REPORT MILES COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION 20 22

MCC FOUNDATION

Established in 1964, the Miles Community College (MCC) Foundation is governed by a board made up of local business owners and community members. The board members are invested in the success of MCC’s students and in the growth and relevance of the college.

The grit and spirit of those who make Eastern Montana home for a season or for a lifetime is reflected by MCC students, graduates and by Foundation board members. Thanks to the work of the dedicated board members and ongoing support from generous donor contributions, the MCC Foundation is able to serve as a proud partner of Miles Community College, extending the reach and impact of the College on students and the greater eastern Montana community. In making higher education a reality for students of all background and abilities, the work of the Foundation truly has the ability to change the trajectory of someone’s life.

The Foundation accepts gifts throughout the year and invests and administers those funds to provide a growing source of support for the college, now and into the future.

This annual report celebrates a deep commitment to quality, accessible higher education and the generosity of the fantastic donors of MCC.

OF CONTENTS

FROM THE MCC FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

The Foundation has been in place for many years to support the College needs such as scholarships, equipment, athletics, and even buildings and structural improvements. Thanks to your most generous gifts in recent years we have been able to expand that support.

Our most recent large project, as most of you know, has been the building the Ag Advancement Center at our West Campus. Again, thanks to your support that complex is almost completely paid for through local donations. In addition, we have recently purchased land from the Bureau of Land Management to give us free rein on the events and activities that we can allow at the Center. The initial building loan still requires some additional funding and your continued donations would be sincerely appreciated.

Again, thanks to your generosity, the Foundation has been able to award over $360,000 in the last ten years to support student scholarship here at MCC. Thanks to our new Director of Institutional Advancement, Elizabeth Patten, those funds and scholarship are growing.

The Foundation also supports our athletic programs with funds for Assistant Coaches, athletic scholarships, and community involvement programs. We also support our Nursing Program with scholarship and individual awards to cover fees for Nursing Students who pass their certification test on their first attempt.

When the college wants to start new programs, the Foundation helps with startup costs including salaries and equipment. One that comes to mind is our Meat Processing Program.

With your continued support and donations, we can continue to make Miles Community College a place where students want to attend and achieve their goals.

Sincerely thankful,

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

Dear Friends and Supporters of Miles Community College:

I have been Director of Institutional Advancement at MCC for almost two years-what a time of learning and growth!

I love that my job is focused on supporting our students, programs, and activities here at MCC. This position, like so many at MCC, has many facets. I work closely with Ron Slinger, President of MCC, and with the MCC Foundation Board. Together, we are expanding the ways we interact with the greater MCC community, and building on the ways that we steward the gifts entrusted to us.

Scholarship gifts and other planned gifts to MCC are a wonderful way to honor a loved one, leave a legacy, and make the college experience more accessible for a variety of potential students. What a joy to work with you as you build scholarships and funds to honor your loved ones or as you build ways to personally give to the students of today and tomorrow. You are doing great things!

For some students, scholarships provide the only path to completing a degree. And for a small college like MCC, financial gifts make what we provide for students and staff so much greater than what we could ever do without your generous support!

I love that my job is focused around creating opportunities for people to give and opportunities for our students to receive. As I continue in this position, I look forward to celebrating many, many graduates who have been scholarship recipients, many projects and campus enhancements, many opportunities to support our hardworking staff, and - espcially - the donors who continue to make all of this possible.

03

FROM THE MCC COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni and Supporters,

As we close out another year, I am so very grateful for the amazing support that we receive from our community and individuals like you. The Board of Trustees, Faculty, Staff, Students and You make Miles Community College a truly special place. With everyone working together, we had another outstanding year here at MCC, and we have so much to celebrate.

Our spring enrollment was up over last year making us one of the few community colleges in the nation that saw enrollment growth. Our Nursing Program received professional accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The College received a seven-year reaffirmation of our accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).

We continued to expand our academic course offerings and transfer pathways for our students. We now have a transfer pathway in Elementary Education to Dickinson State University which helps to address the teacher shortage in Eastern Montana. The college has also added three different engineering transfer pathways with Montana Technological University.

These pathways truly allow our students to actually live our tagline of Start Here….Go Anywhere!

We have engaged the local business community with the launching of our MCC Workforce Solutions Program. This program allows the college to work with employers to create their own company-specific micro-credential. This allows them to upskill their employees in exactly the coursework they need them to learn.

We are thrilled to be partnering with Stockman Bank, Holy Rosary Healthcare, and Sidney Health Center. As you can see, we had a very successful year. We look forward to even bigger things this coming year with the completion of our strategic plan, growing enrollment, further expansion of our Workforce Solutions Program, and our high school outreach. Thank you so much for your support. We could not do any of this without you!

Go Pioneers!

FROM FINANCIAL AID & ADMISSIONS

Dear Alumni and Supporters of Miles Community College,

We are extremely grateful for the support that you provide to the students and college on a regular basis. Because of your generosity, we were able to move forward with a new scholarship awarding platform. This online tool, AwardSpring, allows the MCC Foundation to streamline the scholarship application process for MCC students. MCC recently completed our first scholarship cycle with AwardSpring.

Moving forward, we will be able to continue to improve the application process, track pertinent information about our application process, and send reminders when applications are started but not yet completed. With paper applications, there was not a way to provide support to those who started the process. The ability to communicate with applicants throughout the entire process has enabled Financial Aid and Institutional Advancement to work with prospective and current students in an entirely new manner.

MCC had 114 students who benefited from not only scholarships from the MCC Foundation, but also external scholarships brought with them when attending Miles Community College. This number does not include the number of athletic scholarships awarded each year.

Because MCC is very affordable, even the smallest scholarship makes a difference for our students.

04
We are thankful for you!

Miles Community College processes more than $300,000 in scholarships every year to currently enrolled students, transfer students, non-traditional students, and students who attend MCC upon graduation from high school. These scholarships recognize student academic success, athletic excellence, areas of need, and support specific programs at Miles Community College.

The MCC Foundation Board of Directors manages 26 funds that produce scholarships and currently provide over $45,000 each year in scholarship awards. These scholarship funds are gifts from generous donors who continue to support the college and its students.

The college looks forward to growing the number of scholarships that the MCC Foundation has to offer, while celebrating the seven new scholarships listed in this report. At print, the college has created two new additional scholarships that are set for the first awards of the 2023-2024 academic year.

This is just the beginning of the stories that the Foundation will have to celebrate next year!

AWARDSPRING

In the past year, the Director of Institutional Advancement, along with the Financial Aid Office and the Foundation Board Scholarship Committee, has worked to streamline the scholarship application process. MCC is now utilizing AwardSpring, an online platform that allows students to complete and submit a single online application to become qualified for the variety of scholarships available through the MCC Foundation.

To apply, students and prospective students can visit the AwardSpring website (milescc.awardspring.com) quickly register, and complete the single online scholarship application. AwardSpring automatically matches students to all scholarships where criteria is met. Once submission is complete, applicants receive an email confirmation as well as the list of scholarships they were matched with.

The Scholarship Committee and Financial Aid Office continue to process feedback while refining instructions and components to the online application. This is proving to be an excellent tool for students, Financial Aid staff, Director of Institutional Advancement, and the Foundation Board. The college is anticipating growth in the number of completed applications with each award cycle. The student feedback regarding AwardSpring during its first year has been overwhelmingly positive.

“This scholarship will be such a benefit and incentive toward my future educational goals.”

“This scholarship will greatly benefit me in my nursing studies. Overall my college experience has been truly life-changing. Thank you again for contributing to my future success.”

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Mary Lynne Bennett Memorial Scholarship

For 56 years, Mary Lynne Bennett was the beloved wife of Joseph Bennett, a prominent member of the MCC Foundation board.

Upon the passing of Mary Lynne this year, the MCC Foundation Board members and friends gave in her memory to form a new scholarship.

Their gifts totaled $800, with Joseph contributing an additional $200 to create the $1000 scholarship dedicated specifically to nursing students at MCC, in honor of all of the nurses who took care of Mary Lynne before her passing.

Pauline Flotkoetter Nursing Scholarship

Pauline Flotkoetter began her nursing career in 1959 at Holy Rosary and Garberson Clinic. Pauline’s thirst for knowledge in the medical field never waned.

After fifty years of nursing, she pursued her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and then her Master of Science in Nursing Education.

Pauline was known for openly sharing her nursing knowledge with her colleagues throughout her career.

At 80 years old, she took the position of Director of Nursing at Miles Community College. She shared her passion for the field of nursing with students and faculty alike and was not only a well-respected instructor, but gladly acted as a mentor to many students.

In honor of Pauline’s love for nursing and for her students, a scholarship was created in her name by her family. Her sons, their wives, and many other family and friends contributed to make the Pauline Flotkoetter Nursing Scholarship available annually to an individual nursing student at MCC.

07

Meyer Family Nursing Scholarship

The Meyer Family Nursing Scholarship was created in honor of Armin Daniel and Joyce Meyer by their three sons.

Armin Daniel Meyer (Dan) attended Elmhurst College and then the University of Illinois School of Medicine. During his surgical internship at the University of Iowa, he met his future wife, Joyce Marilyn Hultman, who was working as a nurse. They were married June 13, 1959, and began a family during Dan’s general surgery residency at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.

After a short stint at Glasgow Air Force Base in Montana, Dan’s surgical career was spent caring for many veterans of WWII, Korean, and Vietnam wars at the Veterans Hospital in Miles City. While Dan was a doctor at the VA Hospital, the family lived on the hospital grounds, neighboring the MCC campus, for several years.

Joyce Meyer attended the University Of Iowa College Of Nursing, where she received a Bachelor’s of Science in nursing. She made nursing a lifelong career, beginning as an Obstetrical Nurse at the University Hospital of Cleveland, moving on to Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, continuing her education to achieve her master’s in nursing from Montana State University Bozeman in 1994, and retiring from St. Vincent Healthcare as a mother/ newborn nurse in 1999.

In addition to her hospital work in Miles City, Joyce was an instructor for the Miles Community College Nursing Program.

The Meyer Family Nursing Scholarship is available annually to two nursing students at MCC.

Today | Tomorrow | Forever

Slinger Family Scholarship

The Slinger Family Scholarship was created by the ninth president of Miles Community College, Dr. Ron Slinger. He and his family believe strongly in the transformative power of education.

President Slinger often states that higher education is about, “Hope and opportunity–the hope for a better life and the opportunity to make that hope a reality.”

This scholarship was originally designed for female student-athletes and is now being redirected (per the donor’s wishes) toward the dual enrollment program at MCC, which provides funds which enable high school students to enroll in classes for free.

It is the hope of the Slinger Family that this scholarship provides students the same opportunity that Dr. Slinger experienced as a first-generation college student.

Byron N. Winter Scholarship

Byron “Barney” Winter was raised in Jordan, Montana, where he attended high school. Byron dropped out of college in 1969 and moved to Miles City where he worked at Pine Hills School for Boys in recreation and counseling. In 1972, he decided to return to college by attending Miles Community College, while continuing to work at Pine Hills.

After receiving his associate degree, Byron attended the University of Montana, graduating with a BS in Accounting in 1975. He then began work with the Comptroller of the Currency as a National Bank Examiner. He worked at several locations throughout the US, primarily in the western region, retiring in 2009 from the San Francisco office. Upon retirement, Byron lived in Amboy, Washington.

In 2013, he became a snowbird, living in Phoenix, Arizona, during winter months and Polson, Montana, during the summer.

Byron Winter established this scholarship to assist others from Jordan and other small Eastern Montana towns, in the pursuit of a college education. He established a similar scholarship at the University of Montana School of Business for those who wish to pursue and fufill a bachelor’s degree.

Memorials

In the fiscal year, the MCC Foundation received $6,437 given in memory of Mary Lynne Bennett, Thelma Meade, Randy Meade, D.L. Harding, Susan Wilcox, Armin and Joyce Meyer, James P. Lucas, and Pauline Flotkoetter.

This year, the MCC Foundation was the recipient of a gift in the amount of $26,241.35, disbursed by the Robert B. Gotz Charitable Trust to the MCC Foundation General Fund to be endowed and used to support the efforts and endeavors of the Foundation.

Robert B. Gotz Charitable Trust

The Gotz Charitable Trust was created in 1995 shortly before Robert B. Gotz’s death and served his sister during her life until her passing in December 2021. At the end of the quarter immediately preceding the death of his sister, the principal balance was to be distributed with 5% to the Miles Community College Foundation. The gift, presented in April of this year, was $26,241.35, restricted to endowment. The MCC Foundation has invested this gift, and the MCC Foundation board will use the earnings from this endowed fund for the best, highest use each year.

Payroll Giving

Currently 11 of the MCC faculty and staff give a total of $356.67 each month.

These funds support three separate scholarship funds in addition to the General Fund, Pioneer Athletic programs, and the Pioneer Pantry Food Bank.

Ag Advancement Center (AAC) Campaign

During 2021-2022, $79,007 was paid toward the remainder of the AAC project loan.

Of that, $52,432.12 was covered by pledged dollars and one-time gifts.

The remaining $26,574.88 was paid by the MCC Foundation out of the General Fund.

The land where the AAC sits was purchased from the Bureau of Land Management by the college for $272,000 this year.

The total to be collected on pledges is $191,500 over the next three years.

The remainder (if all pledges are collected) needed to complete the Foundation’s portion of the project is $173,050.65.

11

Cowtown Classic

The Cowtown Classic Basketball Tournament is for both boys and girls in 5th-8th grades and is set for ten competing teams per division.

Since 1993, the Cowtown Classic has been a fun and reliable fundraiser and community event. Local kids and coaches look forward to being on the MCC campus for this tournament held every March. The tournament averages 57 teams (since 2014). This year, the net income of $21,850 was split evenly between the Men’s and Women’s Pioneer Basketball teams.

Buckaroo Bash

The Buckaroo Bash is the annual fundraising event for the MCC Rodeo Team and one of the largest events held on campus.

From MCC Rodeo Coach Sylvan LaCross:

“The 2022 Buckaroo Bash was an amazing success! For my first year hosting and organizing the Bash, with great help from Wally Badgett (former MCC Rodeo Head Coach) and many of the folks on campus, I can say that this one will be tough to beat.

We set a record for ticket sales and fed nearly 400 plates of Prime Rib and “all the fixings” from our good friends at Redneck Grill. The Centra was packed with tremendous supporters, family and friends of the MCC Rodeo Team. Our silent auction displayed almost 130 items,W and the live auction was comprised of 37 items, ranging from incredible artwork to home furnishings and vacation packages.

We finished out the evening with live music from the Exit 138 band and plenty of desserts!

In total, we were fortunate enough to raise over $46,000 in profit ($72,000 taken in before expenses) to help us with this year’s operations and scholarships.

Our ’22-’23 team has grown from 13 to 28 competing members and three managers! We are so thankful for the continued support that we have been given and we look forward to inviting you all back for the 2023 Buckaroo Bash. We’ll be ready to pack the Centra once more as we plan for this great evening of fundraising and entertainment!”

WAYS TO GIVE

Give to the MCC Foundation's General Fund

These gifts will be used for the first, highest need as we support students, faculty, and staff, while enhancing the facilities at Miles Community College.

Give to the MCC Foundation's Scholarship Fund

Funds from these gifts will be specifically used to grow the amount that the Foundation is able to award each academic year.

Create and fund a scholarship with criteria that matters to you.

Give to our Athletic Department

Donate through the Pioneer Club or support an individual Athletic Team.

Give to The Learning Center

This will provide Miles Community College students and Miles City community members with FREE one-to-one tutoring, job interview prep, college support, and high school equivalency diploma coursework.

Give to the Ag Advancement Center (AAC)

These gifts will be used to complete the project and support the ongoing use of the facility.

We Invite

Each year, MCC graduates begin new careers or continue their education in pursuit of the next level degree. Your gifts support these students in their educational pursuits. Your gifts also support MCC staff and faculty as they provide the best experiences possible for our students in academics, athletics, and in community.

Each year, the MCC Foundation board members continue to collaboratively make choices to steward the gifts entrusted to them in ways that honor our donors and support the MCC community.
