For more than 15 years, Southlake Style has aspired to be a positive reflection of our community. Many have given us feedback over the years, to which I have always replied, “This community is great — we just put it on paper.” Over the course of 213 issues, we have helped small businesses, supported local organizations and given to many charities. More importantly, we’ve put smiles on our neighbors' faces and in their hearts. I’m proud to say even through these tumultuous times, our team has never wavered on our promises. In parallel to our own growth, the population of Southlake has doubled. That’s twice as many stories to tell and twice as many neighbors with whom to share this special place we all call home. As the entire nation continues to be divided along social and political lines, Southlake has become a national topic of discussion. I’ve heard from neighbors on different sides of some of the nation’s hot topics, and through it all, we must continue the search for common ground through positive stories like those we share again this month. As we go to press, no one knows the outcome of Carroll ISD’s special school board election. What I do know is that some people will feel like they’ve won, while others will feel defeated. I posit life in Southlake is only won if we enjoy it together— like a Friday night sunset at a sold-out Dragon Stadium, a family walk through your favorite city park or a s low-cooked meal at Feedstore BBQ (Happy 20th anniversary to the LaFavers family!). Thanks to the amazing growth of our city, I know there is more than enough good to go around if we just let it.

WELDER

THIS BLACKSMITH WORKS WONDERS WITH A BLOWTORCH

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST INTRODUCTION TO SKILLED LABOR? My family had a construction company when I grew up in Southlake. Back then, we worked on a lot of high-end structural stuff like fences and gates. When we sold the company in 2008, I got this shop over in Keller and eventually opened my own business — DFW Welding and Offroad Services. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH WELDING? I’ve always had a passion for cars. If you wanted something cool, more often than not you needed to weld it. I knew if I wanted to excel at making cool custom creations, I had to learn how to weld. WHAT CAN YOU WELD? Pretty much anything. Aluminum, iron, brass, copper, stainless steel. We offer custom welding on anything from ornate fencing and gates to pallet racks and structural piping. We can even service truck bodies and flatbreads from our fully-equipped welding truck, which can offer mobile services anywhere on the go.

12 • NOV 21

ask A. . nate lucas

HOW DOES THE WELDING PROCESS WORK? There are three main types of welding. There is stick welding, where an electrode melts the metal. Then there is MIG welding, where the welding gun feeds wire through the spool and fuses the two metals together. Then you have TIG welding, which is a controlled electrical short that heats up the metal and fuses it together with a filler rod. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RISKS WITH WELDING? Most welders have issues with their eyes by the time they get older because they deal with sparks that are brighter than the sun. It can actually burn your eyes, even if they’re closed. Galvanized steel and fumes can also be carcinogenic and poisonous, so we try to ventilate our work area as best we can. Protective equipment like masks, gloves and goggles are very, very important when it comes to welding. WHAT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS YOU HAVE LEARNED THROUGH WELDING? My dad had a mantra that if someone else could make it, we could make it. If someone else could do it, we could do it. There’s always going to be a need for skilled labor. As long as the industry keeps going, we’ll keep manufacturing and creating along the way.

Painting Rocky Roads Southlake Sister Cities Starts Rocks For Peace Program

For nearly 30 years, Southlake Sister Cities has been aiming to connect families and children to others in Japan and China. But after COVID-19 shut down travel around the world, Southlake Sister Cities pivoted to more localized efforts. Now teaming up with the city’s community services department, Southlake Sister Cities looks to bring the community together through a new park initiative called Rocks For Peace.

Grapevine And Guinness World Records

During the start of the pandemic in March 2020, Grapevine residents Ron Olsen and Chris Penny started a painted rock trail in Parr Park to lift the community’s spirit during a period of unrest and uncertainty. The rock art trail ended up drawing artists from all over the world, growing to 24,459 painted rocks and winning the Guinness World Record for Largest Display of Painted Pebbles. After seeing what Grapevine was growing, Southlake Sister Cities President Katy Hintze felt inspired to start their own rock art trail in Southlake. “We thought it was such a positive, neat and upbeat idea,” Katy says. “Since we’re in the middle of COVID and can’t do any trips, we really wanted to give our students some more volunteer activities they could participate in locally.”

Building Bridges

Once Southlake Sister Cities told the city it was interested in starting its own rock art trail, the city looked at areas where

14 • NOV 21

it could begin. Eventually, Southlake Sister Cities planted its pebbles in an 800-foot pathway alongside Field Drive in Bob Jones Park that would have the space needed to sustain its growth. Southlake Sister Cities formally launched the trail in late September and hosted kickoff events where families came out and painted their own rocks for the trail. Katy says they’ve added over 150 painted rocks to the trail in just its first week. “We wanted to connect the community,” Katy says. “This is a way for them to be creative, put their positive messages out there and build bridges between people.”

Connecting Through Creativity

With the Southlake Sister Cities trips still on hold at the moment, Katy says she knows firsthand how hard the past year has been on families everywhere. That’s why she feels it’s more important than ever to stay connected in the small ways we can be. “I think we’ve all been cooped up a little too much these past couple of years,” she says. “I hope this rock art trail brings people outside to have something to look forward to.” So whether you bring a painted rock from home or paint one at a future community event, the Rocks For Peace program embodies Southlake Sister Cities’ mission of fostering connection through creativity. “When people come out, they want to come out and find their beautiful rocks alongside others that have been painted,” Katy says. “It’s meant to be something that makes you feel good — gives you a little bit of a smile and makes you feel like you’re a part of something larger than yourself. We’re just getting started.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Connecting Through Creativity

A

lbert Einstein once said, “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative impression and knowledge.” That much is true, but what he didn’t say was how teaching awakens that same joy in ourselves as well. We all remember great teachers in our lives. Their dedication and contribution to their students’ personal and professional development will always stay with them as they grow and mature into young adults. It is easily one of the most noble and admirable professions out there. During my time with Carroll ISD, I had an incredible opportunity teaching and fostering these kids as a substitute teacher. It was those experiences that inspired me to pursue my passion project of writing and publishing my very first children’s book. I pulled my experiences from watching the most talented educators work their magic with their students at Carroll ISD. The inspiration for my first book “Smiley, Happy Planet Earth” came while helping my daughter learn about the many wonders of the solar system, planet Earth and its seasons. It’s no surprise that the main character is, in fact, a school teacher himself, sharing the educational experience with his students in the same way that I have with my own daughter. In my experience, I have learned that there are two useful elements when it comes to both teaching and writing: rhymes and personification. When you present information in a rhyme, it helps young readers follow along while mem-

orizing facts at the same time. This allows them to comprehend and retain a larger amount of information all at once. Take, for instance, this one example that shares how many countries are on the Earth: Planet Earth has many countries. Some have snow, and some have palm trees. We can fly through them or drive, All one hundred and ninety-five! Personification is also helpful with bringing character and personality to a story. It allows inanimate objects to be filled with their own life, much like the four seasons in my own book. Emotional qualities can help establish a connection to physical characteristics of a certain season. It helps imagine what they might say or feel based on their physical properties. For instance, fall may be a little sad because we associate rain with teardrops, while summer may be happy because of the brightness of the sun. For me, creative writing combines some of the most essential things we all strive for: generating ideas and connecting not just with our own feelings, but with those all around us. It helps us strengthen the relationships with our family and friends while exploring subjects and sharing insights about them. That creative environment taught me that everyone I know has their own story to tell or share, even if they don’t know it yet. Life is full of inspiration. Mine comes from establishing connections with my beloved community and exploring our creativity, passions, ideas and dreams together. So share your story. You never know how important it may be.

or over 25 years, Circle-E Facility & Home Services has provided commercial-grade services to the DFW Metroplex. Originally founded by Doc and Debra Elliott, Circle-E Facility & Home Services is a family-owned and operated company with licensed, background-checked and insured electrical, plumbing and HVAC/R technicians. Today, their children Seann Slosson and James Elliott continue their mission of delivering high-quality service to the community. “We are your one-stop shop,” Seann says. “We are the boots on the ground that provide these essential services directly to you. We can keep quality up while keeping your costs and timeline down. This equates to a higher value proposition for our clients.” Historically, the bulk of Circle-E’s business resides in commercial repairs, where its technicians perform everything from electrical, plumbing and heating to refrigeration, pole lights, exterior portering, stainless steel welding and handyman services. Their clientele

includes Fortune 500 companies such as Auto Zone, Olive Garden, Cracker Barrel, Steak ‘n Shake and Red Lobster. During the pandemic, Circle-E grew its residential division so its team could serve more clients in their homes. This timely decision to provide more commercial-quality expertise to homeowners across Dallas-Fort Worth saved hundreds of homes during last February’s “snowpocalypse.” You might remember Seann from “Good Morning Texas,” where he was called upon to advise how to best prevent pipe damage from the freezing temperatures. When you need help winterizing your home with preventive maintenance, a reactive repair when something fails or are ready to modernize your structure with smart features and energy-efficient updates, Circle-E will be there ready, willing and able to get the job done right for you to the benefit of your family’s health and comfort. “The best companies show up for the people,” Seann says. “Circle-E’s team is passionate and blessed with talented tradesmen who enjoy the tangible ways that we make life better for you.”

EMERALD BELLES DIRECTOR APPEARS IN ‘DALLAS COWBOYS CHEERLEADERS: MAKING THE TEAM’ Emerald Belles director Melissa Page made her return to TV last month as a special guest in “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making The Team.” Previously appearing in “America’s Got Talent” alongside the rest of the Emerald Belles, Melissa was invited to AT&T Stadium over the summer during the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders’ audition process and filming for its new season. During her television appearance, Melissa helped the girls by evaluating their kicks, leading them through stretches and talking through their techniques with them. “I felt comfortable working with them because I used to go in the spring once or twice to work on kicks with the girls,” Melissa says. “They were all so gracious and appreciative that I was there, and it was a very fulfilling experience.” You can watch Melissa’s appearance in episode 3 on CMT.com.

FIRST FINANCIAL BANK SOUTHLAKE HOSTS BIG BIKE BUILD Around 50 bikes were rolled out to families in need from First Financial Bank in Southlake last month. Starting in 2017, the Big Bike Build is a philanthropy event First Financial Bank hosts to build bikes for Child Care Associates, a nonprofit organization that assists families in need. Mark Jones, First Financial Bank’s president and CEO, says that around 30 to 40 volunteers came out to the event to help build bikes for the bank’s day of service. Mark says building bikes with the community is an amazing experience that rewards itself every year they host the event. “Most of these kids have never had a bike to call their own,” Mark says. “Watching these kids receive the bikes and seeing the joy in their eyes is always very heartwarming. It reminds us why we do this every year.” 14 DRAGONS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently named 16,000 semifinalists for its 67th annual scholarship program, with 14 of them coming from Carroll ISD. BLUTTERFLY BABY BOUTIQUE RETURNS TO TV After previously seeing one of her dresses on “America’s Got Talent” last month, Blutterfly Baby Boutique owner Bee J Stanley saw another one of her dresses return to TV last month. Sewing little girls’ dresses for over seven years, the Keller seamstress taught herself how to sew through online videos and tutorials. Initially reaching out to “America’s Got Talent” contestant Victory Brinker’s Instagram page to see if she would be interested in making a dress for her, Bee J says she never expected a response. But after they got back to her a couple of weeks later, she had the opportunity to send six gowns to them, with Victory ending up wearing one of them for her “AGT” performance. And she isn’t the only one, with 8-year-old Sophie Fatu wearing yet another one of her dresses on Elmo’s “Not-Too-Late Show” on HBO Max. “This is the biggest thing that has happened to me,” Bee J says. “I'm so proud of all my accomplishments, and I love dressing all the beautiful princesses all over the world.”

RANCHER’S PRIME DELIVERS THE FINEST CUTS OF MEAT FROM SOUTHLAKE

C

arl Ratner believes there’s a story behind every cut of meat. He learned those stories at an early age, working as a ranch hand when he was 10 years old. It was those same childhood experiences, coupled with a lifelong love of a good steak, that inspired him to launch his own direct-toconsumer company in Southlake earlier this year. Rancher’s Prime is a new meat delivery service that mails its products directly from the farm to customers’ tables. Each day finds Carl collaborating with 1,100 ranches across six states to make the mission he cares so deeply about a reality. Whether it’s ribeye steaks or porterhouse chops, shoppers only get the best cuts of meat from Carl. That’s why his business’ name has the word “prime” in it.

FARM LIFE IN FLINT HILLS Born in one of the biggest agricultural states in the nation, Carl grew up in the Flint Hills of Kansas. His family was one of lawyers and doctors, and his grandfather Payne was even the 28th governor of Kansas. This leaves some wondering how in the world Carl found his way to ranching. “I was a little more fortunate growing up,” Carl remarks. “I wasn’t originally the big rancher type.” That all changed when a friend needed an extra field hand to help with his 30,000 head of cattle. He mainly worked summers, cleaning stalls, plowing fields and baling hay. “When I got a little older, I started rounding up the cattle on horseback,” Carl recalls fondly. “They’ll use four-wheelers nowadays, but back then, there was nothing like bringing them in on a horse.” Carl fell in love with the open, carefree life on the farm, roaming the pastures on horseback and quail hunting with his golden retriever when he wasn’t working. Carl says he loved working on the ranches so much, he did it for free. “I never got paid for it one time,” Carl says. “They might buy me lunch once in a while, but it wasn’t about that. It was mainly just about getting out there on the open range, getting on the horses, working the cattle, throwing the hay up and helping out wherever it was needed. It was never about the money. It was all just fun for me.” Carl kept working in the field for the next 10 years of his young life, juggling his responsibilities as both a student and ranch hand through high school and college. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

After pursuing business administration at Wichita State University, Carl decided to make his next big move to Dallas, Texas in 1980. “When I first moved out here, I can remember driving from Dallas to Fort Worth, and the only thing you’d see was empty land, a few buildings here and there and Six Flags in Arlington,” Carl recalls. “Now, it’s just one solid city.” Carl began working in the sales industry and grew his clientele for the next 30 years. Development came and changed Texas before his eyes, but Carl never forgot where he came from. “I’ll always remember Flint Hills fondly,” Carl says. “My greatest memories came from there.” CREATING RANCHER’S PRIME For the past 12 years, Carl has been working as a business development director for a lighting company, selling over $70 million in assets to multifamily developers across the nation. Because his work takes him all over the nation, Carl often entertains clients at some of the country’s best steakhouses. Unfortunately, Carl often found himself unimpressed. “Sometimes your customer might have a great steak,” Carl says. “Sometimes they would need a chainsaw just to cut that leather-textured steak you paid $60 for. I got so dad-gum fed up, because I’m from Kansas. We were meat connoisseurs. We had the best of the best beef out there. To go from that to this was just frustrating.” Eventually, Carl threw caution to the wind and decided to explore cow-sharing because he knew how to get better beef cuts than most high-end restaurateurs. here are several ways to enjoy your favorite music, whether you plug in your headphones or turn up your speakers to full volume. But nothing beats the crisp, clear sounds that come from a classic vinyl player — and few are better than Music Hall’s MMF-9.3 Turntable. The MMF-9.3 Turntable is a belt-driven music player that runs records at two different speeds: 33 and 45 revolutions per minute. Its unique triple-plinth construction isolates the most critical components to reproduce the most vibrant sound possible, including the smooth main ceramic bearing, the mounted coil cartridge and the carbon fiber tonearm, with a carbon stylus tip that follows the groove of a record with stunning precision and

accuracy. And with a base that is dampened and decoupled from the main body, no vibration will get in the way of your record. But it’s not just the sound that is sharp: the MMF-9.3 Turntable’s sleek design is similarly striking. The player is available in both black and walnut finishes, giving it the appearance of either a high-gloss piano or a rustic wood guitar. And you thankfully don’t have to worry about debris getting onto your record — its plastic dust cover helps protect your vinyl while ensuring a clean playback. Whether you are looking for a flawless listening experience or a stylish new musical knickknack, the MMF-9.3 Turntable is one vintage product you won’t want to miss out on.

This Nurse Anesthetist Creates And Curates Heirloom Wooden Toys For Kids

A

nurse anesthetist by day and a business owner by night, Meileilan “Mei” Mattinson started Sharome Toys a little over a year ago with her husband and their daughter, Charlotte. Curating and creating heirloom wooden toys for children, Mei is determined to help kids learn in a fun way while using their imagination. I CURRENTLY LIVE… in Grapevine. We moved here a year ago from Wisconsin. My husband got a job here, and since then, we [have] decided that Texas will be our forever home. I WORK FULL TIME AS… a CRNA and I work Monday to Friday. When I get home, I try to be a mom, and then after that, when everything is settled and my baby goes to bed, that’s where I work on the business and packing orders before I go to bed. It’s not a bad balance at all. WHEN I WAS PREGNANT… I had been researching what kinds of toys I wanted to get. Back then, we lived in a less than 900-square-foot condo and our space was limited. I had to be selective with her toys… I started researching toys and got to know wooden makers around the world. I also tried to connect with a lot of moms who had the same problems as me. That’s where I’m like, ‘You know, there’s a gap in the market [for] toys that kids can play with that doesn’t need to be really huge.’ So then I decided to build [our] online shop. ‘SHAROME’ IS… a combination of my daughter’s first and middle name. Her name is Charlotte Salome. WE STARTED… in August of 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. It was hard because we didn’t know how to reach our customer base [at first], but thinking about it, I think it helped us more because most people’s time [was] at home, so they’re mostly online. That was easier because I was able to communicate with a lot of people. AT FIRST, I WAS TELLING… [customers] to go straight to the wooden maker. So far, our wooden makers are from other countries and, especially during the pandemic, they have to wait three to four months to get the toy. So [I was like], ‘You know what? I’m going to order a bulk of toys and stack it in our house, then I will sell it to the people who are interested and they’ll get it within two to three days.’

38 • NOV 21

OUR TOYS ARE CURATED… and hand-picked from different wooden makers around the world like Poland, Australia, Ukraine, Turkey, Israel and more. They’re all handmade from nontoxic materials. Some of the toys are designed by us, and it’s a lot of trial and error. Our selection of toys is based on our passion [for] open-ended play, [and toys can be] math- and science-centered and nature-inspired. CHARLOTTE, SHE’S OUR… toy tester. Before we put a toy on our website, Charlotte gets to play with it first. We try to see how she acts or how engaged she is with each toy. We also want to check if it passes our standard. QUALITY IS… No. 1 for us. The second is how much play they can get with one toy — like each toy can be played with several ways following a child’s imagination and inquisitive mind. And third is something educational, where a child learns new concepts and skills with each play. MOST OF THE TOYS IN STORES… were overwhelmingly made with plastic. Plastic is not good for the environment or for the health of a child… [because] some chemicals found in other plastic toys can be harmful like phthalates, BPA and others. So we felt like wooden toys were much safer. Also, wooden toys are heirloom toys and can be passed from one child to the next and even to the next generation. I DON’T THINK THIS BUSINESS… is possible without my husband’s help. My husband handles the financial aspects, making sure that we are not going over our budget and keeps an eye on our inventory. He also makes sure that our website is up and running. I do all the packing, the marketing and the social media interaction with our customers. I LOVE MY… customers. They usually send me pictures of their kids playing with the toys. They say their kids are becoming more engaged with the toys and they notice that their kids’ imaginations flourish with the open-ended play.

TOOLS of the TRADE LOCAL CREATIVES COMBINE ART & ENTREPRENEURSHIP BY LIZZY SPANGLER

eing creative can take several different forms. Many of us are amateur creatives, dabbling in artistic hobbies during our pastimes, while others use their creativity for entrepreneurial enterprises. From a soap-maker leaning on her family roots for inspiration to a metalworker making impressive metal magnolias, these local creatives are combining their artistic sides with their entrepreneurial spirit.

CRISTINA FOX | 24TH AVE DESIGNS MOST-USED TOOL: ADOBE PHOTOSHOP WEBSITE: 24THAVEDESIGNS.ETSY.COM

After her son was born, graphic designer Cristina Fox started her small business 24th Ave Designs in 2015. After making wedding invitations for three years, a different request pivoted the direction of Cristina’s business. “I had somebody ask me if I could do a special gift for them, and I did,” Cristina says. “It just started taking off from there with the handwriting.” That special gift was a tea towel emblazoned with a handwritten recipe that she restored. Cristina, who lives in Roanoke, uses programs like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to restore handwritten recipes, letters and notes to be printed on towels and plates, among other things. From well-loved family recipe cards to love letters sent years ago, Cristina can restore nearly anything. “It really depends on how old the image is, but some of [the restorations] can take up to two hours,” Cristina says. Customers send Cristina a scanned image of their keepsake, which she then restores and has printed on the ordered item. “With the family recipe cards, it just brings back memories of people’s holiday seasons or their favorite food that they made with their grandparents or mothers,” Cristina says. “I’ve even had one person [who wrote] a letter to their girlfriend and asked to marry her that way through a canvas.” Cristina says her customers come from all over the country. “I like hearing the stories,” Cristina says. “I’m really close to my family, and I feel like it’s something really important that people can hand down to their kids.”

ELISHA VAN DEVENTER | BOMBSHELL WORKS MOST-USED TOOLS: A WELDING HOOD, OXY-ACETYLENE TORCH AND PLIERS WEBSITE: ETSY.COM/SHOP/BOMBSHELLWORKSHOP

After her son was born in December 2016, Keller resident Elisha Van Deventer decided to take up metalworking, almost immediately working on the concept of metal florals. “I cut every design by hand with sheet metal shears and 26 gauge sheet metal. Each layer was brazed and affixed to a metal rod,” says Elisha, who works full-time for the city of Arlington. “I was learning a brand new skill, and it was exhilarating.” After two years of making custom orders for friends and co-workers, Elisha officially opened Bombshell Works in 2019. While she can make almost anything, metal florals are Elisha’s bread and butter. “I really enjoy gardening, and the design and construction of florals almost seems innate,” Elisha says. “My tagline for Bombshell Works is ‘Your Metal Florist.’ I want my clients to know that I can create nearly any custom bouquet to nearly any scale.” With customers from all around the country and a handful from Europe, Elisha says her best-selling pieces come from her steel magnolia series. “It quite literally is steel molded and welded in the form of a magnolia flower,” Elisha says. “Most of my customers opt for the traditionally painted creamy-white with green leaves, but my favorite version is the tempered blued steel that I clear coat.” With every order she fills, Elisha falls more in love with her craft. “I love metalworking for the endless options it affords me in the creative process,” Elisha says. “I get to play with different metals — not just steel, but copper and brass.”

BETH LAMEY | HOOKED CREATIONS MOST-USED TOOLS: CROCHET HOOKS WEBSITE: HOOKEDCREATIONBYBETH.ETSY.COM

At 5 years old, Beth Lamey learned how to crochet with her great-grandmother Isabel by her side. “I loved my great-grandmother,” Beth says. “She was a great and patient teacher.” The first thing she crocheted was a hot pad that, in her words, was, “all wonky.” “[It was] not square, no even stitches,” Beth says. “But my great-grandmother kept and used it.” Now, nearly 50 years later, Beth still crochets under the moniker Hooked Creations, creating everything from animals to blankets. “I love it,” Beth says. “It never gets boring.” Beth started Hooked Creations in 2018 after her son was diagnosed with a rare medical condition and she herself was diagnosed with breast cancer. “I knew I needed the extra income,” Beth says. “[And] my friends and family had been bugging me to do it for at least 15 years prior.” With customers all over the nation and the world — including Australia and Ireland — making something like a hat can take around two hours, while it can take nearly 50 hours to make a throw blanket. Her favorite items she’s made are the ones her customers still talk about. “[Recently] a guy I made a blanket for three years ago texted me and thanked me and told me hands down it is his favorite,” Beth says. While her full-time job is as a supply chain manager at a telecommunications company, crochet will always have Beth’s heart. “Making something for someone is the best thing ever,” Beth says. “I send a little love, peace and happiness out into the world.”

HEIDY HENKE | HEIDY HENKE DESIGNS MOST-USED TOOLS: FLUSH CUTTERS AND JEWELERS SAW WEBSITE: HEIDYHENKEDESIGNS.ETSY.COM

In 2000, Heidy Henke’s aunt showed her how to string beads together. That sparked the Southlake resident’s love of jewelry-making. “It was challenging and fun,” Heidy says. “I love to learn new things, and there is always something more to learn about gemstones and metalsmithing.” When she initially began jewelry-making, Heidy says her biggest hurdle was finding good resources. “Now there are so many online resources, but in the early 2000s, it was challenging to find more advanced classes and gemstone dealers,” Heidy says. After taking an 18-month-long course on metalsmithing at the Arlington Gem and Mineral Club, Heidy finally felt proficient in her jewelry-making. “It helped fill in some knowledge gaps and built confidence in my metalsmithing skills,” Heidy says. After honing her craft, Heidy officially opened her small business around 10 years ago, making jewelry some of her customers call, “dainty and delicate.” “I decided to treat it as a business so I could continue being a stay-at-home mom,” Heidy says. “The business gives me the flexibility to set my own hours and work around my family’s schedule, which is really nice.” Since opening her business, Heidy has sold jewelry to customers in countries like Russia, Japan and Spain. But most of her customers are local to Dallas-Fort Worth, as Heidy always participates in Southlake Oktoberfest, Carroll Senior High School’s craft show and the Etsy Dallas shows. “At its core, so much about jewelry is positive — it is given as gifts, used to mark special occasions and is worn to express one’s style and personality,” Heidy says. “I love making pretty things, and it is rewarding to be part of life’s celebrations.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

NATALIE BUSH | THE HYGGE SCENTS MOST-USED TOOLS: DIGITAL THERMOMETER AND CUSTOM-MADE WAX MELTING POT WEBSITE: THEHYGGESCENTS.COM

After making an apple-scented candle from a kit her husband bought her, Hurst resident Natalie Bush fell in love with candlemaking and decided to open The Hygge Scents. “It took almost a year for me to figure out which custom scent blends I wanted to include in my line,” Natalie says. “From there, I would experiment. Maybe one needed more rose or another more amber. Then I would pour until I had a candle I thought was ready to give to friends and family.” After a year of developing her candle line through trial and error, Natalie launched The Hygge Scents in March 2021. Since opening, The Hygge Scents has had customers from all over the country. “My favorite experience has been being invited to be a vendor at the Etsy Dallas show, where I was able to sell so many of my candles and sprays to people right here in Texas,” Natalie says. Working full-time as a math and science teacher, Natalie says she loves how candle-making is both an art and a science. “I love to experiment, and I am always looking to learn more,” Natalie says. “Candle-making allowed me to mix that side of myself with art.” And while The Hygge Scents also sells sprays, scrubs and wax melts, candles will always be at the forefront. “I really wanted my final product to be something that showed love in every little detail. I hand-drew each design on the labels and hand-sculpted molds to create a unique top to my candles,” Natalie says. “I feel like these personal touches truly bring the meaning of hygge to each candle I craft.”

DANYAH ARAFAT | BLUE SKY SOAPS LLC MOST-USED TOOLS: TWIN IMMERSION BLENDERS WEBSITE: BLUESKYSOAPS.SHOP

Soap-making runs in Danyah Arafat’s family. Her father, born and raised in the Middle Eastern city of Nablus, worked in his family’s soap factory as a young adult. “I remember visiting the soap factory as a child when we went on a family trip and seeing the open soap vats ready to be filled with oils and lye, the finished soap cakes stacked to the ceiling curing and waiting to be wrapped,” Danyah recalls. She didn’t become reacquainted with soap-making until October 2019, when she went to a soap-making class with a friend at a local brewery, of all places. Then a passing interest, Danyah didn’t pick it up again until after the pandemic hit and she was furloughed from her job. “Family and friends began asking if I would open a shop and sell my soap, so I thought, ‘Why not?’” Danyah says. “That’s how my little company Blue Sky Soaps was born.” Danyah officially launched Blue Sky Soaps LLC in September 2020. Since then, she has been blending soap batter, pouring it into molds and sending the final products to customers all over the state and country. Her family’s soap-making history, combined with being a sixthgeneration Texan on her mother’s side, provides Danyah with the inspiration she uses to make her products. “Blending these two unique parts of me together… just made perfect sense,” Danyah says. “That I was always meant to do this, and that I was quite good at it. I’m carrying on an old family tradition with Texan style.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

ith adventure in her heart, a woman had voyaged the world and became inspired by both the architecture she saw and the food she tried during her travels. Her name was Harper. That story serves as the inspiration for Harper’s, a new restaurant located in Deep Ellum and spearheaded by the hospitality group Milkshake Concepts. “We wanted both the venue and the menu to reflect that [story],” Milkshake Concepts CEO Imran Sheikh says. “We loved that backstory, and of course, it was creative, but it helped give us a why for the restaurant.” Opening in early August, Harper’s menu is influenced by global flavors and international palates. With around 40 dishes on the menu, Imran

says the goal is to ultimately expand to 50 dishes to allow for variety and seasonal menu items. “I think the biggest thing was let’s not fear being a little bit bold in flavors and the presentation whilst maintaining that approachability,” Imran says. After making your way to Harper’s, begin the night with one of its 11 cocktails. The Bye Bye Birdie is made with Grey Goose Le Citron, orange liqueur, cranberry, fresh lime, lemongrass reduction and luster dust while the First Class cocktail features hibiscus, sparkling rose and St. Germain. True to the restaurant’s nature, some of its cocktails are inspired by global cuisine. The Tale Of Two Cities cocktail is made of Teremana Reposado, Madagascar vanilla and Faust caber-

net, while the Barcelona Pickpocket showcases 10-year-old Glenmorangie, Ramazzotti Amaro, housemade truffle honey, lavender bitters and manchego cheese. And the Italian Job comes with Bulleit rye, Cynar aperitif, Carpano Antica and luxardo cherry. After sipping on some cocktails, it’s time to indulge in Harper’s globally-inspired dishes. Start with an appetizer like the Korean-fried cauliflower with Gochujang glaze, sesame and green onion, or the foie gras pot stickers, which come with duck confit, scallion and dried cherry ponzu. Moving on to the main course, worldly diners will take comfort in the seared scallops au poivre with arugula, beech mushrooms, fried leeks and Armagnac peppercorn sauce, or the untraditional tagine chicken with sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese, toasted pine nuts, pearl couscous, fresh herbs and preserved lemon chicken jus. Its seafood offerings are just as extensive, featuring entrees like spicy tuna crispy rice made with big eye tuna, togarashi and wasabi-cilantro vinaigrette, and the red snapper crudo with serrano, blood orange, chili oil and tiny chives. And for diners who want to go all out, Harper’s has platinum osetra caviar on the menu. But having an international palate doesn’t mean eating a heavy meal. Some of the lighter options include the Burmese tea leaf salad, complete with fermented tea leaves, Roma tomatoes, sliced cabbage, yellow split peas, roasted peanuts, crispy garlic and sunflower seeds. Or spring for the classic caesar salad with petite gem romaine, Parmesan panko, Spanish white anchovies and creamy black garlic dressing. Through its menu, Harper’s makes one thing clear: nearly everyone loves a good steak. The restaurant’s steaks and chops selection provides a cut of meat for anyone and any appetite. A lighter cut of meat comes in the form of a 6-ounce Americano filet served with steak sauce, while the hungriest diners can splurge on the 36-ounce Texas wagyu tomahawk. Not one to stray away from well-known and well-loved dishes, Harper’s also has a variety of pizzas to dig into. Diners looking for a timeless pie can order the Margherita pizza, which is made with San Marzano tomatoes, fresh basil, Deep Ellum buffalo mozzarella and smoked mozzarella, while the Mexican street corn pizza comes topped with roasted corn, cotija, hot sauce and lime crema. And no matter the city or country, most people love to end their meal on a sweet note — and Harper’s has a host of delicious desserts waiting to be devoured. The white chocolate cheesecake is complemented with salted almond caramel and guests can peek into the chef’s mind through a curated selection of ice creams and sorbets. For those who love chocolate, The Chocolate Cherry is chocolate ganache, tart cherry compote and cherry blossom creme fraiche, while diners with a craving for something fruity can share the passion fruit creme brulee made with brown sugar crumble, macerated berries and caramelized sugar. “It’s not just about serving a plate of food or a cocktail,” Imran says. “It’s about creating an experience.”

A Restaurant With A Soul

Sky Creek Kitchen + Bar Delivers Delicious Southwestern Flavors Last fall, Sky Creek Kitchen + Bar opened up inside of the Delta Dallas Southlake Hotel to the delight of local foodies. Since then, it has continued to provide great food and service to all its diners. “I want guests to feel like Sky Creek Kitchen + Bar is an extension of their own living room,” executive chef Enam Chowdhury says. Combining influences from the Southwest, Latin America and the low country, Sky Creek Kitchen + Bar’s menu is full of elevated dishes that feel familiar and taste delicious. Start your night off with a luxurious libation like the Sky Creek Margarita, which comes complete with Patrón Silver, Curaço, agave nectar and fresh lime juice, or the Sky Creek Standard, which features Woodford Reserve, Curaço, nocello and angostura bitters. After a cocktail or two, it’s time to dig into Sky Creek’s offerings. One of its starters, the roasted chipotle chicken tortilla soup, is served with diced avocado, queso Oaxaca, grilled elote, smoky tomato relish and corn tortilla strips. Meanwhile, the roasted beets come prepared with Paula’s goat cheese, a watercress-arugula salad and spiced walnuts. “The menu was articulated in conjunction with the father of Southwestern cuisine, Dean Fearing,” Enam says. “The flavors are most representative of what we are trying to achieve here.” After indulging in the appetizers, dive into the Backyard BBQ Chicken, which comes loaded with mashed potatoes, sauteed green beans, braised cipollini onion and apple butter marmalade. For a heartier bite, the ancho chili sorghum-glazed lamb shank is accompanied by creamy jalapeno grits and fried okra. Seafood aficionados will love the Gulf Shrimp Soft Taco, which comes with charred black beans, guacamole, jalapeno jack cheese, roasted tomato salsa and jalapeno crema, while the Crispy Pan-seared Gulf Shore Crab Cake, served with charred sweet chili pepper relish and mustard tarragon sauce, will satisfy anyone’s appetite. And every great meal needs to end with a dessert. Sky Creek’s peanut butter bar features peanut butter and white chocolate mousse, dark chocolate ganache, bacon ice cream and a salted peanut crumble, while the flourless chocolate Mexican cinnamon cake comes complete with mocha-cayenne whipped cream and raspberry. “This is a restaurant where the executive chef goes table to table helping guests navigate the food and wine menu,” Enam says. “This is a restaurant that has a soul and makes sure every single person is taken care of.”

H

is name is Alexander Hamilton, and despite his claim of a million things he hasn’t done, you’ll be thinking about his spirit, his words and his contributions to America for years to come after hearing his story. The Pulitzer Prize-, Grammy Award-, Olivier Awardand 11-time Tony Award-winning production “Hamilton” returns to Music Hall at Fair Park this month, hosted by Dallas Summer Musicals. Join Hamilton, Aaron Burr, the Schuyler sisters, King George and the rest of the talented and diverse cast of characters as they tell the story of America. It’s not a concert, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find audience members not singing along to “Satisfied,” “You’ll Be Back,” “Alexander Hamilton,” “The Story of Tonight,” “What’d I Miss” and “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)” during the show. “Hamilton” is about one of our country’s Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton. He was an immigrant from the British West Indies who rose to fame as George Washington’s righthand man, helped defend and ratify the U.S. Constitution, became the country’s first Secretary of the Treasury, founded

the nation’s financial system, was subject to one of the country’s first political sex scandals and continuously fought for what he believed in until he died. The musical incorporates a blend of rap, hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway to tell this fascinating story, which created a revolutionary moment in theater that has impacted culture, politics and education. Based on the biography “Hamilton” by Ron Chernow, the music and lyrics were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, with direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire. While many have seen the televised production on Disney+, listened to the original Broadway soundtrack too many times to count and practically memorized every line of this amazing musical, seeing “Hamilton” live and in-person is sure to blow everyone away. Don’t throw away your shot to see it in Dallas!

home STYLE Feeling Like Fall

W

ith temperatures cooling and clocks reversing back an hour thanks to daylight saving time ending, autumn is now fully underway. So bring out the pumpkins and leaves and bundle up, because it’s time to get cozy for the fall season.

A CORNUCOPIA OF COLOR

One of the best ways to embody that fall feeling is through color. Bright or muted yellows, oranges, reds and browns permeate a fall atmosphere throughout your house no matter how you decorate. For a minimalist style, getting ready for fall can be as easy as replacing your welcome mat with one that has some fall colors, or replacing the jack-o’-lanterns with some autumnal gourds. For those who like to go all out, replace your regular rugs with ones that have fall flair or change out your wall decor to something that screams autumn.

NO LEAF LEFT BEHIND

It goes without saying that the leaf is an iconic symbol of the fall. No matter how you decorate, some part of your fall makeover should incorporate foliage. Strings of leaf garlands look great above fireplaces, kitchen cabinets or countertops, while leaf-adored pillows and blankets make great accessories for your furniture. Incorporating fall foliage can also be as simple as using leaf-themed mugs or adding a leaf wreath to the front door. However you incorporate your leaves, your fall furnishings look better with it.

FALL INTO COZINESS

The reason why people love fall so much? It celebrates cozy things. From the cool weather that allows for bundling up in blankets to the soups that bring warmth to the season, your fall decor can be as comfortable as you want it to be. Decompress with the fall-scented candles you can burn around the house while resting on an aesthetically pleasing fall-esque throw pillow. A cozy soup can be eaten out of a pumpkin-shaped dish while a pumpkin spiced latte can be sipped out of an autumnal mug. And nothing gets better cozying up on the couch under a fall-themed quilt.

Must-Visit Museums

These Aren’t Your Typical Galleries

hen you think of museums, what usually comes to mind are art galleries, interactive exhibits and historical artifacts that reveal a little bit more about the world we live in. But not all museums are the same. In fact, there are a few that put a unique twist on their collections, making learning fun and exciting for those that come to visit.

Smithsonian National Air And Space Museum | Washington D.C. One of the most visited space museums in the world, the Smithsonian National Air And Space Museum sees around 8 million visitors every year, and for good reason. Since 1946, the National Air

And Space Museum has collected over 60,000 artifacts for its 161,000-square-foot facility. Nearly everything on display in the museum is either an original or an original backup craft, so you know everything you see here is the genuine article. And its exhibits showcase everything in aviation history, from the Wright brothers’ 1903 flyer and the Apollo 11 Command Module to the Lunar Module LM-2. The museum even features a STEM program where students can learn firsthand the wonders of space. And they can apply their lessons inside the Phoebe Waterman Haas Public Observatory, which features a 16inch telescope, to conduct their own astronomical explorations. AirAndSpace.SI.edu

Museo Subacuático de Arte Cancun, Mexico

Submersive in more ways than one, the Museo Subacuático de Arte in Cancun, Mexico is just like any other museum save for one key difference — it’s underwater. Opening in November 2010, the Museo was created to spread awareness about aquatic life and save the coral reefs. Featuring 500 sculptures by six sculptors in three different galleries, Museo’s attractions are submerged between 10 and 20 feet in the ocean beneath the Cancun National Marine Park. To visit the underwater exhibits, guests have to rent scuba gear from Museo just to be able to see them. Guests who are aqua-adverse can reserve a see-through glass-bottom boat that provides a clear view of the exhibits. Whether you enjoy snorkeling, diving or just want to experience art appreciation in a new way, the Museo Subacuático de Arte is both entertaining and helpful for the ocean environment. Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum | Xi’an, China

One of the most ancient collections of artifacts in the world, the Terracotta Army is among the most cherished items at Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum in Xi’an, China. First discovered by farmers in 1974, the Terracotta Army was buried with the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, in 210-209 B.C. Erected to protect the emperor in his afterlife, it took more than 700,000 people and 40 years to craft the ceramic clay army. And amazingly enough, no two look alike, even though the army includes 8,000 soldiers, 670 horses and 130 chariots. The army is so expansive that three vaults are dedicated to its sizable militia. Over 5 million people visit this cultural site every year. TravelChinaGuide.com

Vasa Museum | Stockholm, Sweden

In the 17th century, the 64-gun warship Vasa sank on her maiden voyage across the port of Stockholm in 1628. Nearly 400 years later, the ship was rediscovered and resurrected into a maritime museum in 1990, nested on the coast that sank it many years ago. The 226foot museum has six levels dedicated to the full history of this tremendous titan, from the people who lived on it to the sizable artillery that sank with the ship. Guests are greeted by the ship’s massive figurehead and sterncastle, and 1:10 models portray what life was like on the ship during its early days until its untimely sinking. With over 40,000 original objects exhibited throughout the ship, visitors can see just how careful the museum is to preserve its most sensitive artifacts. Whatever you explore, history comes alive at the Vasa Museum. VasaMuseet.se
