Mile Bluff improves access to care by expanding medical staff

by Katie Nuttall As an organization that is committed to providing compassionate and progressive care, Mile Bluff is pleased to announce the addition of four medical providers to the healthcare team. These individuals will not only work to meet the medical needs of the community, but several of them will be establishing new programs at Mile Bluff.

Hospitalist program comes to Mauston Patients in Mile Bluff’s acute care (hospital) setting, will now have the opportunity to be cared for by hospitalists, a team of healthcare providers specialized in inpatient care. Hospitalists work in partnership with primary care providers to meet the medical needs of patients while they are in the hospital. While oftentimes primary care providers in the clinic focus on prevention of illness, a hospitalist’s focus is to provide treatment for a current illness.

Hospitalists provide leadership - while collaborating with nurses, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, and other support staff members - to determine the best course of treatment for patients.

Studies show that hospitalists can positively impact a patient’s length of stay and can improve patient satisfaction. At Mile Bluff, the program is expected to enhance the high-quality care that is already provided to patients in the acute care setting.

Mile Bluff establishes this new program with the addition of two experienced providers, Drs. Kabir Ahmed and Ingrid Berg.

been around for many years,” he explains. “As a hospitalist, I will focus only on the patients that are hospitalized, and will be making sure they are well taken care of.”

As with all healthcare providers, Dr. Ahmed’s mission is to help patients feel better. “As a provider, I listen to the needs of my patients and give my entire attention to their care,” says Dr. Ahmed. “My focus will be on patients as individuals. They all have unique personalities and I’m looking forward to getting to know them.”

While Mile Bluff has a ‘small town hospital’ feel that appeals to Dr. Ahmed, he is pleased that the medical center offers a wide variety of specialized services that help to keep care local.

Coming from the suburbs of Chicago, Dr. Ahmed is looking forward to the quiet lifestyle that the Mauston area can provide.

Hospital Medicine: Ingrid Berg, DO As a provider who is well versed in caring for patients of all ages, Ingrid Berg, DO is eager to join the Mile Bluff team.

When she begins providing care in September, Dr. Berg will treat patients who require admission to the hospital. Along with Dr. Ahmed, Dr. Berg will also provide care to patients who come to the emergency room, are admitted to the hospital, and do not have a healthcare provider of their own.

Doctor Berg is looking forward to working with patients and their families at Mile Bluff. “Medicine is one of the many ‘helping’ professions,” she explains. “What attracted me to this field is the opportunity to be present for patients and families during difficult times, to help translate the overwhelming language of illness, and to make sure that their encounters are filled with compassion.

“I simply enjoy people, and in medicine you work with people from all walks of life all day long. The work is so varied and interesting.

I appreciate the intellectual challenge!”

While working as a full-spectrum healthcare provider in southwest Wisconsin, Dr. Berg was surprised by how much she enjoyed the hospital setting. “In medical school, I had envisioned more of a clinic-based career,” she recalls. “As a hospitalist, I like being part of a hospital team, and it is very rewarding to see sick patients return home.”

As she helps to establish the hospitalist program at Mile Bluff, Dr. Berg is eager to help patients understand her role at the medical center. “One of the benefits of having hospital-based providers is that we are not running back and forth from the clinic to the hospital to provide care,” explains Dr. Berg.

“It is easier to coordinate care and meet with families when a provider is ‘in-house’ all day.”

primary care providers,” continues Dr. Berg. “While working with a hospitalist, primary care providers have greater availability for their patients in the clinic setting. The providers don’t have to ‘close their clinic’ to go see patients in the hospital. The goal of this division of labor is also to restore the work/life balance for all healthcare providers.”

In addition to her partnership with primary care providers, Dr. Berg also sees patients as important members of the healthcare team. “I try to empower patients with information, so they can make decisions,” explains Dr. Berg. “My philosophy of care is to work very hard on behalf of patients, and to seek out additional expertise when needed.”

While Dr. Berg may be new to the Mile Bluff organization, she is already quite familiar with Mauston and the surrounding community.

For the last 10 years, she and her family have been visiting the area.

The group enjoys horseback riding and spending time outdoors, and they are looking forward to settling into Mauston.

This desire to care for others began early for Dr. Myers. “I decided to become a physician at a very young age. As I went through medical training, I realized that caring for patients was really my passion,” he recalls. “More importantly, I really enjoy getting to know families and patients. Building relationships with them not only helps me treat patients for what is going on today, but also helps me to know what happened in their past and what their health expectations are for the future. This allows me to put together a treatment plan to keep my patients healthy.”

In addition to getting to know his patients, Dr. Myers works with patients as a part of the healthcare team. “As a doctor I have some expertise, but I don’t know people’s lives and what their preferences are,” he explains. “It is my job to give them the information they need, but ultimately it’s a team effort between the patient and I when it comes to deciding what the best course of Family Medicine: Bryan Myers, MD treatment is. While it has been difficult to leave his patients at his previous practice, Dr. Myers is looking forward to joining the Mile Bluff team in Lake Delton. “I’ve been very interested in coming to Mile Bluff, specifically Delton Family Medical Center, for several years,” he says.

“I’m was born and raised in Wisconsin, and with my family in the area, I have a strong desire to continue to provide care in rural Wisconsin.

More importantly, I like the setting of the Delton facility, where patients get to know their providers closely.”

In his spare time, Dr. Myers enjoys being with his wife and three young children. As a family, they enjoy spending time outdoors.

Along with his wife, Dr. Myers has also established a mission program in Jamaica to provide sustainable agricultural projects in orphanages.

Our organization exists to provide you with care at its best, and our continued expansion of providers, services, and insurance coverage allow us to ensure that we’ll be there for you when you need us most.

We have a strong history of bringing exceptional medical providers to the area. We work hard to get the most qualified individuals to join our team, and to integrate them into the organization and community so that they stay here to serve you for years - and often decades.

With the recent additions to our medical staff, we’ll now be able to provide you with even better access to primary care and podiatry services. In addition, we’ve enhanced our emergency room team, and have added a completely new hospitalist program to serve our inpatients. In other provider news, I’m also pleased to share that our own Dr. Ann Hoffmann was chosen to receive the Max Fox Preceptorship Award. This honor is set aside for the best of the best when it comes to doctors who impact the lives of up-and-coming physicians.

Doctor Ann specifically works with medical students as they complete training here at Mile Bluff. In this role, over the years she has served as a mentor to dozens of physicians who have gone on to care for patients across the nation. Doctor Ann’s impact is far-reaching, and we’re honored to have her on our team, serving you.

Speaking of our team, I once again cannot say enough about the amazing dedication of the people I work with. Longevity in the workplace is not something that you find all that often...unless you’re at Mile Bluff, that is.

Each year we hold a banquet to thank staff members who have reached milestone years of service.

At this year’s employee banquet, I got to recognize nearly 90 individuals with a combined total of 1,300 years of service. Even better yet, is that nine of those employees have given between 30 and 45 years of their lives to you through their work at Mile Bluff. I am humbled by the selflessness I see here every day in employees like these, and am proud to say that I’m a part of this team.

One last individual I would like to mention to you is the newest member of Mile Bluff’s executive staff, Raymond Weiss. Raymond joined us in July as the vice president over our nursing and rehabilitation centers and our senior apartment complex.

Raymond brings with him experience in post-acute care, and we are eager to see the impact his leadership will have on the services we provide.

You will hear more about, and from, Raymond as he settles into his new role.

Lastly, if you haven’t already heard, prescription dispensing services are now available in our Necedah Family Medical Center.

We are pleased to be able to offer the Necedah community this convenience, and look forward to serving even more people in the area.

In closing, I want to wish you all a safe and happy end to your summer. Although we may not want to admit it, school will soon be back in session, the leaves will be changing, and we’ll be hit with the ‘S word’...

Provider team expands Doctor Whitney will join the Mile Bluff team as the medical director of the Emergency Department, and will also provide emergency medicine care. He comes to Mauston with years of experience in family, emergency and trauma medicine care. He has spent time in the United States Army as an active duty physician, and has also served as a healthcare provider in southwestern Wisconsin.

“Coming to Mauston will be a very comfortable transition for me.

Emergency care is something I’ve provided since 2007, and really my entire career,” explains Dr. Whitney. “My experience sets me up nicely to be an ER physician, first and foremost, but also to serve as the medical director of the ER.” In his leadership role, Dr. Whitney will take care of administrative items like scheduling and managing patient concerns.

Doctor Whitney is eager to work with local EMTs and emergency room support networks to ensure that Mile Bluff continues to have a good, robust system that provides care seamlessly to patients.

Doctor Whitney’s strong desire to help people live healthy and happy lives was inspired by his own interactions with healthcare providers at an early age. “When I was in kindergarten, I really connected with our rural family physicians, and I made the decision then to become a doctor,” recalls Dr. Whitney. “I was inspired by what they did and how they cared

for people, not just in the clinic, but also in how they supported the community. Growing up, I was interested in being that type of doctor.

“I really enjoy seeing patients out in the community who are happy and healthy,” continues Dr. Whitney. “It’s so rewarding to help someone become more whole, healthy, and engaged in daily living.”

Ready to provide care in Mauston, Dr. Whitney is looking forward to joining Mile Bluff.

“The biggest thing that drew me here was the sense of team that this organization demonstrated during my interview,” he says.

“It’s a group of people, really focused on improving the health and wellness of the community.

I see a great opportunity to lead and work together as a team here at Mile Bluff.”

In all that he takes on, Dr. Whitney strives to do things well.

“Keeping up with medical knowledge is a priority for me,” he says.

“I want to continue to understand the science that drives my profession so that I can bring that high level of science understanding to the bedside of patients in order to make a difference in their care.”

Doctor Whitney enjoys spending time with his family, as well as participating in extreme sports like snowboarding and mountain biking. For several years he coached youth sports, which he hopes to do in Mauston as well.

With the addition of these providers, as well as the two who came earlier in the summer (pictured below), Mile Bluff’s team is pleased with the continued growth of the medical staff.

Additional pain management option available during childbirth: Nitrous oxide Mile Bluff’s Obstetrics Department is excited to provide an additional pain management option.

Nitrous oxide is now available for laboring mothers.

Nitrous oxide provides a noninvasive, self-administered pain management alternative that is a safe approach to helping relieve labor symptoms. This colorless, odorless, tasteless gas is used to decrease the pain a mother experiences during contractions. It was first used during labor in the 1930s and is currently widely used in Europe.

The nitrous oxide that is used during childbirth is different than the ‘laughing gas’ that is used at the dentist. Nitrous oxide that is used for labor pain is a 50/50 mixture of nitrous gas and oxygen, which is inhaled through a mask. It does not have the same effect as the anesthesia used at the dentist. Instead, it allows laboring mothers to breathe in the gas on their own, right before a contraction begins. This allows the gas to reach its peak effect at about

the same time the contraction reaches its peak.

Nitrous oxide is a safe option to use during delivery, as there are no known effects on the baby. Nitrous is the only pain relief method used for labor that is cleared from the

body through the lungs. As soon as a mother stops breathing the gas, the nitrous effect is gone within a breath or two.

While nitrous oxide is a pain management alternative, laboring mothers can also make the decision

by Angie Wopat, RN, WCC, DWC For the past year, Mile Bluff's podiatry staff members have been utilizing the Xtremity One Foot Scanner to help patients. It is the most advanced optical imaging system available for attaining 2-D and 3-D foot images for manufacturing custom-molded orthotics.

During their appointments, patients will be able to see a 3-D mirror image of their feet in the convenience of the clinic. Those accurate images will then be electronically transmitted for ordering custom-molded orthotics. With this electronic ordering system, patients are expected to receive their new orthotics up to a full week sooner than when using

the plaster casting process of the past. This quicker turn-around is expected to improve healing times and decrease discomfort for patients.

As well as being used for making custom orthotics, the scanner is a vital resource for the treatment of foot ulcers caused by diabetes. The scanner has the ability to take 3-D images of the wound and the wound bed. Patients are able to view these images, and can even take a color print-out of the picture home with them. The images can be taken weekly to help accurately track the progression of healing.

"This technology helps to further improve our patient outcomes," stated Dr. Langen. "I’m pleased to have the Xtremity One Foot Scanner available in Mauston so that I can offer this state-of-the-art technology to our patients."

to have an epidural as well. Some women may use nitrous prior to having an epidural placed. Although they cannot be used together, it is fine to use nitrous first, and then move to an epidural or a different type of pain relief later.

The use of nitrous does allow for laboring mothers to move around.

As long as a mother is steady on her feet, she can be up and moving during labor. The nitrous does not interfere with the natural progression of labor, and does not require continuous monitoring of the baby.

If you are an expecting mother, and are interested in learning more about nitrous oxide as a pain management alternative during labor, you are encouraged to talk to your primary care provider to determine if the option may be right for you.

Ready or not, influenza season is coming - Don’t be caught without a vaccine Believe it or not, influenza season is right around the corner. With this in mind, the healthcare community and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) encourage people to get vaccinated for the virus.

Recognizing influenza...

There is a common misconception that when you are sick to your stomach, you have ‘the flu.’

Although nausea can be a sign, influenza is actually a contagious respiratory virus that develops more quickly than a cold.

Common symptoms: • fever or feeling feverish/chills • cough • sore throat • runny or stuffy nose • muscle or body aches • headaches • fatigue (tiredness) Stop the spread of influenza...

Getting an influenza vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting against the virus. To help stop the spread of influenza and other diseases, the CDC suggests also taking the following actions.

• If you are sick with a flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of feverreducing medicine.

• Practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette to prevent the spread of germs. If you need to sneeze or cough, do so into a tissue or into your upper sleeve or elbow, not in your hands.

• Wash your hands regularly.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

• Clean and disinfect frequentlytouched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.

• If you do come down with influenza, remember that there are antiviral medications that may make your illness more mild, and may help you feel better faster. The medicine needs to be started within 48 hours of when your symptoms first begin, so be sure to act quickly!

The vaccine…

Flu vaccines cannot cause the flu. The viruses found in vaccines are either killed or weakened. Vaccines are safe, and serious problems from the flu vaccine are very rare.

The most common side effect that is reported is soreness at the injection site, which only lasts for a few days.

Even with the vaccine, there is still a chance that you could get sick with influenza. There are several reasons for why this can happen.

It takes about two weeks for the influenza vaccine to take effect.

During that time, or shortly before you received the vaccine, you may have been exposed to an influenza virus. If you were exposed, this could result in you becoming ill with influenza before the vaccine begins to protect you. Also, the vaccination does not protect you from every possible strain of virus that is out there.

You can become sick if you are exposed to an influenza virus that is not included in the seasonal flu vaccine.

The influenza virus changes constantly from year to year, and also can change within the course of one flu season. Before the influenza season arrives each year, experts pick which strains of the virus to include in the next year’s vaccine. Since this is done months in advance, it is not possible to predict which influenza strain will be most active during the upcoming season. It’s possible, then, that the produced vaccine won’t completely protect against all strains of the influenza virus that are circulating during the influenza season.

Unfortunately, there are some cases where people who were vaccinated become infected with an influenza virus that the vaccine was designed to protect against. The protection provided by influenza vaccinations can vary widely, due to each person’s health, age and other factors. In general, the vaccine works best among young, healthy adults and older children.

Influenza vaccination is not a perfect tool, but it is the best one currently available to prevent influenza.

However, if a vaccinated person does come down with influenza, it is likely that he or she will have a less severe case of influenza, thanks to the vaccination.

LSVT BIG & LOUD program helps Mile Bluff patients with Parkinson’s disease The training helps those with Parkinson’s to recognize when their voice is too soft; and it helps them to realize that their seemingly louder voice is really within normal limits.

by Katie Nuttall Parkinson’s disease is a condition that affects a person’s nervous system. As the disease progresses, it leads to movement disorders and can even impact a person’s speech.

For those with Parkinson’s, the ability to maintain movement and speech abilities is very important.

Fortunately, help is available at Mile Bluff through the LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD therapy programs.

LSVT BIG & LOUD therapy LSVT BIG & LOUD are therapy programs provided by physical therapists and speech pathologists to help those living with Parkinson’s. The programs help those with the disease maximize their movements and to vocalize loudly in order to reduce the impact Parkinson’s has on their lives.

BIG is a therapy-based program for Parkinson’s patients looking to increase the ‘bigness’ of their movements. By using a specialized treat-

ment program, a physical therapist works with a patient to make movements bigger, to improve amplitude (turning at the waist/walking), and to increase speed, balance and overall quality of life.

LOUD is a specialized, intensive treatment that focuses on speech.

The program works to rebuild vocal loudness to help individuals with Parkinson’s maintain and/or improve their communication.

LSVT BIG & LOUD at Mile Bluff LSVT BIG & LOUD are intensive therapy programs, but address the issues that can make everyday life more difficult for Parkinson’s patients. Before beginning either treatment, the specific needs of each patient are determined, and a custom therapy progression is designed.

At Mile Bluff, LSVT BIG is provided through the Rehabilitation Services Department. LSVT LOUD is provided through the Speech and Language Pathology Department.

The care providers are certified clinicians.

Connie Prell honored as Mile Bluff’s 2017 Rural Health Ambassador Earlier this year, Connie Prell was presented with the Rural Health Ambassador Award during a reception held in her honor. Connie’s husband, along with many of her colleagues, attended the event to celebrate and show support and appreciation for all that Connie has done to better the community.

Dan Stich, a representative of the Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative, presented the award, saying: “Connie is definitely deserving of this honor. You can see the impact she’s made in the community just by talking with those around her.”

Connie is a registered nurse, and has been a part of the Mile Bluff organization for more than 30 years. Her nomination form stated that: “Whether it is coming in early, staying late, or working on her days off, Connie always puts her patients and co-workers first.”

Connie has touched many lives in the community with her work at Mile Bluff, and through her service at church as a choir director, organist and leader of various events. “I usually don’t like being recognized for the work that I do, but I am truly honored to be named this year’s

Rural Health Ambassador,” said Connie. “I love caring for those in our community, and I enjoy working with the staff at Mile Bluff.”

The ambassador award was established in 2004 to recognize healthcare employees who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in promoting their respective organizations, while making significant

contributions to rural health. Each recipient demonstrates a history of fostering positive communication and relations within the hospital’s respective service area by: serving on community boards/service organizations, taking advantage of volunteer or public speaking opportunities, and supporting community health activities beyond the scope of the hospital.

Employees recognized for milestone years of service during awards banquet Mile Bluff Medical Center is committed to providing compassionate and progressive care, improving the health and wellness of the community, and going beyond expectations in healthcare today and always. It takes a dedicated team of employees to help Mile Bluff carry out this mission, and nearly 90 of those individuals were honored at a recent employee awards banquet.

Team members were recognized for reaching milestone years of service - from five, all the way up to 45 years with the organization. In total, over 1,300 years of service were recognized at the banquet!

Mile Bluff’s President/CEO James O’Keefe addressed the crowd, saying, “I am honored to be a part of this team with you. I appreciate everything that you do for Mile Bluff, and for the people who live in our community.” He added, “I thank you for the lasting impact you are making on this organization and the well-being of the community.”

O’Keefe went on to say, “You don’t often see people staying in one place for more than a few years anymore, so the fact that Mile Bluff continually has employees with this type of longevity is amazing.” He added, “Personally, I have loved every minute of my time here at Mile Bluff. We aim to create an environment that makes employees want to stay; and I am proud to say that’s what we continue to do.”

Larry Willer, chairman of Mile Bluff’s Board of Directors, also took a few moments to address the

crowd. He expressed his appreciation for being able to see the faces of the employees who make a positive difference for patients every day.

Willer stated, “On behalf of the Board, I want to thank you for what you do. We volunteer our time on the Board because we know that what you provide to the community through your work at Mile Bluff is that important.”

attendees had a delicious meal, followed by the awards presentation.

Those being recognized for five through 15 years of service were given pins. All employees being recognized for 20 or more years of service received gifts they had chosen in advance from a catalog.

Some of those things included items such as an electric fireplace, ring, bracelet, crystal, cookware, vacuum, pressure washer, fire pit, HDTV, headphones, flatware, etc.

Mile Bluff exists to provide care at its best. To do this, the organization makes an effort to hire and retain qualified, compassionate and caring employees. Annually, a night is set aside to recognize some of these individuals who have been improving the health of their community for years. Recently, Dr. Ann Hoffmann received the Max Fox Preceptorship Award from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health and the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association. The honor is awarded to physicians who have gone above and beyond in helping to develop and teach future medical providers.

Mile Bluff is extremely active when it comes to teaching, providing healthcare students with a diverse rural environment to learn in. The organization is privileged to have Dr. Ann Hoffmann serve as the coordinator for its medical student preceptorship program. Her award is well deserved!

4th Annual Autumn Scamper 5k set to return to Necedah September 30 As the fall activity calendar fills up, be sure to plan on joining the staff of the Necedah Family Medical Center for the 4th Annual Autumn Scamper 5k on Saturday, September 30.

The fun begins at 9 am with a free half-mile kids’ run/walk for children up to age 12. The 5k will start at 9:30 am. Refreshments will be provided for all participants, and everyone will have the chance to win great door prizes!

No matter your age or fitness level, you are invited to join in on the fun. All adults and children must be registered. Pre-registration is preferred, however you can sign up on-site the morning of the event.

The fee for the 5k is $15 if registered by September 12, and $20 September 13 through the day of the event. There is no cost for the half-mile kids’ event, however children’s shirts can be purchased for $5 each. Please note that only those who are registered by September 12 are guaranteed an event T-shirt. A limited number of extra shirts may be available after the early-bird

deadline, and will be distributed on a first-come basis. All participants are also asked to bring a donation of non-perishable food to benefit the local pantry.

The Autumn Scamper event starts and ends at the Necedah schools. All proceeds will go to the Necedah School District to help purchase a healthy options vending machine.

Be sure to join the staff of the Necedah Family Medical Center on Saturday, September 30 for the annual run/walk. The event will be held rain or shine. Mark the date in your calendars and make plans to hit the streets to promote health and wellness, and to support the Necedah community.

Grief support available at Mile Bluff If you are having a difficult time dealing with the passing of a loved one, Mile Bluff offers hope though its grief support network.

The group meets at the medical center every other Thursday at 7 pm, from September 21 to December 14. The topics of guilt, loneliness, decision making, dealing with death, gender issues, and how to handle holidays are discussed. There is also time set aside during the sessions to address any individual issues you may be dealing with.

The group is led by Reverend Jeffrey Fairchild. He is expe-

rienced in counseling and crisis intervention as the Director of Pastoral Care at Mile Bluff. He holds a master’s degree in pastoral counseling, and is a member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. He has specific training to work with those who are dealing with grief issues, as well as those who are depressed or dealing with marriage or family issues.

10th Annual Women’s Night Out is Oct. 5 Area women are invited to gather up their friends for an evening of fun at Juneau County’s 10th Annual Women’s Night Out, Thursday, October 5.

Join the Juneau County Women’s Health Initiative to celebrate friendship, discover how to support those around you, and - most importantly - find a way to balance the demands of life to improve your mental and physical health.

Starting at 4 pm, area women are invited to enjoy refreshments, visit health and wellness exhibits, participate in raffles, take part in interactive sessions, and check out what area vendors have to offer.

In celebration of the tenth anniversary of this event, there will be two featured speakers! To start the evening, Suzy Favor Hamilton, a local Wisconsin girl turned Olympic runner, will share her story during a moderated Q & A session. As a mental health advocate, Suzy will share her journey of living a life with mental illness.

After Suzy’s session, raffle winners will be announced, and the crowd will welcome keynote speaker Amy Dee as she presents Don’t Believe Everything You Think.

According to Amy, “This presentation reminds women of their power to stop and take a breath so they can respond rather than simply react.” Those who attend Women’s Night Out will discover how thoughts create emotions, and why it’s dangerous for women to believe everything they think.

Drawing from her experience as a nurse in the mental health field, Amy will explore the behavioral science behind anxiety, anger and fear. The audience will laugh while learning how to trade this constant reactivity for a positive and empowering way of interacting with the world. Amy will encourage women by helping them find ways to make those all-important human connections that keep them happier at home and at work.

The cost of pursuing higher education can be enough to derail a person’s goal of achieving a new degree or certification. However, with the assistance of Mile Bluff Medical Center Foundation and the Carol Purvis Education Fund, the burden of higher education costs is a little lighter for Mile Bluff employees and students.

Through this fund, the foundation provides Mile Bluff employees with an opportunity to apply for scholarships. The program was designed to provide incentives and encouragement for students, adult learners and professionals, to consider - or advance - a career in healthcare.

Kari Lalk, a receptionist in Mile Bluff’s Rehabilitation Services Department, recently received a scholarship from the foundation.

Kari is currently attending Western Technical College to become a registered nurse.

“I wanted to pursue this degree because it is something I have wanted to do for a long time,” explains Kari. “I have three kids, and my daughter, Alyssa, is also going to nursing school. She convinced me to go with her to pursue my dream.

It has been really fun and inspiring going to school with her.”

Kari has been an employee of Mile Bluff since 1999. She feels that the medical center is a great place to work, and she is excited to further help the community as a nurse.

“When I applied for the scholarship, I knew there were many ap-

plicants,” says Kari. “I had no idea that they would choose me to receive one of the scholarships. It will help so much with tuition and the cost of books.”

“When Martha [foundation’s executive director] told me that I received a scholarship, I was kind of speechless. I am so appreciative to our hospital and the foundation for the great things they do to help students pursue their careers. I am also very grateful for my rehab team members, and all of their support in working around my crazy schedule.”

Stan Macheichok: Proud to be part of the Mile Bluff Medical Center team Since 1985, Stan Macheichok has been a member of the Mile Bluff team. Initially working as a lab tech, Stan now serves as the Director of Laboratory Services, a position he has held since 1995.

When Stan first graduated as a medical technologist, the job market was flooded. There were very few openings out there. Luckily Mile Bluff had a spot for Stan, and it’s been his ‘work home’ ever since.

After working at Mile Bluff for over 30 years, Stan can say that he still enjoys his job. “I’m comfortable here and I like what I do. I think Mile Bluff’s independence plays a big part in that,” says Stan. “In a bigger system, small hospitals can be made to fit a ‘cookie cutter’ model.

Here, it’s not that way at all.”

Stan continues, “I think the work we put out is first-rate. For a lab our size, we have amazing results and technology. As an independent organization, Mile Bluff has the ability to choose what kind of testing we provide. I think if we were part of a bigger system, we would be told what kind of testing we can offer we would probably be required to refer our lab testing to bigger facilities, which would delay results for our patients.”

Since Stan started at Mile Bluff, he has witnessed the growth the organization has undergone. “We began as such a small hospital, and now we’ve really expanded the services we provide throughout the organization,” recalls Stan. “Even to have labs in all four of our outreach clinics

shows how much we’ve grown. We are doing so much work and serving so many more people.”

Always looking for ways to provide state-of-the-art healthcare services, Mile Bluff has expanded the technology available in the medical center’s lab. “New lab technology has allowed us to expand the testing we do here,” says Stan. “I like seeing the new technology I’ve read about in lab journals being installed at Mile Bluff. We’re always looking for the ‘next thing’ to help us improve and expand the care we provide.”

While Stan has appreciated the growth of the Mile Bluff lab under his leadership, it’s ultimately the people that have kept Stan at the medical center for all these years.

One-pan Italian Chicken & Vegetables - serves 6 Main ingredients: 2 large carrots, peeled and thinly sliced (about 2 cups) 2 red potatoes, washed and chopped (about 2 cups) 1 medium zucchini, halved and thick-sliced (about 2-1/3 cups) 2 red peppers, chopped (about 2 cups) 1 head broccoli, coarsely chopped (about 1-1/2 cups) 1 pound chicken breast (about 3 medium chicken breasts) Seasoning ingredients: 1/2 Tablespoon each: dried basil dried oregano dried parsley garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon each: onion powder dried thyme 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes 4-1/2 Tablespoons olive oil Optional ingredients: 1/3 cup fresh, grated parmesan Fresh parsley, chopped Salt Pepper Cooked rice or quinoa Preparation: • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. • Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper or foil; set aside.

• In a small bowl combine all of the seasoning ingredients.

• Coat chicken with a portion of the seasoning mixture.

• Bake chicken on sheet pan for 8 minutes.

• Remove from oven; cube chicken and return to pan.

• In a large bowl, coat vegetables with remaining seasoning mixture.

• Add vegetables to the pan with the chicken.

• Bake for 8 minutes.

• Remove from oven and toss items on pan.

• Bake an additional 10 to 20 minutes (until vegetables are tender crisp and chicken reaches internal temperature of at least 165 degrees F).

• Remove and top, if desired, with cheese and parsley.

• Serve with rice or quinoa to feed the entire family.

Limited time doesn’t mean that you have to limit your healthy food choices

by Laura Covelli, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist The summer months have flown by, and the school year is right around the corner. Adjusting to the fall routine can be a challenge, especially when planning meals around your family’s various activities. You may find yourself having trouble answering the ‘simple’ question: “What’s for dinner tonight?”

Dinner? Who has time to plan meals ahead of time? If this sounds familiar to you, you will want to check out some of the tips and resources below.

Frozen time-savers Don’t have time to chop those veggies? Opt for frozen instead!

You don’t have to wait for vegetables to be in season before you get them at a good price. You can find lowerpriced vegetables in the frozen aisle; and you save yourself the work of having to wash, cut and prepare everything. Next time you’re at the grocery store, take a look at the variety of pre-chopped vegetables that are available to include in your next dinner recipe.

Skillet meals Ready to cut back on the work that comes after dinner? Find some great skillet recipes. You cook your meat, add the grains, and sauté the vegetables, all in one pan. You can make a complete meal without creating a sink full of dishes!

Crock pot meats Perhaps you’ve been there before. You plan a nice meal, pick out all the ingredients, and then realize a little too late that you forgot to take the dinner meat out of the freezer.

Avoid the frustration of a meal plan

gone wrong, by using crock pots to cook your meats ahead of time. For example, place chicken breasts in a crock pot on high for about four hours, or on low for up to eight hours. For more moisture, pour broth, olive oil, dressing or marinade over the meat. By the time you come home, your chicken will be cooked and ready for dicing or shredding.

If you do find yourself in a situation where you forgot to thaw your dinner meat in advance, and you have a pressure cooker, you can use that to cook frozen meats in as little as one hour.

Sheet pan meals Sheet pans are a great way to incorporate numerous ingredients in one location for an entire meal!

This is also a great way to use garden produce or take advantage of cheaper frozen and fresh produce at your local grocery store or farmer’s market.

Seasonal produce The following produce items will be plentiful in August and September.

• beans • beets • cabbage • carrots • cauliflower • corn • cucumbers • kale • onions • bell peppers • potatoes • tomatoes • summer squash • eggplant Remember, each great meal provides even better leftovers. Make a little extra to eat throughout the week, or to freeze for later!

This spring, individuals had the opportunity to learn about tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and the latest advancements in hearing aid technology. A free informational event was held at Crest View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in New Lisbon.

Signia Education Specialist Leanne Powers, AuD, was the guest speaker for the day. She answered questions about tinnitus and explained how hearing aids can help those living with ringing in the ears.

Although there is no cure for tinnitus, the latest advancements in hearing aid technology can help reduce the ringing so it has less of an impact on an individual’s life.

Notch therapy is one of the new methods being used to help those with tonal tinnitus. Doctor Powers demonstrated how the process works to reduce the intensity of the ringing.

Mile Bluff’s audiology team was on-hand to answer questions after the event, and to talk about the help that is available locally. Everyone in attendance also had the opportunity to sign up for a free hearing evaluation.

For the third year, Mile Bluff was the only medical center to participate in the National Guard’s annual disaster readiness exercise. In July, PATRIOTNorth17 provided the opportunity for civilian and military agencies to work together to test their response to large-scale emergency situations.

Throughout PATRIOT, the Mile Bluff team was able to demonstrate it’s response to four scenarios, including a mass casualty situation, a simulated evacuation, a power failure

and the need for pharmacy recovery protocol.

More than 900 individuals from over 30 states were involved in this year’s exercise. It gave participants the chance to practice and improve their response skills in a real-life setting.

Natural disasters and large-scale emergencies are things we all hope to avoid. If the unfortunate does happen in this community, you can rest assured that you’re in good hands with the Mile Bluff team.
