SMART TOPAZ is an outstanding stallion that came from the 6666’s Ranch of Guthrie, Texas. He was hands down their top colt of 2015 and we feel very fortunate to own him. We have ridden “Topaz” on the ranch, he is extremely athletic, very willing and cowy.

His sire, WR THIS CATS SMART, is one of High Brow Cats top sons. He has won $236,514 in cutting and was the NCHA Open Finals Champion. His offspring have earnings of over $20 million. WR THIS CATS SMART is the number two all-time sire in NRCHA, and the number three all-time ranch horse sire. He is a very versatile sire and you are now seeing a lot in the roping pen. His mother, PADDYS TOPAZ is one of the 6666’s top mares. She is the granddaughter of the great mare CASEY’S LOVELADY, inducted into the 2017 AQHA Hall of Fame. PADDYS TOPAZ is the mother to their stallion, JESSES TOPAZ, one of the truly great young sires of the breed. SMART TOPAZ has become very popular with our customers here at Weaver Quarter Horses. He sires colts with a lot of bone and size, plus his good looks and athleticism. He himself has tremendous bone and size (he measured 15.3 hands on his 3rd birthday). His offspring are winning in the NRCHA and roping pens. I look forward to this year’s colt crop getting out and performing. We have his daughters in production now, and there are some colts out of them in the sale this year. I really like the way his daughters are maturing into broodmares. We are excited to see what they will bring to our program. We are expecting great things from this sire. All offspring eligible for the Riata Buckle. 6 Panel N/N

GENUINELY BUSY is a really well-muscled, good looking son of TUF N BUSY. He is that pretty golden buckskin color. We purchased GENUINELY BUSY from Terri White and she was also the owner of TUF N BUSY. This was the colt she kept to replace TUF N BUSY, and we feel very fortunate to be able to own a horse of this caliber. It just doesn’t get any better - not only does he have a great cow horse pedigree, he also has the color, looks and ability to back it up.
GENUINELY BUSY is an own son of TUF N BUSY and TUF N BUSY’s offspring have won over 3,740 AQHA points, 27 ROM winners, mostly in roping events; and he has sired 46 point earners out of 236 foals sired. Plus, they have won at all levels of roping from Amateur to PRCA with earnings in NCHA, NRHA and NRCHA.
June 4, 2006 #5032161
GENUINE LEIGH WRIGHT was an outstanding calf roping horse and was hauled in the PRCA. She is an own daughter of LENA’S WRIGHT ON. He has a LTE of $109,995 and won the NRHA futurity as a three-year-old and was an AQHA World Champion Working Cow Horse as a five-year-old. He is the sire of NRHA and NRCHA money earners as well as an AQHA Champion. This is our 13th crop by GENUINELY BUSY. We are extremely proud of how his colts are breaking out and riding. Everyone that rides a “RICKY” colt loves their attitude and easy-to-get-along with demeanor. We get a lot of repeat buyers with the GENUINELY BUSY colts, just like we did with the IMA TUF LENA colts. That says a lot for the TUF N BUSY bloodlines. His colts are really starting to excel in the roping pen. He had five offspring in the Riata Buckle roping last year, they are being hauled in all levels.
I couldn’t be happier with “RICKY” He sires colts with a lot of cow, athletic ability but most of all, they are extremely good minded and very trainable for any venue. This is an outstanding set of colts this year. His daughters are just coming into production and I am very pleased with their colts. We have excellent frozen semen available on GENUINELY BUSY, and his offspring are eligible for the Riata Buckle. 6 Panel N/N

I am really high on this horse, he possesses a lot of the qualities I like to see in a stallion. He is extremely athletic, very cowy, and has that want to please attitude. We are really pleased with his colts, they possess his athletic ability and have been extremely good to work with. “Charlie” sires colts with extremely good bone and size. Their quiet demeanor and wantto-please attitude are making them very popular. BET HESA ECHO CAT is a colt we bought at the 2018 NRCHA Futurity Sale, and is a big, strong red roan stallion by BET HESA CAT. BET HESA CAT is one of the hottest Snaffle Bit Futurity sires going today, and they are become very popular in the roping pen. We are excited for what this colt brings to our program with his great working cow horse pedigree. BET HESA CAT
A well-bred cow horse pedigreed stud we bought from Wagonhound Ranch of Douglas, Wyoming. An own son of the $21.7 million dollar sire ONE TIME PEPTO, has accumulated winnings of $331,096 and won the 2005 Super Stakes Open Championship and the 2006 Augusta 5/6 year-old Open Classic Championship and the 2006 Abilene Spectacular Open Classic Championship among others. ONE TIME PEPTO is the number one sire of Reined Cow Horses and the number five sire of Cutting Horses. The mare family is outstanding. Dustin Ewing will tell you that PLAYGUNS MELODY is Wagonhound’s best mare. She is own daughter of the $9.5 million dollar sire PLAYGUN, and her offspring have earnings of $254,742. The Wagonhound ranch had the misfortune of losing this excellent mare last year. ONE TIME MELODY, a full sibling to ONE GUN AT A TIME, was a Top Ten Finisher in the Reno Open Futurity. PLAYGUNS PEPTO, another full sibling, was the Tri-State AQHA Ranching Heritage Four-Year-Old Open Working Ranch Horse Champion. STRESSIN, “Gunner’s” granddam, is the mother of money earners of $707,466.
One cannot write a better cow horse pedigree. “GUNNER” is a big, strong horse that stands 15.1” and received a year of reined cow horse training. My kids will tell you he is the most athletic stallion we have ever owned, which is saying a lot. We feel very fortunate to own him. We are excited with the colts GUNNER has sired, and we are just starting to ride them. They are extremely athletic colts that enjoy working cattle. GUNNER’S foals have a lot of presence in the field, and as you will see, he sires colts that are uniform in their appearance. We know you will like the colts that we are offering this year. 5 Panel N/N, N/My

PC LAUGHIN JUDGE, a big, powerful gray horse that is an own son of JUDGE CASH. He brings a big time rodeo pedigree to our program, and we really like his colts. This is his fifth crop of foals and we are excited to watch his colts grow up. They are showing good size and willing attitudes. I really like his daughters that we have retained for future broodmares. “JUD” posseses great bone and feet. He sires colts with good bone, withers and a lot of them have his gray color. It will be exciting when these colts hit the rodeo scene. The JUDGE CASH/SUN FROST cross is really starting to win in the barrel racing and the roping pen.
JUDGE CASH has race earnings of $115,936 and SI 110. He has sired race earners of over a million dollars and barrel race earning of over $2 million, four NFR Qualifiers, including the 2010 AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year, QUICK JUDGE.
His dam, PC LAUGHIN CAJUN, combines the very best of Stanley Johnston/Pat Cowan breeding. BOON DOX JOHN horses are known for being great rodeo horses, and possess the mind to be able to handle it. I really like the BOON DOX JOHN bred horses, if you look back at the studs I used over the years, you will see many trace to this great sire, all from the mare side. He also has two shots of SUN FROST and traces to the great LAUGHING BOY. It would be hard to write a better rodeo pedigree. PC DOX CAJUN, a circuit champion sire and PC MISS SAN BARS, producer of several rodeo winners, was a full sister to the great PC LAUGHIN SUNDUST - both are ¾ siblings to FRENCHMANS GUY. We are just starting to ride his colts, and they possess their dad’s laidback attitude and like to get out and cover country. 6 Panel N/N
ORIGINALLY SMOOTH is an extremely good looking buckskin stud that we purchased from Copper Spring Ranch in Bozeman, Montana. He looks more like his sire everyday. We like “MARCO’S” pedigree with lots of speed and a shot of cow. Marco is sired by A SMOOTH GUY, one of FRENCHMANS GUY’S top sons. A SMOOTH GUY is a leading sire of horses sold in 2015, 2016 and 2017. He also won AQHA points in heading and heeling. And he is siring winners of over $3 million with $930,000 in 2021 alone. Offspring won more than $170,000 at the first Riata Buckle. And they continue to win at all levels. He is the sire of SMOOTH N FAMOUS, a multiple Futurity finalist and earnings to date of $160,000 and A SMOOTH MOVIN GUY, the 2018 Reserve Champion in Old Fort Days Futurity. His colts are competing in all disciplines, including breakaway roping. A SMOOTH GUY is known for siring level-headed horses that are easy to train. Marco sure fits the mold, as he is intelligent and willing to learn. He has also shown a lot of atheleticism when ridden.
Marco’s dam, THE ORIGINAL SIN, has a SI of 89 and race earnings of over $9,860. She is the mother to four starters with earnings of over $12,000. She is an own daughter of FIRST DOWN DASH SI of 105 with race earnings of $857,256. His maternal Grandsire was AQHA three-year-old Champion, RARE FORM, SI 120 with Equi Stat barrel racing earnings of $107,244. This is an excellent set of colts sired by Marco with something for everyone. He sires colts with excellent hips and great eye appeal. They are well received by customers. We are riding his colts now and they are all we thought they would be. His daughters are proving to be great broodmares as you will see throughout the catalog. They raise colts with a lot of style and looks.

Outstanding Colt! I have had this name in my pocket for a few years, inspired by a Red Steagall song, just waiting for the right colt. This is him! Take a moment to examine this colt. A handsome bay colt with a small white star on his forehead. Mother is one of our older Smart Topaz mares, and she sure is proving herself. Although this colt is younger than the other weanlings, don’t let that fool you; he will grow into a strong horse. He will certainly have the sturdy feet and bones needed to handle rough terrain. The field where this group spent the summer is steep and rocky —great country for colts.

with his brother John. Together they founded the town of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, as the first settlers of Douglas County. James B. participated in the Indian Wars of 1855-56 along the Pacific Coast and then settled as a hotel proprietor, merchant and farmer. James B. married Sarah Ann Wright in 1859, and eight children were born to the union – James Albert 1868, William Louis 1870, Samuel Clark 1873, George Henry 1876, and Edward Meric 1878. Two daughters, Emma and Mary, passed away young as well as the oldest brother John. Sarah died of tuberculosis in 1882, and James B. continued to farm but encouraged his five living sons to move on. In 1888, eldest son James A. traveled to Fergus County to settle, and his brothers soon followed. Later, James B. would join his sons in Fergus County and spend the rest of his days with them until his death in 1906.
The Weaver brothers were cowboys and entrepreneurs. Upon their arrival to Fergus County and Judith Basin area, they rode in the Judith Basin pool and cowboyed by day for area ranchers. While younger brothers Edward and George attended school in Lewistown, the three older boys rode the range in the same pool as Charlie Russell. They broke horses and started a livery stable in Lewistown, and with their father’s business savviness and pioneer spirit, they began to enter other ventures such as hotels, saloons, mining operations and civic service.
Eldest brother James A. helped his father farm from the early age of eight and cowboyed in Oregon

and Wyoming before moving to Montana. James registered the family brand, AX, in 1888 and entered his first bout of public service when appointed Deputy Sheriff of Fergus County in 1891. James was always around for beginnings– in 1899 he was on the first city council under Mayor J.P. Barnes when Lewistown was incorporated, and Mayor Barnes appointed him City Marshall. Because of James’ interests at the time in saloons and hotels, there were protests as to his moral ability to be in law enforcement. However, James’ ability won out because he went on to become a Deputy Game Warden for the area and then served the rest of his life as the State Game Warden. James also had a variety of ranch and mining interests throughout the county and was a founding member of the Elks Lodge #456. James married Margaret Mulholland in 1896, but she died in childbirth along with twin daughters in 1899. James later married Bertha Hosch in 1902. Their only son died at the age of five when a flu epidemic went through Fergus County. James A. Weaver passed away in 1951 at the age of 83, having lived a long life filled with pioneer spirit and devotion to community. He is buried in the Lewistown City Cemetery beside his wife Bertha and son James Phillip.
William Louis Weaver also rode the range with Charlie Russell, and then the Bear Paw pool with Kid Curry. William moved on to Chinook with his cowboying in the early 1890s and branched out into owning a saloon. William married Phoebe Thornber in 1892, and they had four children - Myrna, Elmer (Stan’s grandfather) and twins Thelma and Zelma.
William raised cattle and horses while owning the saloon in Chinook and traveled east to St. Louis to buy cattle and north to Canada to purchase horses. He had many ranching interests and proved up on a homestead claim outside of town in 1916. William had half an interest in the family horse brand, AX, with brother James. William also registered the XO brand on the right rib for cattle in 1903. Both brands were inherited by his son Elmer and eventually went on the livestock at the ranch in the Bears Paw Mountains that Elmer purchased in 1925.
William, Phoebe and the girls moved to California around 1920 where William continued his business pursuits. William Weaver passed away in 1927 at the age of 57 and is buried in the Inglewood Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA.
Samuel Clark Weaver was eighteen years old when he moved to Montana to ride the range. After cowboying, Sam became a real estate developer, both in Kendall and Lewistown. He owned several livery stables, a restaurant, two saloons with his brother James, a saloon in Kendall with his brother Edward, a hotel in Harlowton, had mining interests with both brothers, and partnered with other men on the bank in Kendall. Sam was liked and respected in the area, and it was often said he was a man of his word. He started the Judith Automobile Company with a garage in Lewistown, the first of its kind. He was a founding member of Elks Lodge #456. Sam was fond of riding horses and shooting, and for three years in a row was the Montana Trap Shooting Champion. Sam married Myrta Duncan in 1896, and their daughter was stillborn the following year. Tragically, Sam was killed in a car accident in 1919 at the age of 45. The community was stunned with headlines reading, “Lewistown Loss of Revered Businessman.” Sam is buried alongside his wife and daughter in the Lewistown City Cemetery.
George Henry Weaver finished school and followed older brother William to Chinook. George was an avid sportsman and spent many hours hunting and fishing throughout Montana. He partnered in mining and ranching businesses with his brothers, and had his own gold mining claim in Zortman, MT. George married Jennie Gorman and they had two sons, Myron and Michael. George moved to Spokane where he worked as a diamond driller, a trade he passed on to his son Mike. George died in 1947 and is buried in Miami, AZ.
Edward Meric Weaver, the youngest brother, graduated from high school and immediately went to work for his brother Sam in the mining town of Kendall. Ed managed the saloons, especially the
gambling wheels and card tables. Ed was proving himself when he was called up for the Spanish American War. He was assigned to Company I and rode with Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. In April 1899, Ed was wounded in the Battle of La Loma in Malolos, Philippines when he was shot in the forearm. After the war, Ed returned to Kendall. He married Zella Peppard of the neighboring gold mining town of Gilt Edge in 1902. The couple had two children, Dorothy and Edwin. Ed became the owner of the Rock Saloon and Riser Saloon in Kendall in 1905 and later purchased the Graves Hotel in Harlowton when the Kendall mine went bust. Upon his brother Sam’s death, Ed and his family moved to Washington where he continued in the hotel business. Ed died in June of 1941 and is buried in Seattle in a veteran’s cemetery.
The Weaver Brothers – James, William, Samuel, George and Edward – saw Montana change from the times of the open range to the establishment of business and industry through mining, homesteading and development. They were involved in all facets of Montana’s history, often being the first pioneers in many areas and creating a path for many generations to follow.

I have been around horses my entire life. Growing up on the ranch we used them for everything –from feeding to gathering and everything in between. When I was younger, we didn’t have Quarter Horses, my dad ran thoroughbreds with a little Tennessee Walker in them. He liked a big sorrel horse that would get out and cover country, and he instilled in me the idea of a horse that would get out and move. We raised our own horses for the ranch – my dad had a few mares and we would get one or two colts out of them a year. We also rode the mares, but didn’t really have a stallion. My dad would get a young horse when he was two or three-years-old, breed him, and then geld him and ride him. My dad was more of a cowman. His pride and joy were his registered Herefords, and he would sell bulls to the neighbors.
The first time I was really introduced to a Quarter Horse was when a neighboring ranch bought a grandson of Poco Bueno. The rancher had gone to Texas to purchase him – this was in the early 1960s. My dad took two mares over to breed to him, and we got two fillies. We kept them and rode them on the ranch and I really liked the one mare. In the fall of 1971 my dad went to a horse sale in North Dakota and bought Pretty Miss Denver. She was a dun mare and was always my dad’s main ranch horse. My dad passed away in 1981 and we never rode her again as I made her a broodmare.
In the fall of 1981, Nancy and I went to a horse sale in Glasgow, Montana. There we bought Stormy Dun Dee as a yearling. I broke her and Nancy rode her on the ranch for a few years. In 1983, we went back to that horse sale in Glasgow, MT. It was a consignment sale and I planned to buy a Quarter Horse stud. I found a good-looking chestnut weanling colt with no white. I really liked his mother, she was the perfect mare, and I bought the colt – Beaus Red Man.

At the time, I didn’t really know pedigrees, I just liked the look of that colt. Turned out he had a really good pedigree, and we were able to start our breeding program in earnest with him. Beaus Red Man was a grandson of Skipper W on the top and his mother was an own daughter of The Ole Man. The second dam on the bottom side was by Hard Twist. That colt had three AQHA Hall of Fame inductees on his papers.
I bred Beaus Red Man to Pretty Miss Denver and Stormy Dun Dee. I got three mares and one gelding out of Pretty Miss Denver – the mares were Call Me Blackburn, Beaus Miss Blackburn and Beaus Miss Denver. All would become foundation mares of our program. The gelding, we called him “Ace,” was never registered, but he was awesome. We rode him on the ranch for many years. He was coal black with not a stitch of white. The kids did everything on him when they were growing up – roped in the arena and in the branding pen, run barrels and run across coulees, gathered cows, and chased horses. He won the Montana State 4-H Pole Bending one year. Ace was the reason I fell in love with Quarter Horses, he was the most versatile horse I ever saw and I just wanted to raise more like him.
I bred Northern Fox, a grandson of Two Eyed Jack, to Pretty Miss Denver and got Pretty Miss Fox – another one of our great foundation mares. She was a buckskin mare and still holds the record for the highest selling weaning in our sale. Pretty Miss Fox has several descendants in the sale, including Lot #27 Weavers Ms Busy Fox, Lot #57 Weavers First Play, Lot #67 Weavers MsBusyJudge and Lot #70 Weavers SmoothMsFox – all mothers trace to her representing four different stallions exemplifying her diversity.
I got two siblings out of Stormy Dun Dee and
Left to right: David Weaver on “Ace” and Daniel Weaver on “Desperado.” Both boys were in high school at the time. Desperado was out of Ace’s full sister, Beaus Miss Blackburn. Two of the best ranch horses that ever lived.
Beaus Red Man – a gelding and a mare. The mare was a big, good dun mare named Beaus Poco Dee. I lost her at a young age during foaling, and the gelding was a great ranch horse that the kids did everything on. Call Me Blackburn had many foals for us over the years, and we kept every one of her fillies. Beaus Miss Blackburn lived to the grand old age of 28, passing away after she weaned her filly in the fall. She is the grandmother to the Lot #5 buckskin stallion, Weavers One Cowboy and Lot #25 buckskin filly, Weavers Miss Wright. Beaus Miss Denver was a big, black mare whose last foal, SNW Pretty Miss Blue (by Ima Bit of Heaven), is 23 years old this year and had her 18th colt this spring by Bet Hesa Echo Cat. SNW Pretty Miss Blue is the grandmother to Lot #42, Weavers Paddy Boon.
In our 2025 sale there are 71 weanlings and 36 of them trace to Pretty Miss Denver and eight trace to Stormy Dun Dee. In the last ten sales, the high selling weanling traces back to Pretty Miss Denver. In a lot of cases four of the top five colts in the sale trace to her. Stormy Dun Dee was the grandmother to the 2009 AQHA High Point horse of the year, Ima Tuf Missy, pictured on page 19. The gelding Bailey Billingsley rides, Weavers Busy Lad (pictured on page 24), is a great-great-grandson of Stormy Dun Dee. Bailey lives on a ranch in Glasgow only miles away from where Stormy Dun Dee was foaled. Stormy Dun Dee crossed well with Poco Ima Doc and I got two mares from that cross whose descendants are out in the roping world. One of them sold for $150,000 in the Legends of Ranching Sale at Colorado State in 2024.
Both Nancy and I have passion for the horses and love raising them. As the years went on, we slowly acquired more mares and raised some too that we could put in the broodmare band. Our first big purchase towards a stallion was Poco Ima Doc. I saw him in an ad in a trade magazine and called the lady who owned him up. At the time it was a lot of money
Poco Ima Doc
for us, but we bought him and it was such a good choice. “Poco” was always good to his mares, easy to be around, and his offspring were cowy, fast and had the softest eye. I rode Poco through several calving seasons on the ranch and come spring time he would look towards the mountain, ready to be turned out with his mare band. One of the greatest crosses we had on the ranch was between the foundation mare Call Me Blackburn and Poco Ima Doc – a black mare named Call Me Pretty Poco. She was a long time producer for us and many times her colts topped the sale. We are fortunate to have some of her daughters still in the broodmare band, including Weavers Tuf Pretty, the mother to Lot #22, Weavers Keeping Tuf.
In the early 1990’s we decided to work towards a production sale, a dream of mine since I was a kid. I was terrible at private treaty, but was really getting into the breeding side of horses with pedigrees and versatility crosses. I planned our first sale for two years and went to every production sale I could to learn how to put one on. Nancy was always good at the advertising and marketing, and somehow knew that the internet was going to be a big part of that. We kept all the weanlings from the previous year’s crop and then had weanlings and yearlings at our first sale in 1996. We have had a horse sale every year since.
We were always looking for new stallions and were adding one every so often. The biggest step we took was Ima Bit Of Heaven. We bought “Ima” from Ron Knutson in Spokane, WA. He was a two-year-old. Again, it was a lot of money for us at the time. Originally, Nancy and I purchased Boonlight Dancer from Knutson and went to Spokane to pick him up. Ima Bit of Heaven had been at a trainer in Canada and Knutson was taking him down to California. I asked to ride him and I really, really liked him. For us it was better, be-
cause Ima was a horse we could use right away and Boonlight Dancer was just a yearling. So we traded horses and Ima Bit of Heaven came home instead. It actually worked out for everyone – we would not have been able to promote Boonlight Dancer like he eventually was, and Ima Bit Of Heaven helped our program and put us on the map. Ima was out of Smart Little Lena and Peppys From Heaven, a full sister to Peptoboonsmal. We bought him the first of June that year (1998) and already had the other stallions turned out with all my mares. I always breed my mares as threeyear-olds for the first time, but I did have six twoyear-olds that were coming into the broodmare band. I also had one older dry mare that was good to get along with. I ended up putting those seven horses out with Ima and then we had seven colts in the following year’s sale out of him. In 1999, those weanlings brought three times the average of our previous sales, and that’s when we started getting national attention for our breeding program. We bred outside mares to him, and also showed his colts in cutting and reined cow horse. Ima was listed as a Leading Sire of Reined Cow Horses one year, and we showed a lot of his colts.
Dan Roeser would train them as two and three-yearolds and show them their first year. Then I would show them as four and five-year-olds. I really enjoyed the Hackamore class. At one time, we had 27 mares in our broodmare band that had money won on them.
As I got older I cut back on the showing, but we always bought stallions that were athletic and had a trainable mind. We have purchased studs for speed - PC Joes Frost, Perkster, Originally Smooth, PC Laughing Judge – but their ability to watch a cow is one of my top priorities. The Tuf N Busy line has been an extremely popular one for us. We receive more repeat buyers on those two stallions- Ima Tuf Lena and Genuinely Busy – than any of our other stallions. But the idea is always to breed for horses with versatility where people can take them any way they want, and they have that good-looking Quarter Horse build and mind.
The pendulum has swayed more to the rope horse lately, and I’m really pleased with the stallions we have now for this discipline. The Bet Hesa Echo Cats are showing great potential as well as the Smart Topaz colts in that area. One Gun At A Time and Once In A Play Boon have the genetics to excel in this event and others as well.
This is our 30th Annual Production sale, and we have sold horses to all fifty states, seven Canadian provinces, Germany, Mexico, South Africa and Australia. All from our sale in Great Falls, MT off our ranch in the Bears Paw Mountains. We still really enjoy the horses and all the friends we have met through them. I still look forward to the next foal crop and wonder where they will go and what they will accomplish. As a breeder you are always looking to the future. We just purchased a new stallion this summer, a son of Woody Be Tuff, the leading rope horse sire in the nation the last two years. His mother is Shelby Boisjoli-Meged’s breakaway roping mare, No Wimpy Turns, that has won over a million dollars in that event. Can’t wait to turn him with a bunch of mares next spring.
I want to thank each and every one of you for showing an interest in our horses and especially those that take one home. God Bless you and we will see you at the sale!

Elmer Weaver was born August 7, 1895, to William and Phoebe (Thornber) Weaver in Chinook, Montana. Elmer grew up around horses, and horses and ranching proved to be his major passions throughout life. Elmer’s father William owned a saloon in Chinook and was a part of Montana’s racehorse community. His father and uncle both cowboyed in Montana in the open range days. Both rode with Charlie Russell and became good friends. Elmer visited Charlie several times when Charlie was living in Great Falls, Montana. At the age of 16, Elmer was riding as many as 19 horses at a time for the public. His two older sisters also broke horses, and Elmer would handle the money in their business venture. At the age of 17, Elmer moved to Geraldine, Montana and bought a livery stable. Over the next few years he traded horses, purchased a cattle herd, and bought and leased land in the area for his cattle.
In 1914, at the age of 18, Elmer overnighted a group of horses he was trailing to Chinook from Geraldine at the ranch of Nels Hokanson. Hokanson’s ranch was about halfway between the two towns and beyond the Missouri River, which Elmer had to cross with his herd of loose horses. Hokanson later told the story of how Elmer roped a horse the next morning before heading out. Elmer’s hired man Frank Smith eared the horse down while Elmer saddled him and got on. The horse blew up and bucked around the corral. After the horse settled down, Elmer turned to Hokanson and said, “I guess I am ready to go.” Hokanson let the rest of the horses out of the corral and Elmer and Frank Smith trailed them the rest of the way to Chinook. When Elmer reached Chinook, his horse was broke. According to family and Hokanson, Elmer used this technique many times. Elmer made several trips between Chinook and Geraldine over the next few years. He also trailed broke horses to Canada and traded them for unbroke horses which he would bring back to the United States to break and sell. On April 26, 1916, Elmer married Vona May Thomas in Fort Benton, Montana. Vona had ridden the train out from Missouri with her mother and brothers in the summer of 1915. Four sons were born to Elmer and Vona: Roy in 1917, Howard in 1923, Earl in 1927, and Arthur in 1929.
The year 1925 proved monumental for Elmer and his family. His livery stable in Geraldine burned to the ground. He heard of a ranch for sale in the Bears Paw Mountains close to the ranch of Nels Hokanson, the same man whom Elmer had overnighted horses with 10 years earlier. Elmer always liked the country over there, so he sold what land he had and took his family across the Missouri River to the old Murphy Ranch at Warrick, Montana. Elmer handled the horses and cows, and Vona drove the team with her two little boys in the wagon. Elmer and Vona worked hard to put their ranch together. The 1930s were hard years for everyone, and the ranching community was no exception. In the fall of 1936, cows and calves were selling for $35 a pair. Since no one had any feed for cattle, Elmer was able to purchase several of these pairs. Then, along with his other cows, Elmer trailed the entire herd to Chinook, 70 miles away, and wintered them on beet tops. Over the years, Elmer bought several local ranches and his land ownership grew. In 1942, Elmer brought the first tractor to the neighborhood. In 1946, He bought a place outside of Chinook with hay ground. By this time Elmer had made his reputation as a good stockman, and he bought this place to winter his calves. Elmer and his sons would wean the calves at the home place and then trail them to Chinook to winter. They would also trail all the yearlings and dry cows they were going to sell. Elmer would then ride the train to St. Paul, Minnesota, and sell his cattle, like several ranchers in the Bears Paw Mountains did.
When Elmer passed away suddenly June 16, 1952, he had succeeded in building up a large ranch with hard work and determination. This dedication made it possible for each of his four sons to own their own place. Arthur received the AX brand for horses and Earl received the XO brand for cattle. Arthur and Earl passed their ranches on to their sons - Arthur to Stan and Earl to Alan Weaver and Don Weaver. Both ranches are celebrating 100 years in 2025, still using the brands registered by James A Weaver and William Weaver. Alan and Don have helped put on the annual horse sale for Weaver Quarter Horses since its inaugural year.
Elmer made a notable western contribution by being a good businessman, horseman, and cattleman. He was able to do all these things even though he left home at a young age with little in his pocket. Elmer left a legacy by settling and improving the land that made it possible for those who came after to continue in the ranching lifestyle with a rich western heritage.
