Over the course of our 40+ years, we have both tried an amazing array of practices, workshops, retreats and teachers, dipped our toes in many philosophies, religions, businesses and roles and have learned that there’s a shoe for every foot, so to speak.

It is our mission at Natural Awakenings to educate and challenge our readers to think outside the box regarding our collective well-being. They were more tentative than us, knowing that the Church is controversial. What I really like is that they are promoting the opening of their public information center. Many people have an opinion about the church based on what they’ve seen in the media. But what do they really know about it? We urge you to explore for yourself, examine the pros and cons, and make your own informed decision.

Ever heard the story about the woman at the family gathering who asked her mom, ‘Why did you teach me to cut the roast in half prior to putting it in the oven?” She replied, “Because my mother taught me that way.” When they asked the grandmother, she replied, “Oh sweetie, when I was a young bride, our oven was so small I had no choice!” So much for ‘conventional wisdom.’

Natural Awakenings is first and foremost a health-living magazine, and healthy-living means that there’s a whole spectrum of products and services that make a life whole and complete. From relationships with others and a Higher Power, to finances, entertainment, food, exercise, environment, family…well, there’s really no end to the list. pprenticeship, the original career pathway, is taking on renewed prominence as today’s alternative practitioners are noticing increased demand and acceptance for their healing work.

The Mayo Clinic’s Complimentary and Integrative Medicine program strives to “address growing patient interest in wellness-promoting treatments that are not typically part of conventional medical care.” Programs exist in Front Range communities at Kaiser Permanente, Swedish Medical Center and the University of Colorado Hospital. Even modalities like energy work are mainstreamed in the form of Healing Touch, which is accepted by nursing accreditation agencies as ongoing research looks to document their impact on pain relief, recovery, and blood vitality.

When seeking an apprenticeship, consider your own healing journey. What kind of healing works for you – mental, physical, spiritual or energetic? The healing that reaches you is what you will be able to learn with ease. Sample related treatments until you find a practitioner whose work is effective. Be their client long enough to establish trust and then ask if they have trainings, classes or can mentor you individually. You may have something to offer in return. Are you skilled at research, administrative, technical or creative support? Your current profession may be a fair exchange.

Effective apprenticeships include the same core components as accredited training programs. You’ll need beginning through advanced levels of instruction in your chosen modality and should be taught ethics and best practices at each stage. Your mentor must address scope of practice – when should you refer to different practitioners? Discuss marketing, development, rate scales, taxes, licensure, certification and complete a supervised practicum before charging a fee for service. With these elements you can be confident your apprenticeship provided a solid foundation for a new healing career.

Many people feel an urge to express their sense of a life purpose through their work, what Barbara Marx Hubbard calls “vocational arousal.” Personal work as part of the soul’s higher agenda has become mainstream. Turning one’s vision into tangible action or a career however, may be challenging.

However one fills in the blank, the effect is to diminish oneself and negate our natural gifts. This shows up as feeling dull, dissatisfied with life and uninspired at work.

Life is lived based on outer conditions and expectations rather than inner callings and the vast field of possibility.

It doesn’t have to be this way. We are intended to bring our gifts forward - it is the very thing the world is asking from us.

How is this done?

First, one recognizes this is a path, not just a destination. When one is future-oriented, one’s goals and dreams remain elusive as the universe translates this as “Oh, she wants that in the future, not now.”

Rather, one must fill their energy fields with the qualities they are seeking. Notice what brings joy and a sense of aliveness, whether it seems small or unrelated to a larger life purpose. Where do you feel the sensation of joy in your body? Allow it to radiate and fill your body like rays of the sun. Imagine what it would be like to live, work and love from this experience.

Whether you are on path or feel very far from your purpose, try this experiment. These moments of aliveness bring us closer to our purpose. When we let ourselves notice and experience them, we begin to vibrate in the field of joy. Therefore we attract more of it to us. We begin to embody what we want to become.

It is not arrogant to let our gifts shine.

Our particular brand of brilliance is our highest contribution to the world. Allow it to come through and be your beauty because no face is more beautiful than yours.

The Other Problem with Trans Fats

T

o keep the holidays merry, rather than moody, check labels when stocking the pantry and avoid products containing trans fatty acids, which not only contribute to insulin resistance, inflammation and heart disease, but also exacerbate mood swings. After studying nearly 1,000 men and women of all ages and ethnic backgrounds, researchers at the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine found that consumption of dietary trans fatty acids (dTFA) was significantly associated with greater aggression and irritability.

The study, led by Associate Professor Dr. Beatrice Golomb, provides the first evidence linking dTFA with adverse behaviors, ranging from impatience to overt aggression. Analysis of participants’ baseline dietary information and behavioral assessments were adjusted for sex, age, education and use of alcohol or tobacco products.

The new finding strengthens health experts’ recommendations to avoid eating products like margarines, shortenings and prepared foods that contain trans fats and to steer clear of serving them in schools and other institutions.

Antibiotics Overused for Sinus Infections

A

study by investigators at the Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis, concludes that antibiotics typically prescribed for sinus infections aren’t any more effective than inactive placebos. “Patients don’t get better faster or have fewer symptoms when they get antibiotics,” says Dr. Jay F. Piccirillo, a professor of otolaryngology and the study’s senior author. He adds, “Our results show that antibiotics aren’t necessary for a basic [acute] sinus infection—most people get better on their own.” The researchers do suggest treating symptoms such as pain, cough and congestion and carefully watching to see if further treatment is necessary.

Fast Food that’s Good Food Mike Roberts, once the president and CEO of McDonald’s, has co-founded Lyfe Kitchen, a restaurant chain that aims to serve healthy food on a fastfood scale. The acronym Lyfe stands for Love Your Food Everyday, and the food is made without butter, cream, white sugar, white flour, high-fructose corn syrup, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), trans fats or additives.

He foresees hundreds of the alternative bistros opening across the country, all serving locally sourced, sustainable gourmet meals with the efficiency and economy usually found in a fast-food chain. n forgiveness there is power. To be free of past hurts and traumas is to allow your passion and purpose to come forth. Forgiveness allows you to accept yourself as an empowered, mature adult in charge of your own life with no fear of future hurt and unburdened with hurts from the past.

When you struggles with forgiveness as all do at times, there are steps to follow to truly and thoroughly forgive:

1.

Acknowledge you’ve been hurt and you are holding something against someone. Get more in touch with the feeling. Don’t whitewash it. Explore the feelings, perhaps with a trusted listener or counselor, and spend time exploring and perhaps journaling about it.

2.

Communicate to the person who has hurt you, either face-to-face or in writing, of how much they hurt you, even if it was unintentional. Tell them your purpose is to forgive but let them know how you experienced what happened and how it affected you. Don’t expect an apology, that’s not the point. The point is for you to stand up in empowerment and communicate as an adult.

3.

Move on to forgiveness. You don’t need to hold them to account. The laws of Karma hold and God is in charge of justice. Let go of the hurt.

Let the perpetrator face their Karma when the time comes. Don’t gloat, rather offer a prayer for them that they will face their karma with strength.

4.

Forgive them with your whole heart. Say, “I know they didn’t fully understand what they were doing.” When you get that people don’t really understand what they’re doing, you can finally let it go.

You can finally have what’s right for you, which is inner peace. You can start growing in all the areas you couldn’t because you were holding that grudge. You will discover the great blessings of forgiveness.

he human body contains four times as much lymphatic fluid than blood. However, it has no pump like the heart to keep it moving. Why is it so challenging to make the changes necessary to succeed?

The mind is divided into two hemispheres. One is responsible for rational, conscious thought and processes ideas sequentially, using language.

The other is emotional, and processes ideas simultaneously, using pictures. The emotional, subconscious mind is far more powerful than the rational, conscious mind. It controls about 95 percent of our thoughts and actions and is motivated by the pull of pleasurable rewards and the push of negative emotions.

To understand the challenge of change, think of the emotional mind as an elephant and the rational mind as the rider. As long as the elephant doesn’t have a strong desire to move in a particular direction, the rider can control the elephant. However, if the direction that the elephant wants to go in is different than what the rider has in mind, the chance of forcing the elephant radically diminishes.

The reason that so many people fail to achieve success is that the elephantine subconscious is innately averse to the new action that needs to be taken. To make tasks much easier, the elephant must be motivated to move in a certain direction or, at the very least, remain neutral and not resist the rider.

By applying some newer, cuttingedge tools that support change, such as tapping points along the body’s energy meridians, the approach used in the

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), it is not only possible to get the elephant to cease resisting, but can also shave time off the journey to personal power and accomplishment. Tapping can transform the beliefs and emotions that cause selfdoubt, self-sabotage, procrastination and other roadblocks. It is being used around the world to help people minimize or eliminate issues as varied as fears, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, food cravings and chronic pain.

What do you consider ultimate success?

hree years ago, Cindy Readnower felt as if work was swallowing her life. As a single mom with two sons to support and two franchise restaurants to run in Sarasota, Florida, she routinely would get up at 4 a.m. and go to bed after midnight. She didn’t see enough of her boys. “I never had a free moment to just shut down and think about what I really wanted,” she recalls.

Then the economy collapsed, forcing her to shutter her businesses, file for bankruptcy and consult with a career counselor to plan her next steps. Today, at 57, she’s working as a life coach and business consultant and as she sees it, living the life she is meant to live.

By her mid-40s, this San Dimas, California, resident boasted a six-figure salary and a successful, but not terribly fulfilling career doing accounting and strategic business planning. To indulge her creative side, she created colorful spreadsheets, but it wasn’t enough. “At one point, I acknowledged, ‘I am not happy walking into work anymore,’” recalls Bastian, now 52.

“I felt like a hamster on a wheel.”

Seven years ago, she walked out, and with Attwood’s help, set out to find her true callings. “People always think you have to pick just one, but you have passions that run across every aspect of your life,” she says. “I now realize I am a dancer, fashion designer, family person and spiritual woman.”

Bastian begins each week by making a color-coded “strategic plan of action,” making sure to include elements of each of her five passions: financial freedom, exceptional relationships, optimal health, successful business ventures and an alliance with God. That means she’s back in school studying fashion design, and now makes time for dancing, church, family and a part-time career-coaching business.

She says that it has been financially rough at times. But the “sacrifices”—like fewer hair appointments, fancy clothes, meals out and expensive holiday gifts for friends—have been well worth it. “I now have the flexibility, freedom and joy of knowing I am living who Juliette truly is,” she says with a smile. “I know I’ll be taken care of as long as I honor what truly matters to me.”

Start each entry with, “When my life is ideal, I am … ” (living in a beautiful house in the mountains, working in a job that changes lives, spending plenty of time with my children, etc.)

Don’t worry about how you’ll get there. Just write it down. You become whatever you are committed to.

“People often write down a passion, but if they can’t immediately see how they can manifest it, they erase it and instead write something down that they can easily put their arms around. Narrow the list to your top five passions.

Write all five passions down on five index cards.

Post passions in places you will routinely see them, such as on the bathroom mirror and refrigerator door; display them prominently on your computer.

Create a vision board (a collage of representations of your passions). “It’s an easy way to keep your attention on the things you really want to grow stronger in your life,” notes Attwood.

Use these priority passions as a guidepost. “Whenever you are faced with a choice, a decision or opportunity, choose in favor of your passions,” advises Attwood. Then run to the goal with purpose in every step.

Take the test again every six months, because passions can change and evolve over time.
