What is a Termite?

Termites are often called the “silent destroyer� because they may be secretly hiding and thriving in your home or yard without any immediate signs of damage. All termites consume cellulose-based plant materials.

Unfortunately, all homes, regardless of their construction type, can provide cellulose food and attract termite infestation.

Types of Termite: Subterranean termites are insects that feed on wood, frequently becoming pests of homes. There are two types of termites commonly encountered by homeowners: the worker and the swarmer. Worker termites are creamy colored, 3-4 mm long, and typically only seen when a mud foraging tube is broken, or infested wood is broken open. Swarmers are the reproductive cast of the termite colony. They are approximately 4 mm long and dark brown or black in color. They may or may not have wings, as the swarmers lose their wings shortly after emergence.

Some indications you may have a termite infestation:  A temporary swarm of winged insects in your home or from the soil around your home  Any cracked or bubbling paint or frass (termite droppings)  Wood sounds hollow when tapped  Mud tubes on exterior walls, wooden beams or in crawl spaces  Discarded wings from swarmers

What Termites Can Do? Termites digest wood paper and other material containing cellulose. They can cause a lot of damage by tunneling through the woodwork of houses.

Inside homes they can invade the wall cavities. This is where they can do a lot of undetected damage. Outside if you have timber buried in earth it would be wise to do a regular termite inspection.
