Long Island is so unique. We truly have it all. For those of us lucky enough to live here, our beautiful summer months are just beginning, and for visitors, Long Island gives you so many reasons to keep coming back. I recently read a letter that a woman wrote to another magazine, saying, “I would like you to tell me something I don’t know.” I thought about that, and as I looked through this issue, there are a lot of things that I learned, not rocket science, mind you, but things about the people and places on Long Island that I didn’t know existed. I love that. I hope you do, too. In this issue you’ll learn that Splish Splash is going to make history this month and that former Long Islander JoAnn Elardo is yo-ho-ho-ing with a bottle of her award-winning rum in Florida. Read more about guns, girls and the NRA and how June is the best time to buy tools. After all, Father’s Day is June 16th. Our style editor, Licia Avelar, took all of the guess work out of what to get Dad, when she did her shopping at Tanger Outlets at The Arches. It’s all on page 31. For water lovers, don’t miss our Décor de Bateau (Boat) and Décor a la Piscine (Pool) pages featuring unique things that you really do need! Read about Bobby Hazen, this month’s Guy Who Gets It and how he impacts thousands of people across Long Island. He’s someone we all need to pay attention to, especially during the summer. It’s Pride Month, and our sister publication Living Out is sponsoring PrideFest on June 8th at Heckscher State Park with special guest Debbie Gibson. Our cover story “Boutique-Calling” is about five inspiring local women who are living their dreams and making an impact on the fashion world right here. Their stories are fascinating and because our model, Erika DeVito of Dix Hills looks stunning in every style, we just had to use her on the cover as well! We will continue to feature Long Island women in Milieu. We have so many beautiful women right here, why go anywhere else? Our Milestones section is packed with ideas from brides to babies. Why travel to another island when Long Island IS a destination, especially for a wedding? Take a look at our beach bride on page 50. Bon Appétit is about having Showers of Fun at home, and our profile is on the fabulous Bohlsen Brothers, who were kind enough to share their todie-for Crab Cake recipe with our readers. Our health section covers a very relevant topic that I hope will spark some discussion: Mis-Conception: Secondary Infertility. I hope you can join us as we celebrate the newest Fortune 52 honorees on Monday, June 17th at Tanger Outlets at The Arches in Deer Park. There is no better place to meet and network than this architectural wonder that oh, by the way, is also a shopping mecca. If you’d like to attend, shoot me an email at Beverly@ MilieuLI.com. While every new Milieu Magazine reader is important, we would like to welcome our newest member to the Milieu family, Margot May, born on May 11th to Jon Sasala, our art director and his beautiful wife, Christen. What a terrific Mother’s Day present! Enjoy,

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently introduced a 10-point Women’s Equality Act, which the governor crafted with the help of a coalition of women’s groups. Issues like domestic violence, human trafficking, pay inequity and workplace sexual harassment are all on the bill, however, the “Protect a Woman’s Freedom of Choice” part of the legislation may kill it before it’s put up for vote. New York State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) has stated that he refuses to bring the bill to a vote unless the abortion provision is omitted, calling it “unnecessary.”

The National Rifle Association is gunning for a new target audience: women. Only 10 percent of NRA members are female, and they are aggressively making moves to recruit more. At the NRA’s annual convention pink rifles and handguns were among the firearms on display. They’re also selling feminine accessories like “Concealed Carrie,” a designer-like purse with hidden handgun pockets and “Flashbang,” a holster that attaches to the front or side of a bra. The NRA recently hosted a luncheon, cocktail hour and pistol shooting course that was exclusively for women to promote the new merchandise. Some say that the initiative is just a ploy to get women to vote Republican, while others believe it’s important for women to know how to use guns to protect themselves and their children.

Splish Splash, Long Island’s only waterpark, will make history this summer with the debut of Bootlegger’s Run, a rollercoaster and water ride combined into one fantastic experience. Bootlegger’s Run is the first water ride in New York State using hydromagnetic technology, allowing it to reach speeds of 30 mph. “This will be a much smoother ride,” says Splish Splash general manager Mike Bengsto. “You don’t feel yourself being pulled back uphill and it gets you back up to a high point much quicker.” The ride includes rapids, a slingshot climb and a drop that is five-stories high! Get a glimpse into the world of local divas with Bravo’s new show, Princesses: Long Island. The docu-series is much like Bravo’s other popular reality shows like Shahs of Sunset and The Real Housewives, but Princesses is the first to be based on LI. The show follows six college-educated women in their 20s and 30s who are part of the Boomerang generation. But unlike most boomerangers, these ladies seem delighted to be back in the comfort of their parents’ palatial estates, living on their dime. Or at least it seems that way. Check out the trailer at BravoTV.com/Princesses-LongIsland. Premieres Sunday, June 2 at 9 p.m.

To celebrate the launch of the luxury ice cream bar, Posen designed this gold dress covered in more than 10,000 gold sequins created from delicate sheets of 24K gold. The front door is open and noise from the outside traffic on Main Street adds to the shopping experience at Towne in Huntington, a shop filled with racks of curve-hugging ruched dresses, white blazers and colorful summer scarves. “It’s kind of SoHo inspired,” says owner Sallyann Russo, describing her store’s décor. “The exposed brick wall and racks are all custom-made out of plumbing pipe.” “It’s like bringing a little bit of downtown New York City to Huntington,” adds the former Brooklynite. If Russo had a crystal ball some 20 years ago, a boutique owner isn’t what she would have seen, a courtroom is where she felt most comfortable, or so she thought. “I got my Bachelor’s degree from Boston University and went to work for a law firm for a year before applying to law school,” she says. “I hated it so much; I knew I had to get out. It just wasn’t for me.” Her journey led her back to retail, a world she knew well since her high school days, when she spent her summers working in a local shop. She knew her future wasn’t in law, her lingo didn’t include the words “affidavit,” “appeal” or “bar,” so she dove back into fashion. “I got a job in retail to buy some time and help me figure out what I wanted to do,” she says. What Russo thought would be a short-lived career became a full-time gig. She opened two high-end contemporary clothing stores in Brooklyn and another location in New Jersey that she owned for almost two decades. Curious about the other side of retail, Russo sold her business to see where the corporate world would take her and got a job with a popular children’s boutique chain. “I became a contemporary buyer for Lester’s,” explains Russo. She spent six years behind a desk, before getting the itch to become a boutique owner once again. “After you’ve had your own store for so many years, you’ve worn so many hats…. you’re the buyer, you’re the manager, you sweep the floors, you do everything,” she says. “I remembered how great it was when I did have my own business.” This time, Russo headed east to Huntington, a town that caught her eye because of its similarities to her native Brooklyn. “I felt like I could succeed here,” she says. She signed a short-term lease and opened Towne, originally as a pop-up shop, but now an integral part of Huntington’s downtown. “I wanted to test the waters, and it went really well, so here we are.” Russo offers locals what she calls guilt-free shopping. “There was a definitely a void in this town in terms of fashion at affordable prices,” she says. “I don’t want to be H&M, Forever 21 or Zara, but I don’t want to be Scoop or Intermix either. I want to be the friendly neighborhood boutique where you can feel comfortable knowing that you can find something that won’t bust your wallet.” Towne’s racks are filled with affordable and fashionforward garments that Russo personally purchased in Los Angeles and New York City. She is constantly traveling to replenish her stock and looks for styles she knows her loyal clients will love. Russo describes her typical customer as “someone who appreciates high fashion but is tired of spending all their money on designer labels. So, they can come to Towne every week or every other week.”

Cover Story

A handful of women of all ages sit on comfy couches next to bags full of bras, hair clips and Spanx. They are waiting for Kimberly Towers, owner of Bellmore’s Runway Couture, to fit them for their dream dress. One tried on a blue sequined mermaid gown before opting for a champagne-colored version that looked perfect with her skin tone. Another tried on a short, curve-hugging embroidered gown that she declared she absolutely loved and then asked, “Can you have it ready by Saturday?” “To me they are more than clients, so many have become friends,” says Towers, who not only owns the couture evening wear boutique, but designs and creates most of her inventory. Towers’ love of fashion and design began while attending Oceanside High School, where she took a few classes in fashion. “It was between being an attorney, a dolphin trainer or a fashion designer and I’m really glad I went with fashion,” she explains of her teen career aspirations. “They introduced me to fashion and I fell in love.” Kimberly graduated from Marist College with a degree in fashion merchandising and design. She received an award and recognition as being one of the top up-and-coming designers in the United States, which allowed her to travel to France where her designs were shown in the prestigious Louvre Museum. When she returned to the U.S., Towers began working in the city but set her sights back on Long Island’s south shore, where she grew up and now resides. Towers opened Runway Couture in 2005, a boutique that offers custom-made couture eveningwear and other unique high-end styles for women. “This is home,” she says of her boutique. “There’s a need for this here and I love working with the people on Long Island. I don’t think I have to go into the city. I think Long Island needs this.” Towers, her partner Blanca and design team meet with clients to discuss the aspects of creating a custom-made garment. “I ask them about the feeling of the event because feeling has a lot to do with the design and the colors,” she explains. “Then I try them in a lot of different shapes to see what’s going to be the most flattering. After that, we figure out what excites them, what kind of look they want. Do they want crystals, do they want leather, do they want elegant or simple. You get to know that person, to absorb their style and then create a dress exactly like what they were thinking. It’s almost like each dress has the person’s personality come through, it’s amazing.” One of Towers’ more creative pieces featured glowire, the same kind of neon-lit wire that NASA uses, crocheted into a gown. A trustee of an animal foundation had satin ribbon paw prints sewn onto the train of her custom-made gown. Ramona Singer, star of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City, caused quite a stir when she wore one of Kimberly’s creations, a beautiful red ball gown, to Bethenny Frankel’s wedding. “A woman from California saw the gown on TV, flew in and we made a wedding gown version of the red dress,” Towers says. It’s not uncommon for a Runway Couture dress to be seen on the red carpet either. “My dresses have made it to the Grammys,” Towers adds proudly. Because the demand for her creations has reached far beyond Long Island, Towers is opening a larger boutique a few blocks away to make room for more custom creations, collections and ready-to-wear dresses that she personally selects. But more important than the media attention and larger retail space, are her local and loyal customers. “You really get to know people well when you work with them so closely and I get very attached to many,” she says. “We share stories and I have met so many incredible people. It is part of why I love my job so much.”

Huntington has earned the nickname “The Little Apple” for its bustling downtown, great restaurants and unique shops like Lotus Vintage, Adriene Passannante’s boutique that rivals most East Village boutiques. Entering Lotus Vintage is like embarking on an experience reminiscent of Mary Lennox’s in The Secret Garden, where treasures of the past become presents for, well, the present. From poodle pins to hot air balloon brooches, an eclectic array of items originating from the ’30s through the ’80s are on display. Metallic Whiting & Davis handbags are on display and racks of clothing line the store. A collection of hats from the ’40s, all in pristine condition and recently acquired, wait to be found by the treasure hunter. Passannante, of Bayville, opened her Huntington shop after finding success online through Etsy, a site that allows artisans to sell their handmade goods alongside vintage sellers. “As the online store got more successful, it just sparked me to pursue it full time and eventually open the store,” she says. Her passion for vintage items began when she was a teenager while looking at photos of her mother dressed in beautiful dresses from the 1950s. “She looked fabulous in all of them,” she says. “So, you know, I got a sense of that style from her.” While she admired her mother’s style, her personal style is more like something you would see on TLC’s Wives With Beehives. Passannante opts for a mixture of hippie and Bohemian, as she sits cross-legged on a stool wearing a lace top, silk-printed flared pants with tan cowboy boots peeking out. “I got them at a California vintage place and I wear them all the time,” she says lifting her hem to expose the clearly broken-in boots. A jack of all trades, there were some short stops on her journey that led Passannante to her true passion like her vintage-inspired website. “I was the first model, my then-husband took pictures of me wearing vintage clothing and I posted them online,” she says with a giggle. A lot has changed since then. She began photographing models wearing her vintage garb and gained a loyal following. The vintage guru moved to Huntington, knowing the progressive town attracted the artsy crowd. “It’s an awesome place,” she says. Downstairs, her shop is jammed with vintage items for customers to enjoy, reminisce and purchase and the upstairs is used for online store merchandise. On the retail side, there is something for everyone at Lotus Vintage. “I’m getting young girls that shop at Urban Outfitters and they realize this is the real thing that Urban is actually copying,” she says. “They’re buying funky shirts and mini dresses. And then there are older women who are buying for the memories.” For Passannante, the history behind her products make every transaction a unique one. “You’re selling an experience and a memory,” she says. “They’re not just buying a great dress, they’re thinking about the woman who wore it or what she was doing when she wore it. I’m a holder of all those memories and recycling them. All of these great things are getting a second life.”

Pink walls, printed wallpaper and crystal chandeliers glistening above remind us of a scene where Marie Antoinette nibbles on colored macaroons in her French chateau. “It’s kind of like a dream shop, a dream shopping experience,” says Jenny Montiglio, owner of Ooh La La Boutiques. The boutique’s décor sets the tone for a unique shopping experience. Montiglio travels to exotic destinations like Thailand, Indonesia and Bali to personally select the clothing that can be found perched on tables throughout the shop, like the bright-colored dresses, shorts and tanks from Ooh La La’s new Private Label collection. “We try to stay fun and flirty and we try not to be on trend with anything because in six months, it’s over,” Montiglio says. It’s a code she clearly follows, wearing bright tangerinecolored jeans and brown gladiator sandals. “We definitely gear towards more feminine, girly designs,” she says. But it wasn’t always fun for Montiglio, who opened her first location in Long Beach nearly a decade ago while still working full-time in Manhattan. It would be her first venture into the retail world, after studying animal science and retail marketing at UMASS Amherst, and realizing being a veterinarian wasn’t exactly for her. “I used to walk to the train every day and pass this handbag store,” she says. “Then one day it was out of business.” One week later, Montiglio signed the lease. “I kept my full-time job for the first year,” she says. “It was crazy, absolutely nuts, but I think making it so hectic at the beginning made the next five years that much easier. I was used to a chaotic and insane schedule.” Montiglio paid her employees out of her own paycheck for the first year, something she attributes to her current success. “It made it easier,” she says. “I didn’t have to use the store’s revenue.” In the years that followed, she was able to work at the Long Beach location full-time and then she expanded Ooh La La’s brand to Babylon, Sayville, Fire Island and Huntington. This past year, their official headquarters opened at a warehouse in Bay Shore. Montiglio says her expansion was designed to cater to the different styles that Long Island shoppers wear and to give them variations that would better fit their personalities. “Our Long Beach girl is super Boho, super beachy, super relaxed,” she says. “Our Babylon girl is our party girl, a little bit more fashion forward and likes everything that’s black. Sayville, we call her a trailblazer, she’s more earthy. Huntington is more fashion forward. They will take more chances. And Fire Island is a mix of everything.” With five stores scattered around the Island, Montiglio had her hands full. Then, three years ago, her flagship boutique in Long Beach burned to the ground in a freak fire. “Everything was ruined overnight,” she says. “We had just revamped the whole store, too.” Thankfully, the store withstood the beating many other Long Beach businesses suffered when Super Storm Sandy ripped through the city. “The building was rebuilt to code, off the ground and with major flood storm doors,” she explains. “It was one of the only stores to survive in Long Beach.” Unfortunately, Ooh La La’s Fire Island location sustained severe damage from the storm and is currently under construction. While Montiglio works to reopen the Fire Island store in time for summer, she’s hopeful to continue growing and adding new locations and sees this only as a small bump in the road. “To see my vision take off,” she says. “I’m lucky for that.”

Magazines and runways were the places Tisha Collette saw herself when she moved from California to Manhattan in the early 1990s to pursue a career in modeling. Manolo, Hermes and Cartier are names she knew she would become familiar with by way of a glamorous photo shoot or runway show. “I moved to New York when I was 19 to model,” explains Collette. “I was doing that for a few years, sustaining myself with restaurant jobs, nothing glamorous.” She left modeling for real estate, which eventually led her out east, to Southampton, where she settled down, married and had her first child, Chloe. One day in 2000, Collette made an impulsive decision that would change the course of her career forever. “I was literally driving down Jobs Lane and saw a little store for rent,” she recalls. With her list of fashion connections made during her modeling years, Collette Consignment was launched. About 75 percent of the store’s merchandise came from Collette’s own closet, which was full of fierce items that caught the eye of her first customer, before she even officially opened the doors to Collette Consignment. World-renowned fashion designer Carolina Herrera, known to frequent the posh East End town, spotted a jacket displayed in the window, knocked on the window to get her attention and became Collette Consignment’s first customer. “I thought to myself, ‘Well this is a good sign,’” says Collette. “It couldn’t be better than that and she’s become a big fan of the store and a loyal customer since then, over 12 years.” Today, most of her high end items like Manolo Blahnik shoes, Hermes Birkins and Cartier bracelets are acquired through her vast network of more than 4,000 consigners that she developed through relationships over the years. But most surprising and satisfying to Collette is that many wealthy local residents have become some of her best consigners and customers. “I would have a lot of the socialite ladies that lived in Southampton bring in bags of stuff and they would say ‘I would never buy anything used’ and literally walk out with a pair of shoes,” she says. She opened a second location in Sag Harbor, where she lives with her second husband and 5-yearold son Ryder. Her latest venture is on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. “Still to this day there are no other consignment stores that try to aesthetically please you as much as I do,” she says. “With the consignment pieces, I give them the environment that they deserve. A Chanel dress is not shoved on a rack on a plastic hanger with a bunch of other dresses where it gets damaged; It’s hung in an environment it belongs in.” Her success has allowed her to branch out from women’s consignment and offer Home Consignment, with menswear and home goods, as well as Collette’s Basement, an outlet-like store. “Never in a million years did I think consignment would be my destiny,” Collette says. “I think that we all purchase way too much and there are amazing pieces that can be re-purchased by somebody else or reused. It’s always a good way to go.”

neon has been spotted all over the runway this past year and now you’ll be seeing pops of color on invitations, too. the trick to this invitation trend is to opt for a neutral invite with a splash of hot color, such as bright lettering and designs or choose a neutral invite and add colors such as green or orange around the border. “i recently purchased neon pink, yellow and green ribbons to experiment with designs using a pop of color,” explained Jessica leigh of Jessica leigh Paperie in Bay shore. Jessica says that neon yellow used with a chevron print is very popular. “neon is great for July and august weddings, i think it’s a bold move and if you want an invitation that’s going to stand out in the mail, then it’s something you should definitely do.” (Photo from etsy shop Print Print Press that offers custom neon invites.)

Lauren and David Burman WEDDING DAtE: March 30, 2013 at the NYIt de Seversky Mansion in Old Westbury. INSPIRAtION: lauren and David wanted their wedding to be traditional, yet comfortable.

the two homebodies debated about having the wedding at their house with their beloved golden Doodles, Henry and theodore, but the old world charm of the nYit de seversky Mansion persuaded lauren and David to celebrate their special day at the venue. their wedding day began by getting ready and having their “first look” at home. “i couldn’t have asked for a more relaxed environment to get ready for the wedding than my own bathroom,” lauren says.

lauren wore a lace and crystal jacket over her Monique lhuillier dress for the ceremony with removable lace straps for the reception. “i wanted to be unique and traditional for the ceremony, but comfortable for the party.” Photography guy calaf from christian othv

the couple decided to mix in elements from different styles to remain one-of-a-kind. Dave (left) poses with a whiskey in an old tusk chair adding a Western style to the wedding theme. crystal candelabras and floral centerpieces gave the reception a vintage and delicate feel. they also used gold and crystal table accents with candles to add a touch of romance.

lauren, a dietitian, and David, who attended culinary school, took great care in deciding what they wanted to serve their guests. “the food selection at our wedding was just as important,” lauren says. for their cake, they selected something simple and elegant. “We wanted a beautiful, but not over the top cake. this was perfect and the pearl shimmery colors matched the lavender lounge themed dance area in the ballroom.”

stephanie’s dress for the Hindu ceremony was called a lehrnga and made entirely of silk. similar to the exchange of wedding rings, the circle of flower garlands around both the bride and groom’s necks represent that there is no beginning or end of the union that is being created.

During a Hindu wedding the bride is carried to the ceremony on a Dali by four male members of her family. Both her dress and the carpet are red because it is associated with the rising of the sun and regarded as the color of new life, good luck and fertility. the planet that rules marriage is Mars, which is also red.

the couple opted for a rolls royce instead of a limo to go with the classic theme of their wedding and because anil is a car fanatic. stephanie’s unique touch was to have her bridesmaids wear two different colors (fuschia pink and gold dresses). “i wanted to do something different,” stephanie explains. “Most brides choose one color for their bridesmaids.”

stephanie’s “Jasmine Haute couture” wedding dress from Princess Bridals in farmingdale was a strapless ballgown with swarovski crystals, scalloped edges and had a tulle insert on the train. “i don’t like modern style wedding dresses, i like the very classic style, and this dress was very classic.”

DIVORCE

Prenuptial Agreements For Love or money? By Robert B. Pollack, Esq. As a matrimonial attorney practicing on Long Island, I am often asked to review a prenuptial agreement (“prenup”) from a bride’s soon-to-be husband. Many times this occurs just days before the wedding, with her fiancé or his attorney saying that signing the agreement is a prerequisite for the marriage to take place. If this happens to you, do not sign anything before your experienced counsel reviews and explains the legal consequences of signing a prenup. Because New York State views marriage as an “economic partnership,” certain financial rights and obligations immediately attach and begin to grow once you say “I do.” When dissolution of a marriage is sought through divorce, separation or annulment, the “rule book” for severing the marriage is set in laws, rules and previous court decisions. These rules are impacted by the unique facts and circumstances of each individual marriage and will determine, among other things, how accumulated “marital assets” get divided, whether spousal support is to be paid and for how long, how the couple’s debts, inheritances and gifts to one another are treated and how family businesses are affected by the dissolution of the marriage. If you add in issues of health and life insurance, children’s issues including college expenses, the list can go on and on. In simple terms, a prenup serves to alter, affect and “opt out” of the “rule book” by establishing contractual provisions between the couple that upon ending the marriage, determine rights, obligations and outcomes that can vary drastically from what the law would otherwise direct. In my experience, the most common scenario is a bride-to-be being asked to sign a prenup that will protect her fiancé’s assets and limit his financial exposure to his wife if they divorce. Women are also initiating prenups in 58 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

milieuli.com

increasing numbers. Such an agreement may mean that one partner does not want to risk accepting the financial obligations that the law says would arise upon their marriage and increase over its duration. If you are re-marrying, signing a prenup can keep assets separate and preserved for your children and out of the reach of step-children. “Postnuptial” agreements, signed after a marriage takes place, generally may be used for the same purposes as a prenuptial agreement. Recently, the Courts have decided cases where prenuptial and postnuptial agreements have been challenged. It is clear from those cases that to rely upon the future enforceability of all provisions of either a prenuptial agreement or a postnuptial agreement may be a mistake, I believe. As the law in this area continues to evolve, the decision to sign a pre- or post-nuptial agreement remains a very personal choice, and should be made only after receiving advice and counsel from your own independent and experienced practitioner. Robert B. Pollack, Esq., of The Law Offices of Robert B. Pollack, PC, a boutique matrimonial and family law firm based in Jericho, covers a wide variety of legal issues concerning divorce and other family law matters as well as providing insight on those issues. Mr. Pollack’s cases have been published in the New York Law Journal, New York Times, NY Daily News, Newsday, NY Post and reported on CNN, Fox News and other media outlets. Guys Who Get It BoBBy Hazen

Founder, LI Drowning Prevention Task Force Manager, Safe-T-Swim

Summer is supposed to be a season of fun and relaxation, but those good times can quickly turn to tragedy. Drowning is the leading cause of death for Long Island children ages 1 to 4 and Bobby Hazen, founder of the Long Island Drowning Prevention Task Force and a manager at SafeT-Swim, spends each day trying to change that horrifying statistic. “I just found that it was unbelievable that every year we hear of these horrible incidents where people are dying and children are dying from drowning,” he says. “Drowning is 100-percent preventable.” Hazen has taught children as young as two months old how to save themselves in the water. He started the Long Island Drowning Prevention Task Force in 2010 as a way to educate often uninformed families on life-saving water safety tips.

“When I started researching on how we could get this started, the one thing that kept glaringly coming back to me was that all these great organizations like the Red Cross, the Board of Health and the Coast Guard had a tremendous amount of information out there, but it wasn’t getting into the people’s hands,” he says. The LIPTF consists of medical professionals from North Shore-LIJ Health Systems, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, Winthrop-University Hospital and the Nassau County Department of Health, along with other industries and businesses involved in the water industry like the New York State Lifeguards and Jimmy Hazen, Bobby’s uncle and owner of Safe-T-Swim. Hazen’s organization put together a booklet and website of vital safety tips and information for families, highlighting the dangers and risks associated with pools and open bodies of water.

milieuli.com

The booklet is distributed throughout Long Island at Saf-T-Swim locations, public pools, doctor’s offices, libraries, parks and other venues that have children’s events. In conjunction with the booklet, the LIPTF holds school assemblies for elementary school children and storybook readings at daycare centers and nursery schools to teach children about its Safer 3 program, which focuses on safer kids, safer water and safer response. Costume characters educate children from kindergarten to third grade about water safety through song and dance. The program has become a huge success, and Hazen’s calendar is packed with assemblies at nearly 50 elementary schools in Nassau and Suffolk. He recently received an invitation to present his program at New York City elementary schools as well. “Sammy Starfish, Timmy Tadpole and Gilbert Guppy teach these children the major rules

and steps that are necessary to keep them safer and to be aware of their surroundings in any open body of water,” says Hazen. “The kids get a kick out of it, they really enjoy it. There’s music and they dance with the characters and play and have a good time and the kids get a good message to take home with them.” Hazen credits the William Floyd School District with being the first school district to bring the Safer 3 program and the LIPTF downloadable curriculum into their elementary schools. Hazen’s current goal is to bring both the assemblies and the curriculum to all elementary schools across Long Island. The program works, and Hazen sees the results in the children immediately. “I actually had a child the other day that wanted to run across his pool cover and learned from Sammy Starfish that he was not supposed to, so he did not,” says Hazen. “They do pick it up. Children can be a very integral part of the learning pro—Lindsay Christ cess for these kinds of things.” If you know a Guy Who “Gets It” and would like to nominate him for a future profile, email Beverly@MilieuLI.com

By Beverly Fortune Our lives are marked by milestones; Love, marriage and children. We celebrate many of these events with family and friends, sometimes at home. But for important milestones we look for a very special place to celebrate. For Michael and Kurt Bohlsen, owners of the Bohlsen Restaurant Group, being selected to host one of these special occasions is not taken lightly. “One of the wonderful things [about our business] is that you get to witness seminal moments in people’s lives,” Michael says. “We have to recognize how special this occasion is to them. They don’t do this every day.” Owning and operating a restaurant group as successful as theirs is as much a lifestyle as a business. Each of their six high-end restaurants has a flavor of their own: Tellers: An American Chophouse; Verace: True Italian, both located in Islip, Beachtree Cafe in East Islip, H2O: Seafood Grill in Smithtown, Monsoon: Asian Kitchen and Lounge in Babylon Village and Prime: An American Kitchen and Bar in Huntington. Michael is the public face of the group and manages the daily operations while Kurt works behind the scenes with acquisitions and building management and oversees the design june 2013

and construction of each location. “Kurt and I are partners, we work very well together,” Michael says. All of their venues have a distinctive ambience and menu with two major ingredients found at each: outstanding cuisine and the highest level of service. Michael only has to look as far as the seats inside of each restaurant to gauge how well business is, and you’re likely to find him smiling. Business is that good. Things have gone so well that the brothers will be adding an upscale catering venue, The Harbor Club at Prime in Huntington, to their portfolio in the near future. “It was a natural extension of what we do,” Michael explains about their foray into catering. “People are always looking for something different, they’re openminded and want new things,” he says. Whether hosting a bridal or baby shower at the Beachtree Café or Verace, an intimate wedding at Tellers, a rehearsal dinner at Prime or H20 or a bachelorette bash at Monsoon, the Bohlsen’s know how to throw a party. “We take every event very seriously and do our best to accommodate the needs of our guests. We have a high expectation and we deliver.”

a tale about a squirrel, Nutley, who is allergic to—of all things—nuts. Nutley refuses to let his allergy slow him down, and learns he’s not alone when he shares the news with his friends. Sorkin, whose daughter has multiple food allergies, inspired the book. “It was a really a bedtime story that snowballed into something,” the Roslyn mom explains. All proceeds from the sale of the book are donated to FARE, a nonprofit dedicated to food allergy awareness and education. “At first I said I would donate a portion of the proceeds, but then I thought about it and really thoroughly felt that in order to make a difference, I wanted to donate the whole thing.” In addition to her writing, Sorkin visits schools in the tri-state area to talk to children about allergy awareness and shows students how to create a storyboard for their own book. Sorkin says that while having their own book is great for children diagnosed with food allergies to relate to, it’s something that all kids can enjoy. “As much as it’s a food allergy book, it’s meant to be fun and to show acceptance and compassion, which could translate to any part of your life.” Available at Dolphin Books, Port Washington, TheDolphinBookshop.com; The Candy Store, Albertson, TheCandyStoreonMainStreet.com; PleaseMomKids.com and BarnesAndNoble.com

Newton came in as a stray in July of 2010 when he was a young lad of only a few months. As a cute puppy, everyone wanted him, but sadly, none of his potential adoptions panned out. After 10 long months in a kennel, Newton was placed in a foster home. He’s proven to be a spunky, happy, playful fellow, always goofing off, making his foster mom laugh with his silly antics. This smarty-pants knows his basic obedience and goes is motivated to learn new things. Newton loves to play Chase, but has not quite figured out that playing Fetch means he is supposed to bring the ball back! After a few minutes of zipping around, he peeters out and lays down for petting. As a matter of fact, curled up next to you is his Number One place to relax! At the end of the day, Newton is just a cuddle-bug who wants nothing more than to be a cherished part of a loving family. Newton is neutered, housebroken, crate-trained, heartworm negative and on preventative, up-to-date on all of his shots and good with kids over age 5. He does not like cats. Athletic Sports Training, (VAST) offers a 4-week summer camp at their indoor sports facility on the campus of St. Anthony’s High School for 4th graders and up. “The idea of the camp is that by the end of the four weeks, the camper should be able to jump higher, jump further, move quicker and run faster,” says Edward Modica, ATC, head athletic trainer and VAST instructor. “Modica explains that VAST’s primary purpose is to get future freshman students ready for the intense change in training. “As an athletic trainer I’ve found that a lot of freshmen get hurt in the preseason because they’re just not ready or their bodies are not conditioned to dealing with that training. We know how to introduce and increase the intensity, so that they’re better prepared for the Fall.” ($285, FriarSportsCamp. com, MyVastTrainer.com)

Coping with Seasonal Allergies Seasonal allergies affect millions of people each year, making the beautiful spring season a time of misery for many. Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, is the most common seasonal allergy. It’s caused by the immune system overreacting to inhaled pollen from plants and trees with symptoms similar to the common cold: sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, and itchy, watery eyes. While rarely life-threatening, allergies cause lost work days, decreased productivity and school performance and a lower quality of life. There are medications which can help with some of the symptoms, usually antihistamines available both over-the-counter and by prescription. Other ways that allergies are treated are by minimizing exposure to pollen, showering frequently (to wash off any pollen), using saline sprays, decongestant sprays or steroid sprays, and desensitizing with allergy shots. If allergy symptoms do not improve, and sinus pain and pressure persist despite treatment, a physician may order a computed tomography (CT) scan of the sinuses. A CT scan will show whether the symptoms of pain and pressure are actually coming from an infection or something else, and will also show if there are any anatomical causes for the sinuses to be blocked. Local and national pollen count information is available at Pollen.com. If you suffer from seasonal allergies you might consider staying inside when the pollen count is at its highest.

Mis-Conception seCondary InFertILIty By Beverly Fortune Many couples with one child plan to have at least one more addition to their family. Some have to consider the cost of daycare, so they try to time the pregnancy and birth to coincide with the older child leaving daycare and starting kindergarten. In increasing numbers, after months of trying to conceive without results, a visit to the OB/ GYN results in a diagnosis of secondary infertility. Secondary infertility is the inability to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term after successfully and naturally conceiving at least one biological child. And, it’s more common than you might think, with an estimated 30 percent of couples having difficulty conceiving a second time. Many women first seek advice and treatment from their OB/GYN. Dr. Gary Levine, OB/GYN at Long Island Women’s Healthcare Group, says when a woman has secondary infertility, time is of the essence. “I use 30 years old as a cut off,” he says. “A woman is born with ‘x’ amount of eggs, or ovum, and the eggs are now 30 years old. Some don’t want to be fertilized as readily as eggs in their 20s. If you’re over 30 and have been trying to conceive for six months, then I’m rocking and rolling.” Secondary infertility can occur for many different reasons, age being one, and according to Dr. Bradley Trivax, 76 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

a Board-Certified Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (REI) Specialist of Reproductive Specialists of New York, “the effects of cigarettes, heavy alcohol consumption, and caffeine can play a role in secondary infertility.”

“Less stress UsUaLLy means a CoUPLe wILL Have sex more oFten. tHIs may resULt In ConCePtIon For some.” The couple usually agrees to undergo different tests to see if the problem can be isolated and treated. Many OB/GYN’s first prescribe medications like Clomid to enhance a woman’s fertility. According to Levine, if a pregnancy doesn’t result after a few months he recommends that his patient see an REI specialist. “I don’t want to waste time,” he says. Dr. Diana Chavkin, an REI specialist from Genesis Fertility & Reproductive Medicine, says that many of

Treatments can include oral medications that can induce ovulation or injectable hormones that can be used to stimulate the ovaries. Depending on the patient, these treatments and medications can be physically and emotionally draining for some women. Sometimes the process can put a strain on a marriage. “Stress plays a significant role in the process of infertility and whatever can be done to reduce this stress is imperative,” says Trivax. Chavkin recommends that her patients try relaxation techniques, meditation and yoga. “Less stress usually means a couple will have sex more often,” she says. “This may result in conception for some.” Chavkin also uses a new diagnostic blood test on some patients, the AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) which gives an estimate of the woman’s remaining egg supply or “ovarian reserve” and can be used to determine the success of using IVF. “The most important aspect of treatment is the patient’s history,” says Travix. “It is critical to know if the patient has had any prior pelvic infec-

june 2013

tions or surgeries that may play a factor in conceiving.” Secondary infertility isn’t just a physical problem, though. When you already have a child, it’s naturally assumed you can have more and people think you’re not supposed to grieve like childless couples. What many don’t understand is that when you’re told you can’t do something as natural as carrying another child, it can be devastating. Like any infertile couple, those with secondary infertility need empathy and support from their friends and family. “Many patients with infertility do not openly express their diagnosis with family and friends,” says Trivax. “Ironically, these very same patients do not realize that many of their family and friends have undergone the same process and treatment. It is a silent population. There are no wristbands or t-shirts being worn. The alarm needs to sound to allow these patients to realize that so many others have been in the same place.” There are a few resolutions to secondary infertility. Some couples opt to continue to pursue medical treatment that hopefully will produce another child, while others seek alternative family building options like adoption. For couples who have not had success, hopefully after they’ve had time to grieve, they will enjoy and appreciate their family as it already is and, if conception does occur, marvel at the way nature works.
