Everybody has a story of courage — even if it’s about how we could have had more of it. Quite often, the best stories are when we do not have enough courage, yet forge ahead anyway. This month, Southlake Style is full of courageous stories from the likes of CEOs, mothers, entrepreneurs, volunteers and even a Broadway actress. And that’s before you’ll read about all the professional women featured in our eighth annual Women In Business section. To lead things off, AT&T Business CEO and Southlake resident Anne Chow shares how she forged her courage throughout her career spanning three decades at the global telecommunications giant. By embracing her differences, as well as the differences of those around her, she propelled her career to leading a $36 billion global business unit. If her story resonates with you, consider attending our fifth annual Women’s Luncheon, where she will serve as our keynote speaker. Anne tells us that being courageous means being uncomfortable, and I’m sure Madeline Ricketts couldn’t agree more. Earlier this year, Madeline opened her own floral design store in Southlake at the age of 22. Going from a hobby to a college side hustle and now a career, she’s carving her own path in the world. I know where I’ll be buying Nicole’s flowers for our upcoming anniversary! Through sharing stories like these and shopping local, we empower each other to forge new and ever-growing paths forward.

Yours in Southlake Style,

A New Kind Of Bond Girl

T

he name isn’t James Bond. At least, not anymore. While Daniel Craig will star as the stunning special agent one last time in “No Time To Die” on Oct. 8, “Captain Marvel” star Lashana Lynch will take over for him as the new 007. With MI6 going to the girls, now’s a good time to look back at all of the women who showed the guys how espionage is really done. You can’t talk about female spies without mentioning “Charlie’s Angels.” Whether it was Jaclyn Smith in the original series, Cameron Diaz in the 2000 movie or Kristen Stewart in the recent remake, these ladies pack quite a punch. But not as much as Scarlett Johansson, who has taken on Korean gangsters in “Lucy” and teamed up with the Avengers as Black Widow. Hayley Atwell foils the Soviet Union's plans during the early days of the MCU as “Agent Carter,” and Jennifer Garner shows that she can juggle multiple identities in “Alias.” Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie always gets her own fill of spy action, whether she’s uncovering a murder conspiracy in “Salt” or playing opposite her former husband in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence and Gina Carano take on a more serious edge with brutal thrillers like “Atomic Blonde,” “Red Sparrow” and “Haywire.” But not all spies are as lethal, with Anne Hathaway, Melissa McCarthy and Mila Kunis bringing on the laughs in comedies like “Get Smart,” “Spy” and “The Spy Who Dumped Me.” Whoever they are, these female agents prove that they’re more than just a pretty face.

Pink Is The New Black

Every October, Americans around the country rally together for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Professional athletes wear pink to show support for survivors, organizations raise money for research and supporters help out in any way they can. This October, that cause is being taken up again as people both nationally and locally take part in Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“It was so helpful,” Mimi says. “The day of surgery, I arrived home, [and] I sat on one of my sofas and sunk into the sofa. I had two people try to help me up, but it was painful. Pressing on the elbows and arms caused a lot of pain to the breast. Once I got the chair, I could get up on my own. It helped me be independent.” The Friday Night Lights also provide an opportunity for Southlake residents to give back. Each season, one of Dragon Football’s home games serves as Pink Out Night, where breast cancer survivors are recognized and fans pass the bucket for donations. Last year’s Pink Out game raised over $4,000 for Susan G. Komen. This year’s Pink Out Game is set for Friday, Oct. 8.

National Campaigns

Spreading Awareness

October Goes Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., which is based in Dallas, is one of the many national organizations that support survivors and strives to educate people about breast cancer. In the last 10 years, the organization has provided over 192,000 mammograms, 858,000 patient navigation services and 240,000 breast health education services to people in need, according to its website. Susan G. Komen, another nonprofit, also contributes to the fight against cancer by funding research. Since 1982, the organization has contributed approximately $1.1 billion towards research and $2.2 billion on education, screening and treatment.

Local Efforts

Locals are also doing their part in Southlake to spread breast cancer awareness. Kathleen Ruth is one Southlake resident who founded The Healing Chair’s DFW chapter in 2019. The Healing Chair provides recliners to breast cancer survivors who are recovering from mastectomies. Mimi Tran was Southlake’s first recipient.

12 • OCT 21

One of the easiest ways to show support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to get a mammogram and encourage others to get mammograms as well. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the higher the five-year relative survival rate is, according to NBCF’s website. Fundraising is also a big part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Whether it’s putting money in the bucket at Dragon Stadium, hosting your own fundraiser via social media or even taking part in one of Susan G. Komen’s Race For The Cure events, don’t underestimate the power of your dollar. “Now going on more than 30 years, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is important because it provides an opportunity and platform for the entire country to focus on the reality that this is still a critically urgent disease… that touches everyone in some way,” Susan G. Komen communications director Sean Tuffnell says.

BROADWAY ACTOR

THIS SOUTHLAKE NATIVE SHINES IN THE SPOTLIGHT

WHAT GOT YOU STARTED IN PERFORMING? When I was in Carroll Middle School, I won Best Actress in Texas UIL’s one-act play contest. I was also doing shows at the OhLook Performing Arts Center and the Fort Worth Dallas Ballet Company. WHEN DID YOU FIRST TRY DIRECTING? The first show I ever directed was a production of “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” at Carroll. The high schoolers directed the middle schoolers, and we toured through the elementary schools. WHEN DID YOU HIT BROADWAY? I knew if I wanted to pursue my dreams as an actor and a performer, I would eventually have to move to New York City. I left Texas to perform at Walt Disney World and pursue theater at the University of South Florida. After I graduated, I moved to New York to continue acting and directing. WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ROLES? I loved playing Elle Woods in OhLook’s adaptation of “Legally Blonde.” I played Hippolyta and Titania in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and Ophelia in “Drowning Ophelia.”

14 • OCT 21

ask A. . victoria rae sook

WHEN DID YOU TAKE DIRECTING MORE SERIOUSLY? There was a point in one of my shows when I started feeling empathy for every character on stage, not just my own. I realized I could see shows on a larger scale than I ever thought possible. Because I’ve acted so much, I know what I need to do to help an actor get to the place they need to be with their character. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE FAVORITE SHOWS YOU’VE DIRECTED? At the height of the pandemic, I directed a virtual production of “Twelfth Night” that brought a lot of joy during a dark time. I also just finished an original show called “Moms: The Musical,” which is one of the best productions I’ve ever had the chance to work on. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT BEING BACK ON BROADWAY? I am just excited to be back in a rehearsal room after 18 months. What I loved was totally taken away thanks to COVID-19. When we got back onstage, I was reunited with all my writers, actors and producers. We all just started crying. We couldn’t believe we were in the same room together again after being away for so long. This is what I do. This is my calling.

Deciding To Dream

P

uebla, Mexico, is a long way from Southlake — 1,126 miles to be exact. At one point it was my home. Looking back, I can’t help but ask “How in the world did I get here?” At 18, I decided to take advantage of a remarkable opportunity to attend college in the United States. And like any other college student, I had to get a job after I graduated. But I wanted more than just a job. I had big plans and big dreams. So with a fresh degree in hand, I considered the decision in front of me: Do I go back to my family in Mexico, or do I stay here in my new adopted country and work toward making my lofty dreams a reality? If you grew up in a different country or even in a different state, you know that decisions like this are not easy. There are pros and cons to weigh equally, and no one holds a crystal ball. I was terrified, but in the end, the tug of my dreams pulled the hardest. I decided to stay and work in the United States, and work I did! Eventually, a friend and I started our own oil and gas company — two women in a man's world. I worked 16-hour days and fought hard to get everyone in the industry to take me seriously. After a few years, I earned the position of vice president of land and acquisitions for an electric utility company that owned, operated and developed Class II saltwater disposal facilities in Oklahoma.

Life rarely sits still though, and soon I was faced with a new decision. Should I continue on the corporate path or pursue a new direction: staying at home with my two young children? This time, the family tug won out, and I traded the drills and contracts for diapers and carpools. For five years, I relished the title of mom as I raised my beautiful babies from home and supported my husband in his growing career. In 2020, ever moving onward and forward, I found myself facing yet another decision. The tug toward corporate work came pulling again, and for those of you that have found yourself choosing between career and home, it can be a complicated one. With much thought, I decided to take a different direction and try my hand in the title insurance business, jumping in feet first as vice president of marketing for Blackstone Title. New job. New title. Same internal drive. Today, as a partner in my title company, I continue to ask the same old question from above: how in the world did I get here? Never in a million years would I have thought that an 18-year-old girl from Mexico would be given the opportunities to make so many of her dreams come true in America. Today, I claim Southlake as my home, and I am grateful for the journey that led me here — one decision at a time.

fter launching in 2015, The NOW Massage quickly became one of the hottest wellness destinations in Los Angeles, known for its high-quality massages and unique beachside-inspired aesthetic. Today it has expanded to 17 locations across the country, including one in Southlake. “We founded the company because we saw there was a void in the marketplace for next-level massage services in an inspired setting without the time commitment and cost of a typical day spa,” says Gara Post, co-founder and chief creative officer. “The NOW was founded on the premise that in today’s stressful, digitally-driven society, massages are a necessity, not a luxury.” The NOW offers three different Swedish-inspired massages specifically designed for stress relief, relaxation and muscle recovery. The NOW relieves tension and reduces anxiety, while The HEALER promotes calmness and reduces emotional stress. And The STRETCH is a sports-inspired recovery massage that can improve range of motion and reduce recovery time between workouts. THE POWER of FLOWERS TROPHY BLOOMS OWNER MADELINE RICKETTS IS ACHIEVING HER DREAMS

I

n need of an art credit to graduate from high school, Madeline Ricketts decided to take a floral design class, thinking it sounded fun. It didn’t take long for her to fall in love with it. Eventually, her newfound love for florals turned into her own business venture called Trophy Blooms. Launching her website right out of high school and working by herself throughout college, Madeline now has a Southlake storefront, a host of regulars and a booming business — all at the ripe age of 22. CULTIVATING TROPHY BLOOMS

Almost immediately after graduating from Byron Nelson High School in 2017, Madeline decided to do floral design on the side to make some extra money. With a website made by her sister, Hannah, Trophy Blooms was born into existence. 20 • OCT 21

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

“We started with the designer’s choice arrangements and all that type of stuff, and we just launched it,” Madeline says. “I made a Facebook post about it like, ‘Hey, I do flowers.’ Then… it just started to go up from there.” Madeline entered the University of North Texas as an education major, but it was Trophy Blooms’ early days of success that led her to rethink her plans. “The more I did it, I’m like, ‘OK, this can be my career,’” Madeline says. “So I changed majors [to] hospitality management.” From then on, Madeline only had flowers on her brain, booking her first wedding when she was just 19 years old. She was a one-woman show, making every single piece for her first wedding — and every wedding after. “It was stressful, but I was proud of my work, and it was exactly what [the bride] wanted,” Madeline says. “I would stay up all night long for days, and I’d get it all laid out… by myself in my parents’ laundry room. That’s where I did all my work during college, and that’s where I did my work for my first wedding.” Working 10 weddings during college on top of miscellaneous events and orders, Madeline says she sometimes left class early to get flowers ready. “It was a difficult balance for those four years, but I think it was definitely worth it, because I grew my business and I feel like I learned a lot that way too,” Madeline reflects. GROWING A STOREFRONT

In early February, Madeline — with just one semester of college left — began to look for a storefront for Trophy Blooms, having saved the last four years of revenue. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

“I’m going to be here every day, all day, so I can’t do it during college,” Madeline says. “So as soon as I graduated with my degree, I could be at the store every single day.” Driving around in Southlake, Madeline noticed a space available to lease at 335 N. Carroll Ave., tucked between Nothing Bundt Cakes and Posh Nails & Spa. “I’m like, ‘I should check on that and see if it’s still available, because what a great location,’” Madeline says. “It’s the right kind of foot traffic, and it’s in the square.” After inquiring, Madeline submitted her application, which included a business plan, a record of her prior sales and her vision of what she wanted the shop to look like, among other things. Her application was approved only days later. “When I heard it got approved, I was like, ‘Wow. OK, so it’s happening,’” Madeline says. After getting the lease all squared away, renovations on the space — which had a past life as a tutoring center — began near the end of April. The renovations were extensive. New flooring, ceiling tiles and lighting fixtures were installed, and new furniture was placed. Hannah and Natalie, Madeline’s mom, also helped paint the mural on the back wall. “It felt a little surreal,” Madeline says. “Especially when the flooring and painting was done.” With each passing day, the renovations got closer to finishing, and Madeline’s vision for Trophy Blooms got closer to coming to fruition. Before she even knew it, Trophy Blooms was ready for its grand opening. PROVIDING FLORAL SUPPORT

DRAGON FOOTBALL GOES UNDEFEATED IN NON-DISTRICT Undefeated through its first four games of the season, Dragon Football is proving to be just as dominant this year with junior quarterback Kaden Anderson at the helm. The Dragons didn’t disappoint in their first game of the season, defeating Highland Park 45-21. Following a narrow 36-35 win against Rockwall-Heath, the Dragons continued to prove their might with a shutout 31-0 win against Prosper. And in their last non-district game of the season against Arlington Martin, the Dragons did it again. Against a team they defeated last year 30-26, Southlake Carroll repeated history, topping the Warriors 31-7. Now playing district games, Southlake Carroll continues to face familiar opponents while celebrating some big moments. Homecoming was celebrated on Sept. 24, Pink Out Night is set for Oct. 8 and Senior Night is set for Oct. 29. SOUTHLAKE CHAMBER CELEBRATES 2021 AWARD WINNERS The Southlake Chamber of Commerce recognized 14 winners during its 2021 awards banquet. Held on Friday, Aug. 27 at The Marq, the theme for the Southlake Chamber’s 2021 awards banquet was “New Orleans Night” and treated guests to an evening filled with food, fortune tellers and photos with baby alligators. Mimi Tran was recognized as the Citizen of the Year for chairing the Carroll Education Foundation and raising over $100,000 for cancer treatment through the Me Squared Cancer Foundation. But she wasn’t the only one recognized. First Financial Bank was honored with the Legacy Award, while the Southlake Foundation won Civic Group of the Year and the Community Impact Newspaper won Corporate Business of the Year, according to a press release. Earthwise Pet was also recognized with an Act of Kindness Award for its contributions to the Chamber during the height of the pandemic last year. Other individuals recognized include Anika Bajpai for Youth of the Year, Chuck Hulett for Ambassador of the Year, Reasa Selph and Virginia Hinkle for Volunteer of the Year, Bill Tait with State Farm for Small Business of the Year, Ronak Kothari for Director of the Year, Ryan Davis for the President’s Award and Monika Heaton and Dr. Paige Sohn for the Chairman’s Award.

MISS SOUTHLAKE AND OUTSTANDING TEEN 2022 ANNOUNCED Miss Southlake and Miss Southlake Outstanding Teen have been crowned for 2022. During the Miss Southlake Scholarship Organization’s competition in August, Landry Champlin and J-Belle Kimbrell were announced the new Miss Southlake and Outstanding Teen for the organization. Landry was formerly crowned Miss Plano in 2020 and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music with an emphasis on musical theater at Oklahoma City University, according to a media release. She encourages others to step out of their comfort zone through her social impact initiative “Live Fearless: Defining Life Without Limits.” J-Belle, meanwhile, was formerly crowned Miss Coppell’s Outstanding Teen in 2020. CARROLL THEATRE PERFORMS ‘BOOK OF LIZ’ Southlake Carroll Theatre performed its first show of the 2021 season last month at the Black Box Theater. Based on the book of the same name by David and Amy Sedaris, “Book of Liz” tells the story of Sister Elizabeth Donderstock, who runs away from home and experiences new adventures at a family restaurant called Plymouth Crock. The show saw a successful run from Sept. 16-18, and the students were excited to have their first live in-person theater performance in over a year. The next show Carroll Theatre has to look forward to this season is “Elf: The Musical,” which runs from Nov. 11-14.

SOUTHLAKE ROTARY CLUB SPONSORS THREE STUDENTS FOR GUATEMALA LITERACY PROJECT Three Guatemalan kids will learn how to read thanks to the Southlake Rotary Club. All education after sixth grade in Guatemala must be paid for out of pocket by families looking to send their children through school, according to a media release. This has resulted in Guatemala having one of the lowest literacy rates and highest poverty rates in the world. However, a student can be sponsored for $1,000 through the Guatemala Literacy Project to pay for books, tuition and supplies to go to school. The Southlake Rotary Club donated a $3,000 check to help three students break the cycle of poverty for their families. Learn more about the Guatemala Literacy Project at GuatemalaLiteracy.org. How This Beauty Spa Owner Went From Singing To Skin Care

L

ong before she got her esthetician’s license or opened Loredana’s Beauty Spa alongside Highway 114, Lory Craciun experienced a larger-than-life singing career that took her all over the world. Whether she was performing in Romania or Japan, Lory has dedicated her life to bringing light to people’s lives. Now she’s continuing her mission from her beauty spa in Southlake, making people feel confident and comfortable with themselves every day.

I WAS BORN IN… the communist state of Romania. Our family would grow their own fruits and vegetables and make their own produce. The electricity was shut off at 9 p.m. every night. If we had to study or read, we had to light a candle or a gas lamp. We had to struggle for everything we had. It was not easy. We had a very difficult time in our life. SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL IN KINDERGARTEN… my parents noticed that I liked to sing a lot. They would put me on stage at weddings to sing traditional wedding songs, and when I became a teenager I sang for the president, Nicolae Ceaușescu. WHEN I WAS 16 YEARS OLD… I went to a private music school and was fortunate enough to work with one of the most famous singers in Romania, Mihaela Runceanu. She was a fantastic singer. She could sing anything — jazz, blues, rock, everything. AFTER STUDYING UNDER MIHAELA FOR A YEAR… she was killed in her home. It was very hard for me to experience. I had just started my career, and all of a sudden she was no longer in my life. All of Romania came to her funeral; There wasn’t any room in the streets. She was very, very loved by our people. TWO YEARS LATER… Romania experienced a huge revolution. Many people died, but we won our democracy and were no longer under dictatorial rule. We became a democratic country. We were finally free to travel out of the country and live a free life. We understood our freedom very well because we’ve had to live so long without it. AFTER MIHAELA’S PASSING… they invented this music festival in her honor, and I went to compete. I participated three times and never won anything. I finally said ‘This is it, this is the last time. If I don’t win anything, I will never come to this show again.’ I ended up winning first place.

38 • OCT 21

I STARTED GETTING SINGING CONTRACTS… from all over the world. I sang everywhere — Turkey, Egypt, France. I learned 10 different languages so I could sing in the listener's native tongues. I also had the chance to work with many celebrities over the years — Steven Segal, Christina Aguilera, 50 Cent, Eminem, Sylvester Stallone, the Backstreet Boys, Avril Lavigne. I even met Sting three separate times. ONE DAY… a Japanese promoter came to Romania, and he was looking for professional singers for a big show. The contract was for six months, but I liked it so much I kept going back again, again and again. I ended up living in Japan for 17 years. I STARTED THINKING ABOUT… what I would do when I’m not a singer anymore. I enjoyed doing makeup and helping my colleagues with their hair and nails, so I went to makeup school and did Japanese nail art for a few years before deciding to go into skin and massage therapy. I did seven years of massage, nails and facials while simultaneously singing at night. I never stopped singing. IN 2014 WHILE I WAS SINGING IN A PIANO BAR… I met my future husband, Paul. He was a great American Marine for 21 years and fought in Desert Storm. He worked with Marine One and was working with some engineers in Japan. We saw each other a few times and after his contract finished, he asked me to come live with him in America. We married on Dec. 31 in 2015 and were married for five years before he passed away in April. I miss him so much. IN BOTH SINGING AND SKIN CARE… I make people happy. I make people happy when I sing for them, I make people happy when I provide them skin treatment. I want to make people feel good about themselves, whether they have acne, wrinkles or [fine] lines.

AT&T BUSINESS CEO ANNE CHOW EMBODIES COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP

EO. Author. Mentor. Southlake mom. Anne Chow isn’t just one of these important roles — she’s all of them. Rather than compartmentalizing her responsibilities and juggling different hats, Anne has found success by forging her own path and embracing all aspects of herself along the way. That approach landed her in a historical seat. In September 2019, Anne was appointed the CEO of AT&T Business, becoming the first woman in the position and the first woman of color CEO at AT&T. Now, in her 32nd year with AT&T, Anne’s responsible for a $36 billion operating unit, serving 3 million global business customers. Whether you know her as an executive, neighbor or one of “Fortune’s” 2020 Most Powerful Women in Business, what you see is what you get with Anne. OCT 21 • 41

PAVING HER PATH

Anne has always been fascinated with learning how things worked, so it’s no surprise she followed her father’s footsteps and pursued bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering. After graduating from Cornell University, the self-proclaimed lifelong learner landed a role with AT&T as a network architect, unaware that she would spend more than three decades rising the ranks of the world's largest telecommunications company. “I love working at the intersection of people and technology,” Anne says. “I was hooked on this idea of being a business leader, not only a technology leader.” During those initial years, Anne saw AT&T’s scope of services firsthand, and the diversity of opportunities ahead resonated with Anne’s love of learning. By taking management positions in different operating units ranging from product management and indirect sales to international operations and strategy and planning, Anne started to understand how different teams left an impact on various stakeholders. As Anne started to pave her own path in the workplace, she saw that it took courage to embrace being different. “When I achieved middle management, the role I had as I was moving up on the corporate ladder, there were not a lot of people who looked like me,” Anne says. “Whether I was the only woman in the room, the only minority or the only woman minority in a room, I always had this notion of, ‘Yes, I am different.’ As a result, the development of my leadership style naturally brought me to being courageous.” Anne’s authenticity and eagerness to get to know her teammates on a personal level dropped walls, and it encouraged her employees to feel like they could bring up any ideas for consideration, which in turn helped shape more inclusive conversations. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

“Anne does that by being true to herself and knowing a person is bigger than what they do in their job,” says Stacey Marx, AT&T National Business and Channel President. “Not only does she encourage them to be their authentic self, but she will truly ask [about their lives] and mean it.” Seeing her employees flourish when they brought their full selves to the table and felt inspired to get involved pushed Anne to keep inspiring others. “Trust is the most important currency in business,” Anne says. “My job is to support them in their learning, in their areas of expertise and in their achievements, both personal and professional. I always found I would get the most reward from helping others be great — helping others realize their potential.” Vice President of National Business Chris Donan says he felt seen by Anne even before they started closely working together. While working in the Houston office, Chris and his wife welcomed their second daughter into the family. In his first few days at home juggling a new baby and his job responsibilities, Chris received an unexpected package from Anne filled with clothes, colorful books and a stuffed animal, congratulating the Donan family on their newborn. Years later, that thoughtful gift still touches Chris. Even though they didn’t know each other well, Anne showed she was thinking of him. “I thought, ‘Wow. I could work for someone like this for a while,’” Chris says. “The capacity for authentic personal connections has to be something that is driven within someone’s character.” Chris says that one of the biggest takeaways he has after working alongside Anne for years is that people should be at the center of every decision. “Something she’s passed along to me is, ‘If your No. 1 priority is not people, there’s something wrong,’” Chris OCT 21 • 43

only its members but also the community at large, she felt inspired to get more involved. It eventually led her to form the AT&T Women of Business employee network, which is now nearly 5,000 women strong. By connecting with an even larger audience of women, Anne is showing the next generation of leaders how to pave their own pathways. While she knows it won’t always be easy, she’s taught thousands of women that embracing the uncomfortable helps push things forward.

While creating an open environment sets the foundation, Anne knows that it still takes courage to be open to sharing and hearing new perspectives. Anne credits her parents’ bravery for sparking her courage, stating, “courageousness is within my DNA.” “My parents immigrated to this country from Taiwan in the ’60s,” Anne EMBRACING THE UNCOMFORTABLE says. “They didn’t speak the language. opportunity. In 2020, she co-wrote “The Leader's Guide To Unconscious Bias: How To Reframe Bias, Cultivate Connection And Create High-Performing Teams,” tackling the notion of bias with facts and real-life experiences. “All humans have bias, so to have bias is human,” Anne says. “The danger of unconscious bias is we have this bias to be people who are like us. For me, this is why creating that open environment in a trusted way is key. Each person’s perspective is as equally important as each other.” Anne knows it takes bravery to engage in these conversations, but it’s what’s necessary to progress. “Here we are in 2021, and there’s so much strife in the world. What’s needed in every facet of society is courageous leadership,” Anne says. “I’m looking to create that dialogue, that open, safe space in different structures both inside and outside the company.” At AT&T, Anne not only showcases her courageous leadership but ensures her employees of color feel like they have the tools necessary to be successful. Anne partnered with AT&T’s chief diversity officer to create the organization's Women of Color initiative, an employee network group consisting of approximately 200 women and their supervisors. “I’m focused on next-generation leadership,” Anne says. “We work through challenging topics, like the emotional tax of being a woman of color at work, how to engage with others and how to encounter bias.” Anne says the importance of including the supervisors is to ensure that they too can learn from the perspectives of these women. It’s one of the steps Anne is taking to ensure that she is not the last woman of color to hold a CEO position with AT&T. “This program will be in place long after I am gone,” Anne says. “It’s what I am doing to make sure I’m not the last one. So the next generation of women leaders and multicultural women leaders don’t have to pave the same kind of ground that I did — that they can show up more quickly in their careers as their authentic selves.” Anne knows the benefit when she shows others that they are not alone. “By telling some of my stories, it helps others,” Anne says. “When you’re going through it, you think you are the problem and you’re the only one. That’s so far from the truth.” Anne aspires to keep moving forward, not only by taking on new challenges but by finding new ways to be there for her employees. Because she knows that if she empowers them to achieve their goals, it will make the overall group more successful. “Leadership is not only a science in which you master,” Anne says. “It’s part art. It’s this constant practice.” Be a part of the conversation about “Leading Courageously” with Anne Chow at our fifth annual Women’s Luncheon, presented by Texas Health Southlake, on Oct. 8. home STYLE Spooky Season

W

ith Halloween right around the corner, many locals are looking to redecorate their haunted houses for the trick-or-treaters who come knocking on Oct. 31. If you don’t know where to start for your ghostly makeover, here are a few pointers on how to get your home ready just in time for spooky season.

GROTESQUE GARLANDS

The first thing you’ll want to look at is what kind of eerie aesthetic you want to go for with your selection of Halloween garlands. Whether you go for webs, ghosts, bats, spiders or even seasonal fall colors, there are several creepy critters and designs you can select to give your front porch the ominous vibe you’re going for. If you really want your home to stand out, you can also add in a few Halloween-colored lights to give it the shine that it needs for such a terrifying night.

FRIGHTENING FIGURES

Ghouls, goblins and monsters galore. If there’s one thing that defines Halloween, it’s the creepy crawlies that give you chills and make your hairs stick up at night. Add some personality to your home by sticking one of these 4- to 8-foot figures on your front porch. There are several monsters you can pick to your liking, whether you go for the classic skeleton, the ghastly wizard, the wild werewolf or even Frankenstein’s monster. Whatever you choose, these frightening figures will make trick-or-treaters think twice about approaching your doorstep.

JEEPERS CREEPERS AND JACK-O'-LANTERNS

When you’re done setting up everything else the way you want it to look, finish your Halloween decorations with a traditional jack-o’-lantern. After you grab a pumpkin and scoop out the insides, carve a design into it to make it pop out on your porch. You could go for the traditional pumpkin face or more elaborate, quirkier designs that can incorporate different characters, letters and shapes. You can even paint over your pumpkin if you want another color to stand out other than bright orange. When you complete your carving, light up a candle and place it on the inside of your pumpkin so its eerie gaze can greet trick-or-treaters when they come knocking.

sian and barbecue cuisine comes together inside Loro Asian Smokehouse & Bar. Opening in early July, Loro is a fresh new concept in the Metroplex created by Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue and Tyson Cole of Uchi. “I think they wanted to take the traditions of both… and create something that is very different,” Loro Dallas head chef Mike Perez says. After opening its first location in Austin in 2018, Loro expanded into Dallas and is aiming to open a third restaurant in Houston later this year. Each location is designed to be similar to each other. “When you open a second one and in a different city, I feel like it’s always compared to the first,”

Mike says. “So it’s important for us to make sure that we have the same consistency for the people that have dined in Austin to come here and get that same experience.” After entering the restaurant, start your night off with one of Loro’s delicious cocktails. The Thai Watermelon Punch comes with gin, lime and spicy Thai chili while the Mandarin Margarita features tequila, mezcal, tangerine and yuzu. For an even more chill experience, embrace your inner kid and order a boozy slushie. Loro Dallas has four to choose from: the frozen gin and tonic, the mango sake slush, the frozen mojito or the Vietnamese coffee.

LOCALFLAVOR review

After loving on some libations, it’s time to satiate your hunger with Loro’s bar food. The Candied Kettle Corn — unlike its name implies — features brisket burnt ends with the Japanese spice togarashi and sea salt, while the wonton chips and dip is served with Thai green salsa and peanut sambal. For a healthier bite, try the tomato and cucumber salad, which comes with cantaloupe, cilantro oil, lemon zest and mint, or the snap pea and toasted coconut salad, which features grilled pineapple vinaigrette, green beans, Thai basil and peanuts. But you don’t have to settle on just a salad. Loro’s oak-grilled snap peas come with kimchi emulsion and toasted sesame while the chicken karaage comes complete with chili aioli, Szechuan salt and Thai herbs. Rice bowls are also a staple at Loro. The restaurant serves five different rice bowls that all feature coconut rice, seasonal pickles and Thai herbs, from the Malaysian curry chicken rice bowl to the oak-smoked salmon rice bowl, ensuring healthy eaters will leave satisfied. For heartier appetites, the menu boasts a variety of meat options, ensuring everyone can get a cut they like. The smoked beef brisket features chili gastrique and Thai herbs, while the smoked baby back duroc pork ribs — available only on Sundays and Mondays starting at 4 p.m. — come with cauliflower pickles and green onions. And make it a point to try one of Loro’s sandwiches. The oak-smoked beef brisket sandwich comes with papaya salad, peanuts, chili aioli and Thai herbs while the Lord Cheeseburger features red onion brisket jam, lettuce and muenster cheese. Loro’s vast menu is also able to accommodate large groups. From the char siew pork belly with house hoisin sauce and celery, to the crispy potatoes with miso mustard, yuzu aioli and toasted white sesame, you won’t ever go wrong. “Everything was designed to share,” Mike says. Of course, every meal should end with a dessert, and Loro has some delightful options that will ensure that dinner ends on a sweet note. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the chocolate chip cookie, served with salted toffee, while the peach-yuzu cobbler with whipped five-spice mascarpone delivers big flavors. Whatever you’re craving, Loro Asian Smokehouse & Bar will sate any appetite with its unique flavors and combinations.

Refreshed, Renovated And Renewed

Copeland’s Of New Orleans Is Back And Better Than Ever After a brief hiatus to undergo renovations, Copeland’s of New Orleans is back and better than ever. The restaurant, located within Hilton Dallas on Southlake Town Square, now has new lighting, carpet, paint and artwork. “It’s just freshening up the space, making it feel a little brighter and more approachable,” says Abby Morgan, the director of sales and marketing. Copeland’s serves up some delicious breakfast for the early birds. After grabbing your morning coffee or juice from Starbucks, dig into the Sunrise Breakfast, which comes complete with two eggs, breakfast potatoes, a choice between bacon, sausage or ham and toast or an English muffin. After finishing your morning meal, hit up Copeland’s again later in the evening as the day comes to a close. Its dinner menu is filled with several delicious, refreshing options. Guests who want something a little lighter can dabble in the brie and strawberry salad, which features spring mix greens, strawberries, toasted almonds, red onion and bacon, while the seafood gumbo showcases classic cajun roux, shrimp and crawfish. For a heartier bite, go for one of the sandwiches. The spicy chicken sandwich features fried chicken on a brioche bun with spicy mayo and sweet and sour pickles, while the burger comes with mixed cheese, bacon, mayo, tiger sauce, lettuce and tomato on a croissant. Diners who want to share a meal can order the jazzy wings — whole chicken wings fried and seasoned, served with cheddar blue cheese or ranch — while the blackened shrimp quesadilla with blackened shrimp, corn, black beans and pico de gallo is sure to satisfy. And it always feels better to end the meal on a sweet note. Chocolate lovers can indulge in the chocolate cream cake, while the red velvet cheesecake provides a smooth and fluffy bite. And the classic carrot cake won’t ever disappoint. “I am excited to be a part of this community and to reopen this,” John Bilek, Copeland’s Of New Orleans’ restaurant manager, says.

Come Watch Multi-Award-Winning Country Music Superstar Kane Brown Perform Live

C

ount one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three — and it’ll be time for Kane Brown to come to Texas! The sensual “Worship You” country singer is known for his powerful vocals, unforgettable lyrics and social media savvy. He’s also used to breaking records, including his most recent endeavor on his Blessed & Free tour, which will make him the first country artist in history to headline every NBA basketball arena in a single tour, a reflection of his lifelong passion for the sport. But basketball is sure to be far from your mind when Brown takes the stage at American Airlines Center later this month, performing a mix of new songs and well-loved hits for his fans. Be prepared to lose your voice singing along to “Famous Friends,” “Be Like That,” “One Thing Right,” “Last Time I Say Sorry,” “Memory” and of course, “One Mississippi. Kane Brown is the winner of a 2021 Academy of Country Music Award for Video of the Year for “Worldwide Beautiful,” as well as a five-time American Music Award winner and

a four-time CMT Music Award winner. His No. 1, self-titled debut album spent a record-breaking 13 weeks at the top of the chart and made him the first artist in Billboard history to top all five Billboard Country charts at the same time. This talented entertainer has also produced two of the moststreamed country songs of all time, the seven-times platinum No. 1 hits “Heaven” and “What Ifs.” When Brown released his second album, “Experiment,” he became the only male country artist in more than 24 years to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 all-genre chart. He’s currently working on a new album, and if it’s even half as good as his EP “Mixtape Vol. 1,” then it’s sure to be another fan favorite. With his irresistible music, handsome demeanor and deep love of family that shines through every song, you’ll have gotten one thing right when you go to see Kane Brown live!
