This publication is directed not only to our internal MCC campus audience, but to MCC alumni, community members, and regional partners and supporters as well. Like we say on campus, "We're all part of the MCC Family!"

We look forward to providing you a recap of campus happenings, staff, faculty, and students (both current and alumni) highlights, as well as a showcase of academics, athletics, community events, news, and other noteworthy content. In other words, just a great place to stay connected!

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

I am thrilled to share this new MCC Newsletter with all of you. This is just another example of how MCC is working hard to engage our Eastern Montana Community. I can’t help but reflect upon recent seasons like no other at MCC. I am so very proud of the work we have done during this time of COVID. Our students have been tremendous and have shown such great resiliency and grit. Their positive, can-do attitude is what the Pioneer Spirit is all about. The MCC Faculty and Staff have been outstanding in their service to our students, college, and community and have consistently have gone above and beyond in their day-to-day actions to assure that our courses and services were delivered with the highest academic rigor and quality. I also want to thank our Board of Trustees for their steady, thoughtful leadership and guidance. Finally, I want to thank the community and our alumni for their amazing support. We are so thankful for all of you, and we are proud to have you as part of our MCC Family!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT "MCC provided me the opportunity to improve my life and embark on an exciting personal and professional future."

-Dr. Hemman Dr. Eileen Seiler Hemman, a Miles City native and a member of the very first class of nursing students, received the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Hemman completed her degree at MCC in 1971 and went on to earn a BSN from Montana State University, an MS from the University of Colorado Medical Center, and an Ed.D. from Seattle University.

Dr. Hemman also honorably served her country and is now a retired O-6 United States Army Colonel. She was the recipient of many civilian and military awards including the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Order of Military Medical Merit, the Army Parachutist Badge, the Expert Field Medical Badge, Outstanding Research Mentor. Formally retired in 2019, she now resides in Steilacoom, Washington.

Carson Houser, originally from McClusky, North Dakota, graduated from MCC in 2021 with an Associate of Science degree and was an active member of the MCC Rodeo team. His involvement in volunteer projects such as Domestic Violence Education and Livestock Judging, as well as being a leader at the Ag Advancement Center on campus, led to his 2020 Campus Compact Montana Athletes in Service Award. With a ranching heritage tracing back several generations and a passion for writing, Carson published an anthology of poetry titled "Branding in the Rain: A Collection of Ranching & Rodeo Poetry" in the fall of 2021. He currently studies Ag Education at South Dakota State University and is a member of the university's rodeo team.

SCHOLARSHIP NEWS: MCC is now offering an online platform for students requiring only one application for 25+ scholarship opportunities. Prospective students can sign on, create an account, and follow prompts to complete the single application. The platform internally matches applicants with the scholarships they qualify for, and our MCC award team uses this information to finalize the awards/recipients. Mid-Rivers Technology Grant The MCC Learning Center was named a 2021 Tech Grant Winner and received $2500 by submitting a video created by current MCC Student, Sonja Johnson.

Nursing Grant The MCC Nursing Program received an SCL Health Montana Region grant in the amount of $58,406 to purchase new simulation mannequins with OWL devices (video conference cameras) to be used in clinical sites across Eastern Montana, including Sidney, Glendive, and St. John's United in Billings.

NASPA Award Dean Richard DeShields received the 2021 National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Community College Professional Award.

VOLLEYBALL WRAPS-UP

The Miles Community College Pioneer Volleyball season came to an end at the Region XIII Championship game, after a great regular season run and an impressive seven-match winning streak the led them to their final game. The Pioneers battled the NDSCS Wildcats at home during the championship game before ultimately losing three games to one. The Pioneers finished the season 17-12 and played in the first Region XIII Championship since MCC first added women's volleyball five years ago. Team members Angela Youngs (Gillette, WY) and Samantha Oliver (Havre, MT) were named Mon-Dak Conference AllConference Selections. Youngs and Olivia Cook (Belgrade, MT) also earned Mon-Dak Player of the Week.

RODEO FALL SEASON The Fall Rodeo season saw both Men's and Women's teams battling for standings in the NIRA Big Sky Region. The Men's Pioneer Rodeo Team is currently holding strong in second place, after a big win at the MSU-Northern Rodeo in Havre, Montana, while the Women's Team is sitting in seventh. Cole Trexler (Corvallis, MT) is in second place for the All-Around title, while Daylon Danks (Mandaree, ND) sits in fourth. Trexler is also third in the Saddle Bronc standings and second in Tie Down Roping, while Danks is fourth in Tie Down Roping. Blayne Hubing (Circle, MT) stands in fourth in team roping as a header, with Trexler in tenth. Danks is also ranked second as a heeler and Dawson Jackson (Delisle, Saskatchewan) in fourth.
