Selling food has made Walmart Supercenters different and profitable. The lesson Walmart has learned is that food sells better than anything else does. If the company can sell food in small stores at the same price as in its giant stores, it has a price advantage compared to its competitors. The downside is that Walmart will likely have to open four or five smallformat stores for each supercenter or Sam’s Club to maintain volume and make small-format stores profitable.
