he American Holistic Nurses Association Annual Conference will be held in Colorado Springs June 3-6 at the Crowne Plaza Colorado Springs.

The conference will explore personal, communal and global environments as a means for creating an emerging framework for healing that incorporates inner peace and hope. Holistic nurses will leave this conference with a deepened awareness of the wholeness of internal and external environments and renewed commitment to their collective voice for healing.

There are more than 40 workshops offered. Attendees will receive free one-year, digital subscriptions to two professional journals from InnoVision Health Media: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, and Integrative Medicine: a Clinicians Journal.

Free Yoga in the Park

Finding More Pleasure in Life A Conversation with Dr. Christiane Northrup

hristiane Northrup, a respected obstetrician/gynecologist and visionary in women’s health and wellness, is renowned for the practical medical and emotional counsel she generously shares in her many bestselling books. Among her best known are Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and Mother-Daughter Wisdom. Now Northrup is focused on another aspect of women’s health in The Secret Pleasures of Menopause. The idea is to help women of all ages achieve vibrant health by tapping into their inner wisdom in order to experience joy and fulfillment throughout life.

Why do you believe the pursuit of pleasure is just as vital for a vibrant life as a healthy diet and exercise?

pleasure have to come first; then the lifestyle supports this.

We consider a narrow waist beautiful because it is generally healthy. Too much belly fat is unhealthy, because it produces an abnormal hormonal milieu and can lead to an earlier death from cancer, heart disease and/or diabetes. You have to exercise your body and eat well on a sustainable basis to look healthy— there’s just no way around it. The more you take care of yourself, the more pleasure you experience.

You will not stick to a healthy diet and exercise plan unless you find pleasure in the pursuit of it. You must come to this by yourself and discover that the moment-tomoment way you live your life has to be pleasurable, because there’s not a happy ending to an unhappy journey.

For years, I’ve watched people foregoing various foods to look a certain way; I see people who have perfect bodies, but absolutely no joy or life force shining behind their eyes.

How do we enhance our pleasure in life at any age?

It’s also the über neurotransmitter that signals all body cells to balance out levels of serotonin, dopamine and beta-endorphins, which produce feelings of well-being. Nitric oxide is not stored in the body, so exercise, especially aerobics, helps raise its levels in the body at any age. When someone wins an Olympic gold medal, you can be sure he or she is at the height of a nitric oxide burst.

One of the biggest keys to enhancing your pleasure is to pay attention to what feels good. This is your vital guiding factor. Simple things, like enjoying a bouquet of flowers, are important. Pleasure begins with awakening the senses. I also recommend that you start to appreciate your skin, as well as the other parts of your body that serve you well. One of my older patients told me, “I’m no longer concerned with how my legs look. What I love is that when I get up in the morning, my knees work.” I hold the position that pleasure and happiness are actually the only things that work for us and are sustainable.

Why do you believe that “life has just begun” after menopause?

When you are in midlife, you obviously have the same soul as when you were 12. However, if you have negotiated midlife skillfully by getting rid of excess baggage, thinking positively, moving into relationships that support you and making peace with those that haven’t—then you have access to the dictates of your soul.

Menopause is a wakeup call.

We’re waking up to who we are and to what we love. You find that you don’t care what other people think nearly as

n the North, spring’s balmy weather is a perfect time to plant that dream herb garden we have been thinking of all winter. In the South, it’s a good time to move container gardens inside the lanai to protect them from the intense summer sun.

If experimenting with herbs for the first time or if garden space is limited, start with these four easy-to-grow herbs. All do well anywhere in North America and can do double duty by serving pets’ health needs, too. Many of the herbs we use to liven up our foods or supplement our bodies prove to be powerful medicines for our furry and feathered friends.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Commonly known as pot marigold, calendula’s bright yellow, orange or red-orange flowers are a familiar sight in gardens and landscape designs everywhere.

Hardiness: Zone 4 (cold-hardy to -30 degrees F).

Growing tips: Sow seeds in early spring, or transplant after the danger of frost is past. Regular watering will produce blooms throughout the year.

Parts used: Harvest the flowers whenever they are in full bloom. Make into herbal preparations while fresh or air dry and store in sealed plastic bags.

Uses: Use as a tea or tincture. Fights infection and speeds healing of minor cuts, insect bites, abrasions or post-surgical incisions. When the dried flowers are boiled as a tea and cooled, it serves as a refreshing rinse for itchy skin.

Growing tips: Sow seeds in early spring (or fall in the South) by scattering them atop the ground and covering with just a dusting of soil. Keep them damp throughout germination—or plant starts from a nursery. They need full sun.

Parts used: Harvest roots after the plant is at least three years old. The leaves, stems and flowers are useful, as well.

Uses: Echinacea is often used to boost the immune system to help ward off indicated bacterial or viral infections, notes a study in the journal Phytomedicine. It is most commonly used for upper respiratory tract infections, such as the common cold in humans or kennel cough and other forms of bronchitis in dogs and cats. It is best used at the first indication of impending illness. It can be used in various forms; strong teas or tinctures low in alcohol work especially well with animals.

Parsley (Petroselium crispum)

The most common varieties have tightly curled leaves. All are useful and produce clusters of white flowers at the top of the stem. Most will grow to about three feet.

Hardiness: Zone 4. Mulch the plants deeply in the fall in areas where winters are severe.

Growing tips: Plant seeds or transplants in spring, as soon as the ground can be worked. Parsley requires deep, well-drained soil and daily watering when the weather is hot and dry.

Parts used: The leaf, root and seeds are all good.

D

id you know that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are one of the earliest examples of hydroponics? Yes, our ancestors as far back as 600 B.C. were experimenting with soil-less gardening.

The word hydroponic roughly translates to â&#x20AC;&#x153;water working.â&#x20AC;? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the most efficient and practical way for terrestrial plants to receive foodâ&#x20AC;Śin the water supply. It is a high-yielding process of up to 40% faster than soil gardening, and very clean-growing as fewer, if any, pesticides are needed. In fact, hydroponic gardens can produce up to 10 times the yield as conventional soil gardens in the same amount of space.

Perhaps most importantly, many major studies now indicate that we are eating far fewer nutrients in our food than 50 years ago due to overharvesting, pollution and other causes. As an example, over the entire 20th century the average mineral content in cabbage, lettuce, spinach and tomatoes declined from 400mg to less than 50mg, according to a 2003 report in NewsCanada.

What does this mean for you? At a time when we are all trying to conserve resources and do our part for the environment, hydroponics might be the perfect solution. Less water, less space, less chemicals and, best of all, you know where your food is coming from.

General Uses: Parsley is a nutritious supplement that may be added liberally to a companion animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s raw or canned diet. The leaf juice is rich with the antioxidant chlorophyll and useful as a breath freshener. The oils in the leaves and seeds are thought to stimulate appetite while improving digestion. The seeds also contain trace amounts of limonene, a compound that can be effective in repelling fleas. Teas or tincture preparations of the long (hard to dig) taproot are often used by veterinary herbalists as a diuretic to help rid the body of excess waste. It is also frequently used in the holistic treatment of arthritis.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)

With its lance-shaped leaves and clusters of small, white to pink blossoms, valerian is attractive to us as well as to bees and other pollinators. Roots are stringy, brown and earthily pungent. Plants can grow in excess of five feet, lending themselves as shade-bearing companions to shorter plants that need respite from afternoon sunshine.

Hardiness: Zone 4. This hardy herb can survive even the harsh winters of southern Canada and maritime Alaska.

Growing tips: Put it in the middle of the garden, where it can stand and demand attention from pollinators. Valerian is easy to grow from transplants and needs full sun.

Parts used: Preparations primarily involve the fall root. The upper parts of the plant make weaker medicine.

Uses: Long regarded by herbalists as one of the most reliable calming agents in the herbal realm, reach for it when the dog is freaking out due to thunderstorms, a trip to the groomer or the dreaded holiday fireworks (Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology). Valerian helps calm their stomachs, as well as their moods. It is also useful for cats that manifest their anxieties in the form of digestive upset.

Dandelion Bonus (Taraxacum officinale)

Think twice before yanking dandelions, which are among Earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most useful herbs. The literature reports impressive nutritive, liver supportive and digestive properties that virtually every animal needs to maintain good health.

RULES OF THUMB Safe and Effective Herb Use 1. Herbs are generally best used as part of a holistic healing effort, where all aspects of an animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health, not just symptoms, are considered.

2. Use herbs carefully and with common sense.

Although herbs tend to be gentler and safer than conventional drugs, some are strong medicine and can cause harm if misused.

3. More is not necessarily better. No two animals are alike, and some will require a larger dose than others, but always start small.

4. Avoid using a specific herbal product until you know something about the herbs that are in it. Just because an herb works well for your neighborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cat doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s necessarily appropriate for yours.

5. Buy products from well-established, reputable manufacturers. Consult with your veterinarian.

6. Always test for allergic reactions before using any herb for the first time. Place a small dab onto your animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skin. If redness or swelling occurs, the animal may be allergic to it. Also watch for watery eyes, sneezing, scratching, rashes, stomach upset or anything else out of the ordinary.

Surviving to Thriving as an Empath

A

s humans, we are feelingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; sentientâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;beings. If we are not allowed to feel our own feelings, we developâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;sometimes at a very early ageâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the ability to feel othersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; feelings. We become â&#x20AC;&#x153;empathic,â&#x20AC;? which translates literally to â&#x20AC;&#x153;feeling concern.â&#x20AC;? An empathâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;also known as clairsentient (clear feeling)â&#x20AC;&#x201D;is someone who feels energy, which offers unique challenges.

Untrained empathsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;those without energetic tools to protect themselvesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;typically live in their second chakra (just below the navel), which stores information and pictures about feelings and sexuality, and in their fourth chakra (heart), which relates to affinity for self and others. Empaths spend most of their time in the two chakras that deal with feelings and affinity because they have an affinity for others and othersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; feelings.

Untrained clairsentients or empaths are relentlessly bombarded with the emotions of the masses, often with no means of escape. Oriental Medicine Offers Solutions for Women’s Wellness I

f a new mother is exposed to cold temperatures, or goes back to normal activities before 21 days, Oriental medicine established that the mother could live with a high risk of joint problems and stroke-like symptoms at a fairly young age.

Oriental medicine has proven different causality relationships in pathology. There is a high rate of rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis -- symptoms similar to stroke -- among female Americans.

There are multiple factors to create this difference, but Oriental medicine has discovered that a difference in postpartum management is one of the biggest.

In Korea, a new mother should always wear socks and long sleeves even when her delivery is in the middle of summer. All the family members take care that she is not to perform ordinary household chores or heavy activities until at least three weeks after birth. Cold shower or eating ice cream? Absolutely not! This is considered almost insane in Korea.

Although it’s hard to find modern research on this causality, it’s interesting that Oriental medicine explains that coldness and poor care after delivery can lead to poor health, i.e. serious joint pain, lower back pain, or paralysis of muscles. High prevalence of multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis among American populations partly support that theory, because it’s normal to take a cold shower, or to eat ice cream, after the delivery. What might seem strange practices for Americans has worked for Koreans, and other Asian countries, for thousands of centuries.

Fortunately, Oriental medicine gives good advice on how to prevent and relieve issues related to poor post-partum management. Poor neuromuscular control with joint problems currently might mean that one went back to routine activities early, or exposed oneself to cold food and temperatures after the delivery. oday’s “pet parent” has a wide variety of products to aid them in their quest for good health for their beloved companion.

Osteopathy: Hands-On Healing O

steopathy is a science and art of healing that was developed by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still at the turn of the 20th century. Dr. Still was disillusioned with the medical practices of the late 1800’s, which included treatments like routine amputation, bleeding people with leeches and calomel (a mercury-based compound). He believed that many of the medications of his day were useless or even harmful.

Dr. Still had further reason to question conventional medicine when, during the meningitis outbreak of 1864, he lost three of his children to spinal meningitis while they were under the best medical care available. His grief led him to dedicate the next ten years of his life to the intensive study of anatomy and physiology in the hopes of finding a better, alternative means of healing.

What Dr. Still discovered was that the body already contained much of what we need to be healthy and that the rest could be derived from good nutrition and healthy living. His studies led him to the development of a system of diagnosis, treatment and healing which he named Osteopathy.

The foundation of Osteopathy is based on the following principles: (1) that the body is a single dynamic unit of function, (2) that the body possesses a natural self-healing mechanism and (3) that the body’s structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) are intimately related. Dr. Still recognized that the body is an integrated whole and that a problem in any one area could potentially affect the entire person. He believed we have the capacity to heal ourselves if the obstacles to healing are removed. Dr. Still identified the musculoskeletal system as a key element of health. He determined that the maintenance of proper structure by occasional treatment enabled the body to function properly and to resist disease by enhancing the immune system.

Dr. Still developed a unique method of diagnosis and treatment known as Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). OMT is a natural hands-on approach to guide the body back toward its inherent health.

It incorporates approximately fourteen different modalities aimed at relieving pain, strain, injury and stress from the body.

Most of these techniques are very gentle, working not only with the bony and muscular structures of the body, but also with the membranous, fluid and bio-energetic systems.

Cranial Osteopathy is a concept first put forth by William Garner Sutherland, D.O. who expanded on an observation previously made by his teacher, Dr. Still. Dr. Sutherland determined there is a palpable movement within the body that occurs simultaneously with the motion of the cranial bones.

Sutherland proposed a model called the “Primary Respiratory Mechanism” (PRM) to describe the inherent forces that drive this cranial rhythm. He used this terminology to suggest an essential, vital rhythmic force functioning through the cooperation of a number of physical elements.

Cranial Osteopathy uses the primary respiratory mechanism to diagnose and treat problems within the head and throughout the entire body. This natural rhythm of alternating expansion and contraction can be felt from any part of the body by a trained osteopathic physician. This is because the PRM affects every cell, influencing and guiding the physiology of the whole body.

Osteopathy, including Cranial Osteopathy, is firmly based in a deep understanding and solemn respect for the anatomy, physiology and embryology of the body. It is effective in the treatment of a number of conditions, including back, neck and joint pain, headaches, pregnancy induced pain and swelling, birth trauma, ear infections, traumatic and sports injuries, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, lymphedema, sciatica, scoliosis, asthma, irritable bowel, colitis and other disorders. Gentle osteopathic methods can be safely applied in the treatment of infants, children and adults.

Osteopathy is about finding a better way to health. The body is a dynamic fluid system seeking harmony and balance. The goal of osteopathic treatment is the removal of obstructions so that the body can use its inherent healing mechanisms to achieve this harmony, thus reestablishing health to the entire system.

Allergy Causes, Even Healthy Foods Can Cause Problems H

idden food allergies are a bigger problem than most even realize. Twelve million Americans suffer from food allergies and those are only the food allergies that people are aware of. Even patients with a balanced diet can experience, weight gain, fatigue and digestive problems. How can this be? A well-balanced diet is supposed to be a staple of good health. Good food choices are important, but the effects of hidden food allergies can leave patients not feeling their best and frustrated.

An allergy is simply an error in the immune system. As food is consumed, the body begins to break it down. If for any reason, the food is identified as harmful or not perceived as a beneficial substance, the immune system will attack it instead of the digestive system digesting it.

Allergies can develop for many different reasons. One of the most common is due to the presence of a negative external event that becomes associated with a food. For instance, a patient was trying to lose weight. After a detailed history and evaluation, it was found she grew up collecting chicken eggs. From childhood on, she couldn’t stand the sight of eggs.

She had developed a hidden allergy to eggs. Egg is one of the most common ingredients in almost everything. It is very hard to avoid. She was treated for her egg allergy and she immediately began to lose weight.

Another cause of food allergies can be over-exposure.

There is a large population of people that tend to develop allergies later in life. Reviewing their past history, they tend to have the same diet for many years. In many cases the diets may be pretty good, but due to prolonged exposure to the same foods, the body hits a threshold that no longer perceives the food as beneficial and then creates an allergy.

These hidden allergies usually present themselves as a noninflammatory condition such as fatigue, weight gain, brain fog or gas and bloating. e know vitality when we see it. People with vitality overflow with that special something; they stand out from the rest like shiny pennies.

Why do some people have more vitality than others? Vitality is often broadcast via physical traits—sparkling eyes, radiant skin or an energetic demeanor. It’s tempting to chalk it all up to good health, but there’s more to vitality than robust physiology. life habits that can help us understand and cultivate this sort of vitality. Yet in America, vitality is still viewed as the frosting on the cake of life—and not, as in Eastern cultures, its main focus.

While good health enhances and helps signify vitality, it can’t deliver all of vitality’s benefits. So, what is the secret to sustaining our vitality or getting it back?

Reconnecting with What Nourishes Dan Buettner, bestselling author of The Blue Zones, is an expert on human longevity and vitality. He’s found that vitality has as much to do with social, emotional and mental health as with physical habits. For instance, diet and exercise play a big part in vitality, but so do things like a sense of life purpose, spirituality and community.

Identifying vitality zappers is equally important. Constance Grauds, a registered pharmacist, shamana (female shaman) and author of Jungle Medicine, explains that traditional medicine men believe human disease and suffering is caused by disconnection and that its root is a core fear, or susto. She believes that most Americans are chronically afflicted by susto, living in the grip of one type of fear or another virtually all the time.

Grauds suspects that Americans’ excess susto has something to do with chronic anxieties, pressures and “little fears” they face every day: job stress,

money worries, social pressures, relationship troubles and so on. The net outcome is a massive vitality drain.

To plug “energy leaks,” we need to build connections to the things that energize and sustain us, such as meditation or prayer, healthy food, loving relationships and mindful exercise, says Grauds.

“Energy and vitality come from the joyful things we do in life that are simple, free and right under our noses,” she observes, “like petting your dog, watering your garden and taking a few deep breaths.

“Vitality is a measure of the life force within you,” she continues. “When we’re connected to our sources of vitality, not only do we have more energy to be more active and get more done, but we’re engaged, we’re present. We feel that flow of life force pumping through us.”

Where to Start Americans are slowly waking up to the fact that we need to value our vitality more deeply or we risk losing it. It’s best to review vitality zappers and enhancers daily or weekly and repair minor leaks before a trickle becomes a torrent.

We can start by finding a place of stillness. Consider meditating, keeping a journal, praying or just walking in the woods while asking our self how we are doing and feeling and what we are missing or longing for. Listen for the signals that say certain connections may have come loose, and that other factors may be pulling too strongly.

It Might Be More Than Just Cramps: Primary Dysmenorrhea by Dr. Maria Gentile

P

rimary dysmenorrhea (DIS-men-oh-ree-uh) is lower abdominal cramping pain that begins just before or during your menstrual period. It is not associated with any pelvic disease or problems. Primary dysmenorrhea starts during adolescence, usually beginning within three years after the first menstruation. It is considered the most common gynecologic problem in menstruating women, with rates between 40 and 90%.

It is reported that primary dysmenorrhea affects more than 18 million women in the United States. Approximately 5 to 15% of these women have severe pain that interferes with daily activities. The associated rates of absenteeism range from 34 to 50% representing 600 million lost work hours and $2 billion in lost productivity annually.

The risk factors for severe primary dysmenorrhea include onset of puberty at or before age 11, menstruation starting at an early age, family history of painful periods, menstrual periods lasting 7 days or more and smoking. There is also one study identifying obesity and alcohol consumption as risk factors.

It is reported that primary dysmenorrhea affects more than 18 million women in the United States.

The pain of primary dysmenorrhea starts shortly before or at the beginning of the menstrual period and peaks as the flow becomes heaviest during the first or second day of the cycle. It can be a continuous or alternating pain. It can be dull and throbbing or sharp, colicky spasms of pain. The pain may also spread to the lower back and legs. Severe cramping can be associated with nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea or constipation, headaches, light-headedness and frequent urination. It may also be associated with the passage of blood clots, which can worsen cramping. Primary dysmenorrhea has been reported to decrease in intensity after age 25 and may disappear after pregnancy.

The exact cause of primary dysmenorrhea is not completely understood, but it is intimately associated with the menstrual cycle itself. During the menstrual cycle, a

When the egg is not fertilized, the uterine lining is shed and the menstrual flow begins. To help release the lining, the uterine muscles contract under the influence of hormone-like substances called prostaglandins. It is believed that elevated levels of prostaglandin increase uterine muscle tone and contraction strength leading to decreased blood flow and oxygenation of the uterus causing cramping pain.

The diagnosis of primary dysmenorrhea is made by taking a medical history and performing a physical examination including an internal pelvic exam to rule out other causes. Primary dysmenorrhea must be differentiated from secondary dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The pain associated with PMS is generally related to breast tenderness and abdominal bloating. It occurs before the menstrual period begins and ends shortly after menstrual flow starts. Secondary dysmenorrhea is painful menstrual cramping caused by some type of pelvic pathology. These include growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus (endometriosis), benign fibrous tissue growths in the uterus (fibroids), fallopian tube inflammation, ovarian cysts, intrauterine devices (IUDs), inflammatory bowel disease, cancerous tumors, pelvic inflammatory disease or formation of abdominal scar tissue or adhesions. Imaging studies such as CT scan and MRI or surgical visualization procedures such as laparoscopy or hysteroscopy may help to distinguish some of these causes.

Traditional medical treatment is aimed at inhibiting the formation and release of prostaglandins. Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen and mefenamic acid are the mainstay of treatment and are successful in over 65% of cases. If NSAIDs are ineffective, a low dose oral contraceptive is used to suppress ovulation and decrease menstrual fluid volume. Combination therapy of NSAIDs and contraceptives is effective in approximately 90% of people. Extreme cases respond to laparoscopic surgical interruption of the uterosacral nerves carrying sensation and motor function to the uterus.

For those seeking more natural methods and the remaining 10% who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t respond to drug treatment, there are a number of alternative approaches. Successful treatments include osteopathic manipulation, acupuncture, homeopathy, massage, yoga, meditation, application of a TENS unit, omega-3 fatty acids, transdermal nitroglycerin, thiamine (vitamin B1 at 100 mg daily), and magnesium supplements (400 mg daily). Primary dysmenorrhea can also be diminished by getting plenty of rest, eating a low-fat or vegetarian diet, exercising, soaking in a hot bath and using a heating pad on your abdomen.

A Chinese Medicine Perspective Primary dysmenorrhea is addressed in Chinese medicine by considering three functions. Spleen governs the production of Blood and the transformation of food into Qi. Kidney is responsible for the governing of the ovaries including the formation of the eggs. Kidney function predominates from the onset of the period until the next ovulation.
