from the PubLisher When you get tired do you quit? When you’re faced with a tough decision, what do you do? Thousands of Long Islanders had to answer those questions after Superstorm Sandy devoured our island last year. It’s been a long recovery, but there’s been immense progress in making life normal again. One of the hardest hit areas was on the south shore in Babylon and our writer, Christina Vercelletto was there when the flood surges overtook the island. A year later, after rebuilding her own home, she asks the question, Is Long Island Still Worth It? I hope you enjoy Christina’s very personal take on this topical question and read some of the interesting statistics she found, in case you were thinking of leaving (which I hope you’re not!).

Our autumn-themed style pages and equestrian photoshoot are stunning. Stacey Scarpone of Sea Cliff is our cover model and serves as the Executive Director of the Women’s Fund of LI, read more about Stacey on page 26. We spent the day at the Mil-Ridge Farm in Calverton where our photographer, John Vater, captured the beauty of our Long Island models, Stacey Scarpone, Sabrina Cammarata of West Babylon and Eva Gruosso of Roslyn. John once again captured the natural setting of Long Island in all its splendor in the backdrop of his photos. In this issue you’ll find it chock full of new trends, ideas, products and events on Long Island that you won’t find anywhere else. Make sure you don’t miss an issue. Go to MilieuLI.com and sign up for your free subscription, it will be mailed to you every month as our gift to you.

As we transition between summer and fall, pools are closed, boats are put in dry dock and sandals make way for socks. While window shopping out east recently a little wooden sign caught my eye and I had to buy it. It read, “If you’re lucky enough to live by the sea, you’re lucky enough.”

Warm Regards,

Beverly

Additionally, less than half of the women said they had ever discussed breast cancer risk with their doctor.

Let’s face it, even though the claw look that celebrity’s rock on their fingers is edgy and fabulous, it is not practical for everyday life. A new nail trend for fall is the almond look. The rounded tip has an edgy shape that is practical, as well as fashion-forward. Another plus to almond nails is that they are easily paired with some of the other top nail trends, such as 3D accents and half moons. “Work-wise, I think almond is easier as far as getting ready. You won’t believe how hard it is to button a button, doing a quick style, or even apply makeup with a pointy tip,” explains Josephine Abbatiello of Studio Novelle in Carle Place. (Photo Credit: OPI)

STATE-OF-THE-ART COSMETIC SURGERY IN NEW YORK Whether you live in Long Island, Manhattan or Los Angeles, you have most certainly heard of Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg. As one of New York’s top

plastic surgeons, Dr. Greenberg has many celebrities as his patients, as well as the proverbial “girl next door". Dominating the New York plastic surgery field, Dr. Greenberg is renowned for his incredible talent and skills. He can often be seen on both local and national television and takes pride in his own unique weekly radio show which airs on several New York radio stations. Along with writing his own weekly newspaper column on cosmetic surgery, he is the go-to expert for many publications and has been named one of the best Cosmetic Surgeons for eight years by the Long Island Press.

Dominating the New York plastic surgery field, Dr. Greenberg is renowned for his incredible talent and skills. Through the use of state-of-the-art, high-tech equipment, Dr. Greenberg believes he can get better results with less downtime. He has perfected the mini-incision, rapid recovery 24-hour breast augmentation, and liposuction procedures in which most patients can resume normal activities and return to work the next day. Coupling his techniques with less bruising and a shorter recovery time, he achieves excellent results. Dr. Greenberg is the first Cosmetic Surgeon on Long Island to offer Cellulaze, the first cellulite treatment clinically proven to permanently get rid of cellulite. It is the only minimally invasive laser procedure of its kind, delivering longer-lasting results after only one procedure. Dr. Greenberg has also announced his new laser inject program combining Botox® and filler injections, laser skin treatments with HydraFacial™ for the newest in facial rejuvenation. HydraFacial™ is the newest resurfacing procedure providing immediate results. Adding lasers to injections is effective in getting grid of lines and wrinkles, skin tightening, treating facial scars or areas of uneven pigmentation including brown spots. All three of these treatments together to the skin reduce the signs of aging and sun damage while providing a youthful, healthy glow. If childbirth has made some changes to your body that you would like to correct, his Mommy Makeover package provides the right combination of tummy tuck, liposuction, Cellulaze, breast lift or implants to transform you from

“new mom” to “hot mom.” The surgical package is specifically designed to target the areas of the body most affected by pregnancy. Given that more and more women are having children later in life, their bodies do not always bounce back the way they might have at a younger age. Aside from these procedures, Dr. Greenberg also has many non-surgical options for facial and body rejuvenation. In his new high-tech Glisten skin and injection spa, Dr. Greenberg offers many of the latest facial and body procedures. These non-invasive procedures can help smooth and tighten the skin, as well as reduce wrinkles and dark spots that come with aging. Dr. Greenberg’s spa also offers CoolSculpting® by ZELTIQ®, a bodysculpting, fat-freezing, non-surgical procedure that reduces inches quickly around the abdomen. CoolSculpting uses a revolutionary cooling technology to reduce areas of unwanted fat gently and effectively, and requires absolutely no downtime. Patients see noticeable, natural-looking fat reduction in treated areas within two months. Dr. Greenberg has also just introduced a new, noninvasive procedure called MiraDry to help relieve the moisture and odors for people bothered and embarrassed by underarm sweat. The miraDry procedure is done in the office noninvasively and delivers precisely controlled energy to the underarm region, completely eliminating the sweat glands. The procedure lasts about an hour and immediately results in a dramatic and lasting reduction of underarm sweat. There is minimal to no downtime following the procedure and patients should be able to return to normal activities or work immediately and can typically resume exercise within a few days.

As the author of the book, “A Little Nip, A Little Tuck,” Dr. Greenberg provides an insider’s guide to anyone interested in cosmetic enhancement. Stacey Scarpone was the ideal choice to use as our cover model. Not only is Stacey beautiful, she exemplifies our cover story theory as someone who left Long Island to travel the world and returned here to live and raise her family. Since taking the helm as Executive Director of the Women’s Fund of LI (WFLI) in 2012, Stacey has re-branded and re-imagined the nonprofit’s presence in the commmunity and under her leadership has brought more recognition to the organization, reaching an even wider audience of women. Stacey’s passion and focus has always been on issues related to the rights of women and girls, and she has gained extensive experience while living and working in Latin America, Africa, Europe and the United States. She is

an expert on human trafficking issues and has been responsible for training and directing government officials worldwide, as well as directing shelters in post-war countries and ensuring protection, economic livelihood and rights-based training for survivors of trafficking and vulnerable women and girls. Milieu asked Stacey the cover story question: Is Long Island Still Worth It? And she answered without hesitation, saying, “This is where I grew up. When I came back I found women in need right here in our own backyard. It’s worth it to focus on what their needs are here. It was a very empowering decision to move back, for myself and my family.” Thank you Stacey, we are lucky to have you back.

When I was a kid, to me, Long Island was the best place in the world. If you’ve lived here all your life, you know what I mean. But a cloud has come over the attitude of some Long Islanders. I’ve lost track of how many of my kids’ classmates moved to North Carolina, making it sound like nirvana. And it seems like almost everyone else is weighed down with stress. I was among them. Living 100 feet from the Great South Bay, my neighbors and I suffered mightily, like so many others, since last October 29th when Sandy hit Long Island. But despite panicky resolutions that we were all moving somewhere, anywhere... we stayed. We admitted it: We don’t want to live anywhere else, $150,000 mansions with $3,000 taxes or not. We wanted our kids to be able to tell their college roommates, “I’m from Long Island.” But I wasn’t sure: Are we just afraid of change? Or is there really something special about Long Island, something that makes it worth living here, still? And: Could it really be nirvana down South, or what? The answers to those questions are subjective. But I did hours of reporting, not trying to “prove” anything, as I can’t. But what I could do is give a fresh perspective about why living here is so great.

My first interview was with my nextdoor neighbor in Babylon, Christina Bein. All of my neighborhood friends are back in their houses now since Sandy, except for her. Stuck in the “cracked foundation caused by ground movement” insurance nightmare, her family of six are living in a tiny apartment, while their home is still up in the air. Literally. They started to raise it, and then the insurance denial came. If anyone had a reason to run, it was Christina. “I can’t think of anywhere we’d rather be,” she said. “What place is safe? Sandy was hell, but it was once in the 27 years I’ve lived here. How often do those poor people in the Midwest have hellish tornadoes? I’ll take my chances to be where I can have natural beauty, culture, and savvy, inspiring people around me.” She inspired me, actually...to keep interviewing. I had a feeling I was onto something. My next call was to my sister-in-law, Debra Buser, a Long Island girl until a family situation forced her to move to Langhorne, Pa. eight years ago. Her town seems pretty nice, and she’s had plenty of time to get used to things. What does she think, in retrospect? “I still tell people I’m from Long Island. I’m proud of it. I think about how staying would have exposed my children to many ways of life. Oh, and the only thing that is cheaper here are the property taxes. Everything else is about the same,” she says. Then I knew I was onto something. Next up: my son’s girlfriend’s mother, Denise Jenks of West Islip, a well-read, down-to-earth woman who speaks her mind. Bonus: She doesn’t appear to be any more loaded than the rest of us, so I was pretty sure she’s not immune to the cost of living here. Somehow, she was. “You tell me: Where else can a person get to a city like New York in a hour, beautiful beaches in 30 minutes, and magnificent mountains in three or four hours? I love that we have true diversity amongst our residents. I know the cost of living is high, but most salaries seem to reflect that. And our schools are top-notch compared to other areas of the country. It’s been a great place to raise my girls.” I took a detour here to find out whether, in fact, our schools are top-notch. And guess what? While not broken down by county, Education Week’s 2013 “Quality Counts” report of the best public school systems in the nation—taking into account spending per student, student achievement, school culture, and safety—ranks New York State third. (Pennsylvania is 18; North Carolina, 21.) I dove back into my interviews. I wanted to get the opinion of Janene Mascarella of Miller Place, who travels for her work. She’s been everywhere; I wanted to hear from someone who has a basis for comparison. “If you look past the shallow stereotypes, Long Island is full of splendor. We get to sink our toes into the sand. We get to escape to sanctuaries, like wineries, farms, topnotch restaurants with farm-to-table dining, and historical sites. And that’s just it—we don’t have to…we get to. If you look with a grateful heart—it sure is a glorious place to call home.” Which reminds me. Speaking of sticking our toes in the sand, Dr. Beach crowned Main Beach in East Hampton America’s Best Beach in 2013. And about those wineries: Wine Enthusiast just named them among the top 10 in the world. Next, I brought in a professional, whose job is to know everything there is about Long Island: Cait Russell, editor in chief

of LongIsland.com. She added this observation to the mix: “We have access to unique attractions, resources, and experiences that other regions do not, which is why people will pay a premium to live here. This is not to say that other areas do not offer great entertainment and beautiful backdrops, but Long Island does it without limiting job opportunities.” Well put, Cait! Onto Erin Zammett-Ruddy of Centerport: “My kids are having the kind of upbringing you read about in good novels: Boating, clam bakes, lifeguarding, fishing and eating what we catch. Gorgeous springs, pumpkin picking and Christmas tree farms. Snow days! Seeing the four seasons never gets old to me.” Wow. This is more fun than I thought it would be. “And there are generations of families,” Zammett-Ruddy went on. “People stick around. My kids know their friend’s grandparents. There is a real sense of stability and history and pride.” OK! I’m convinced! Long Island is worth it.

My son, Niko, started college in Chicago last year. When he left, I said, “You can handle anything; you come from tough stock.” I told him what it was like walking for miles on 9/11, tripping as I crossed the 59th Street Bridge because I was watching the hideous columns of black smoke to the south, not where I was going. And two years later during the blackout, I limped barefoot across the Brooklyn Bridge after my cheap flip flops fell apart around Spring Street. “But I haven’t been scared off! I still commute to this day!” I thumped. He looked at me like most 18-year-olds would. I wrapped up with “The point is, just remember where you’re from.” Two months later, Sandy hit. He was the only one in his dorm from a stricken area; his new pals rallied around him as news blared continuously in the student lounge, making it sound, he later told me, as though “Long Island was sinking like Atlantis.” He saw Facebook posts on his family evacuating and my rescue. The next day, his social media accounts were jammed with photos of our devastated block. The block on which he went trick or treating, hunted for Easter eggs and posed for prom pictures. It isn’t easy living on Long Island, no. But isn’t that kind of the point? Don’t you want to live where you’re pushed to be stronger, smarter, tougher? Where the easy way out is not an option. Where we are challenged, but also where we conquer and grow confident? Niko, now a sophomore, called the other day. I asked him what he still hadn’t seen in Chicago. “Most of it,” he said. “Why?! It’s a great city!” “Eh, it’s got nothing on home.” Just then, his new roommate interrupted. “Hey, Long Island! We’re late for practice.” I think I done good. 40 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

Guys Who Get It

By Jaime Franchi

Recent studies reveal that when cancer patients understand all of their options— treatments, side effects, pain-relief and the odds of survival—they live longer and enjoy a better quality of life. Although Long Island inexplicably has slightly higher instances of breast cancer than other parts of the country, oncologist Dr. Jeffrey Vacirca, CEO and chief of clinical research at North Shore Hematology Oncology Associates, the only comprehensive community cancer center on Long Island, has inside knowledge about Long Island women. “They are some of the most educated patients in the country,” he explains. “They do their research online and come in prepared with all the right questions.” Dr. Vacirca specializes in breast cancer treatment and has made it his personal mission to provide patients with uncompromising quality and attention, beginning with the very first visit. He has a policy of making it a point to see each patient within 48 hours after diagnosis. “I imagine what it would be like if I had a sister,” he explains. “I wouldn’t want her to wait a week or two after finding out she has breast cancer. I make sure I meet them early so we can devise a plan.” The treatment plan he prescribes includes the latest in cutting-edge medicine. Being on a team of experts that tests the latest developments has a huge up-side for many of his patients. “It gives me the opportunity to see all the latest therapeutics that come out in breast cancer treatment and evaluate them long before they are available,” he says. With much of the research done on premise, he is privy to all of the latest innovations in breast cancer treatment. Vacirca uses the example of the drug TDM1, that came out earlier this year, which addresses a subset of breast cancer (her2 positive), when coupled with traditional chemotherapy and Herceptin, which has been around for years, it “allows a targeted treatment that works to not only find tumor cells, but to destroy them at the same time. We were very excited about this because we were part of the clinical trial and had treated a number of patients with this drug

prior to its approval [by the FDA.] This is one of those instances where because I was involved with the clinical trial I had the experience and the knowledge of how great this drug was going to be. And understanding the biology behind it, it was very easy for me to use it with my patients who were candidates.” As the father of two daughters, his focus on breast cancer would seem fitting, but he actually came upon his vocation quite by accident. “After I got out of college, I ended up working in an oncologist’s [Dr. Hassan Rizvi] office as a medical assistant. I hadn’t planned on going into medicine, but I had the opportunity to watch him interact with his patients. He had such an unbelievable rapport with them. I had never seen a doctor who was embraced by each of his patients who walked in his door. That was what made me decide that not only was I going to be a physician, but even before I went to medical school, I knew that I was going to be an oncologist.” For more information or to contact Dr. Vacirca, go to www.NSHOA.com

URGENT!

This beauty is Dianna. Here she is enjoying a dip in the pool while trying to cool off last summer. Sadly, this is now the 4th summer Dianna has been with us! She has been sitting in a kennel in our shelter for NEARLY 4 YEARS! Is there no one out there who thinks she is worthy of their love, patience and kindness? She knows basic obedience, walks BEAUTIFULLY on lead, and takes treats very nicely. She’s a superstar when it comes to playing ball, and although she needs to work on sharing, is smart enough to make great strides when someone invests their time in her. Dianna loves to frolic and play and especially likes curling up on her blanket. We know that the person who welcomes her into their home will fall in love with her as we have. A foster home is acceptable. Another year in a kennel is not. Dianna would do best in a home with an experienced owner, no small children and possibly another dog. No cats. Being a petite miss with a low energy level, she’d be great for a senior or retiree. To learn more about Dianna or any of our other wonderful dogs, please call or email us.

Currently, SFL offers eight weekly one-hour sessions in Lake Success, East Meadow, Seaford, Bay Shore, Stony Brook and Port Jefferson. Classes include strength training using resistance bands, stability balls and floor work. “We focus on a full-body workout, and in order to reduce the risk of a lymphedema episode we alternate upper body exercises with lower body exercises. We have witnessed incredible results when rebounding (mini- trampoline) is added to the treatment regimen,” Jacqui says. (StrengthforLifeNY.org)

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiologist Performs First 3D Guided Breast Biopsy in NY

Guy Bassis, M.D., a radiologist with Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology, has performed the very first 3D guided breast biopsy in New York State. This technology uses 3D breast tomosynthesis (also known as 3D mammography) which provides physicians with 3D images that allow for greater detection of breast abnormalities. “3D mammography has allowed us to see things that we weren’t able to before,” said Bassis. “This technology has allowed us to identify hard-tofind lesions in the breast, and then, using the 3D tomography as a guide, reach areas we weren’t able to biopsy before.” 3D guided breast biopsy uses 3D mammography to create detailed images that help radiologists localize and target areas of interest. This new method of identifying biopsy sites allows for better detection of lesions, including those that are typically hard to identify, and better access to those sites. “Utilizing 3D imaging for biopsy allows us to see and biopsy lesions that we weren’t able to in the past,” added Bassis. “We now can find and examine more abnormalities with greater specificity, and this greatly helps to identify breast cancer at an earlier stage when it is more treatable.” “We are proud to be the first radiology practice in New York State to conduct 3D guided biopsy,” said Steven L. Mendelsohn, M.D., CEO/Medical Director of Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology. “This is just another example of how Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is always looking for ways to use the latest technology to provide the best possible care and improve outcomes for our patients.” Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology offers low-dose CT screening for lung cancer. Ask your physician if it is appropriate for you.

Childproof Your Health by Christina Vercelletto

It’s ironic. Moms need to be fit and energetic to take care of their kids. But sometimes the needs of their kids take priority over their own wellness. The good news? You can be a great mom and still have a healthy lifestyle, says Fitness and Wellness Expert David Kirsch, author of The Ultimate New York Body Plan. He’s also the guy credited with getting Heidi Klum back on the runway eight weeks after giving birth to her second child. We caught up with him and learned how to avoid the most common mom-health traps.

You’re the human garbage disposal. Cleaning your kid’s plate can add a lot of unwanted calories to your diet. And it’s always fries or grilled cheese crusts, isn’t it?

How to escape the trap: Fill your cabinet with healthy foods. Instead of a quick pot of white pasta for dinner, make quinoa and top that off with your favorite sauce. Ditch the donut or cookies and serve a dish of sliced fruit drizzled with natural honey. Then if you do polish off their scraps, it won’t be nearly as bad.

You’re the first one up and the last one to bed. not getting enough sleep can lead to weight gain as sleep deprivation slows down your metabolism. But there’s also this: Moms who stay up late tend to snack late. And let’s face it: You’re not tossing a salad at 11 p.m. You’re grabbing the Ben & Jerry’s.

How to escape the trap: You probably know that a routine helps children settle down for the night. Start one for yourself, and stick to it as strictly as you do for your child. It can be simple: Wash your face, brush your teeth, and slather on your favorite lotion at a set time every night. And, if your child still naps during the day, sleep when he sleeps. If you struggle to resist unloading the dishwasher during that time, think of it this way: an empty dishwasher, or your skinny jeans?

You’re a sugar addict. Moms consume more sugary beverages than women who don’t have kids, according to a recent study. Why? they need the sugar boost to fight exhaustion. But that burst of energy lasts only 30 minutes or so before a hard crash.

54 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

milieuli.com

How to escape the trap: Instead of that mocha latte with whipped cream, have coffee with a bit of half and half (it has less sugar that milk) and a monkfruit-based sweetener (Nectresse is a popular brand). It has a low glycemic index and less than three calories per serving. Another sweet idea: Make a fruit smoothie and add some kale or spinach for extra nutrients. You won’t be able to taste the greens because of the acid in the fruit.

You’re constantly stressed. Whether it’s worry over your kids’ grades, money, or work, chronic stress not only affects your mental health, but also your dress size. Many frazzled moms eat as a nervous reaction, hungry or not, without realizing it. Stress eaters almost always opt for comfort foods, which, of course, are almost always fattening.

How to escape the trap: Move! Exercising is the best way to beat stress. And even if you still overdo the mashed potatoes after opening up the credit card bill, exercise will counteract the calories. You don’t have to join a gym. Even just a walk after dinner every night with the kids is enough to loosen up body and mind.

Granola and fruit bars are your best friends. they seem healthy, but they’re bursting with sugar and preservatives, especially the ones that kids grab. Cartoon characters and neon-colored, shiny wrappers are marketing ploys designed to attract kids.

How to escape the trap: Turn to KIND bars, Kirschbars, or simply a banana when you need a portable breakfast. For snacks on the go, keep unsalted nuts or dried fruit in your bag. october 2013

Bye-bye, Disney: Singer and former Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus shocked viewers and parents around the world with her raunchy, desperate(?) sexfilled performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards at Barclays Center August 25. Her twerking and gyrating tongue has sparked widespread criticism and discussion regarding what is appropriate public behavior for children’s role models.

not so bLurred Lines By Jaime Franchi

I was reciting the lyrics to “Blurred Lines” to my husband, enjoying the look of horror that increased with every passing second. His eyes widened at the chorus, “You know you want it. But you’re a gooood girl...” When I got to “Baby, can you breathe? I got this from Jamaica,” the father in him stopped me from continuing. The father of our little girl. And the mother in me, the woman who married him, who waited for just long enough before she slept with him, shared that look on his face. “Why do people listen to that?” he asked me. “It’s rapey,” I said. “But it’s catchy,” as if that were that. “Because it’s true,” is what I didn’t say, because that was a can of worms that the feminist in me didn’t feel like getting into. Until Miley. I watched the performance-fail heard ‘round the world from my computer at 2 o’clock in the morning, when insomnia woke me from a troubled sleep. My Facebook feed was overrun with comments about the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) and my friends were Facebook-aghast at the cheap sexuality of Miley’s performance of “Don’t Stop.” She’d already stirred up some controversy with her lyrical mention of the drug Molly unhidden in the chorus. One thing kids today are lacking is subtlety. But I digress. I intuited the overtness of Miley’s performance before I saw it, and it was confirmed when I watched her tongue enter stage left before the rest of her did. And it went downhill from there. But I can’t say I was surprised: This was the same stage that saw Madonna pass Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera the baton of pop-stardom with a lascivious and un-sexy make-out session. Yawn.

We’ve watched child stars prove their adulthood via stripper poles for years now. It’s become a rite of passage— a way for them to declare the end of their childhoods. Miley did it with a drug reference and a Styrofoam finger. But at some point, didn’t we all have to do it? We’ve had to reconcile the part in us that grew into adulthood with her sexuality intact and active. The rites of passage from girl to adult is intertwined with her sexuality, but coupled with that are the judgments of society. Miley didn’t betray us by growing up and having sex. She didn’t owe her audience a perpetual Disney-fied childhood. But no one told her that. And so she rebels. She puts it in our faces. And we pretend shock. It is universally understood that as a boy changes into a man, he will succumb to sexual needs. With a wink and a nod, we accept that a boy will be interested in sex. Whether or not he “wants” it is never questioned. And it has little effect on how we view him in terms of good or bad. He isn’t bad for wanting it. Robin Thicke’s lyric, “I know you want it, but you’re a good girl,” conflates the already accepted idea that the word “but” is needed. It suggests that there’s a conflict when it comes to women that doesn’t exist when we talk about boys growing up. Justin Timberlake’s performance at the VMAs was hailed by critics as an entertaining bit by a talented singer/dancer. As a veteran of a Disney childhood and someone who also grew up onstage and in the public eye, it’s worth discussing how his performance stacked up against Miley’s. His song

lyrics are also often suggestive (and downright blatantly sexually explicit—consider “D--k in the Box”), but they are received as mainstream. It doesn’t impact the way we see his character. As it shouldn’t. His sexual coming of age was taken as a matter of course, and no one batted an eye. Of course, Justin Timberlake’s songs and performances never crossed the line from sexy to trashy. Yet, I think something we need to consider is just how narrow a line that is for a girl to traverse. And more importantly, why a girl might feel compelled to cross it in order to make a statement about herself. Why does sexuality equal rebellion for a girl, while it is taken as a natural progression of maturity for a boy? Here’s where Robin Thicke, in his disturbing song lyrics, got it right. A girl has the pressure to remain “good,” and by good we mean to keep her sexuality locked up tight in a secret room. It’s best to be demure, to play the age-old game of being sweet-talked into bed, of holding a man off until the time feels right, of not being an easy conquest. If I could write a sequel to his smash hit, I’d write into the chorus, “It’s okay to want it.” And if that got absorbed into the cultural psyche, there would be no conflict. No need for “Molly” or that little something from Jamaica that lets a girl pretend she’s high or drunk, so she can lose her inhibitions. Maybe the whole idea of conquest could go right out the window and take with it the subtle nods at rape culture that this song informs. And maybe our girls wouldn’t have to wear their sexuality in ridiculous costumes and gyrating crotches. It would be expected that they, too, will grow up. And have sex. Like the bajillions of foremothers before us. And we could get on with the show.

GoldieBlox toy company was founded last year by engineer Debbie Sterling to get girls interested in engineering, while developing their spatial skills and problem solving abilities. Debbie believes engineers can’t responsibly build our world’s future without the female perspective. She told us, “I didn't know what engineering was until my freshman year at Stanford. I signed up for ‘Mechanical Engineering 101’ at the urging of my high school math teacher. To be honest, I wasn’t excited about the class, but I gave it a try and sure enough, that class blew me away. We were building contraptions, working in teams, using creativity and design skills. I finally learned what engineering really is--building whatever you dream up in your head! I fell in love with engineering in that class and instantly declared it as my major. The rest is history.” (GoldiBlox.com)
