President’s Letter Welcome readers, to the fall issue of the Region VII Head Start Sand BoxTM Magazine. We hope you enjoy the variety of articles and inspiring stories about all that is going on in Region VII. If you would like to share a story about something happening in your area, please let us know!

We at R7HSA would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mike Baugher as the new Director of Executive Services.

Mr. Baugher has been involved in Head Start for most of his life. Having grown up in a home with both parents working for Head Start, he has always understood the important role Head Start plays in the lives of the most vulnerable children and their families.

Mike’s 25 year background in marketing and graphic design has played an important role within Region VII for the past 10+ years. He has been instrumental in the creation of the Association’s brand through logo design, marketing materials for Regional events, the newly launched R7HSA.com website, and the creation of this publication, the Head Start Sand BoxTM magazine.

Mike understands that a strong, unified regional community, having a shared vision and cohesive brand speaking the same language across all regions, is an important foundation for continued growth and overall success for Head Start. He is excited to jump right in, and looks forward to getting to know each of you! We look forward to the creative direction his unique perspective will bring to R7HSA in this new role as Director of Executive Services.

H

ead Start opened its doors in 1965. Six years later, a young mom new to this country enrolled her two daughters in the early childhood education program in Dodge City, Kansas. It was housed in what is still Miller Elementary School, our neighborhood school. It is now known as Bright Beginnings.

Before I can speak of my Head Start experience, I will share some background information regarding my childhood. I was born in Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico to smart, hard-working but underprivileged parents. They migrated to the United States with the same dream that brings many other immigrants to this country. They had two young girls in tow, myself and my sister Lori. She was three and I was two. While in the U.S., they had two more children (Mary Lou and Jesse), settled in Dodge City, bought a house, and became citizens.

Our story begins…when Lori turned school-age, my mother went to enroll her in kindergarten. School officials recommended her for a program called Head Start conveniently located at 8

the school. We were only Spanish speaking at the time therefore both of us were enrolled. Lori attended half day Kindergarten and spent the other half in Head Start. My memories are vague but do remember doing art projects, puzzles, having work stations and my favorite… reading time. That is where my love of books began! Although both of my parents share a passion for reading, I do not remember having children’s books in our home until we were in Head Start.

One memory that is clear is when my sister, Mary Lou, insisted on going to school with me. We were having an Easter Egg hunt that day and she wanted to be a part of the fun. Our sitter used to walk us to school. She had Mary Lou and me by the hands and Mary Lou broke loose and ran ahead of us to the school insisting she was staying. She was too quick, every time the sitter would get close she would dart in a different direction. The teacher and sitter eventually relented and let her stay for the party. Unfortunately, I do not remember the teachers but do remember Viola Lopez, a para. She was kind and nurturing.

The same way a community college transitions and prepares students for a university, Head Start prepares children for kindergarten. It helped us develop social skills and taught us letter sounds to learn the English language. Lori and I were learning in two languages simultaneously. We were taught English phonics at school while our Dad taught us Spanish phonics at home. I was already reading when I started kindergarten. I was the studious, disciplined student.

I wanted an education and a career to be able to comfortably support myself. I graduated from Dodge City Senior High School in 1986 and attended Dodge City Community College on scholarship, finishing my education at St. Mary of the Plains College with a bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Technology. I have worked at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Ks for 26 years as a radiographer doing x-rays and cat scans. I married Donny Davis (a WSU graduate) in 1995, and we reside in Wichita, KS. Lori went to Fort Hays State University and married Darran Riedel. They are owners of Riedel’s Garden Center in Hays, Ks.

Education has always been of great importance to me and I stress the value and privilege of it to our three children, Keagan, Brogan, and Regan. Brogan (19) is a sophomore at Butler Community College on an academic and instrumental scholarship, and Regan (17) is a junior in the I.B. program at East High School in Wichita. Our oldest child, Keagan, is a junior attending Fort Hays State University on a cross country/track scholarship. She is majoring in social work and currently volunteers twice a week for eight hours at the local Head Start. She has a passion for children and has a servant’s heart. She is required to volunteer in a major related service. She called me, read me the list of agencies and asked for suggestions. My first and immediate response was Head Start! She loves the kids and wants me to meet them. She has said, “Mom, I just can’t get angry or impatient with them. I don’t know how they are treated or what they are taught in their home.” I am proud of her association with Head Start and know she is making a life-long impact on these children. n Region VII Head Start Sand BoxTM | Fall 2016

I went to the hospital the week before they got out and learned how to take care of them. The staff were afraid that I couldn’t take care of them because I was grandma, instead of mom. But I went in there and I just fell in love with them the first minute I

saw them. They were premature, so we had to get them in the car — the fire department came and we couldn’t even put the seats in. You know every two hours we fed them and it was … [hard].

But whenever Head Start started coming, one of the first things I remember is that what I was doing was okay. I thought Head Start?

They can’t do anything. But it was one of the best decisions I made, because I got help and I’d look forward to the teacher coming. I’ve learned so much though on how to take care of them. They have grown into the most wonderful five-year-olds.”

What we were trying to do was develop a comprehensive child development program for disadvantaged children, so that they could have the best possible start in school and life.”

So we’re trying to help children, parents and teachers, all have skills and strengths in order to build resilience, so that they’ll have the skill sets they need going forward. I think that we do that, and we take a really unique approach in doing that. So what we want to do is, not only teach our children the ABCs, and math, and how to tie their shoes, but we want to teach them how to deal with stress.

What is it they’re feeling? Where in their bodies are they feeling it? And then help them find voice for what they need. If we can do that as teachers and as counselors and as parents, then we’re going to equip our children to go forward in their world to feel like they are empowered.”

Commit to Cultivating a Compassionate Culture

I try and fill my heart with compassion and know everyone here is making the commitment to be more empathetic.

It is obvious that Head Start began to help enhance the quality of life for families through education and support services, but taking it one step further is truly helping all of us refocus our mind set. Catherine Swackhamer has been a part of the Region 7 TTA system since 2003.

She has had several different roles including, Early Childhood Specialist and State Manager. Catherine has over 33 years of experience in Head Start and Early Childhood Education. She served as an Early Childhood Education Specialist and as the Iowa State Manager for previous TTA contracts. Catherine is a former Director of Child Development programs including Head Start for a Community Action Agency in Iowa, and has delivered direct services to families as well as taught in Head Start classrooms.

Catherine holds a B.S. in Early Childhood Education/Psychology, M.A. in Counseling, and a PhD in Cognitive Psychology.
