FLOREAN HOEFNER PIANO

Born and raised in Germany, trained in New York City and now based in Canada, Juno-award winning jazz pianist and composer, Florian Hoefner, draws from a myriad of influences that culminate in his unique brand of modern jazz.

Praised as a “composer-bandleader of insightful resolve” by the New York Times and a “harmonically daring pianist… reaching toward new sonic territory” by Downbeat, Florian Hoefner continues to make waves as an inventive creator and performer of exciting contemporary jazz.

He has released 6 albums under his own name and many more as a sideman. Desert Bloom, the second album with his trio with Andrew Downing and Nick Fraser won a 2023 Juno Award for Jazz Album of the Year. He is also the winner of 2 East Coast Music Awards, 2 MusicNL Awards, 2 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards, and the Stingray Rising Star Award at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

JIM VIVIAN BASS

Jim Vivian has been at the forefront of music making in Canada for over 30 years, and has performed and/or recorded with most of the wellknown jazz artists working in the country today.

Jim has long-standing associations with many musicians in Toronto and across the country such as Mike Murley, Jeff Johnston, Don Thompson, Brian Dickinson, and John MacLeod, to name a few. He appears on over 130 recordings, 30 of which have been nominated for Juno awards in as many years. He has also performed and recorded with many internationally esteemed artists such as John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Mick Goodrick, David Leibman, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, and Norma Winstone.

Tara Davidson is a JUNO Award-winning alto and soprano saxophonist who has performed around the world at such prestigious venues as New York City’s Carnegie Hall, the acclaimed North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, the JZ Jazz Club in Shanghai, China, and The Kennedy Center, in Washington, D.C. As a bandleader, Davidson has produced seven recordings since 2004 and performed on approximately 40 recordings as a side musician.

Five of her seven recordings as a leader or coleader (Carn Davidson 9) have been nominated by the JUNO Awards for “Jazz Album of the Year.” Her bands have been comprised of various configurations from duo to nonet and have included such personnel as Mike Murley (saxophone), William Carn (trombone), Laila Biali (piano), Kelly Jefferson (saxophone), Andrew Downing (bass and cello), David Braid (piano), and Ernesto Cervini (drums), among many others.

Davidson also enjoys a diverse freelance career as a woodwind player (saxophones, clarinet, and flute). She has worked with musical theatre companies such as the Stratford Festival, the Musical Stage Company, and Drayton Entertainment, and with such symphonies as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Ballet Orchestra. Studio and performance opportunities have allowed Davidson to perform alongside such artists as Oliver Jones, Joel Frahm, Tommy Banks, Jens Lindemann, Jazzmeia Horn, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Wycliffe Gordon, Phil Dwyer, Dave Douglas, Shirley Bassey, Ingrid Jenson, Christine Jensen, Brad Turner, and John Riley.

GREG RITCHIE DRUMS

Greg Ritchie is originally from Saint John, New Brunswick. He was awarded a BMus from McGill University and pursued a decade long career in jazz drumming in New York City. Some of his notable work includes recordings and performances with Joel Miller (Juno Award winning album), Francois Bourassa, Steve Amirault, Susie Arioli, Andrea Lindsay, Marie Denise Pelletier, David Liebman, CBC, NFB, NPR, Montreal Jazz Festival Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Blue Note NYC, New Delhi Jazz Festival and The Israeli Opera. He currently resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

ALEXANDER BROWN TRUMPET

Alexander Brown is one of Canada’s most renowned trumpet players on the jazz and Latin scene today. Born into a musical family, Alexander developed a deep passion for music early in life and began his formal studies at the age of ten. He then went on to earn his bachelor degree in classical music at the acclaimed University of Arts of Cuba/Instituto Superior de Arte. Upon graduation, Alexander launched his solo career as both a trumpet player and composer. Recognized as a highly versatile musician well versed in classical, jazz and pop music forms, Alexander was offered the role of Music Professor at his alma mater. He taught there for seven years. Brown has toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States. In Canada, Alexander is recognized for his musical ingenuity. For this reason he can be heard in a wide range of settings from big band ensembles and orchestral groups to jazz trios and theatre productions.

He also performs with his own sextet and has collaborated with many of the most celebrated musicians in Canada including Archie Alleyne, Norm Marshall Villeneuve, Hilario Duran, Luis Mario Ochoa, Bernie Senensky, Dave Young, Bill King, Terry Clark, Don Thompson, Nikki Yanofsky, Jackie Richardson and Andrew Craig.
