In Invisible Walls, Mikaela Montenegro immerses us in a world where fog, steam, and tides envelop the scenes, creating a cinematic atmosphere of uncertainty that reflects complex mental states, isolation and obsession. Through a creative process that merges cinema, photography and painting, the artist constructs images filled with mystery, where perception blurs and reality seems to fragment. Originally presented at the Alliance Française Gallery in Quito – Ecuador in 2022, this series now arrives to New York, enriched with new pieces that continue her visual and emotional exploration. Montenegro invites us to look beyond the visible, to question certainties, and to embark us on a sensory journey.

Through my work, I seek to establish a meaningful connection with the spaces where it resides. My goal is to create a dialogue between the artwork and its surroundings, offering a new sense of purpose. I strive to transform spaces into more welcoming and inspiring places where art becomes an experience.

[...] “it is unclear whether the chair is sinking or emerging from the waters; a piece of furniture, seemingly in good condition, meant for sitting, placed in the instability of the waters; the representation of a conceptual art icon on turbulent waters.”

Mikaela approaches art as a construction rather than just an expression of the supposed inner life of the artist, their moods, or personal psychology, though it is indeed her experiences, feelings, and intimate thoughts that may spark the process.
