appy New Year! Milan welcomes 2017 with a huge amount of energy, proud of the rankings that have established it as an increasingly popular destination. In 2016 there were 7.7 million visitors and 40,000 international students who chose it as a place to study. People continue to travel to Milan on business and also love shopping here, especially in January when, thanks to the sales and promotions offered by all types of brands, countless bargains can be bagged. But, as noted by the two celebrities who were interviewed by Milan Luxury, and who hail from totally different fields, these are not the only things that Milan has to offer. The first super star is Oscar Farinetti, an entrepreneur known throughout the world as the founder of Eataly, the chain of shops that brought high-quality Italian food to New York, Dubai, Tokyo, Istanbul, Chicago and Seoul. Farinetti compares Milan to a ‘reserved grand dame’ who reveals her treasures to those who know how to look for them. And, where ‘looking’ is concerned, a perfect example is the second celebrity interviewed in this issue, photo reporter Steve McCurry. He is a frequent visitor to Milan, and a few years ago, he even received the coveted Ambrogino d’Oro award, a prize usually reserved for Milanese notables. The things that he admires most about Milan are its deeply rooted culture and the support shown by its people, as well as other enjoyable aspects, including its food and fashion, because “Italian style is unequalled, and there’s no other place where you can find a tuxedo that fits to perfection.” To discover the latest fashion trends and impeccable Milanese style, to always be updated about the new openings of exclusive boutiques and restaurants, to have the right advice about luxury shopping. Milan Luxury offers an overview of the city seen through the eyes of experts in the field – with secret shopping addresses, the hottest, most elite restaurants and the locals’ best loved corners. It presents an hourglass of time, offering up-to-the minute suggestions about what to do in Milan in just a few hours, what to visit without wasting time and how to avoid tourist clichés, providing readers instead with first-hand insider information about curiosities and ‘off-the-beaten track’ attractions.

INTERVIEW | OSCAR FARINETTI

Farinetti was not born in the bustle of the city but in the peaceful rural surroundings of the hills between the Langhe and Roero in Piedmont. However, he lived in Milan during the Expo period, when the city was a work in progress and really enjoyed it because ‘embracing the future’ is something that comes naturally to him. His efforts paid off because the most important project that he developed in the city became a point of reference for the Milanese.

scar Farinetti |Interview by Elena Binda

S

everal signs of destiny mark Oscar Farinetti’s history. To begin with, he was born in Alba, renowned throughout the world for its prestigious white truffles. He was born in 1954, during the period known, in Italy, as the boom years. His father was a partisan, one of the many young and not so young, Italian men and women who opposed the Fascist regime during the Second World War, giving rise to that heroic period known as the Resistance. Gastronomic excellence is as much a part of his DNA as is optimism and courage. But it is, in fact, his bibliography that unequivocally highlights the many contradictions that characterize the man. Books written about him include ‘Il mercante di Utopie’’, ‘Vino I Love you, ‘Lezioni di cittadinanza and ‘Coccodè’. Part peasant and part philosopher, part instigator and part merchant, Farinetti is known throughout the world as the founder of Eataly, the chain of shops that brought high-quality Italian food to New York, Dubai, Tokyo, Istanbul, Chicago and Seoul.

12

AGEING WELL, LIKE WINE Last year, 62-year-old Oscar Farinetti, the founder of Eataly, handed over the reins of the company to his sons and returned to live in Piedmont, a region renowned for its wine and hazelnuts. “After 10 years in the company, it was only right that I should leave,” he says. “I now travel around, chatting about Eataly, while my sons continue to run the business, and they’re really good at what they do.”

INTERVIEW | OSCAR FARINETTI

He is a strong supporter of his native Piedmont, a region renowned for its wines and hazelnuts, and of Italy in general, and for years has championed concepts that have gradually become a part of public consciousness. These include making high-quality Italian food available to everyone, protecting biodiversity and adopting healthy eating habits that are fundamental to a quality lifestyle. He enjoys talking about miracles (“Although Italy has been in a decline for seventeen centuries it has somehow managed to achieve the Renaissance, the Risorgimento and the Economic Miracle”) and, don’t forget terroir (“strawberries should be eaten during the strawberry season because when they are freshly harvested all of their nutritional values remain intact and they are less expensive”). Ever the optimist, he arrived in Milan shortly before the opening of Expo. Despite polemics, delays, scandals and riots, he saw it as a one-of-a-kind opportunity. He opened his sales point in a former theatre, and then proceeded to fall in love with the city and its inhabitants. What is unmissable about Milan? Milan is a treasure trove of marvellous places brimming over with history. There are cloisters, libraries, gardens and frescoes, including the unexpected Tiepolo, hidden from view behind a tiny entrance that decorates Palazzo Clerici, or San Fedele, where Manzoni prayed every day and on whose steps he slipped and banged his head, resulting in a trauma that led to his death. And, then again, there is Casa degli Atellani

14

where Leonardo meditated, or Palazzo Marino, now the seat of the Town Hall, where Marianna de Leyva y Marino, better known as the Nun of Monza, was born in the 17th century. Hidden treasures, encountered every day by passersby, who are in such a hurry that they don’t even notice them. However, one absolute must-see is the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci housed in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. While on the subject, I would also definitely suggest a visit to the recently revamped Pinacoteca di Brera. Where does the true beauty of this city lie? Milan is so fast-paced, there’s never enough time. This lack of time, combined with the tumult, comprises its inner soul. Those who manage to see beneath its veneer, find it seductive. However, the most beautiful thing about Milan are the Milanese: a wonderful people. On the other hand, is there anything that is highly overrated, something that you would advise against? No! There are several places in Milan that are underrated and need to be re-evaluated. One such example is the Parco Agricolo Sud. You’re not Milanese: in your opinion what impression does the city make on visitors? Does this impression change when you work and live here? Milan is a discreet, reserved grande dame, the jealous keeper

NOT ONLY BREAD‌ Eataly Milano is housed in the theatre space of Milan’s former Teatro Smeraldo, a cultural hub of the Milanese entertainment scene from 1942 to 2012. As a tribute to the history of the theatre, the store, opened by Farinetti in Piazza XXV Aprile, has a stage which hosts a daily line-up of concerts, readings and performances. INTERVIEW | OSCAR FARINETTI

of priceless treasures. While living here, I discovered her marvelous, unexpected playfulness, hidden behind her austere, severe façade. There’s a great feeling of trust in Milan. Michele De Lucchi, one of the architects who contributed to designing the new face of the city, maintains that the city ”has difficulty in perceiving itself as a city of art, because it isn’t eager to embrace its past, preferring instead to look towards the future and its beauty lies in what can’t yet be seen.” Do you agree? Yes, I do. Expo’s intangible heritage is clearly detectable in the city. You can actually feel its dynamism and a renewed desire to create. I tend to be forgetful [of the past]. The only thing that I remember is the future. This is probably why Milan appeals to me. Eataly was launched in Milan in 2014, a year prior to Expo. Why did you choose this particular time? Milan was getting ready to host Expo and more than ever before, you could actually perceive the vitality of a city that was not prepared to succumb to the crisis. A city that was ready to reinvent itself by showing all of its allure. Milan attracted investments. It created jobs. Eataly Smeraldo is one of the many pieces of a puzzle the city used to highlight its points of excellence – food, Made in Italy and Italian style. We restored the old Smeraldo Theatre and Piazza XXV Aprile, overwhelmed for years by endless construction, to their former glory. And now? Now, that the frenzy has passed, in your opinion, how is the city faring? Milan is focused on the future. Its regeneration could transform it into a green capital, with an eye to achieving a sustainable, circular economy. You came to the city with a project and a philosophy: what did you give and what did you receive? We restored to life a place of entertainment that had been shut down while continuing, I believe, to focus on the city’s cultural heritage. We gained a lot because the Milanese flocked here, and continue to flock here in droves. Eataly Milano has become a place of research and innovation. Claudio Liu, the owner of Iyo, the first starred Japanese restaurant in Milan, defined his cuisine, a mixture of fusion and sushi, as “new Milanese cuisine”. Do you consider this a provocation or not? One of the best aspects of Milan is that there’s room for everyone. There always has been. The city boasts an extremely rich wine and food scene, characterized by high-quality products and a vast range of offerings in terms of variety.

16

Milan is a city that has embraced the international food and wine scene while retaining its own identity and culinary traditions. Risotto and ‘cotolette’ (breaded veal cutlets) continue to remain the timeless staples of its cuisine, but there’s lots more. I agree with the great Liu. Finally, can you name a few of your favourite places in Milan? There are many. But you know what will happen? If I forget one of them I might make a faux pas. Let’s just say that when I want to relax, I either go to the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana or to Brera, which I can access on foot from Eataly, to see Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus. I then head to Piazza Duomo where I stop to admire the first statue on the top, right-hand side of the Duomo. It’s San Agricola, Eataly’s mascot.

Natale Farinetti, known as Oscar, is a highly successful entrepreneur. He was born in Piedmont, and his father, Paolo, a former partisan, transmitted the values of the Resistance to him. After dropping out of the economics program at the University of Turin, he was later honoured with several honorary degrees for his entrepreneurial projects. He inherited Unieuro, a small appliances company, from his father, transforming it, in the Eighties, into Italy’s largest electronics retailer. After selling it in 2003, he used the profits from this sale to finance his next project, Eataly, a new distribution chain vending solely Italian high-quality specialty products. He has been married to Graziella Defilè since 1978. In 2015, he handed over the business to their three sons, Francesco, Nicola and Andrea.

OSCAR FARINETTI | MY MILANO

Between art and agriculture Farinetti’s favourite places in Milan are associated with its age-old history: on the one hand architecture and art, and, on the other, agricultural tradition. These are the roots from which the city draws inspiration for the future: possibly re-imagining itself as a green capital.

SAN AGRICOLA “Agricola” in Latin means ‘farmer’. It therefore comes as no surprise that out of all the marble statues that decorate the Duomo, the statue of this saint, whose name is associated with the land, is Oscar Farinetti’s favourite. As part of the initiative ‘Adopt a Spire’, launched to support the preservation and restoration of the cathedral, Eataly has symbolically chosen spire G1, dedicated to Agricola. “We really liked the story of this saint”, explains Farinetti. “Agricola and his slave were martyred in the 4th century, conveying a message of equality that transcends the centuries”. The Duomo is decorated with 135 spires and 3,400 statues. Each year, their upkeep requires one-hundred-and-ten hours of maintenance.

MY MILANO | OSCAR FARINETTI

CHURCH OF SAN FEDELE Located in piazza San Fedele between the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and Palazzo Marino, the Catholic church of San Fedele dates back to the 16th century and is considered the most emblematic Italian example of Counter-reformation architecture. Commissioned by Cardinal Carlo Borromeo and designed by the architect and artist Pellegrino Tibaldi, it was the favourite church of the deeply religious Alessandro Manzoni, one of the most celebrated Italian authors of all times.

PARCO AGRICOLO SUD Parco Agricolo Sud is a large protected area located south and south-east of Milan. It was established in 1990 with the purpose of preserving the countryside around Milan and safeguarding the area’s agricultural economy. Not only a vast green lung used for recreational purposes but also a place of incomparable beauty, history and culture. Hallmark features of the Park include meadows, canals, fields of grain and sunflowers, but also three marvelous abbeys, including the Abbey of Chiaravalle.

THE SUPPER AT EMMAUS This is an oil painting on canvas executed in 1606 by Caravaggio. It depicts an episode from the Gospel of St. Luke when the resurrected but incognito Jesus reveals himself to two wayfarers on the road to Emmaus. After listening to him at length, the two men only recognize him when he breaks bread and shares his food with them. The painting is one of the masterpieces housed in the Pinacoteca di Brera which is currently being revamped under the masterful direction of Canadian museum director James Bradburne.

Behind the scenes

In the year 2000, the renovations masterminded by Mario Botta transformed Milan’s 18th century Teatro alla Scala into a technologically avant-garde masterpiece. The new ‘scenic tower’, standing at a height of 56m, 18 of which are below ground, houses stage machinery capable of handling the most complex and spectacular stage sets, even when the curtain is up. The most advanced prototype in the world.

Marble spectaculars

Among the statues and decorations of the Duomo of Milan, under the watchful gaze of the Madonnina, one would expect to only see portrayals of biblical figures, saints, demons and garlands‌ but here, this rule does not apply: amidst the 3,400 statues etched in marble there are also a number of famous Italian personages including the poet Dante, renowned composer and conductor Arturo Toscanini and King Vittorio Emanuele, but also two boxers (in honour of Italian champion Primo Carnera) and a semi-nude woman lying between one spire and another. Keep your eyes peeled!

An iconic vineyard in the city

Recently opened and housed in the gardens of the Casa degli Atellani (see photo), Leonardo da Vinci’s Vineyard is located just a short distance from the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie where he painted ‘The Last Supper’. Visitors can now take an insightful tour of both the House and the Vineyard.

A Leonardo that you might not have expected…

The Last Supper, the Codex Atlanticus and his machines. But then, there’s also this mysterious portrait, a small, unforgettable painting, attributed to Maestro da Vinci, entitled ‘Portrait of a Musician’. It’s preserved, together with several other breathtaking masterpieces, at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana.

… and the one that you were looking for

Each year, in order to view Leonardo’s Last Supper, 450,000 visitors stand in line. As an image, ‘The Last Supper’ is the most reproduced religious painting of all time and has been put on everything from mirrors, to mouse pads, to musical pillows. In fact, on entering the refectory, visitors are often surprised that this is actually what it looks like.

The MUDEC-Museo delle Culture started life as an operation of archaeological recovery in one of the most lively districts of Milan, the Tortona area. To celebrate 40 years dedicated to fashion, last May Giorgio Armani opened the doors of a new exhibition hub in a former Nestlé granary in Milan’s Tortona district, at the general headquarters of maison Armani. One of Milan’s oldest areas has been restored thanks to a urban project making it the most modern district in the city. The epicentre of the area, packed with high-tech stores, bookstores, cafés, pizzerias and discotheques, is the large raised square dedicated to architect and designer Gae Aulenti. Art During this period, it’s worth planning a visit to the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, a magnificent 18th century villa hosting a highly unusual exhibition featuring a comparison of works from different eras. Other must-sees include the exhibition at the Galleria d’Italia showcasing works by Bellotto and Canaletto, as well as the third exceptional dialogue between Caravaggio’s masterpiece at Brera and those of his imitators.

© ph. Delfino Sisto Legnani - Marco Cappelletti

NARRATIVE FRAMES The purpose of the exhibition, which unfolds among the neo-classical spaces of Villa Belgiojoso, is to explore the theme of private collecting. In order to do this, it compares works on loan from two prestigious Italian contemporary art collections – the Panza di Biumo Collection and the Berlingieri Collection – and the masterpieces hosted by GAM, creating innovative perspectives and unusual frames.

VENETIAN MAGIC Venetian landscape painting seen through the work of two artists who transformed genre painting into the avantgarde movement that characterized the 18th century. An impressive exhibition dedicated to the artistic genius of Antonio Canal, known as “Il Canaletto”, and his nephew Bernardo Bellotto, featuring paintings, sketches and etchings on loan from leading European museums and private collections.

COMPARING MASTERPIECES A new exceptional ‘dialogue’ between one of the museum’s masterpieces and other ‘guest’ works. The star of the event is one of the Pinacoteca’s most famous paintings, The Supper at Emmaus by Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, and other ‘guest’ works, offering visitors a chance to compare five paintings attributed to Caravaggio which received a mixed reception, either being questioned or attributed to other painters who were Caravaggio’s contemporaries.

THE RADIANT CHILD This exhibition, showcasing almost 100 works, explores the short yet intense career of Jean-Michel Basquiat, an emblematic protagonist of American contemporary art. Basquiat succeeded in weaving a legend around himself and his art in just a few years owing to his ability to combine the urban energy of New York with his African origins, which were scarred by slavery and the diaspora.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK | EVENTS

Arnaldo Pomodoro

The Exhibition-Event Four sites, 44 works, 1 large space, 16 small scale models for the theatre, 4 architectural projects and an artistic itinerary that embraces the entire city. Milan celebrates the 90th birthday of renowned sculptor Arnoldo Pomodoro with a large retrospective, hosted in different venues across the city that traces his career from 1955 to the present. 76

THE EXHIBITION The focal point of this exhibition event is the Palazzo Reale where thirty sculptures, chosen by the artist, represent key stages of more than 60 years of artistic research and work. These include bas-reliefs created in the 1950s, formed from materials such as lead, silver and cement, the ‘Colonna del viaggiatore’ (The Column of the Traveler), the ‘Grande tavola della memoria’ (The Great Table of Memory), geometric shapes with surfaces of flayed, corroded polished bronze, and an imposing relief entitled The Battles in fiberglass and graphite powder.

THE PIETRARUBBIA GROUP Pomodoro’s massive architectural sculpture entitled The Pietrarubbia Group (1975-2013), visible for the first time in its entirety, is currently exhibited in piazzetta Reale. This environmental work is comprised of six elements and was created by Pomodoro to commemorate both the ancient town of Pietrarubbia in Montefeltro, and the artist’s origins.

THE ARTIST’S RELATIONSHIP WITH ARCHITECTURE Four ‘visionary’ projects by Pomodoro highlight the dialogue between sculptural work, architecture and the surrounding space. Maquettes, drawings and photos tell the stories of the ‘Simposio Minoa’ in Marsala and Carapace, the wine cellars of Bevagna (Triennale di Milano), the Pietrarubbia monument and the new Cemetery of Urbino (Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro).

A PASSION FOR THE THEATRE The Poldi Pezzoli Museum displays sixteen maquettes that describe the work executed by the sculptor for the stage between 1982 and 2009, from tragedy to opera, from contemporary theatre to music. Visitors can also admire the Armory, designed by Pomodoro in 2000. This room was recently renovated and enhanced by a new lighting system.

ITINERARY IN THE CITY An artistic itinerary connects several points of the city. These include piazza Meda with the Large Disk, a sculpture that was chosen by the Milanese as an iconic symbol of the city, the Spiral Tower located in front of the Piccolo Teatro, and one of Milan’s most secret and fascinating places, the Ingresso nel labirinto (‘Entrance to the Labyrinth’), a life-size labyrinth, measuring approximately 170 square metres, built into the underground space of an old mechanical workshop, owned at that time by the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation, and now home to the headquarters of Fendi (via Solari 35).

A generation of young artists seen in Prada Foundation’s brand new space in the Galleria. Unmissable. Worlds away but equally special, experience a whole new dimension of artistic awesomeness at two other must-see shows: an exhibition by contemporary Japanese artist Araki, and that of epic American author Robert Frank.

INTIMATE RITUALS Osservatorio, Prada Foundation’s new exhibition space located in Milan’s iconic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, is dedicated to photography and visual languages. The inaugural exhibition, Give Me Yesterday, is a project exploring the use of photography as a personal diary over a period ranging from the early 2000s to the present. The exhibition features the work of 14 Italian and international artists.

THE CITY THAT ROSE FROM ITS ASHES From 1943 to 1953, from bombings to reconstruction; the decade marking the rebirth of Milan, a crucial period in the history of the city, told through 170 vintage pictures, videos, documents, war relics, memorabilia and much more. Invaluable testimonies of epochmaking events that radically changed the face of the city.

AMERICA ON THE ROAD “That crazy feeling in America, when the sun is hot on the streets and the music comes out of the jukebox or from a nearby funeral. This is what Robert Frank captured in tremendous photographs taken as he travelled on the road around practically forty eight states in an old used car.” This is the preface of Jack Kerouac’s book The Americans; the photographic project that in the mid-Fifties, changed the perception of reportage; 83 of the original images from that book are now on show in Milan for the first time. © Robert Frank, Trolley, New Orleans, 1955.

Entertainment Roberto Bolle gathers the best stars in the world to appear in his dance extravaganza, while Falstaff returns to Milan’s premiere opera house, La Scala, with one of its best proponents. And, out of town, don’t miss the immersive experience of the Carnival in Venice, with a one-of-a-kind event.

A BALLETT OF (SUPER)STARS The best dancers from the world’s most renowned theatres explore the history of one-anda-half centuries of ballet, with a selection of the most famous and evocative pieces of 18th and 19th century repertoires. Roberto Bolle and Friends, the show conceived and organized by the La Scala étoile, has occupied squares and theatres, bringing dance to places where it has never been performed before. The two Milan dates celebrate another year of the show’s extraordinary success.

THE DECLINE OF A GENTLEMAN Verdi described the retirement home that he built in piazza Buonarroti, Milan, for musicians who had fallen upon hard times, as “my best work”. Italian director Damiano Michieletto conceived the idea of setting his poignant Falstaff here. The humiliation and decline of the pleasureseeking nobleman are portrayed in the rooms of the present-day Casa Verdi, which is faithfully reproduced by stage sets. Maestro Zubin Mehta will conduct the opera, while baritone Ambrogio Maestri, a natural for the role of Sir John Falstaff, effortlessly takes the part.

OUT OF TOWN | VENICE A MASKED DREAM Carnival in Venice needs no introduction (11-28 February, www.carnevale.venezia.it). One of the city’s most eagerly awaited and not to be missed events, it should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. To celebrate the occasion, lavish private balls are organized in aristocratic palazzi. The most exclusive and historical of them all is the ‘Ballo del Doge’. Not just a masked event, but ‘the Ball’ par excellence, the most luxurious in Venice thanks to its venue (the majestic Palazzo Pisani Moretta, an historic building on the Grand Canal), immaculate attention to the design of the theatrical sets, a banquet fit for kings and the elite international guests in attendance, whose anonymity is protected by masks and lavish costumes. This year’s theme is ‘Venice is… so Splendid, so Magic, so Glam, so You!’, which draws inspiration from plays, music and dance. Take note of the dress code: dressing up in period costumes is a must.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK | STEVE MCCURRY

10 questions for... Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for more than thirty years 66-year-old photographer Steve McCurry has covered many areas of international and civil conflict around the world. His portrait of an ‘Afghan girl’ is an icon of our times. In 2009, he received Milan’s coveted Ambrogino d’Oro award and, in 2010, the city dedicated an important retrospective to him.

Three adjectives that describe Milan. Stylish. Vibrant. Cultured.

as the La Scala theatre. It’s an impressive area for culture and the arts!

How would you define your relationship with the city? Milan is a place I always look forward to returning to. I feel at home at Milan, and have many friends there. I’d say I have a close kinship to the city.

What do you like or perhaps dislike about Italian style when it is applied to creativity or work? Italians have an exceptional sense of design, beauty, flair, and balance. It’s no coincidence that some of the best fashion designers in the world are based in Milan. Italian achievement in art, sculpture, and literature goes back thousands of years and continues today.

Streets, corners, faces: when you’re here, what makes you want to take out your camera? One of the things I love about Milan is how there are so many hidden places not visible from the street: you find amazing and interesting gardens and palazzos (1), often behind closed doors. In your opinion, who has best immortalized Milan and managed to capture its soul? Leonardo da Vinci, with “The Last Supper”: you can’t really do any better than that as a recognizable work of art. And Giorgio Armani: he’s another creative force that represents Milan. (2) The capital of fashion, design and shopping: what do you look for when you come here? Milan is great for finding new clothes. I remember getting a fitted Armani suit one of the last times I was in Milan. A place for good food. Can you name some of your favourite addresses? Ristorante Cracco (3) is great for dinner. Armani/Ristorante is a good choice as well. La Libera is my choice for a private dinner with a group of friends because of their informal atmosphere, excellent wine, and the very elegant owner, Italo. For a more quiet dinner, my favorite is Il Verdi. I also enjoy the Terrazza Gallia restaurant at the Excelsior Hotel Gallia, and their lounge and bar for an aperitivo. If you had a free half-day here in Milan, how would you spend it? Exploring the Milan Duomo and the surrounding area. There are two worldclass museums in the neighborhood, as well

88

What is your definition of luxury? Being able to travel and explore the incredible world we live in is a luxury for me.

3

You are well-known for your focus on many of the world’s most disadvantaged people. Milan has to deal on a daily basis with the growing number of refugees: what message would you give? Clearly, the situation with the refugees will take some serious creative thought to find a solution to the problem.
