What is Video Encoding & How Videos are encoded? In today’s world, technology has evolved to a great extent and no doubt, most organizations are taking full advantage of it. And one of these advancements is nothing but video encoding. It can be defined as the process of converting digital video files from one standard digital video format into another. Coming to the main objective, the purpose of this is for compatibility and efficiency with a standard set of applications and hardware such as for video streaming, DVD/Blu-ray, mobile, or general video editing. And the bottom line is that the encoding process transforms the video and audio data in the file and then does compression is done as per the specifications of the encoding standard chosen. How Videos are Encoded? Before understanding video encoding, it is important for you to know about video codec. A codec is a device or software used to compress or decompress different types of digital media files. The“codec”is categorized into two parts, namely, encode and decode. Talking about the first one, the encoder performs the compression (encoding) function and the decoder performs the decompression (decoding) function. It ’ s observed that some codecs include both of these components. There is no arguing with the fact that digital video exists in different ways each with specific variables such as codecs, containers, and bitrates. Always keep this in mind that different devices have diverse specifications that involve one or more of these variables. When you encode a video, it is important for you to consider. 1.the original source format and the method of capture. 2.the output formats that you require. 3. any later encoding operations that may have been done on the video source, and Some Popular Video Codecs Following is the list of popular video codecs. 1.MPEG: It is considered one of the biggest families in a video codec, and the best part is that it is the most common video format. The MPG, MPE, MPA, M15, M1V, MP2 etc. are some of the formats included. In addition, there is an MPEG format, including MPEG video, MPEG audio and MPEG (video, audio synchronization) of three parts, MP3 (MPEG-3). While audio files are a typical application of the MPEG audio, while video includes MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG4. 2. DivX: It is a kind of video encoding technology that can be said produced for DVD, which works with a certain type of MPEG-4 file Most of the DivX videos use avi, DivX, and Div extension. 3.XviD: An open source version of DivX, popular among movie pirates. Always remember that as long as you install the Xvid decoder, all DivX media files will be played by the machine. Most use Xvid encoded files to avi extension. 4. X264: It helps in compressing H.264 videos and is very popular for high definition videos.
