According to the mayoress, “the ground is saturated with water, which is causing landslides, fallen trees and risks to infrastructure”. This came after the highest alert level for rain was declared in Andalusia and classes were suspended across the region for Wednesday 4th of February, except in Almería”.

“We have deployed preventive measures throughout Mijas, reinforcing the emergency services, Fire Brigade and Civil Protection, Operational Services and Parks and Gardens”, said Mata, who insisted that “the 112 telephone number should be used responsibly in any emergency situation”. However, it should be noted that on Monday 2nd, the mayoress called a meeting of the Mijas Town Hall Emergency Advisory Committee in view of the weather forecast for Wednesday. The emergency plan was activated
on Monday at pre-emergency operational level 0, and it was decided to close the parks, the Coastal Path, and access to the river.
Among the measures adopted for Wednesday 4th, when orange alert was in place in Mijas due to rain and wind, were: the suspension of school activities; the suspension of activities in senior citizens’ centres; the suspension of UP activities; the recommendation to work from home whenever possible; the closure of parks and public spaces with trees due to the risk of falling; the suspension of outdoor sports

activities; and the preventive evacuation of flood-prone areas.
All of these measures remained in force on Thursday 5th, when Mijas was on yellow alert for rain, wind and coastal phenomena, while on Friday 6th it was expected that only municipal parks and access to the Gomenaro River would remain closed.
Committee meeting
The decision to maintain these measures was taken on Thursday 5th in the morning during a new meeting of the Mijas Town Hall Emergency Advisory Committee, where it was decided to keep the municipal plan in place in view of the forecast for a new storm on Saturday 7th, which has been named Marta, and for which yellow alerts have already been activated in Mijas due to wind and coastal phenomena. Mata chaired the meeting, during which the situation in the municipality and the incidents arising from storm Leonardo
were also assessed.
The mayoress announced that all public parks would remain closed, as the excessive moisture in the ground could cause trees and branches to fall and break. She also said that access to the river would remain closed, although the sports facilities would open on Friday 6th, as would the UP, unless a sudden deterioration in conditions forced them to close.
Truce in the weather
“Tomorrow, Friday, a respite from the bad weather is expected between one storm and the next, but we must not let our guard down”, explained the mayoress. The Fire Brigade, Local Police, Civil Protection, Parks and Gardens, Operational Services, Cleaning and Rural Areas will continue to coordinate their efforts to respond as quickly as possible to new incidents and minimise the risks arising from the storm.
Mata chaired the meeting on Thursday 5th, which was attended by several councillors, the head of the Mijas Fire Brigade and senior officers of the Local Police / Beatriz Martín.

PROTECTING
The priority, PEOPLE
THE MAYORESS, ANA MATA (PP), EMPHASISED THAT HER “PRIORITY IS CLEAR: TO PROTECT PEOPLE”. She therefore urged citizens to “be responsible, avoid unnecessary journeys and follow only information from official channels”. Finally, the mayoress stated that they continue to “work in a coordinated manner to ensure everyone’s safety” and called for the responsible use of the 112 emergency number.

ON TUESDAY 3RD, THE MIJAS TOWN HALL MADE THE RACECOURSE AVAILABLE TO OTHER MUNICIPALITIES FOR THE SHELTER OF ANIMALS. The facilities will remain open while adverse weather conditions persist, providing refuge for horses, equines and other animals from both Mijas and surrounding towns under red alert. The councillor for Livestock and Rural Areas, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), explained: “In Mijas, we understand that in situations like this, coordination and cooperation between municipalities are key. That is why we are making the racecourse available to those councils that are under red alert and need a safe space for their horses and other animals”. Basic Basic Income staff are on site to receive animals, while the Local Police are coordinating the various requests. Animal Domus was the first animal protection organisation to use the facilities, bringing in a dozen dogs.
On Monday 2nd, it was decided to close municipal parks, the Coastal Path and access to the river. These measures were intensified on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th, when the following were in force: the suspension of school activities; the suspension of activities in senior citizens’ centres; the suspension of UP activities; the recommendation to work from home; the closure of parks and public spaces with trees due to the risk of falling; the suspension of outdoor sports activities; and the preventive evacuation of flood-prone areas. FOR TODAY, FRIDAY 6TH, THE CLOSURE OF PARKS AND FOOTBRIDGES OVER RIVERS AND STREAMS REMAINS IN PLACE.
ON MONDAY 2ND, THE FIRST MEETING OF THE TOWN HALL’S EMERGENCY ADVISORY COMMITTEE WAS HELD, chaired by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), and attended by the councillors for Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox); Fire Brigade and Civil Protection, Francisco Jerez (Vox); Operational Services, Beaches and Parks and Gardens, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP); Livestock, Cleanliness and Rural Areas, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), and Social Inclusion and Sports, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), as well as the chief superintendent of the Local Police, Juan Manuel Rosas, and the deputy officer of the Mijas Fire Brigade, Francisco Manuel Mérida. At this meeting, the Local Territorial Emergency Plan was activated at preemergency operational level 0.

THE TOWN HALL ANNOUNCED THAT THE CARNIVAL CELEBRATIONS PLANNED FOR THIS WEEKEND HAVE BEEN POSTPONED until Saturday 14th in Las Lagunas and until the 21st in La Cala. Meanwhile, the Royal Andalusian Football Federation announced the suspension of sporting events from Friday 6th to Monday 9th. The impact of storm Leonardo in Mijas
Report by C.Martín, C.Bejarano, J.Perea and Ed. Dept.
At midnight on Wednesday 4th, Aemet’s orange alerts for rain and coastal phenomena and yellow alerts for wind came into effect across the Costa del Sol with the arrival of storm Leonardo. The rainfall began in the early evening and the first incidents were reported throughout the night. Early in the morning, the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), visited the vicinity of the Gomenaro River and took stock of the incidents: “It has been a difficult night in various areas of the municipality, with a very strong maritime storm that has damaged the coastal path at El Capricho, which has been damaged and will have to be repaired as soon as the storm passes, as well as a watchtower that has been swept away”.
Mata, accompanied by the councillors for Civil Protection and the Fire Brigade, Francisco Jerez (Vox); Operational Services and Parks and Gardens, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), and Livestock, Rural Areas and Cleanliness, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), pointed out that “trees have also fallen in several areas of the municipality, causing road blockages, but we have acted quickly”.

Teruel pointed out that “a tree fell on Calle Sergio García in Riviera at around three in the morning and we acted to remove it, and also, at the Calahonda roundabout, a pine tree fell, blocking traffic”. Along with Parks and Gardens, the Mijas Fire Brigade also attended to resolve the incidents; in the case of Calahonda, large tree trunks had to be cut up to clear the road.

were no incidents. Only minor leaks were detected at María Zambrano and Las Cañadas schools.
During Wednesday evening and the early hours of Thursday 5th, with a yellow alert for rain, wind and coastal phenomena, incidents continued, with around thirty incidents recorded during that night and Thursday morning. The Fire Brigade, Local Police, Civil Protection, Parks and Gardens, Operational Services, Street Cleaning and Rural Areas worked on the ground to minimise the consequences of this storm.
More interventions
The government team explained that multiple interventions were carried out due to fallen trees and branches (especially in Las Lagunas, Calahonda and Riviera). They also cleared architectural debris such as cornices and advertising hoardings, particularly at Dunnes Stores in Las Lagunas and Kiabi (Parque Miramar); and attended to broken windows and awnings in residential buildings (La Cala and Las Lagunas), a satellite dish (Las Lagunas), and a pergola (Riviera del Sol).

On Tuesday 3rd, the III Málaga Young Entrepreneurs Conference was presented. The event is aimed particularly at young people studying vocational training and will take place on the 13th of February, from 9:00 to 14:00 hours, at the Manuel España Theatre.
The aim is to facilitate access to this training on entrepreneurship for young people from across the Costa del Sol. It is organised by the Andalusian Youth Institute and sponsored by the Provincial Council. “We want young people to be motivated to become entrepreneurs and to see entrepreneurship and self-employment as another enriching professional alternative with a future”, said the regional minister for Employment, Mari Carmen Márquez
In this regard, the councillor for Youth, Melisa Ceballos (PP),
stated that “for young people who are unsure about their future, these conferences are a way of encouraging them and showing them that there are different job opportunities that they can pursue throughout their lives”.
Students from the vocational training programmes at IES Las Lagunas, Sierra de Mijas, Vega de Mijas and Ana Carmona ‘Veleta’ will attend, although students from other secondary schools in
Mijas are also invited.
The conference is organised by MS GROWTH; its CEO, Álvaro García, added that “our goal is to reach young people from Mijas and other towns with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants who are studying here. Other young people from the area who are interested in the conferences are also welcome to attend”. Registration is available via the website jornadajovenesemprendedores.com.

The Arts Society reveals the secrets of Ronda and the mystery of art theft
The Danish Club and the Salón Varietés host the collective’s upcoming lectures
F.M.R. The Arts Society Costa del Sol, linked to an international network based in London with more than 300 associations worldwide, is preparing its upcoming cultural events. With a large proportion of its membership residing in Mijas, the society organises monthly meetings to explore history and the arts in greater depth, returning this month with two high-level proposals.
The event in our municipality will take place on Tuesday 10th at 10:30 hours at the headquarters of the Danish Club, located on the Mijas road. Under the title ‘Hunting the Borderlands in Ronda’, speaker Rafael Anderson will explore the complex Arab heritage of the city of Tajo. Anderson will unravel the symbolism of this ‘citadel in the sky’ and its strategic role as a shifting border between the Nasrid and Christian kingdoms over the centuries.
The day before, on Monday 9th at 16:30 hours, the Teatro Salón Varietés in Fuengirola will host the talk ‘How to steal a million’. Shauna Isaac will analyse the most famous art thefts in history, the motivations of the thieves and the failures that ultimately led to the recovery of masterpieces. Both lectures will last one hour and admission is 10 euros per lecture, payable on the door. These talks represent an excellent opportunity for local residents to connect with Andalusian history and the mysteries of universal creativity.

The Mijas Town Hall has put out to public tender the drafting of the remodelling project for the Las Lagunas Active Participation Centre. The aim of this initiative is to gain space by redistributing the existing areas, as well as making the centre more accessible and user-friendly. The tender for this project has a budget of 60,000 euros.
The centre is located on a 2,233-square-metre plot classified as consolidated urban land with a public facility rating.

There are currently 3,480 users in the Las Lagunas Active Participation Centre, which has become too small. “As soon as the 2026 budget comes into force, the project will be put out to tender to adapt this space to the needs of our senior citizens. We have many activities spread out, even in other facilities such as Las Cañadas. Here we have a very large space, but it is old and currently underused. According to the councillor for Senior Citizens, Silvia Marín (PP), “as soon as the 2026 budget comes into force, the drafting of the project will be put out to tender in order to adapt this space to the needs of our elderly residents. We have many activities spread out, even

Active participation centres, also known as senior citizens’ day centres, offer a range of activities, with the fundamental aim of meeting the recreational needs of older people, as well as providing a socio-cultural framework where they can satisfy their thirst for information and knowledge. Recreational activities are organised on a daily basis, either directly by the Senior Citizens’ Department or at the initiative of the various retirees’ associations, always with the relevant information provided to the technical team.
