Recovery “in record time”
Mijas has transferred 10,000 cubic metres of sand from the La Cala stream to the beaches of Los Cordobeses and El Bombo. This has been done, according to municipal sources, “in record time” to regenerate this area of the Mijas coastline that suffered significant damage during the last west storm. The Mijas Town Hall has assigned dumper trucks, a bulldozer and a 22-tonne machine to carry out the work “very quickly” with the aim of getting “the beaches in perfect condition for the summer season”. / Foto: Amanda Gómez. Ordinary July Plenary Session
The government team and PSOE voted in favour, while Cs abstained / Patricia Murillo.
The government team of the Mijas Town Hall presented last Wednesday 31st in the ordinary plenary session of July the update of the Municipal Ordinance on Traffic and Circulation. According to the councillor for Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), the new document includes issues regarding mobility in Mijas, both for now and for the future, as well as the regulated use of roads and parking spaces in the municipality.
Dawson stressed that the text responds to the new needs of the population “guaranteeing the safe mobility of pedestrians, their coexistence with motor vehicles, also promoting alternative means of

transport, such as collective transport, bicycles or similar”. He also pointed out that “until now we had a completely obsolete ordinance that did not reflect the changes introduced by the 2015 law on traffic, circulation of motor vehicles and road safety”.
In this regard, the spokesman for Cs, José Carlos Martín, agreed on the need to update this ordinance although he did not see the need to include a section on regulated parking, the so-called blue zone, as this system has not yet been implemented in the municipality, “however, in the text we see that there are several articles that perfectly define the charging and rates of the blue zone, but it is not clarified whether there is any intention to implement it, so we prefer to abstain”.
In response, Cuevas Dawson explained that “this government does not intend to start charging for blue zones, but we have regulated it and we have given it structure in the ordinance, taking advantage of the fact that we are going to change it”. Likewise, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), defended that “although we do not contemplate

The Plenary, in an ordinary session in July, has initially approved an amendment of the Municipal Ordinance on Traffic and Circulation. The amendments include the regulation of Personal Mobility Vehicles (article 16 bis) and motorhomes and similar vehicles (article 16 ter)

The minimum age to use them is 15 years of age and they must comply with traffic and road safety regulations.

In areas where they share space with pedestrians, they must alight from PMVs swhenever it is not possible to maintain a mandatory safety distance of at least one metre or when it is not possible to ride in a straight line for five metres continuously. They do not take precedence over pedestrians. The circulation of these vehicles is prohibited on interurban roads, crossings and urban tunnels.

They are not allowed on lanes reserved for public transport and may carry a child up to 7 years of age in an additional approved seat, as long as the driver is of legal age.
The ordinance regulates the areas where they can park The ordinance regulates the areas where they can park and defines the characteristics and services that the exclusive parking areas must have, in case they are enabled, in such a way that their occupation in these areas cannot exceed 72 continuous hours during a period of 10 days in order to guarantee the rotation in these car parks.
Drivers of caravans, motorhomes, camper vans or similar vehicles may stop and park on urban roads under the same conditions and with the same limitations as any other vehicle, as long as there are no open windows that could invade a space larger than the perimeter of the vehicle in motion, chairs, tables, extended awnings or other belongings. The municipal regulations state that it is not relevant that the occupants remain inside the vehicle as long as the activity does not extend to the outside.
PENALTIES
The ordinance includes the lists offences and penalties, which are divided into minor, serious and very serious. For example, it is considered a very serious offence to drive a PMV in a reckless manner or under the influence of alcohol or drugs (500 euros) and a serious offence to use a mobile phone (200 euros).

For his part, the socialist councillor Josele González recalled that the municipality of Mijas began

The item was initially approved with the votes of the government team and the PSOE, and the abstention of Cs. In the final part of the presentation of the proposal, Cuevas Dawson took the opportunity to indicate that “ everything we have done now will be digitalised to help our police officers in their daily work, because it is striking that in the 21st century and in the digital era, officers still fill out the sanctions by hand, for example”.

Mijas asks the Ministry to increase the number of
CIVIL GUARD OFFICERS
A document has been sent requesting more human, material and infrastructure resources to respond to the increase in population and the large size of the municipality
Report by Ed. Dep. / Design: Carmen Martín / Translation: Candela Arroyo
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), accompanied by the councillor for Security, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), announced last Thursday 1st from the Town Hall that on July 25th a document was sent to the Ministry of Interior and the Government Sub-delegation in Malaga requesting an increase in the number of Civil Guard officers in the municipality. In addition, the
The letter notes that, compared to other towns in the area, Mijas is “underresourced”
letter asks for an increase in material resources and infrastructure, such as a new post, to respond and meet the reality of the municipality.
The needs of Mijas
The mayoress explained that the population in Mijas has tripled since 1996, reaching more than 95,000 inhabitants, according to the existing register in the statistics area of the Town Hall. To these must be added residential tourism, which means a high number of national and foreign visitors who are not registered. “We need to reinforce such an important body as the Civil Guard, because the current officers are insufficient to deal with everything that happens in
our municipality. It is only fair that Mijas, like the rest of the municipalities that comprise the Costa del Sol, has what it deserves according to its population; we don’t want to be over them, but neither below. With this letter, we are reaching out to the Ministry of Interior to take action on an issue as important as this”, explained the mayoress.
Circumstances of the town
Mijas has a surface area of 150 square kilometres, which makes it one of the most extensive towns in the province. In the municipality there are urban, rural, coastal areas that “need the attention of both the Civil Guard and the Local Police”, according to the Town Hall. However, despite this situation, the number of Civil Guard officers is 150, which is why the councillor for Security pointed out that the town is “understaffed”, especially when compared to other municipalities in the area with smaller populations and geographically less diverse. “We have relatively few officers in relation to the volume of our population. We are the third largest municipality in the province, but this is not reflected in the number of officers. The comparison is very simple: in 10 km2 and with a smaller population than Mijas, Fuengirola, with more than 85,000 inhabitants, has 300 national police officers. It is not logical considering the numbers and the kilometres. Therefore, we believe that Mijas does not have sufficient resources and we have

informed the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, because a response is needed now”, said Cuevas Dawson.
In addition, the councillor explained that Marbella has more than 400 national police officers for a population of more than 156,000 inhabitants.
“Neither”, as the councillor war-
“The work of the Civil Guard in Mijas is exemplary, but it is undeniable that they do not have the necessary human and material resources. Its particular geography makes it more than necessary for the Civil Guard to be well equipped, a significant increase in its resources is urgently needed”, added Cuevas.
Regarding infrastructures, both the mayoress and the councillor recalled that for years, land has been at the disposal of the Government for the creation of a new main post for the Civil Guard, as
the current barracks, according to municipal sources, “is obsolete and lack of space for the officers to live in”.
Calls to the Local Police
During his intervention, the councillor reported that the Mijas Local Police receives “daily” calls from the Civil Guard requesting collaboration “due to the lack of means” to attend to emergencies: “In addition to this request for assistance, only from January to July 2024, our switchboard has dealt with 2,400 more calls than in the same period on the previous year. This increase in the demand for services demonstrates the imperative need to reinforce the number of Civil Guard officers in our municipality”.
“We are talking about an issue as important as security, so we hope that the Ministry of Interior is aware that the situation in Mijas is not the same as it was thirty years ago. In addition, the officers who serve in our municipality deserve to have the best services and facilities, so we are willing to cede the land for this much needed new barracks”, concluded the mayoress.

A traditional beach bar, Los Moreno
The establishment organised the inauguration party on August 1st

The beach bar Los Moreno celebrated on Thursday 1st of August its inauguration party with many friends, neighbours and tourists who are on holiday in La Cala de Mijas.
The event was also attended by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), along with members of her government team, who did not want to miss the opportunity to congratulate the owner of the establishment, Salva Moreno for the reform carried out, complying with the regulations of the Junta de Andalucía, as well as to wish him “great success in the present and in the future because these types of establishments create a lot of work in our town, as well as atten-
ding to many people, it is practically our showcase”, said the councillor.
Some years have gone by before this well-known beach bar in La Cala is back in action, but if there was one thing that the owner was clear about, it was that he wanted to “keep the same, the essence of the restaurant, on the sand, and offering the same food”. In 1996 his father started the business alone, running what was then an ice-cream kiosk and the hammocks. Today, his son continues with the family business, but has adapted it to the times, to the changes that have taken place in La Cala.
Alejandra López was one of the tourists who attended the inauguration party and expressed that what she likes the most about the
new establishment is “the view, it’s amazing, the atmosphere, it’s very nice”. Another attendee, Mena Estrella , emphasised that “in La Cala de Mijas everything is magical. Here we are very well located, very happy and you can see the atmosphere, amazing”.

The pairing is essential to enhance the wine, but also to showcase the local gastronomy.

THE SAND REGENERATION
has been completed work on two beaches in Mijas
In total, 10,000 m3 of sand have been transferred from the La Cala stream to Los Cordobeses and El Bombo
The councillor for Beaches in Mijas, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), visited the Los Cordobeses and El Bombo beaches on Tuesday 30th to check on the work carried out after the last west storms that hit the municipality. The councillor pointed out that “nine days ago we had another problem caused by the west wind in the area of El Bombo, so we started working immediately with dumper trucks, a bulldozer and a 22 tonne machine, taking
the sand that had been deposited at the mouth of the La Cala stream and moving it to El Bombo to regenerate the area, all so that the beaches are in perfect condition for the summer season”.
The west winds have been very strong on the Costa del Sol this
year, which is why the Town Hall has had to carry out this work very quickly to alleviate the damage suffered in the height of the summer season. Specifically, “we have moved 10,000 cubic metres of sand in the last nine days, although during the first three days we still
had west wind and the sea was a bit rough. We have had to open a way to reach the area of El Bombo and extract all the sand from the area of the La Cala stream and also from the Nanet beach, in order to regenerate this area,” said Gómez Teruel.
The work carried out was more than just the sand transfer, as “the first and most important thing was to protect the sewage systems. On the El Bombo beach, the sewage well was exposed at a
height of almost three metres, so it was important to prevent the storm from breaking it, causing sewage spillages and beach closures. On the other hand, we had to preserve and maintain our main tourist attraction, which is the coastal path”, said the councillor.
The Town Hall expressed its gratitude for the fast intervention of the General Directorate of the Coast, which granted the necessary permits to carry out the work.
