Message from the

mayoress of Mijas,

ANA MATA

With the arrival of Holy Week, Mijas once again prepares to experience days of profound emotion, tradition and faith. Our municipality is transformed to host one of the most significant celebrations of our collective identity, an event that defines who we are: a Mijas with soul, rooted in its history and proud of its traditions.

Each procession represents a legacy passed down from generation to generation, a public expression of devotion that fills our streets with solemnity and reverence. The sound of the processional marches, the scent of incense, and the glow of candlelight create a unique setting that invites reflection and fellowship.

Holy Week is, above all, a time of faith and unity. These are days when we strengthen the bonds that unite us as a community and reaffirm our shared commitment to our roots and values.

I would like to express my sincere recognition to the brotherhoods, confraternities and parish groups, whose effort and dedication allow this tradition to continue growing each year. Their constant and generous work transcends these few days and extends throughout the year, contributing essentially to the social fabric of

our municipality.

In this programme, you will find detailed information on itineraries, timetables and new developments, with the aim of facilitating participation in and enjoyment of each of the planned events.

“My sincere RECOGNITION TO THE BROTHERHOODS, CONFRATERNITIES AND PARISH GROUPS”

May this Holy Week allow us to live our faith intensely and renew the hope, respect and spirit of community that distinguish Mijas. These are days of faith, reflection and togetherness, where the soul of Mijas walks as one.

Message from

FR. HERMÁN MARCEL LUNAR

Parish priest of Mijas Pueblo

Jesus, You are my refuge

Once again, we prepare to celebrate the central event of our faith: Easter. The Word of God, who became man in Jesus Christ and moved through the world doing good as a messenger of peace, giving Himself totally out of love, even unto death on a cross, is risen, and calls us all to a new life that begins here and now. That Easter, that “passage” of Jesus through our humanity, is renewed year after year during Holy Week and resounds every Sunday in the Eucharistic celebration.

This transcendental event, which breaks through time and space, allows us to live in the eternal presence of God. Jesus, who is “the way, the truth and the life” [Jn 14:6], accompanies us on our journey and invites us to trust fully in His word. This trust can often be shaken by the adversities of our earthly path: illness, disasters, wars, hatred, resentment, envy, fame, money, social media and countless sins of today’s world can all cause our faith to waver.

Faced with these situations of sin, or what St. John Paul II aptly called the “civilisation of death”, our challenge as Christians is to bear witness to the “civilisation of love”. To do this, we must draw closer to Jesus and, from that intimate experience with the “God-with-us” (Matt. 1:23), stren-

gthen our faith, love without hesitation, and remain steadfast in the hope that the Kingdom of God is attainable, that we can be protagonists of a new society based on His teachings.

Where can we find the strength for such a great challenge? Holy Week is a “time” that allows us that intimate encounter: by

“The “passage” of Jesus THROUGH OUR HUMANITY, IS RENEWED YEAR AFTER YEAR DURING HOLY WEEK”

recreating, revisiting, and rereading the events of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection, we enter into His heart and experience them ourselves in a spiritual way.

To prepare us for the Easter Triduum (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday), the Church begins Lent with Ash Wednesday. Through the act of receiving the ashes, we stir our will; and through Lenten practices such as prayer, almsgiving and fasting, we strengthen our body and spirit to live

Holy Week with greater authenticity. The liturgy of these forty days journeys through the history of salvation, showing how, despite our sin, God does not give up on us. He calls us to be part of a holy people, to recognise His presence and His saving hand in every event of our lives, to view reality through the eyes of faith, and to discover how He anoints us with His Spirit so that we may have life in all its fullness. All this is aimed at recognising Jesus as the Son of God: the one who overcame the temptations of the Devil in the desert, who gives us the living water that quenches our thirst, who heals our blindness, and who delivers us from the pit of death to give us new life. This is the Jesus who became a servant to all, who gave Himself

“He is our stronghold, OUR REFUGE, HE IS OUR REDEEMER AND SAVIOUR”

for us on the Cross, and who entered the abyss of death to show us that light conquers darkness, that sin has no dominion over grace, and that He is our stronghold, our refuge, our redeemer, and our saviour.

I invite you to fix your gaze on the Christ who suffers for us, who allows Himself to be bound to a pillar to endure the cruel lashes of His executioners. Such suffering cannot be in vain; its purpose is to show us a living and true God on whom we can rely during life’s difficulties, finding in Him the reason to believe and to reach “our best selves”, in short, to be “holy and blameless before Him in love” (Eph 1:4).

May this Easter lead us to what is essential, may Jesus continue to be our support in overcoming the darkness of sin, and may we exclaim with one voice: Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

Happy Easter 2026.

Priest Hermán Marcel Lunar López Parish priest of the Inmaculada Concepción (Mijas Pueblo)

Parish priest of Las Lagunas Message from FR. MANUEL JIMÉNEZ

The days of joy are coming to our land. The holy days of the Christians’ Great Week are arriving. The scent of incense and the aroma of candles are here. Emotions are running high and the senses are overwhelmed. The sounds of the bands and the murmur of prayers are coming. The thorns that speak of death and the flowers that cry out for life are arriving. Feeling, fervour and devotion are here. Passion is coming.

Holy Week is a very special time for everyone, especially for us Christians who manifest our faith in Christ, died and risen, during the days when our Lord suffered on the cross and opened us to hope through His resurrection. Many activities take place during these days: first and foremost, the liturgical services in the parish, from Palm Sunday to the offices on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, the most important celebration of the year for Catholics. Furthermore, in our parish, these are days of intense work preparing for these celebrations, as well as the moments of prayer and reflection that accompany them.

And, of course, these days are also special for our parish’s Brotherhood of Jesús Vivo and the parish group of Cristo de Medinaceli. The latter, on Tuesday, and the brotherhood, on Good Friday, will bring to our streets the representation of the Pas-

sion of Christ with the sacred images of both groups, which throughout the year await the visits of the faithful in the parish.

Las Lagunas eagerly awaits their passage through the streets, blessing the hearts of the faithful and encouraging us to better ourselves in order to contribute to a better world. Moreover, we must do so united, each contributing what we do best. The

“The thorns that speak OF DEATH AND THE FLOWERS THAT CRY OUT FOR LIFE ARE COMING.

FEELING, FERVOUR AND DEVOTION ARE ARRIVING”

Church is immersed in a process of total conversion with the implementation of the Final Document of the Synod on Synodality. We are called to build the Church of the future, which must change certain external aspects to remain totally faithful to Christ and His Gospel. Therefore, we cannot focus solely on the aesthetic beauty of the processions; instead, we must make what

we champion: life, unity, peace, and piety, a reality through our participation, responsibility, and commitment to this trans-

formation the Church is proposing. Communion, participation and mission are the three pillars through which

we Christians must transform ourselves internally to turn our world into that Kingdom of God that brings peace to all. May the joyful days of Holy Week help us achieve this.

Manuel Jiménez Bárcenas Parish priest San Manuel González (Las Lagunas)

Parish priest of La Cala Message from FR. FERNANDO LUQUE

Dear brothers and sisters! It is with great joy that I write these words to you at the beginning of a new Holy Week. This is the first time that I share Lent and Holy Week with you as your parish priest. I must confess that I am experiencing these moments with the nerves of a beginner, but also with great enthusiasm and a desire to share these days with you. For every believer, and even more so for a member of a brotherhood, these are the most important dates of the year. They are the days when our hearts begin to beat faster, the days when

“These are the DATES WHEN WE RECEIVE THE SALVATION THAT COMES FROM GOD”

Lent tells us that something momentous is about to happen. They are the days when we remember our traditions and customs, experiencing moments that mark our hearts and stay with us for the rest of the year.

These are the dates when Christ celebrates the Last Supper, takes up His Cross, climbs Calvary, and offers His own life as a sacrifice on the Cross. These are the dates when we Christians celebrate the Mystery of our Faith, which gives meaning to our following of Christ. These are the dates when we receive the Salvation that comes from God.

Therefore, dear residents of La Cala de

Mijas, dear visitors and tourists: live this time intensely! Be aware of the gift Christ gives you, look into the eyes of that sacred image to which we have prayed and wept so many times. Ask Him with great faith, for you and for me, that we may turn towards God, that we may be Christians in word and deed, that we may let this sacrifice on Calvary give us Life with a capital L.

Let yourself be carried away by the Passion of Faith, listen to the music that lifts our hearts to God, breathe the incense that perfumes our streets, and embrace the brothers and sisters you love from the bottom of your heart Open your eyes and contemplate Christ who gives Himself for you and me, for us, for everyone. Join His heart, so full of love for humanity; tell Him that you want to be His, that you want nothing and no one to separate you from Him, and listen in the whisper of prayer to how deeply God loves you.

With affection, your priest,

Fernando Luque Varo Parish priest Santa Teresa de Jesús (La Cala)
