TREE NURSERY

The tree nursery or tree farm project is part of the environmental and economic context of La Salle, a small town in the Aosta Valley in the Italian Alps. We were concerned about the challenges of land use and the development of a new rural environment at the Urban Nature workshop. The valley is increasingly affected by the problem of erosion (urbanization, climate change) and the lack of manpower for forest management. From there was born the project of Tree Nursey which suggests in the first place a nursery for trees, with the aim of reforesting the mountain into a protection forest to help combat the effects of erosion and landslides.

Secondly, an agritourism centre to sensitize tourists to act more responsibly and participate in the mountain project while meeting the needs of the municipality which depends heavily on foreign visitors. In the discourse against the excessive urbanization of the mountain, the project proposes the restoration and reconversion of former military barracks of which only the stone walls forming the envelope remained.

To preserve the entirety of the building our intervention takes place intramuros and offers in addition a third volume on the traces of one of the barracks (today demolished and non-visible), it serves as a warehouse and respects the proportions of other buildings on site.

Project in collaboration with Alyssar Dunia.

The living spaces in the housing wing, are organized according to the rhythm of the adjoining rooms . We wanted to preserve this strong character of the barracks while adapting it to a more contemporary and free use. Half-floors are organized inside the cubic volume of each room to allow an unfolding of various spatialities according to the height of the rooms as well as to guarantee an entrance of natural light.

A CELEBRATION IN VUYLBEEK

Starting from a territory on the edge of the Soignes forest in Brussels, the Vuylbeek Valley is immensely wealthy in fauna and flora which is regulated by the strong presence of water in various formats. The themes of this exercise - the celebration - fête and the site gave rise to an ephemeral architecture, a place of gathering to highlight and celebrate the water of the Vallon.

By creating a path to which individual and/or collective practices will be integrated, the visitor is immersed in the heart of the swamp and is confronted with the nature with whom he forms a harmonious entity. The project is made up of three components creating different spatialities and relationships with the forest according to their positioning in the perimeter of the scaffolding. Complex play between the seen and the unseen, footbridges at the height or on the ground, in the perimeter or outside, generate a particular relationship to the space, energize the relationships between bodies and objects and give way to a rediscovery in full awareness of the place.

Project in collaboration with Valérie Adant.

The various scaffolding walls allow us with the addition of a translucent colored textile to frame the view and thus generate more or less intimate spaces.

OASIS HOME SANTA MONICA

In Santa Monica, the typical landscape of an American city is drawn in front of us, the American dream is being presented as a densified city, absence of nature or at best we are presented with “front lawns”.

To contrast and question this way of doing things, the project consists of a housing unit centered around an urban oasis, a beautiful garden as a central point and heart of the house.

The program provides a home for 4 people (+ 1 guest) as well as a pottery workshop separate from the residential area. The design of the spaces is done in harmony with the exterior and the beautiful garden, the living areas will all be partially open whether from the living room or the bedroom, the vegetation is held outside only by means of the windows.

The exterior platform is made dynamic because it generates an extension between inside and outside. Partitions frame subspaces along the outer corridor, providing an extension of the “private” terrace to the bedrooms.

The garden forms a vegetation curtain between the residential wing and the pottery workshop. In this way the two functions remain separate and the intimacy preserved while the view is maintained everywhere and centered around nature.

31

The rhythm of the facade is interrupted from time to time by openwork bricks that let the garden be perceived from the outside while filtering the activity of the street towards the garden.

This gesture also frees the house from its monumental and enclosed appearance.

STONEHENGE

The mystical place of Stonehenge has always been known to be at the center of many legends and fabulations. The massive stones that make up the architecture seem to have once pierced the surface of the earth from its depths to freeze forever, becoming one with the site. Since the dawn of time, this place seems to be ruled by the stars. Some stones line up with the path of the sun while visitors have the strange feeling of inhabiting the center of the universe. It is complex to resist the attraction of these rocks that seem to call you from the end of the avenue shaped by ancient peoples.

“ Mortals live while they wait for the divine as such. Hoping, they offer them the unexpected. They wait for the signs of their arrival and do not ignore the signs of their absence.”

This exercise was our first approach to architecture in the first year of bachelor’s. It offered students an opportunity to try out different means of representation and to tackle the multiple themes and specificities of architecture by the analysis of given projects. Stonehenge holds a particular place in ways that it confronted us with an autonomous and partially mystical kind of architecture. One that requires sensitivity and analytical thinking.

Project in collaboration with Valérie Adant and Lucas Boute.
