Tourist Day 2025
Mijas honours visitors with Tourist Day
This celebration thanks tourists for choosing the town as their holiday destination, offering flamenco and free paella at a large-scale event
A party to show
appreciation
Many choose Mijas as their holiday destination. Tourists who visit us enjoy the municipality for its landscapes, its cuisine, its beaches and even its people. On Wednesday, 24th of September, the Virgen de la Peña Square was filled with visitors and neighbours to celebrate the traditional Tourist Day, an event organised by the Town Hall, through the Tourism Department, which brought together hundreds of people around flamenco and gastronomy.
“Mijas is a cosmopolitan and welcoming town, home to more
than 120 different nationalities. We are also leaders in tourism, attracting people from all over the world. That is why we wanted to pay tribute to these visitors, as tourism is one of our main driving forces”, explained the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP).
For his part, the Councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlighted the importance of this day, pointing out that “Tourist Day is a tribute from Mijas to all visitors who choose our municipality as their destination. It is a way of thanking them and of showing them the best of our culture, traditions, and hospitality”.
“The event”, according to Luisa Machen, a representative from the Mijas Tourist Office, “is very successful year after year, and we at the office tell all the tourists who visit us that they can come and enjoy a plate of paella, sangria or Malaga wine while enjoying flamenco in this beautiful place that is Mijas”.
The programme featured a flamenco performance by the Mar y Arena group, which attracted an international audience under a marquee set up in the square, decorated with flags from different countries. Afterwards, a free paella tasting was offered, which was very
well received by attedndees. Jerez highlighted the massive turnout, with “a square full of tourists from around the world enjoying flamenco and our cuisine”. This, he continued, “is the best proof that Mijas continues to be a leading tourist destination on the Costa del Sol, capable of offering authentic and memorable experiences”.
Argentina, Chile and France
According to data from the Tourist Office, tourists from more than 150 countries visit us each year, and on the day of the event, people from at least 70 different nationalities gathered. Some of them explained

“Mijas continues to be a tourist hotspot on the Costa del Sol, offering authentic and memorable experiences. Events like this help reinforce Mijas’ international image and consolidate its appeal as a year-round destination”
why they chose Mijas as a tourist destination: “This is my first time visiting Mijas, it’s beautiful and it’s a dream to be here. We have been lucky enough to travel to this place and we have fallen in love with it”, said Lila Gómez, a tourist from Argentina. Her friend, María Estela Díaz, said that she visits the town not only for its charms and gastronomy, but also for “the sense of safety; you can go shopping and leave feeling calm, which is not the case everywhere. It’s very nice to be able to stroll peacefully through the streets”.
We also have visitors from Chile: “We’re here on holiday because Mijas is so beautiful, fabulous. I loved Mijas, its landscapes, its houses, everything impressed me”, said Gladys Contreras, full of wonder. From South America to France, a little closer. Rosa Contreras, whose parents are Spanish and who came from Toulouse, told us that she has visited Mijas several times, “but we had never seen a flamenco show. I had a wonderful time because I have Spanish roots and from time to time I have to come to Spain to feel them again”. Finally, Jerez emphasised that “events like this help to strengthen Mijas’ international image and consolidate its appeal as a destination all year round”. The Mijas Town Hall would like to thank all participants for attending and reaffirms its commitment to continuing to promote activities that showcase the culture and identity of the municipality, always in collaboration with the tourism sector.

Analysing the situation and the measures to be adopted in relation to victims of gender-based violence. This was once again the purpose of the quarterly meeting held by the Viogenex group to continue protecting women victims of gender-based violence, and not only of foreign origin. The meeting on Thursday 25th, which took place at the La Cala Cultural Centre, was chaired by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who emphasised that “we hold these meetings to organise ourselves, to see which actions will be carried out throughout the year, but also to review the actions that have already been carried out by each entity in coordination with the different departments of Mijas Town Hall”.
Ana Mata:
Both the Civil Guard and the Local Police closely monitor those restraining orders that exist and remain in force”
The meeting also addressed issues such as the national failure of anti-abuse bracelets that protect women victims of gender violence from their aggressors under restraining orders. In Mijas, there are currently eight women who are protected with these devices, which is why, according to the mayoress, Mijas has already conveyed its concern

The meeting was attended by representatives from the municipal departments of Family and Equal Opportunities, Social Inclusion, and Foreigners.
Also present were the Civil Guard, Local Police, Soroptimist, the Red Cross, Málaga Acoge and for the first time the Provincial Therapeutic Community, which currently cares for 22 women who are victims of gender-based violence and have some form of addiction, as well as the minor child of one of them.

The psychologist from the Provincial Therapeutic Community, Rocío Torres, emphasised that “this meeting has been extremely interesting because we, the various services that support victims of gender-based violence in Mijas, have come together, shared cases and opinions, and, above all, coordinated our efforts, which is essential to provide proper care to these women”.
Support for victims
Viogenex continues to work on improving coordination between all the bodies involved in combating gender-based violence, such as the courts and security forces, which in Mijas assist 315 women who are victims of gender-based violence. The Civil Guard monitors 180 of these cases, while the Local Police monitors 135.

Unanimous agreement to call on authorities for solutions against Asian algae in Mijas
Editorial Department
On Wednesday 24th, the plenary session of the Mijas Town Hall approved a motion requesting that the Spanish Government create a specific state fund for municipalities affected by the presence of Asian algae. The text describes the algae as a “serious environmental, economic and tourist problem”, given that this type of algae proliferates uncontrollably in the Alboran Sea. The motion was passed unanimously.
The councillor responsible for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), presented the motion and stressed that the removal of this type of waste requires significant human, technical and financial effort. Proof of this is that in 2024, the Town Hall allocated almost 692,000 euros to these tasks, while between April and August this year, 2,221 tonnes of algae have already been removed, costing 516,545 euros.
“Despite these efforts, it is clear that the scale of this problem far

exceeds the municipality’s capabilities. The impact goes beyond the economic: the Asian algae deteriorates the environmental quality of the coastline, damages the tourist image of Mijas, affects the well-being of residents and visitors, and puts key infrastructure, such as the coastal path, at risk”, explained the councillor. For this reason, the motion submitted to the plenary session outlines several measures, including the urgent creation of a

The September ordinary plenary session approved the proposal from the Department of Infrastructure and Works to modify the programme of actions for the local improvement levy in Mijas for the period 20192025, which has been extended over recent years to include all the actions planned to improve the water infrastructure in the municipality. In addition, a motion was approved urging the Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian Regional Government) to continue working on issues affecting the situation of schools in the municipality, including replacing prefabricated classrooms by building new centres in La Cala and resolving leakage problems at the IES Villa de Mijas .
Budget amendments
In the same plenary session, three budget amendments totalling 1.75 million euros were approved to cover outstanding invoices and ongoing services.
The first amendment will use 726,000 euros from reserves to pay invoices under contracts for 2024, which could not be paid from that year’s budget despite having been allocated, including 186,416.84 euros for public street electricity, 155,473.89 euros for electricity in municipal buildings and 310,362.35 euros for paving.
The second amendment will increase by 542,000 the funds
allocated for waste treatment, mainly Asian algae, at the recycling plant.
After debate,
the opposition’s in voce amendments were accepted
In addition to these two budget amendments, a third was approved to transfer 500,000 euros from the contingency fund to chapter 1 in order to cover part of the Social Security contributions for employees hired by the Town Hall in 2020 and 2021 for employment programmes subsidised by the Junta de Andalucía. Bravo explained that this is because, following an inspection, the Social Security determined that these workers should have contributed at the same rate as other municipal employees and is now claiming the difference. In total, 692,000 euros must be paid to Social Security, 500,000 of which will come from this amendment, with the remainder covered by the 2025 Human Resources budget.

Awards for empathy
The La Cala de Mijas Lions Club was one of the main highlights at the fourth edition of the Joan Hunt Awards, receiving the accolade in the Solidarity category. The ceremony, organised by the Malaga Provincial Council and the Cudeca Foundation to recognise the contribution of foreign residents in the province, took place on the afternoon of Thursday 25th in the Edgar Neville Auditorium in the capital, where the extensive work of the group from Mijas was praised.
The mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), attended the event, describing the award as “very well deserved”, and highlighting the close collaboration between the association and the Town Hall. “These awards are very important for the province, but also for Mijas”, said Mata, noting that “one has been awarded to an entity that works very closely with the Town Hall in all areas. More than 30 people are part of this association, carrying out charitable actions every day to support essential projects in our municipality. Therefore, I am very pleased that the name of Mijas is associated with the solidarity of the La Cala Lions Club”.
For his part, the club’s president, David Kay, described the recognition as “fantastic” and expressed that he was “very grateful and satisfied” on behalf of an organisation that, as was revealed during the gala, has raised more than one and a half million euros for charitable causes throughout its history. “Our work is to help all those in need, within our means”, he stressed.

With the arrival of autumn, the water park closes its doors, having opened earlier than usual this year, in mid-June

The Las Lagunas Water Park closed its doors on Monday 22nd of September after a busy summer with many users and visitors. The Department of Parks and Gardens praised residents for their care and respect for the facility. The key to enjoying this attraction throughout the summer was everyone’s civic behaviour, which meant it never had to close for maintenance or system blockages. From now on, the leisure areas and children’s playground will remain open.

“This initiative arose from the need to support Suspiros de Cuatro Patas, which looks after many dogs and relies almost entirely on voluntary work. We walk the dogs, clean the kennels, spend time with the animals... and that’s what keeps an animal shelter going, volunteers and people who get involved. Today we have also received food donations”, said Mariluz Cerrudo, a volunteer.

Actor Robert Redford, who sought refuge in our town in 1966, passed away on Tuesday 16th at the age of 89 at his home in Utah
Ed. Dept. The legendary actor Robert Redford passed away on Tuesday, September 16th, at the age of 89 at his home in Utah. Beyond his brilliant film career, Mijas holds a special connection with the actor, as in 1966 he chose this town as a refuge during a decisive moment in his life.
Accompanied by his family, Redford stayed for seven months on a property in the mountains, seeking to escape the pressure of Hollywood and
reflect on his future. In Mijas, he even considered giving up acting to dedicate himself to painting, one of his great passions.
Decades later, the actor himself fondly recalled that period, during which he enjoyed the town’s tranquillity and his contact with local life. His stay left a mark on some residents, who still remember the stay of a young heartthrob who, for a time, made Mijas his home. Rest in peace.

The event, promoted locally by the Association Círculo de Mujeres Casa Luna, took place on Saturday 20th along the La Cala boulevard and on Sunday 21st at various locations the town centre. “For the first time, we have brought the global wellness event to the municipality”, announced the president of the association and coordinator of the event in the town, Silvia Mengíbar. What better way to end the summer than with “alternative therapies, massages, yoga, meditation, bachata or salsa”, added Mengíbar.
Under the slogan ‘Make wellness your superpower’, this event brought together hundreds of residents and visitors in a programme featuring more than 70 free activities. In addition to the activities mentioned, Pilates, Zumba, meditation and coaching were combined with talks on self-care, sustainable fashion workshops and activities for the whole family.
The Vik Gran Hotel Costa del Sol was one of the venues hosting yoga, salsa and even a talk on personal growth. “Thanks to the hotel for opening its doors to us so that we could present all these activities”, said Paula Lissandrello, also a coordinator for World Wellness Weekend in the town. Institutional support
The Mijas Town Hall also participated in this initiative. The councillor for Sports, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), emphasised the importance of this municipal collaboration. According to the councillor, Sports “is a department that fits in perfectly with this event, because wellbeing and health are closely linked to sport”. It was a weekend focused on wellbeing, with strong participation, a family-friendly atmosphere, and the possibility that the municipality has taken its first step towards putting Spain on the world map of wellbeing. “The Town Hall is committed to continuing with World Wellness Weekend year after year, if this year goes well”, concluded Alarcón.

Mijas teaches us to understand, protect and love our seas
The town has been chosen by the Biodiversity Foundation as a venue for learning how to preserve marine areas
On Friday 19th, Mijas hosted a day of snorkelling and science aimed at protecting our natural aquatic heritage, particularly one of its key species, posidonia. The initiative sought to encourage citizen collaboration with the scientific community through the submission of photographs and observations to support various studies.
Organised by the Biodiversity Foundation along the coasts of Spain, and in Mijas by Life A-Mar, with the collaboration of Sema Entornos and the Mijas Town Hall, the day was divided into two parts: a theoretical session, held at the La Cala Branch Office and a practical session on Calahonda Beach. During the first hour, participants learned about the emblematic natural elements of our coast and the scientific applications. The purpose, highlighted the director of Sema Entornos, Alberto Sema, was to learn “how to identify the most important species and, above all, how to photograph them and upload them to citizen science apps such as Minka, iNaturalist, and Marine Litter Watch, so that the research team at CSIC and others can use these observations”.
More than 20 participants joined the initiative, including the councillor for the Environment, Marco Cortés (PP), and the councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), who noted that the audience attended the event “to see both the flora and fauna that we must conserve within the marine areas so that future generations can enjoy this treasure of Mijas and that, on behalf of the Town Hall, we work all year round on these beaches and this coastline to ensure that conservation is as comprehensive and long-lasting as possible”.
Into the water
After the theory, it was time to get into the water in search of Posidonia, “one of the emblematic species and one of the main habitats in this area”, emphasised the marine biologist and scientific diver Lolo García, who explained that
“we are also going to look for that endangered limpet, which is in the same category as the Iberian lynx, the ‘Patella ferruginea’, commonly known as the rusty limpet”.
Posidonia oceanica is as important for our seas as the holm oak is for terrestrial ecosystems. The environmental educator from Life A-Mar, Jonathan Sánchez, explained that the “holm oak, in the sea, is Posidonia. It buffers the waves, cleans the water, and provides oxygen so that other species can thrive. Posidonia itself serves as a refuge for many other species”.
Mijas in the Natura 2000 Network
Due to the presence of Posidonia and the Kentish plover on its coast, Mijas is included in the Natura 2000 Network, a setting that is also very attractive to biologists and lovers of aquatic environments.
