“Vivere una Buona Vita" “Live a Good Life" AM I LIKEABLE?

Sherri Ferretti

How do you want people to look at you? Are you likable? If people don't like you, they're not going to trust you or care about anything you have to say.

A lot of people think that likeability is someone having a good personality. You're either likableor not.But nothing could be further from the truth. Likeability is not personality; it's a person's character. It's your behavior. It's how you choose to relate to other people. Likeability possessesa good attitude and that is a choice you make. You determine if you're likable or not. Do you want to be liked by other people? Here's the big secret: Like them andthey're going to like you. If you don't like people, they're not going to like you. To be likeable you just have to like and care about people. You have to genuinely enjoy them. You have to choose to be interested in others and think less about yourself. What are the attractive attitudes that make someone likeable? How about humility? Would you rather be around someone who is arrogant or someone who is humble? How about cheerfulness? Would you rather be around somebody who's cheerful or grouchy? Don't leave out kindness. There is

no reason why people should not be kind to one another. How about empathy? To feel for someone who is struggling, having a difficult time or is sick. When you're empathetic with someone who is hurtingyou're likable. You're being kind and thoughtful and that makes someone feel comforted. There is no magic wand that changes a person's character. It is your choice to be a likable person who possesses all the quality traits to be a good person. Pick up the bible read some scripture and get to know the Lord. He can transform a not so likeable person into a very likeable person. So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12 And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. Galatians 6:9 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:21 Ciao &God bless, ~Sherri

J. Michael Levesque

Newport Polo’s Amy Rice

She's not your average Polo player.

waited until I finished law school and passed the bar exam before I became a full-fledged member-player three times a week."

Amy G. Rice was born in the Mount Pleasant section of Providence to Ed and Carol Gizzarelli. After graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School, she attended the University of Rhode Island, Salve Regina University, and finally completed her academic career at Suffolk University School of Law in Boston.

Thirteen years later, Amy obviously hasn't lost her joy and competitive spirit. "My son has grown up on the fields," she says. "It's our home away from home," which is luckily, or by design, only one mile away from her house in Portsmouth. If you've never been to a polo match (neither have I until last year), the Newport Polo Series which is played at the Glen Farm in Portsmouth, Rhode Island is one of our State's best kept secrets. I refer to it as a J. Crew Woodstock with horses.

J. Michael Levesque

Not long after graduating, Amy caught the political bug and started a successful governmental career which began on the Portsmouth Town Council, followed by three terms in the Rhode Island House of Representatives representing portions of Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth. Balancing her political responsibilities with her new career in law, a stint as a Rhode Island Deputy Sheriff, and later a span as a staff member to then Governor Lincoln Chafee, Amy is proudest of being "just mom" to now nine-year-old son Stoddard Rice. When you talk with Amy, the conversation always drifts to her true passion: horses. Not the kind that you jump on for a leisurely ride along a well-worn trail, but the kind that fly down a polo field at full gallop to help their riders hit a little white ball through the wooden posts. Amy's passion for horses started in 1997 when she saw a friend getting ready for a horse event. She became curious, started taking riding lessons, and fortuitously "bumped into a guy at a local bar named Dan Keating" who owns and runs Newport Polo. Dan at that time was starting women's polo lessons, so Amy quickly joined the program. Fast forward to 2002. Amy, ready for the next challenge, paid her club "Greens Fee" and became a member of the Newport Polo Club which entitled her to play the "Game of

Kings" three times a week and be eligible for a Competitive Team against other national and international Teams. Asked what caused this new passion for Polo, she said, "I was addicted from the first lesson, but I

This very festive but casual atmosphere includes tailgate parties, sideline tents, dogs chasing frisbees on the field during half-time, women in Churchill Downs style hats, food courts, clothing sales, and a panorama of sponsor banners representing the who's who of sponsors. It's common to see wild fashion among the few thousand spectators, complete with some rocking music and an announcer with a British accent. And, oh yes, thousand pound horses, with four expert riders on each side, thundering down the field and skillfully guiding those horses to hit the little white ball with a long mallet between the posts. There are six periods in a Polo match, lasting 7 minutes each. Each period, called a "Chukka," tests the skills of both the horse and rider. Continued next page

Continued from previous page

It is so intense that players use three horses during the match. In Amy's case it's Reina (her favorite), Lola, Lolita, and Calista to choose from (obviously all mares). At the end of the grueling match, players usually exchange gifts, and classically, to honor the sport that reportedly started in 600BCE, the winning team sprays the losers with champagne. Before that happens though, each team does a "victory lap" around the field doing "high fives" to the appreciative fans. Amy wants to play polo "till I'm 80." She continued, " I love horses. I love the sport. I love the power between my boots." The Newport International Polo Series starts with the Newport Rotary Charity Match on May 30 at 5:00 p.m. and continues every Saturday with the bonus of three Sunday matches in July. (For more information check it out at www.nptpolo.com). I guarantee that you will enjoy the sport, the festive atmosphere of true family fun, and the throwback to a time when families could even bring the dog to the party. For Amy Rice, it's not only her passion, but a chance for a couple hours of forgetting about the legal business, politics, and the challenges of parenthood, all while caring for some of God's most majestic creatures.

March Madness at the Anthony Carnevale Elementary School

The Anthony Carnevale Elementary School, 50 Springfield Street, Providence, RI recently completed its 10th annual March Madness Basketball and Cheerleading Tournament. This tournament is comprised of 4th and 5th grade students, along with faculty, staff, administration and families of ACE community. The March Madness tournament was created over ten years ago by two ACE students who were interested in playing basketball with their peers. The students brought their ideas to the administration where it then took on a life of its own. Instantly the teachers, staff, and administration become involved. The enthusiasm and excitement from everyone involved has made this tournament such a success each year! The foundation of March Madness was based on the total-

families have come to realize that the scoreboard, the trophies, and the winning are not really that important. The players and cheerleaders have shown us that each game has been about more than just points. They are developing a sense of fairness, and integrity, along with fitness and skills. While the students may not recall the score of a game played just two weeks ago- they will remember a humorous incident or who they played with after the game. In fact, at ACE , one of the most satisfying things about this tournament is commitment, team work, good sporting behavior, and having fun with your friends, family, and teachers is the most important reward! Congratulations to all Anthony Carnevale Elementary School March Madness Basketball and Cheerleading members for

ity of a sport experience rather than just playing the game! It was built on sportsmanship; a commitment to being fair, honest, and respectful to both rules, officials, coaches and opponents. Although the March Madness tournament has changed its formate several times over the years, it has always remained committed to providing a valuable learning experience for all students involved.

another excellent tournament. A special thanks to the A.Carnevale School Administrators: Joyce Fitzpatrick, Assistant Principal, and Mari-Ellen Boisclair, Principal, because you always make a difference in the lives of the ACE students!

AT THE MOVIES WITH FRAN SYNER DANNY COLLINS The recent lack of quality, adult oriented films has officially ended at theaters with the arrival of "Danny Collins" a heartfelt comedy/ drama about a wealthy, agingrock star (Al Pacino) who renounces his flagrant, Hollywood lifestyle after receiving an extraordinary gift from his longtime manager/friend(Christopher Plummer). The story, which could have devolved into a schmaltzy portrait of a buffoonish character seeking late life redemption, doesn't; thanks to the talents of Pacino, the competent direction of Dan Fogelman ("Crazy, Stupid Love" and "Cars") and a pitch perfect supporting castthat includes AnnetteBening, Jennifer Garner and Bobby Cannavale. The year is 1971 when the film begins. In a smoked filled office, a very young Danny Collinsgives an interview with an indie music magazine where the reporter comparesDanny to John Lennon and predicts the intense singer/ song writer will be a huge hit. But what nobody could predict at the time was that at some point Lennon would read the interview and respond to Danny in the form of a letter- one that inexplicably he never receives. What's actually more surprising (as the opening credits tell us) "Danny Collins"is "based on a kind of true story, a little bit." Back in the '70's, a British folk singer Steve Tilson gave an interview with a local magazine which was read by Lennon who sent him a letter that wasn't delivered to Tilson until long after Lennon's death. Fastforward to 2014.A Los Angeles concert hall marquee flashes a "Sold Out" sign. Danny, still a hit on the concert circuit four decades later, haspersonally "sold out,"trading upto the usual trappings of success: the Beverly Hills mansion, the drugs, and the inappropriately younger girlfriend. A frog throated,coked- up Danny takes the stage to wild applause of an embarrassingly enthusiastic baby boomer audiencewho sing and sway along with "Hey, Baby Doll," his dreadful Neil Diamond- like mega hit; just one of the many pop tunes that have made him Danny Collins Superstar. Days later, during his lavish birthday party, Danny receives a present fromFrank (Plummer)-

the long lost letter from John Lennon. Frank had stumbled upon it at an auction house while looking for the perfect gift for his friend. The note, hand written by the former Beatle, encourages Danny to "stay true" and not let success ruin his life or art. The message crystalizes something in Danny.Boarding his private plane, he heads to New Jersey, where he finds the son he's never met. Tom, (Cannavale) the offspring from a long ago affair, leads a low key life as a construction worker with his pregnant wife Samantha (a very affecting Garner) and daughter Hope.Although Sam and Hope lean toward embracing Danny, Tom, still hurt by his father's abandonment, questions his sudden return. But Danny doesn't give up, which leads to several emotional and humorous moments in the film. When not mending family fences, Danny charms the awestruck staff at the nearby Hilton where he's set up residence. He starts a flirty relationship with Mary (Bening), the hotel's pretty,

straitlaced manager, not bowled over by Danny's celebrity. Spurred on by the potential romantic relationship, as well as permanently reuniting with his family, Danny dumps the drugs and starts writing his own songs again. Pacino fascinates in this role. It's his best performance in years. Decked out in gaudy suits and spewing outsized charm, the former "Godfather" star nails the showbiz side of Danny Collins, but the actor is at his best when portraying the complex guy underneath the bronze makeup and confident swagger. The supporting cast is terrific, especially Annette Bening, who makes a dowdy character elegant as well as funny and Christopher Plummer, another great actor who elevates a scene just by being in it. Although "Danny Collins" is geared to an older audience, the fine acting, an endearing story anda great soundtrack featuring Lennon's music should appeal to all. Rated R, Running time 106 minutes

DIGITAL FATIGUE: EYE STRAIN AND MIGRAINES

EYE STRAIN

• • • •

Just like the muscles in your body, your eyes can get tired. For the work they do, your eyes contain the strongest muscles in your body. But as strong as they are, they can become strained and fatigued by sitting in front of a computer, under fluorescent lights or in front of a TV for a couple of hours. This is called visual fatigue.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, your eye doctor should be able to help you. WHAT SHOULD I DO? Visual fatigue can be diagnosed by an eye doctor through an eye exam and a discussion regarding your lifestyle and work habits. If you have visual fatigue, your eye doctor can provide you with solutions and, in some cases, special or custom eyeglasses designed to help you combat it.

WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED WITH VISUAL FATIGUE? Today, more and more people are sufDr. Diamante fering from visual fatigue without knowing the cause of their symptoms. Modern work and lifestyle changes have forced us to spend extended hours in close-range activities such as computer work, ebooks, and hand-held gaming. The increased demands of these activities on your eyes can leave

Tired Eyes Neck or Back pain Burning/Stinging eyes Difficulty focusing after extended periods of time

DIGITAL FATIGUE IN KIDS you with uncomfortable and sometimes painful symptoms. For some people, visual fatigue can also lead to reduction in productivity and ability to concentrate, both which may negatively impact your vision health. COMMON SYMPTOMS • Headaches

As the presence of technology increases, so do the chances for your children's vision to worsen. Many kids today are experiencing visual fatigue due to their increased viewing of digital screens, also known as digital fatigue. According to The National Eye Institute, nearsightedness has increased by 66 percent since the 1970s, a problem that is undeniably linked to the usage of video games. Continued on Page 19

Not only are children spending too much time in front of these digital screens, they are sitting too close to the screens as well, leading to visual fatigue. Eye doctors recommend the 20-20-20 rule - take a break once every 20 minutes and focus on something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This can alleviate eyestrain. Spending time outdoors in natural light relaxes the eyes and can substantially relieve visual fatigue as well.

MIGRAINES AND VISION

These triggers lead to a release of inflammatory substances deep inside the brain and around surrounding blood vessels.

Ocular Migraines and the Connection Between Headaches and Eyes

WHO IS AT RISK FOR MIGRAINES?

Migraines can be incapacitating. For those of you who have never experienced a migraine, you're one of the lucky few. Classic migraine sufferers quickly learn that visual symptoms such as wavy lines, flashing dots, and temporary blindness are usually the first sign of a migraine. Migraines not only cause throbbing head pain, but may also include additional symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Additionally, not all migraines are the same. For instance, ocular migraines may present with the same visual symptoms as a classic migraine but without the accompanying headache. WHAT TRIGGERS MIGRAINE SYMPTOMS? While genetics play a major part, other factors can trigger a migraine. Common triggers include:

While migraines are a common neurological condition that affects approximately 20 percent of the population, women are more likely to experience migraines. In fact, women in their twenties or thirties are three times more likely to be ocular migraine victims than men in the same age group. What causes headaches behind the eyes? Another common issue is headaches behind the eyes. Stress, eyestrain, and lack of sleep can lead to this type of headache. Other frequent causes include eye problems such as astigmatism, presbyopia (blurred vision at near after age 40), and far-sightedness. These vision prob-

lems, left uncorrected, can cause habitual squinting and place stress on the eyes. This then leads to tension on the eye muscles, resulting in a headache. HOW TO TREAT MIGRAINES The visual symptoms of ocular migraines are usual ly harmless and resolve on their own within onehalf hour. The associated headache with classic migraines, unfortunately, could last for several hours or even days. Rest is your first course of action. Afterwards, it's best to talk with your primary care physician about migraine treatment and prevention. If you experience unusual vision symptoms, you should contact an ophthalmologist to rule out vision-threatening conditions such as a detached retina. Dr. Diamante is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery (Ophthalmology) at Brown Medical School. His private practice is located in Johnston, RI. www.drdiamante.com

Spring Cleaning Your Wardrobe

By Lynne Diamante never found the perfect marriage to a white ankle length skirt, time to get divorced. Anything that sat on the sidelines of the hanger gang in 2013 and 2014 needs to be cleared out of the current rotation.

As the warmer temperatures finally pop in most regions of the country, the tidy Betty in all of us start to spring forward (yes, pun intended) to straighten up, scrub squeaky clean and otherwise preen our living quarters. You must not stop with the windows, carpets and bed linens however. Spring cleaning must reach into your closet as well.

Louis Vuitton that you wear more often than you wear shoes‌. Time for an upgrade. Significant investment pieces always hold their value and can be resold on reputable vintage online sites or at local high end consignment. In the area surrounding my home town I can think of at least 6 high end consignments that specialize in de-signer purses, jewelry and shoes.

A few quick rules to do a great closet overhaul:

Once you feel light and airy and oh so cleansed from a total closet purge take stock in the basic pieces you may be missing. Every diva fashionista needs at least 2 pairs of perfectly tailored, flattering jeans, a blazer of nude and black, both in a great fabric, a rainbow assortment of quality tank tops, a few reliable little black dresses (preferably by top designers), nude and black pumps, peep toes and sling backs as well as cute wedges, a couple of investment purses (think Chanel and/or Louis Vuitton) and some

1.If you haven't worn it the past 2 consecutive seasons, hike it out, you are never going to wear it. If that beautiful lime green silk blouse just

2. If it doesn't fit now and will probably never fit again, time for splitsville. Just like a bad relationship, if major changes are needed to feel comfortable, get it out of your life. Sure we all hang on to an item or 2 from high school or college as nostalgia, but try to limit these pieces of history to one small sweater box which will pack nicely in an anonymous corner of your closet. 3. Recycle those things which no longer work on you but would be great in other hands. Anything A girl can dream, right? (sigh) that is not worn, ripped or stained is okay. Charity clothing boxes can be found in just about every city and just because you can't slip into those size 2 Guess jeans anymore (which still have the tag) or don't look good in your red business suit because of a hair color change ‌ doesn't mean those items can't find a loving and welcoming closet somewhere else. 4. Turn your higher end items into cash if you are no longer interested! That's right, I'm telling you it's okay to pimp out your purse! If you are tired of the Michael Kors bag you have had photographed a million times at girls night out (because yes it matches EVERY outfit) or the

versatile accessories to name just a few things that must be always on hand. Your newly cleaned closet will have plenty of room to hold these treasures. All born in Panni and wanted to Join!

On the of March, Panni celebrates “La Festa Delle Donne” known as the “Woman’s Feast” This is a day dedicated to all the women. The women receive a flower called the Mimosa that represents the feast. In the evening most of the Italian ladies hang out together to have fun and spend time together. They would usually go out to restaurants and cafés. In The Rucci’s own restaurant they hosted 40 women who came along with their children. They ate good food, and they sang and danced. At the end of the evening they ate the typical cake of this day called “Torta Paradiso” AKA Paradise Cake.

Sister City: Johnston, RI - Panni Foggia, Italy This will be an historical event taking place at the beginning of July this year. Documents have already been drawn up and submitted to the Town of Johnston. The Assistant Mayor from Panni has already visited last year and now this year we are inviting him back for this cultural event. This all began two years ago, when Louis J. Spremulli visited Panni, Foggia representing the Pannese Society of Providence. Presently the society has 60 members’ men and women from all over the world. Louis met with Mayor Polisena and asked if he would be interested in Sister City. Johnston, RI being the number one Italian community in Rhode Island, made this a perfect match. Mayor Polisena was honored and accepted to be a Sister City. This event will be sponsored by the Pannese Society from Providence and will entail a dinner and cultural meeting with the signing of International documents. There is a committee being formed to plan this event and we hope to get donations from Rhode Island Italian Organizations to support our plans. This unification will be focused on creating direct communication between these two towns from different parts of the world. The Pannese Society is working as a mediator to connect both towns regarding cultural, educational, municipalities and tourism. Both Towns will prosper with learning about how each culture is operating in their current society. Shortly a date and time will be set aside for this event and the public will be invited. We will be inviting some very well-known Italian Icons as guest speakers. Please watch the Italian Echo for tickets in the following issues.

Pannese Social Media The Society has moved forward with new technology for communication around the world. We are using skype sessions with Panni and webinars for our own internal meetings. We have upgraded our Facebook page with the help of new interns. Stephen Russo is now upgrading with Wikipedia as another source for communication and genealogy.

What’s going on in Panni, Foggia? On the Eve of Easter, many people go to Mass which starts at 11:30. The celebration starts with the blessing of the fire which takes place outside the church then everyone lights a candle. Everybody then enters the church and there is a blessing of the water. The Mass continues with many readings taking place. During this mass usually babies are baptized. On Sunday Morning the mass is celebrated at 11:00. Families then get together and have their Easter dinner between 1:00 – 1:30. The Easter dinner usually consists of lasagna or fresh pasta. The people then eat grilled or baked lamb along with potatoes and salad. At the end everyone eats the “Pastiera”, a typical Easter cake made with ricotta. Some people buy the “Colomba” which is something like a cake that is in the shape of a dove. On Easter children open big chocolate eggs and find surprises hidden inside. Children also recite Easter poems in which they learned in school.

The Art and Soul of Reiki Living in the Material World, Part VII In the previous six articles, I wrote about simple yet effective ways to work towards a peaceful and Zen existence. Topics covered included de-cluttering our lives physically as well as mentally, finding joy in what we do, living a life for ourselves, taking care of ourselves energetically, and finally, the concept that we are not our bodies or the spiritual aspects of being a human being. The key ingredient to creating a peaceful life is our connection to a higher being. I want to relay and share what I have learned in a way that is completely non-denominational and free of any organized religion. What I will suggest withDoreen Maura L. in this article, is www.artandsoulprovidence.com simply my own learning from decades of searching for truth within my own spiritual growth. It is not meant to deny or endorse any specific religion or belief. When we participate in many spiritual practices such as meditation, prayer, positive affirmations, loving one another, helping others throughorganizations that promote peace, and so forth, we are participating in the act of connecting to a higher power. These quieter and more private activities can become the most powerful way to connect to a higher being or God. In our culture, an overwhelming percentage of people believe in God.In other cultures around the world, and within dozens of other traditions and religions, most people do believe in a higher power; although they may call that being something other than God. Some traditionsmay not focus on Jesus or the Holy Spirit, such as Buddhism, yet the followers are still connecting to a Divine source, a higher power. In terms of our connection to our God; what we call our God or what we call our religion or how

we decorate our buildings that we call our churches, has little to do with the entire point of being connected to the Source. Many organized religions have traditions and customs that were added by humans over the course of many centuries. Many of these customs become part of our family traditions and become wonderful celebrations and joyous opportunities to connect with one another. However, this is not what I am trying to communicate when I write about connecting to the Source. When we connect to God, we become one with God, and nothing else matters. It is through the surrender of our earthly control over everything and our direct connection to the Divine, that we truly experience the true meaning of peace. If we are truly peaceful in our hearts, there is never room for fear, jealousy, worry, stress, or anything that we create here on this earthly plane. When we truly are connected to God, the trust that is created with that powerful connection, in its purest form, would eliminate all the other perceived problems in our lives. This is a concept that is very difficult to imagine for some and even more of a challenge to achieve. For me, it means changing many aspects of myself, including how I react to and perceive much of what is around me in my life. Imagine if you truly believed that everything that occurred in your life was only because it was best for you. Imagine the

peace that idea would bring into your life. For me, the most powerful and effective written documentations of all of these concepts and ideas is A Course in Miracles. This book states that "The journey to God is merely the reawakening of the knowledge of where you are always, and what you are forever." Created by the Foundation for Inner Peace, this book was a collaborate effort, not contributed to one person. In the wake of recent violence around our country it is more important than ever to find true peace within ourselves. The truth is that creating, or rather re-creating ourselves so that we are peace, is the only possible way to collectively change the world. We must have compassion for everyone. We must have empathy for everyone. We must find ways to let go. This all means that we have to change ourselves first. Imagine a world where only God was real. Everything else here that we created is an illusion. This includes all conflict, hatred, judgement, control, and all our beliefs and possessions. Imagine that all of it werean illusion. Imagine that the only thing that existed in truth was God, along with you and everyone else on earth, together. Imagine that all of us are a part of God. If you can imagine this, then you may be able to let go of everything that you feel the need to fight for in your life. You may be able to find a true sense of Peace. "Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God." - Foundation for Inner Peace, A Course in Miracles

Sixty years ago on the 12th of April, a vaccine developed by Jonas Salk proved to be safe and effective in protecting children against polio. This gave the world one of the critical tools needed to begin the fight against the crippling disease. Since then, the polio program has been one of the most successful public health programs in history, reducing polio cases reduced by 99%. Now, the final 1% is tantalizingly within reach.

As we commemorate Jonas Salk's remarkable achievement, the vaccine that began this journey - the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) - is playing an important role in the final steps towards eradication, and ensuring that the virus will never be able to return. An incurable threat for thousands of years, polio was a leading cause of disability, arriving without warn-ing and causing lifelong paralysis. Against the backdrop of increasingly devastating out-breaks in the United States, Jonas Salk was born in 1914. In 1916 alone, over 27 000 people were paralyzed and 6 000 killed in America. In 1928, with ever-higher numbers of cases, iron lungs were introduced to help patients breathe, keeping many alive who would have died only years before. Yet, in many cases, this restricted otherwise healthy people to a life of reliance on these machines. The discovery that changed the world In 1908, Dr Karl Landsteiner discovered that polio is caused by a virus. This marked the start of several decades during which understanding of the disease began to grow, setting the stage for scientists to begin to work on a way to pre-vent it. At the New York University School of Medicine in 1938, Dr Jonas Salk began to work on an influenza vaccine. Here he learned techniques that would later enabled him to develop the inactivated polio vaccine at the virus research program he launched at the Uni-versity of Pittsburgh in 1947. By 1952, Salk and his colleagues announced that they had developed an injectable vaccine against polio.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention joined Rotary to launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). Since then, the GPEI has supported governments to end transmission of polio globally. The combination of the oral polio vaccine and IPV led to the eradication of polio in the Americas, in the Western Pacific, and Europe.

Following small trials in the Pittsburgh area of the United States, Canada, the US and Finland launched trials on an unprecedented scale, involving 1.8 million children. Finally, in April 1955, Salk's vaccine was declared "safe, effective and potent." By 1957, cases in America had dropped by almost 90%, and by 1979, stopped altogether. With the development of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) by Dr Albert Sabin in 1961, the world was given the tools to both stop outbreaks, and strengthens and builds immunity to ensure that children could grow up without the threat of polio. A global focus despite the dramatic impact of the vaccine in America, polio continued to affect some 350,000 people in 125 countries around the world. In 1988, driven by Rotary In-ternational who had become crucial advocates in the fight against polio, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S.

With the declaration of the WHO's South-East Asia Region as polio-free in 2014, 80% of the world's populations now live in polio-free regions - a public health miles-tone that was unimaginable when Salk first began his work on vaccines. The role of the in-activated polio vaccine today Now, on 12 April 2015, as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the introduction of Salk's IPV we are reminded of more than 10 million people walking today who would otherwise have been paralyzed by polio. In the past six months, just two countries have reported cases of wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. As a polio-free world comes into sharper focus, Salk's vaccine is once again demonstrating its importance. In 2015, 120 countries are introducing his IPV into their routine immunization systems (some countries, like Nigeria, already have). With the phased removal of OPV crucial in order to completely eradicate all polioviruses, reaching all children with IPV will be essential in securing the gains made against polio for future generations. It’s Always Summer At Iggy’s

Doughboys, clam cakes and red "chowdah" can be found at Iggy's, a Rhode Island favorite, located in Oakland Beach. David Gravino, owner, with his sister Maryanne Soares, re-opened this family-run operation, once known as Gus's in 1989.

BY ELIZABETH D’UVA A scenic area with spectacular views of the bay, make the dining room, with its quaint booths, a special place to visit. The walls are adorned with memorabilia, pictures and awards describing the history of Iggy's throughout the years. The menu, listed at the top of the dining room has something for everyone. Seafood, burgers, sandwiches and salads are listed. Iggy's even has their own bottled soda including raspberry-lime and root beer. We ordered a number of items from the menu. While waiting, a very proud owner, David Gravino, showed us his efficient 1400 sq. ft. kitchen. It was so interesting to see the large steam kettles cooking the chowders and all the dough rising under cloths in his spotless kitchen. Our food arrived cooked to golden brown perfection. We ordered the most popular selections which included clam cakes, chowder, stuffed quahogs, doughboys and fish and chips. Each portion was very generous, especially the fish and chips. David has all his platters come with french fries, cole slaw, chowder or a side

We tried both the red and white chowder which contained large pieces of clams and potatoes all swirling in a very tasty broth. We thought dipping the clam-cake in the red chowder was heavenly. It reminded us of a warm summer day. The fish and chips, market priced at $9.99 was a feast for the palette. David informed us that the fish he uses was long-lined cod and he buys only the best, refusing to sacrifice on quality. The fish was truly white and flaky, melting on my tongue, cooked to absolute perfection. The portion was so surprisingly generous for the price. The stuffed quahogs were the pièce de résistance.

The Versatile Sport Coat

MAY 2015

Sport coats have been an enigma to me for as long as I have been in retail. When I grew up many moons ago, sport coats were as much a major part of a man's wardrobe as was a suit. When a guy went out on a Saturday night he had on either a suit or a sport coat. Those were the choices. I remember when I went out in the summertime I had a madras and a seersucker sport coat. When it came to navy blazers, I had two, a tropical wool and a flannel for the winter.

Roger Gross Owner of Franklin Rogers

I was especially found of my winter sport coats. I had a herringbone Norfolk Jacket, as well as a great looking Harris tweed. I also had a sharp looking loden color blazer with brass buttons. Sport coats were worn as a step down from suits.

Guys wore dress shirts and ties with sport coats., worsted wool or flannel pants in the winter, and tropical wool or cotton paints in the summer. Ever since dressing up on a Saturday night has gone out of style, the sport coat market had been depressed, until now. Along with the change in shape, fabric and style of suits, sport coats have undergone a huge change, resulting in a significant increase of interest and business.

www.suitstoreri.com

The new young designers that we carry have come up with a trimmed down silhouette with narrower shoulders, shorter length, trimmer arms, and more

muted fabrics. The new young designers have taken the sport coat out of the country club and into the board room. The styles are a little more dressy than they have been, yet they are very versatile in that they can be worn with dress slacks as well as jeans. Some of our suppliers have redesigned there product by adding a partially lined, or an entirely unlined jacket into their mix. These jackets are easily dressed up as well as dressed down. If your sport coats are long of tooth, and you are looking for a more modern interpretation of an old standard, come on in and check out the new Sport Coat looks. It just might be a great move.

JACKIE POULIOS Zuccolo Director

Zuccolo Boys Win City Basketball Championship! On Saturday, April 18th, the Zuccolo Recreation Center Boys 14 & Under Basketball captured the City Basketball Championship in the Marvin Barnes Division by defeating the Davey Lopes Recreation Center by a score of 57-44 at Alumni Hall on the Providence College campus. Zuccolo started strong right out of the locker room in the first half by jumping out to a 22- 8 lead behind 2 three pointers by Elijah Perry and 1 by Manny Roman. Perry had 13 first half points, and Roman had 9 en route to a 3011 lead as the half ended. Zuccolo led by double digits for most of the game until Davey Lopes cut the lead to 7 midway through the 4 quarter. However, Roman scored 16 of his game high 25 points in that second half as Zuccolo pulled away again late in the fourth quarter. The key to the Zuccolo stretch run was Roman hitting 10 out of 11 free throws late in the game. Perry finished with 13 points. Eric Palmer, a force on defense and on the boards all game, finished with 11 points. Tyriq Lowe-Torres (6pts.) and Jonathan Duprey (4pts.) were also big contributers on the boards and on defense to help clinch the victory. Led by Head Coach Gary DiSarro along with Assistant Coaches Joe Cerbo, and Howard Soares, the 2015 14 & Under Team took a different route to the Championship this season as they were the first Zuccolo team in recent history to be crowned as the 2015 Regular Season Division Champions. They finished with an 11-2 Divisional record and a 14-2 overall record. This year saw an amazing turn around in the 14 & Under Division for the Zuccolo boys as they finished in last place in 2014 with an 0-15 record! Volunteer Coach DiSarro has now coached four different teams to the City Championship Title since 2011. A special thank you goes out to the Providence Recreation Department, our staff, volunteers, coaches, alumni, sponsors, parents, friends, fans and players for making 2015 a very memorable season!!

TIPS FOR GRANDPARENTS HELPING TO RAISE CHILDREN • Ankle Knee Supports • Back Supports • Exercise P roducts • W rist & Night Splints • Hot & Cold Therapy • Com pression Stockings • D iabetic Shoes & Socks

As retirement age approaches, many older adults envision themselves downsizing and moving to a quaint community to enjoy their golden years in as relaxing a fashion as possible. However, for a growing number of seniors, their retirement years are being spent helping to raise grandchildren. United States Census data from 2010 indicates 4.9 million American children are being raised solely by their grandparents. CanGrads, a National Kinship Support organization, says approximately 62,500 children are being raised by grandparents and other family in Canada. Many grandparents provide part-time care when their older children have to move back home with their families, as roughly 13 million children are now living in homes with their grandparents. Although being raised by grandparents may not be the ideal situation for all parties involved, such situations are a necessity for many families. Seniors who are once again thrown into the caregiver arena may need a crash course in childcare or a few pointers on parenting in the modern age. ¡ Get the right equipment. Children certainly require a lot of gear, more than grandparents likely used when raising their own children. Certain safety requirements are in place to safeguard young children, and that often means investing in new cribs, car seats, high chairs, and other items. Grandparents should resist the temptation to use old items they may have kept in storage, as such items may no longer be safe and could put grandchildren at risk for injury. ¡ Gather important documents. Grandparents should keep pertinent documents in one easily accessible place in their homes should an emergency arise. These include birth certificates, health immunization records, death certificates (if the child's parents are deceased), dental records, school papers, citizenship papers, and proof of income and assets. ¡ Speak with an attorney. Lawyers can help grandparents wade through legal arrangements, such as filing for custody, guardianship or adoption. Options vary depending on where petitioners live, but lawyers can provide peace of mind to grandparents concerned about their grandkids' futures.

¡ Investigate financial assistance. Seniors may not earn the income they once did and may be on assistance programs or living off of retirement savings. Grandparents who find themselves caring for a child may be eligible for financial assistance. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families is a joint federal and state program that can provide need-based financial assistance. The AARP or the organization GrandFamilies may be able to put grandparents in touch with financial advisors in their areas. ¡ Contact schools and daycare centers. School-aged children will need to be enrolled in school. Grandparents should contact the department of education where they live to learn about local school systems, especially when grandkids are moving in with their grandparents. Some grandparents can qualify for free or low-cost daycare, and such programs can be discussed with local Social Services offices. Enrollment in school or daycare can provide grandparents with much-needed free time during the day. ¡ Find emotional support. Taking care of grandchildren is a full-time job. At times, grandparents may feel stressed or out of sorts. Having a strong support system available can help grandparents work through the peaks and valleys of this new and unexpected stage in life. Church- or community center-based counseling services may be available. Grandparents also can check with their healthcare providers to determine if counseling or therapy sessions are covered under their plans. Caring for grandchildren is a lifechanging event. Although it can be fulfilling, it also requires a lot of energy and commitment. But grandparents needn't go it alone, as there are numerous resources available to seniors who suddenly find themselves caring for their grandchildren. Probiotics

Diane Boudreau AFPA CERTIFIED NUTRITION/WELLNESS CONSULTANT

What are probiotics/prebiotics...Why are probiotics important for your health...How can you add probiotics to your diet…It is important to know the benefits of probiotics and how to include them in your daily health program.

Bifidobacterium There are approximately 30 species of bifidobacterium; they make up about 90% of the healthy bacteria in the colon. They appear in the intestinal tract within days of birth, especially in breast-feed infants.

What are probiotics? Probiotics are organisms such as bacteria and yeast. More than 500 different types of bacteria live in our digestive system. They keep the digestive system healthy and assist in digesting food, synthesizing vitamins and nutrients, metabolizing some medications, and help the immune system.

Research Researchers believe that some digestive disorders happen when the balance of "good bacteria" in the intestines becomes disturbed. The correct balance between "good bacteria" and "bad bacteria" is necessary for optimal health. Medication, diet, disease, antibiotic use, and environment can upset that balance.

When the digestive tract is healthy, it eliminates things that can damage it, such as harmful bacteria, toxins, chemicals, and other waste products. The digestive tract also absorbs nutrients from food and water and delivers them to the cells where they are needed. Probiotics are in fermented foods with active live cultures such as yogurt and Kefir. They are also available in liquid, chewable, and capsule form. There are many different strains of probiotics, but the most common today are lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. Lactobacillus There are more than 50 species of lactobacillus, found naturally in the digestive, urinary, and genital systems. Fermented foods like yogurt and dietary supplements contain these bacteria.

L’Arte Della Cucina Napoletana

Are probiotics safe? Probiotics are safe and cause very few side effects. It is important to note that probiotics may be dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, children, elderly people and people with serious illnesses. Always consult a physician before using probiotics. What foods contain probiotics? There are many foods claiming to provide probiotics, fermented dairy products are one, but there is no guarantee that they contain the amounts needed for health benefits. You have to see if the manufacture has done studies to support their claims. Other foods containing probiotics are Polish Sauerkraut, fermented vegetables and pickles, Kefir, yogurt, Japanese tempeh or natto (fermented soy), aged cheese like parmesan, cheddar and Gouda. Taking probiotics For microbes to be considered probiotic, they have to meet certain requirements: 1. The microbe must be alive when administered 2. The microbe must be known to have a health benefit 3. The microbe "must be administered at levels to confer a health benefit" It is important to know the conditions of storage, the shelf life, the potency (#of viable bacteria per dose), and purity (presence of contamination or in-effective bacteria) of the product.

TM

There is a huge variety of probiotics to choose from so it is important to determine what condition you want to treat with probiotics. It is necessary for you to do your own research and consult your physician to decide which probiotic supplement will provide the most benefit. This site might help you discern what you need, (http://www.usprobiotics.org/). What are Prebiotics? Prebiotics are the superstar foods, nondigestible (soluble fiber) carbohydrates that act as food for probiotics. Prebiotics are found in certain fats, tea, herbs and spices, red wine, and dark chocolate. The best known prebiotic is dietary fiber. Our body cannot digest fiber and turn it into fuel but probiotic microbes thrive on it. Probiotics are found in foods such as yogurt and sauerkraut while prebiotics are found in whole grains, bananas, onions, garlic, honey and artichokes. The main sources are fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Prebiotics are food for our flora, the living organisms that contribute to our health and well-being.

If you're out of balance you can develop dysbiosis, an overgrowth of "bad bacteria" and yeast. Dysbiosis has been linked to yeast infections, irritable bowel syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis. A common cause of dysbiosis is antibiotic treatment that kills the healthy bacteria in your gut. Do we really need Probiotics? It depends on whom you follow for nutrition and health advice. There are real proponents of adding probiotic supplements daily and there are those who believe that prebiotics are the way to optimum health.I usually add a powdered probiotic or Kombucha every other day to my smoothie/juice drink. I personally tend to be in the prebiotic camp myself and aim to eat a majority of raw whole foods daily for good health. Then there are those who believe that a prebiotic diet and probiotic supplements administered equally is the best way. Experiment and see what works for you. The SAFE And The SERIOUS

It's called The SAFE And The SERIOUS and it was first created in Rhode Island and launched at car and truck shows, cruise nights and racing events as a creative effort to encourage kids, teens and families to Drive Safely and Buckle Up! on our roadways. The SAFE And The SERIOUS Founder and Creative Director, Jim Weicherding of Burrillville, Rhode Island, began his unique and creative campaign efforts at car and truck shows, cruise nights and racing events across the state of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut with child passenger safety publication handouts, posters, hand painted billboards and full color graphic banners featuring classic cars and trucks along with the safety message reminder, BUCKLE UP! Since the popular traffic safety campaign was developed in 2003, a variety of traffic safety messages such as Drive Now...Text Later, including Drive Safe...Drive Serious themes, have been featured with numerous other visual applications such as posters, banners and full color hand painted billboards going on display at high school parking lot exits and out in front of police and fire departments across three New England states, RI, CT and Massachusetts. The hopes of Jim's creative visuals include getting teenagers and young adults to wear seatbelts and drive carefully by displaying these full color visuals inside and outside at the parking lot exits of the student's high school and reduce traffic related injuries and death due to excessive speeds, reckless driving and not being properly restrained in a moving vehicle. Jim has recently been asked to create texting safety images for teens and young adults by law enforcement agencies across the region. Jim travels around the state and region with his mobile traffic safety BUCKLE UP! reminder banners he displays on the sides of his pick-up truck as shown in the photo section of this page. He travels as far away as Cape Cod where his The SAFE And The SERIOUS "BUCKLE UP" reminder banners and posters are dispalyed at popular retail locations along busy travelled roadways from Bourne to Wellfleet, Cape Cod. Car shows and race tracks are the perfect venue for reaching out to kids, teens and families about traffic safety because everyone arriving and then leaving the events are driving to and from that location. With a truck full of handouts for kids featuring child passenger safety materials and teen related materials for safe driving and wearing seatbelts, Jim is able to reach out to a very large audience with his creative public safety efforts. He hopes to encourage more drivers and passengers to wear their seatbelts and drive safely due to a visual reminder in the faces and minds of people traveling on the road.

Jim has received many local, state and federal honors and awards over the past few years while recently receiving a Citizen Service Medal from the state of Rhode Island and a Citizen Service Award from the state's law enforcement agencies and police departments. He received these medals, awards and honors because of his creative and dedicated efforts to help keep kids, teens and families safer on our roadways every day of the year. Many RI., CT. and Massachusetts Police Department web

sites feature Jim's The SAFE And The SERIOUS Campaign materials for kids available as coloring cartoons and coloring pages they can print out and color in at home, or in their classrooms. Kids everywhere absolutely love his cartoon characters and coloring cartoons and can be seen coloring them in at car shows and racing events across RI and the region throughout the year. The SAFE And The SERIOUS Campaign has received many letters of support and letters of endorsement from local and state police along with letters of support and letters of endorsement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA), RI DOT Office on Highway Safety, RI Hospital, Lifespan, Hasbro Children's Hospital, CDC of Washington, DC,, Safe Kids USA and Safe Kids Worldwide also located in Washington, DC. Recent TSATS Partners for 2015, include the MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association), a non-profit organization that will take the TSATS Award-Winning Graphics & Messages to their more than 250,000 Athletic Student Members in nearly 400 Massachusetts Communities statewide, and reaching millions of other middle school and high school students in the process with these effective daily visual traffic safety reminders on display in their schools as TSATS Posters and outside their schools as TSATS Full Color Banners. TSATS Educational Pamphlets and Booklets are being created and published by Jim Weicherding as handout materials explaining

the consequences that come from poor driving decisions and reckless driving and will be distributed to students throughout the 2015 - 2016 school year. TSATS Banners will also be on display at all of the MIAA Sporting Events across the state of Massachusetts during the course of the year. BUILDING SISTER CITIES ACROSS THE GLOBE Sunday, March 22, 2015 Mayor Pasquale Ciruolo from Panni, Foggia, Italy and Mayor Joseph Polisena from the Town of Johnston communicated by Skype in regards to the Sister City Program they are working on through the Pannese Society of Providence. The Pannese Society had a special meeting set for this date. We had members attend from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. The meeting was called to order at 1:30 pm by President Joseph Spremulli and one of their first speakers was Senator Frank Ciccone, who presented a $1,000.00 check to the Society to support various cultural programs. Mayor Joseph Polisena participated with a skype session to Panni, Foggia, Italy and the following points were discussed. x Sister City documents were being prepared and will presented to Johnston by April 2015 x The Mayor from Panni, Foggia was invited to Johnston, RI for the official signing. x Both towns will have committees in place to work on specific cultural ideas. The meeting continued with regular business regarding their agenda with ideas of moving forward with two areas of using the wide world web. Two new interns were responsible for these programs, Steve Sheeky and Jerrimiah Rainille. Facebook and Webinar Communication were introduced to help move forward with event planning and online meetings The fact remains that Facebook is the top area of social media and Webinar software is the best way to communicate with committees as a group anywhere on the web. Currently the Pannese Society membership has increased to over 60 members from 30 last year and still climbing. We are a 501c3 non-profit with a focus on preserving Italian Heritage. We presently have 26 sponsors and working on special grants to benefit the community and our members. Some of our planned functions are a trip to Ellis Island, Italian Classes, Children’s Xmas Party, Mass and Dinner for Annual Feast. One thing to remember is that our society sponsors events for the public to participate as well, you do not have to be a member. We are always looking for new members and sponsors. Louis J. One touch of nature makes the whole world kin. Shakespeare able to direct you to potential vendors. I know the RI Plant Society often has a exhibit at the annual expo in Kingston, RI. I have seen D.cymosa in a West Virginia nursery catalogue. It is also perennial and could be easily shipped. It likes cooler shady areas and is hardy from zones 4 to 7. Its common name is Skelton Flower. It is related to Umbrella plant, D.cymosa and they are in the Mayapple family.

QUESTION: We have seen this white flower that looks like a dogwood but cupped. It grows about a foot and a half. The flower turns to opaque when it rains. Do you know what it is and where can we buy it? Jean, Norwich, CT

43 Years in Business!

ANSWER: Diphyllieia grayi can be bought through catalogues. I doubt that you will find it at retail here in New England. It is a woodland plant found mostly in the southeast. Wild plant societies might be

ANSWER: Pear tree tend to grow right straight up. Dwarf varieties are readily available. Older specie can be pruned like apple trees. In Japan they have been doing this for centuries. You need to prune the tree on the inside and cut the ends of the branches. This will foster more spreading. Any branches that go straight up must be removed. This will require annual pruning to maintain its shape. You might consider espalier trees on a wall. This usually requires a lot of disbudding and pruning each year.

In either case , you will have larger, sweeter, nonpareil pears. QUESTION: My wife started spraying our apple trees with a soluble fertilizer this year. We had black spots on the fruit but not the leaves this past year. We use a dormant oil spray every year. What can we do? Jim, Elizabeth City, NC ANSWER: Scab, fly speck or sooty blotch are best avoided with a program that includes dormant oil and Bordeaux Mix. As the bud swells in the spring, you can apply the first spray. A second spray is administered after petal fall with two more subsequent sprays. Follow directions on the label. You could also put out sticky, red maggot balls to discourage further egg laying by the flies. A soapy solution will help keep away most insects with the help of the red balls. I do not like to use soluble fertilizers on fruit and landscape material. The growth is too quick and requires constant follow up. Do not fertilize again for two years. Wash all the fruit and peel all fruit with black spots.

QUESTION: Why do public parks plant Castor beans? I understand that the bean is very poisonous to man and animals. Jim, Gardener, MA ANSWER: There are many plants like Datura and Castor that are truly beautiful but fatal if ingested in various amounts. Actually there are hundreds that are toxic, if eaten. Most animals know better than to put these plants into their mouths. Little children have to be taught not to put any foreign object in their bodies. Fortunately, the prickly cover of the seed pod on Castor bean would discourage any sane person from trying. Visit themagicgarden.com/library for more than a thousand lawn and garden Q&A. You can purchase Mort’s book, "A Face Made for Radio". This autobiography is $11.95 per copy including S&H. It chronicles his first 25 years and the history of radio. Brandi’s Corner Spring brings good news and bad news

Ooh! Take a long sniff… Do you smell that? It's SPRING!

Please include the pet’s name, and a brief caption for photo including your location.

The days of hunkering down and watching the snow fall, days of doing my business in temperatures humans wouldn't even consider -- they are all behind us. Now I'm finding toys in my back yard that were buried all winter. Unfortunately, along with the daffodils comes danger. You know what I'm talking about. Ticks! Fleas! Ick. Good thing I got a whiff of them early and reminded my dad to apply my monthly flea and tick preventative. Now I'm a walking bug repellent, forcing thebad guys to look elsewhere for a meal!

In addition toflea and tick treatments, I also make sure I get vaccinated against Lyme disease and Leptospirosis when I go see my vet. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease to dogs in as little as 24 hours.Symptoms rangefrom joint pain, swelling, lethargy and fever to more severe symptoms such as kidney or nervous system impacts. Lyme is difficult to treat, especially if it's not caught early. Leptospirosis is a lesser known bacteria that I could catch on my spring outings if I wasn't vaccinated. It's usually found in stagnant water and can get in through my skin. Yuck! Not only would it make me very, very sick, but unlike most diseases I get, I can pass it tohumans. Along with flea and tick treatments, you should give your buddy those yummy heart worm preventative chews or tablets each month (if your dog doesn't find them yummy, insert them into cheese - instant gobble time). Also ask your vet for a vaccine recommendation. Remember, the bark of the shot is better than the bite of one of these nasty diseases. See you next month in Brandi's corner.

The Animal’s Guardian BY

Judy Salvadore

on his vaccinations. Did you know that orange cats are generally male cats?

CATS, CATS, CATS...!

Judy Salvadore The Animal’s Guardian coat color.

Cat adoptions have slowed over the winter at the Warwick Animal Shelter and we have some gorgeous felines waiting for homes. If you are looking for an orange, black cat or combination, come see us as we have many beautiful "purrsonalites" for adoption. Coincidentally these cats are all about 5 years old and each has a trait to accompany their

Larry, or as I like to call him, Sir Larry the Lion, also has a terrible story. Larry's owners moved to Arizona and abandoned him in their neighborhood to fend for himself. Just left him! We just don't understand how people buy into the myth that cats can survive outside on their own: they can't! Coyotes, foxes and birds of prey all live in Warwick and will kill cats (and small dogs) for food, never mind being hit by a car or starving to death. Larry is a lover, not a fighter and because he was abandoned, he was a terrible mess of skin, bones and matts when he came into the shelter. He has big pretty eyes, medium length fur, is on the quieter side, sort of in the way of what people generally thinks of cats. Larry likes to play and gets along with the other cats in the shelter: he would be an easy cat to have and is very wellmannered. Larry is neutered, about 5 years old and up to date

Heidi is about 5 years old, spayed, and up to date on her vaccinations. She has a beautiful calico coat. Heidi is very interactive with people, loves to play and be around us so if you like a cat that likes to be with you, here is your gal! Heidi doesn't like other cats though so she should be the only cat in a home. Heidi likes dogs though! Did you know that calico cats are generally female cats? Ashes is an all black female cat. She was brought to the shelter by a man claiming that she was stray but we knew better because have you ever seen a stray cat weighing 22 pounds and so obese that she could barely walk? This is another example of people not taking responsibility for their animal by making sure his cat was seeing a veterinarian for her weight problem and then dumping her at a shelter. When people claim that they "found" a stray when really relinquishing their animal, it makes it more difficult for the shelter to find the right home and provide care because the person will not provide very important health and behavioral information with the "stray" cat. So Ashes has been on a very strict diet at the shelter and has lost 5 pounds already! She needs to lose 5 more pounds and she will be in "bathing-suit" shape. Ashes is about 5 years old and up to date on her vaccinations. She a very sweet cat and gets along wonderfully with the other cats in the shelter. Did you know that black cats are known for having great personalities, make great companions and are considered good luck in other countries? Low cost spay neuter clinics: There are too many homeless cats in Rhode Island! Do your part and make sure yours are fixed. The Warwick Animal Shelter has twice monthly low-cost spay neuter clinics for cats only. Please call the Warwick Animal Shelter 401-468-4377 for an appointment. You may also call mobile vet Salmon River Veterinarian at 401-793-0092 or visit www.rimobilevet.com for other locations. Crafting for Critters Spring Craft Fair will be held on Saturday May 9th at Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Road, Warwick from 10 am to 4 pm. Free admission. Support local artisans and browse handmade chocolates, jewelry, knit items, essential oils and more. Proceeds support the homeless animals at the shelter. To visit with Ashes, Larry and Heidi along with the rest of the adoptable animals, stop by the Warwick Animal Shelter during regular hours (M, T, W, F 124 pm; Sat & Sun 11 am - 3 pm; closed Thursdays and holidays) or follow Warwick Animal Shelter on Facebook. Please adopt locally and save a life. Judy Salvadore advocates for wild and domestic animals and is a member of Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter's Board of Directors. Fred Sullivan Jr. and Joel Kipper to Appear in “Rounding Third” Trinity Repertory Company's Fred Sullivan, Jr., who is enjoying rave reviews in Trinity Rep's current production of A Flea in Her Ear, and Ocean State Theatre Company's Managing Producer, Joel Kipper, who recently made his directing debut with OSTC's The Last Five Years, will be starring opposite one another in OSTC's upcoming summer production of Richard Dresser's comedy Rounding Third. "We are thrilled that Fred is available to join us and that Joel's schedule will allow him to flex his acting muscles once again," said Producing Artistic Director Amiee Turner. "Bringing two great Rhode Island artistic leaders together is such a joy and, having witnessed the offstage chemistry of these very funny gentlemen, I can say I think they are absolutely perfect for this piece. I loved having the opportunity to share the stage with Fred in Laughter on the 23rd Floor last winter and am really looking forward to directing them both in this very funny play." Fred Sullivan, Jr. has been a member of Trinity Rep's acclaimed acting company since 1984 and has appeared in 115 productions during his 30 seasons. In addition to Scrooge, some of his favorite roles include Sir John Falstaff in both Henry IV and The Merry Wives of Windsor, Harold Hill in The Music Man, Captain Hook in Peter Pan, Edmund Tyrone in Long Day's Journey into Night, Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple, Alfred Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Daddy Warbucks in Annie, Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night, Walter Burns in His Girl Friday and Teddy Platt in both House and Garden. Mr. Sullivan has also appeared with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company in Boston, The Sandra Feinstein Gamm Theatre in Pawtucket, RI, the Dallas Theatre Center, Berkeley Rep, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and NJ Shakespeare. Ocean State Theatre Company patrons will remember his star turn as Max in last season's critically acclaimed production of Neil Simon's Laughter on the 23rd Floor. Joel Kipper is a founding member of Ocean State Theatre Company and holds a BFA from Missouri State.

OSTC audiences will remember him as George M. Cohan in George M! (2008) and as Malcolm in The Full Monty (2010), both down at "the barn," and as Michael in Lombardi (2013) here in Warwick. Other performance credits include Cosmo Brown in Singin' in the Rain, Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie and Mungojerrie and Skimbleshanks in CATS. In addition to performing, Joel has a strong background in technical theatre with experience in carpentry, props and stage management. Mr. Kipper recently made his main stage directorial debut with OSTC's production of The Last Five Years. He also directed OSTC Family Fun Fest productions of Fabulous Fable Factory, Schoolhouse Rock Live! and How I Became a Pirate. In addition to his directing work at OSTC, Joel is proud of his past work with the Narragansett School System in their theatre programs. Rounding Third will be presented at Ocean State Theatre from June 3 21. Previews are scheduled for Wednesday, June 3 at 7:30 pm and Thursday, June 4 at 2:00 and 7:30 pm. All other performances will be held Tuesday (except June 9), Wednesday, Thursday (except June 11), Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm, with matinees on Sundays at 2:00 pm and a special Sunday evening performance on June 14 at 6:30pm. Conducting Conversations Live!, a free post-show discussion, will follow the 2pm performance on Sunday, June 7. The theatre is located at 1245 Jefferson Boulevard, Warwick, RI. Tickets are $30 for preview performances and $34-$49 for all other performances. Discount rates for groups of 20 or more are available by calling (401) 921-1777 x112. $25 "Rush" tickets are available on a limited basis one hour prior to curtain on the day of the performance. Tickets are on sale at the box office Monday through Friday from 12 noon - 6:00 pm, Saturdays from 12 noon - 4:00 pm, and from 12 noon until curtain time on performance days. Barnes & Noble Warwick Welcomes Special Guest Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots Player Barnes & Noble Warwick is pleased to host Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots Player Joe Vellano and Sean Stelatto, author & NFL Sports Agent for a meet & greet, Q&A and booksigning for Stelatto's book No Backing Down The Inspirational Story of the 1994 Salem High School Football Team on Thursday, May 14th at 7:00pm at 1350 Bald Hill Rd, Warwick RI. NFL sports agent Sean Stellato has never backed down from a challenge. Once told "skinny kids don't make it in a sports full of giants," he defied the naysayers to become a star quarterback at Salem High School during a tumultuous time in the town's history. After standing on the sidelines as a sophomore and watching Super Bowl Champion New England his beloved Patriots player Joe Vellano team suffer a crushing defeat, he bravely told revered coach Ken Perrone that if he believed in him and started him as quarterback the next season, he'd lead the Salem Witches to the Super Bowl. He did,

despite the perfect storm of political, legal, and personal turmoil that surrounded his team when a contentious teacher's strike almost put an end to Salem's legendary season. Stellato tells the remarkable story of this modernday hysteria in Salem and the diverse group of underdogs, their almost insurmountable personal struggles, and how they banded together to take on the school administration and the courts to achieve victory in No Backing Down: The Inspirational Story of the 1994 Salem High Football Team. Chronicling the 11-day strike that began on

Halloween in 1994 and the events that happened afterwards, the book lays out the battles on and off the field, highlighting Coach Perrone's controversial decision to continue to coach the team despite a cease and desist order.
