discuss how to divide their allowance into the three jars. This craft is simple to make; you’ll need: 3 Glass or Clear Jars 3 Mini-Chalkboard Signs or Labels Decorate the jars as your child desires.

What’s in the Cards MAR / APR

Aries March 21 to April 19

BY PSYCHICDEB

the Page of Pentacles – there is a need to take some new possibilities seriously. Money is available to you and a new job that you initially considered routine will have excellent potential. Be patient if you are to make a success of this opportunity.

Taurus April 20 to May 20

the Devil reversed – fears are released. Vanity, enemies and self needs are overcome. You should no longer allow others to keep you in a role that is uncomfortable. Do not misuse personal power to manipulate others. The lesson learned here is to be humble.

Gemini May 21 to June 20

the 3 of Wands – there is much work to do when it comes to relationships. You may be embarking on a fresh way of life and feel optimistic about the future although you need to bide your time temporarily to see how things develop.

Cancer June 21 to July 22

the Tower reversed – expect change. A situation that has been brewing for a while will come to a head but you will be prepared for it and not be caught off-guard. Truth brings positive change. You are no longer imprisoned by someone else’s ignorance.

Leo July 23 to August 22

the 4 of Swords reversed – you will notice renewed action that is aggressive and mental in nature concerning a stressful situation this month. Don’t go over board when confronting the conflict that caused you to retreat.

Virgo August 23 to September 22

the Knight of Pentacles reversed – be careful of a man who is deceptive concerning money, unable to hold a job, save money, or provide his own security. Once you get involved, it will be difficult to get out of this relationship.

Libra September 23 to October 22

the 6 of Swords – you may be ready to make a move to a new location. Your outlook is much more positive than in recent times and you are moving away physically and metal from the turbulent past. Good times are coming!

Scorpio October 23 to November 21

the Page of Wands reversed – you may do just about anything to get the attention of someone you love, don’t stoop to theatrics, it’s not becoming of you. Let them go, if they come back it was meant to be.

Sagittarius November 22 to December 21

the 10 of Swords – there is a necessity to consider circumstances carefully before making a clean break. There is a sense of inevitability, even if the change has been forced upon you.

Capricorn December 22 to January 19

the 5 of Wands reversed – there will be freedom from clashes and bickering. The situation will change for the better, but this requires the ending of the old ways and the beginning of the new. Now is the time for a new exercise program.

Aquarius January 20 to February 18

the 3 of Pentacles – drawing the 3 of Pentacle shows that your talents are paying off. You have a chance to show just what you can do and may gain some recognition for this. This is your time to shine.

Pisces February 19 to March 20

the Ace of Wands reversed – your new venture or goal may experience difficulties. Be careful of being selfish, demanding or unyielding. A little kindness goes a long way.

The Clover® Brewing System from Starbucks

Sure you could get your morning cup of coffee from the gas station, but I look to get the most from my roast and there is nothing like a full bodied bold from Starbucks. I know this is nothing new, but what you might not be familiar with is the Clover option. The Clover Brewing System is a secret weapon a few Starbucks keep under wraps for those in the know. This magical machine uses Vacuum-Press technology at the precise temperature to brew your individual cup of coffee, extracting the optimal flavor, body and aroma from a handful of beans. (Available at select Starbucks, Starbucks.com).
