PLAYWRIGHT’SNOTES MEGANGAILCOLES
I READ LISA MOORE’S OPEN IN A NEWFOUNDLAND LITERATURE CLASS OVER TWENTY YEARS AGO I KNEW AT ONCE THAT GRACE, IN PARTICULAR, WOULD STAY WITH ME ALL THE WHILE CHANGING THE TRAJECTORY OF MY ACADEMIC AND ARTISTIC LIFE YEARS LATER, WHEN I WAS REQUIRED TO SELECT PROSE FOR AN ADAPTATION PROJECT AT THEATER SCHOOL, THE CHOICE WAS OBVIOUS. I WAS TWENTY-FOUR, ROUTINELY PENNILESS AND CHRONICALLY UNREFINED, ATTEMPTING TO CULTIVATE A SENSE OF SELF WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT THAT WOULD EVEN DEMAND OF A PERSON. IN THIS WAY, ELEANOR’S PERPETUAL STRUGGLE RESONATES WITH ME STILL AS IT LIKELY WILL WITH MULTITUDES THOUGH I HAVE NO DIRECT EXPERIENCE WITH CONSENSUAL NON-MONOGAMY, I HAVE UNFORTUNATELY COUNTLESS TIMES FOUND MYSELF COERCED INTO MEETING THE WANTS AND NEEDS OF OTHERS IT IS UNDOUBTEDLY PAINSTAKING, YET UNDENIABLY NECESSARY, TO EXAMINE ONE’S FLAWS ANDFALSEHOODSASELEANORDOESANDSOSHEISOURDESERVEDANTIHERO. DRUNK AND ANGRY, FIGHTING FOR HERSELF. IMPERFECT. DETERMINED. COMPLEX. LIFE IS FULL OF LESSONS IN RESILIENCE AND CAPACITY BUILDING, THE LIKES OF WHICH CAN ILLUMINATE THE JOY OF LIVING IF ONLY WE REMAIN COMPASSIONATE WHILE NAVIGATING OUR WELL-INTENDEDERRORS
IN THESE MOMENTS OF TRANSITION AND STRIFE, ART CAN PROVIDE A PHYSIOLOGICAL BUFFER AGAINST THE DAMAGE DONE WHILE UNDOING THE WORST OF IT. THEATRE ESPECIALLY, AS A REPRESENTATIONAL ART FORM, HAS THE REVOLUTIONARY CAPACITY TO ENACT PRO-SOCIAL CHANGE AND IMPROVE COLLECTIVE WELLNESS THROUGH EXAMINING SHARED BELIEFS. THE PLAY’S THE THING YOU SEE, IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. STORYTELLING IS OUR CONNECTIVE TISSUE, THE STORIES WE TELL MAKE ANDREMAKEUS
IT HAS BEEN A BLESSING TO FINALLY TELL THIS STORY WITH THESE PEOPLE IN THIS PLACE WE CALL HOME. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS HAPPEN.
