Record Day for Mosley Meet

T

he Humble ISD’s Sam Mosley Track and Field Meet may never see a day like the one experienced las Saturday at Turner Stadium. Just looking at the stats doesn’t tell the whole story. Not only did Kingwood senior Greg Lupton rise over the pole vaulting bar with a Mosley record 16 feet measurement, he also won the Boys event with a mark of 16 feet six inches. That mark enabled last year’s 5A UIL fourth place finisher to win the competition in Humble. Second placer Reece Watson of Spring also jumped 16-6, but he lost the tie-breaker to Lupton. Both Watson, and Lupton set the Turner Stadium record, as well. The day of overcast, cold, and damp, rainy weather also saw KPark’s Shawn Barber break the Mosley standard with a 16 feet vault. He finished third. However, the record setting numbers Saturday weren’t the only first-time occurrences found at the Mosley. The very first Steeplechase races--featuring a water obstacle, and several wall-like hurdle impediments---were held at an Humble ISD meet. It was also the first time in front of the public that the stadium track’s fairly unique feature of a sliding door unveiling a water holding area--what is jumped over--that actually automatically fills with the fluid, was on display.
