The Mijas Town Hall has unlocked the project to cover the María Barranco stream in Las Lagunas, with the approval of the feasibility study by the Junta de Andalucía. This mandatory procedure, which must be authorised by the Public Water Authority (DPH), allows the project to move forward. It responds to a historic demand from residents and is considered key from both an environmental and mobility perspective.
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), announced on Thursday 16th that the government team has budgeted for and com-
pleted the feasibility study for the works, a preliminary and essential step for tendering the drafting of the construction project and its subsequent execution. To this end, the Town Hall will allocate the million euros granted to the municipality by the Malaga Provincial Council as part of the fourth phase of the Municipal Economic Assistance Plan (PAEM). Mata praised the project, which is “key to improving mobility in an area where many Mijas residents live”, and highlighted that it will create more green spaces and improved pedestrian accessibility. In addition, the persistent bad odours from the stream, especially during summer, will
be eliminated, along with the pests that appear in the urban watercourse. The mayoress was accompanied by Soledad Romero, president of the Residencial Centro homeowners’ association, which borders the stream.
Wider cycle lane and access to buildings
The covering of the María Barranco stream will help to prevent flooding in the built-up urban area, as well as provide aesthetic improvements and better quality of life for residents in the area. Mata presented several renderings showing how the thoroughfare will look once the works are completed, with a wider cycle lane and impro-

ved access to the buildings that currently ‘overhang’ the urban watercourse. The Infrastructure and Works Service, led by the councillor Juan José Torres Trella (PP), commissioned this feasibility study (awarded for 8,990 euros) and expects that the drafting of the works pro-
ject will be awarded shortly, possibly before the end of 2025. Following that, the fieldwork will be put out to tender.
The area included in this project is classified as ‘social housing’, although it currently contains several industrial warehouses. In the future, the area

could be redeveloped and transformed, as there is currently no access to these buildings due to the ‘scar’ caused by the riverbed.
The president of the Residencial Centro association thanked the Mijas Town Hall, “on behalf of all my neighbours and the residents of the area”, describing the project as a “great step” towards resolving a situation that has persisted for far too long.

“We are reclaiming space for citizens, for mobility, for green areas and for the comfort of the residents of this area”
The mayoress highlighted thecommitment of the Malaga Provincial Council to municipal investment plans, such as the PAEM, “which are essential in helping town halls carry out necessary and long-awaited projects such as this one”.
A few days ago, we received the great news that the Malaga Provincial Council was promoting a municipal economic assistance plan for town halls in the province, and that Mijas would receive one million euros. “With that funding, we will be able to contract and tender this project, which has now been unblocked by the Junta de Andalucía, giving us the opportunity to carry out the works and make the covering of

The mayoress reiterated that “it makes no sense, that part of the street is covered all the way to the sea while another section has been left open”. “We are reclaiming space for citizens, for mobility, for green areas
and for the comfort of the residents of the area”, she reiterated.
Pending the tendering of the project design, the approved feasibility study estimates a budget of approximately one million euros before tax for the works, although this figure will be finalised once the project is officially awarded.
According to the Infrastructure and Works Department, the project design could be awarded before the end of 2025, followed by the tendering process for the works. The feasibility study was awarded for 8,990 euros.

Although the Mijeños in the first shift of the senior citizens’ trip had set the bar very high, those in the second shift were not to be outdone. Some 400 senior citizens left Mijas early on Tuesday 14th bound for Matalascañas, Huelva with their suitcases loaded with excitement. Ahead of them awaited four days of activities, excursions and experiences for all tastes.
Before departure, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), visited the Las Lagunas fairground to see the travellers off. “I wanted to wish them a wonderful time. They are leaving full of enthusiasm, knowing that the first group returned delighted”, said the mayoress. She was accompanied by the councillor for Senior Citizens, Silvia Marín (PP), and the councillor from the government team Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), who are accompanying the Mijas residents

I hope to have a great time, because I love dancing and feasting on prawns and ham”. Other residents said that it was their second time visiting Huelva and that ‘“everything is wonderful”.
Mid-morning, the group stopped en route at El Caserío de Aguadulce (Seville) for breakfast before continuing to their destination: the Hotel On Oceanfront in Matalascañas, where they are enjoying four days of excursions, leisure, culture and entertainment. A well-deserved holiday, sure to be filled with anecdotes and laughter. They deserve it!
Santa Teresa Takes to the Streets of La Cala
M.J.G. On Tuesday 15th, La Cala de Mijas celebrated the feast day of its patron saint, Santa Teresa de Jesús. The new parish priest of La Cala, Fernando Luque, invited everyone to join the celebration with faith, saying, “this celebration also represents love, tradition and devotion; it is a celebration of our patron saint”. Ana María Verdugo, from the Parish Association of Santa Teresa, emphasised that “we are also very happy with our new priest and we are looking forward to spending a few days together in good spirits”, while Sonia Sánchez, the secretary of the group, noted that “it is a wonderful time to get out and be together”.
At the end of the mass, one of the most emotional moments arrived when families presented their children born this year before the statue of the saint. Among the events planned in honour of the patron saint of Cala, a floral offering took
place, with participation from the Town Hall, brotherhoods, clubs, associations, families, and individuals.
At the end of the procession, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), highlighted that “this is a very traditional celebration, attended not only by parishioners in the area, but also by the different brotherhoods across the municipality”. She also added, that “it has been a very emotional procession, and we would like to thank the brotherhood for

“We are very proud and very happy with the welcome we have received”, said the president of the Parish Association of Santa Teresa, Belén Guerra
Other brotherhoods and parish groups in Mijas also praised the day. “Very beautiful, very welcoming, with much contemplation and feeling”, said María Peña Lei-
va, from the Parish Group of Santo Entierro in Mijas Pueblo.
“People keep coming back to the church in search of the faith they have never lost; the church continues to be a place of spiritual refuge”, said the spokesperson for the PP in the Town Hall, councillor Mario Bravo. For his part, the spokesperson for Vox, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, said that “it was a very beautiful procession, and all the brotherhoods of Mijas took part”. Meanwhile, the PMP counci-
llor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, noted that there were “many people from La Cala, and even many visitors from other towns, joining the Parish Group of Santa Teresa in La Cala on such an important day for u”, concluded Maldonado.
The festivities in honour of Santa Teresa continue on Saturday 18th, starting at 20 hours in Los Olivos Park with the traditional fete, which was reintroduced last year. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the A-Compás orchestra and DJ Fabricio. On Sunday 19th, at 11 hours, mass will begin, followed immediately by the pilgrimage. The statue of the patron saint will be accompanied in this case by the Las Lagunas Music Association. The child and adult pilgrims will also be chosen, and a prize will be awarded to the best decorated cart, recognising creativity and originality.
“We are very happy to accompany the residents of La Cala once again on this important day”, said the socialist councillor Laura Moreno. For his part, the spokesperson for Ciudadanos, José Carlos Martín, stressed that “it is a special day for La Cala and for Mijas in general. With this mass and procession in honour of Santa Teresa, an intense week begins in La Cala, which will end with the pilgrimage on Sunday”.

The council, relatives of the officers and neighbours accompanied the force at a ceremony at the Manuel España Theatre and at a mass in San Manuel González
On Sunday, 12th of October, the Civil Guard celebrated the day of its patron saint, the Virgin of Pilar, with a mass at the San Manuel González Parish Church, in which fallen officers were remembered, followed by a ceremony at the Manuel España Theatre, where the Civil Guard presented awards and distinctions to outstanding members of the force, which is now celebrating its 181st anniversary.
The religious ceremony featured music by the Mijas Municipal Music Band and was officiated by parish priest Manuel Jiménez, who emphasised that “the Virgin of Pilar continues to tell us that Jesus Christ must be the fundamental pillar of our lives and that the Gospel is the pillar on which we must base ourselves in order to live and build a society in which we can all live happily, in which everyone has their place, feels welcome, and can live in peace and prosperity”.
As is traditional every 12th of October, the front pews on one side of the church were occupied by members of the Civil Guard, while those on the other side were filled by members of the municipal council, presided over by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), as well as representatives from the Fuengirola Town Hall and other security forces.

Afterwards, the authoritiesawarded various officers for their years of service and professional merits. “Crime statistics are at an all-time low and continue to fall, which shows that the work of our colleagues at the barracks is highly effective. We have now had two consecutive years of declining crime rates, which directly impacts the safety and peace of mind of the residents of Mijas”, said the captain in charge of the main Civil Guard post in Mijas, Miguel Ángel Fernández Cabrera. In recognition of this, the mayoress of Mijas expressed her gratitude to the force. In her speech, Mata
thanked the Civil Guard for their constant work in Mijas. “For the people of Mijas, seeing that green uniform always brings a sense of tranquillity, confidence, and security. The relationship between the Civil Guard and Mijas is long-standing and historic, and it must be strengthened”, she said. Other representatives from the Mijas Town Hall, who also attended the event at the theatre, joined in thanking the Civil Guard, highlighting their dedication, sacrifice, and commitment.

On Friday 10th, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), together with the managing director of the Andalusian Employment Service, María Victoria Martín-Lomeña , closed the commemorative events for Hospitality Day in Spain, hosted at the Andalusian Centre for Integrated Training in the Leisure Industries of Mijas (CIOMijas), which was designated in 2022 as a National Reference Centre for Hospitality, the only one of its kind in Spain. The mayoress highlighted the “enormous role of hospitality as a driving force for tourism, which in turn drives the economy”, and reminded that this activity accounts for 70% of the employment generated by the main industry on the Costa del Sol. Hospitality is “a sector that contributes to tourism, which is so important for Mijas. Our municipality is the most special holiday destination in Malaga, offering a wide range

To promote and strengthen training in the hospitality industry, CIOMijas will launch more than 20 courses aimed at specialisation in the sector, including training in the art of ‘espeto’ (skewered sardines) and wine cellar management. These projects will take place over the course of a year and will focus on “innovation, research,

C.Luque. On Friday 10th, the Idiliq group celebrated World Mental Health Day with an informative and motivational talk for its employees, followed by a convivial breakfast. The session, entitled ‘In search of happiness. From classical philosophy to scientific psychology’, was delivered by psychologist Alejandro López, who works for the company.
According to Juan Miguel Marcos, Director of Human Resources, “although we talk about occupational risk prevention, we usually refer to physical risks.
Mental health and psychosocial risks are increasingly important in today’s society, so it is more necessary than ever to focus on them. The company cares about mental health and we encourage our employees to do the same”.
For his part, Alejandro López stated that “human beings have always sought happiness and pleasure. Avoiding negative emotions prevents us from being happy, leaving us feeling dissatisfied and unfulfilled. We also label emotions as positive or negative, but all emotions are valid and they all teach us so-
mething”.
This is the second year that Idiliq has organised an event of this kind. Once again, they had the collaboration of the Association of Relatives and People with Mental Illness of the Costa del Sol (Afesol), which, on this occasion, brought a first-hand testimony from a patient. Beatriz González, a psychologist at Afesol, pointed out that “this year’s theme made it easier for someone to come and share their experience first-hand. The participant spoke about her experience with mental health and

shared her tools and strategies”.
The councillor for Social Inclusion, Mari Francis Alarcón, also attended the event and praised the organisation for raising awareness of this issue, which is still taboo in many areas. Alarcón said that “we need to raise awareness because this is a real problem. More and more people are suffering from these illnesses. The group invited me and I came to support them. They are doing a great job”.
The activity was presented by the Councillor for Youth, Melisa Ceballos / C.L.
At the Cortijo Don Elías, next to the Las Lagunas fairground, a haunted house called El Maizal will be set up, which will be open to those over 12 years of age.

Mijas Felina is organising a charity event to raise funds on the 26th of October
C.L. The Mijas Felina association is organising a new charity event, its traditional paella to raise funds for veterinary treatments. In addition, the group already has its charity calendar for next year on sale. This is the sixth consecutive year that the association has organised a lunch to raise money to help stray cats.
According to Manuela Bernardo, secretary of the group, “we are very much looking forward to this event. I would like to thank
Roberto for his continued support. This year marks the 6th edition of this event. We will have delicious mixed and vegetarian paella and many more surprises.” The event will take place on the 26th of October at Roberto’s Grill & Sports restaurant and bar in Calahonda, between 13:00 and 16:00 hours. The paella will cost 8 euros, and you can also contribute even if you are unable to attend by making a donation. Advance booking is required for lunch.
The owner of the restaurant, Roberto González, said that “this year we are once again collaborating with the group. These groups of people who are dedicated to caring for animals are very necessary. They need everyone’s help and support. We do what we can by organising this charity paella, where we donate all the money, and they also raise funds through their merchandising sales here”.
During the evening, there will be a market, a raffle and sweets

In the book, Navarro outlines the new regulations introduced in developments where owners rent out their flats to tourists, something that is not always welcomed by all owners.
“There is a lot of contradiction, even among the public administrations themselves, which are responsible for processing and managing this. There is also a lot of uncertainty, and the regulation of the laws is not as precise as it should be”, said José Luis Navarro, lawyer and property manager at Intercala.
