With the Torreón in the background and the sea at their backs, the people of La Cala were informed of the programme for their festivities, a fair that will fill the town with light and colour from the 24th to the 28th of July. A lifelong Caleña, businesswoman and member of one of the most deeply-rooted families in La Cala, Lola Arroyo was in charge of giving the proclamation for the festivities. A tradition lover and a regular at the fair, Arroyo looked back to remember the most beautiful moments of this celebration, while she thanked ‘life, for every day that dawns and for being able to enjoy La Cala and its people’, and concluded by saying ‘Long live La Cala de Mijas, long live its fair and long live its people’. After her speech, the town crier, together with the mayoress Ana Mata, unveiled the official poster of the fair, while the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín, described the activities and concerts that can be enjoyed during these festive days / Photo: Amanda Gómez.

La Cala de Mijas took on a festive atmosphere on Thursday 18th.
The Plaza del Torreón was the stage where Lola Arroyo, from La Cala de Mijas, gave an emotional speech before unveiling the poster for the festivities, a design by the municipal company that publishes this newspaper, Mijas Comunicación, together with the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP).
The councillor applauded Arroyo’s speech and the work that she and her family have done for La Cala: “We are proud to have such an extended family, a family with such deep roots, a family that has made La Cala de Mijas great and that thanks to their contribution, to the effort that your grandparents once made, La Cala is great

today”. The commitment that Lola Arroyo has for the seaside town is such that when she found out about becoming the town crier she was “scared and excited”, but she felt that speaking about the fair “was an honour and a reason to be proud”.
Dolores Arroyo, also known as Lola, was in charge of the proclamation at an event held next to the Torreón where the poster for the festivities, which will be held from the 24th to the 28th of July, was also presente
Involved in the life of the municipality
The town crier went back in time to talk about her grandparents and her family, recalling how La Cala used to be. “My father, Antonio, also known as ‘el pelón’, and some of my uncles, began carrying sand from the beach with mules for the construction of the first villas, which were beginning to be built on the coast”, she recalled, as she also remembered a manila shawl that her mother bought for her in instalments and which she proudly exhibited during the opening speech as well as her collection of books of the La Cala fairs, the first one from 1974, from half a century ago. That was the beginning of her journey through the La Cala fair, both day and night, with all its complementary activities.
“It has been a long time since La Cala de Mijas Fair had an opening speech and a great fair always has to be preceded by a great proclamation”, added Mata, who considered
that La Cala fair “is the fair of all the summer holidaymakers who come to visit us”, but also the fair of “our traditions”: “La Cala de Mijas is the best place to enjoy not only the beaches but also the traditions”, said the mayoress who thanked the the Department for Festivities for elaborating the programme and Mijas Comunicacion for the elaboration of the poster.
speech a video was played showing old photos of La Cala, its fair, and the family of the town crier, who was picked up from her home in the Bulevar Caleño and taken to the Plaza del Torreón in a horse-drawn carriage.
After the unveiling of the poster, the councillor for Festivities, Silvia Marín (PP), gave a preview of the programme for the fair, which will close on Sunday 28th of July, accompanied by the festivities board, whom she called to join her on stage. “I would like to thank all of you, the Junta de Festejos, who are helping me to put together this programme for the fair”, she said.
The proclamation was preceded by the dances of the UP groups led by Víctor Rojas and during her
The councillor assured that the aim was to create a programme for all audiences. The 24th will be Children’s Day. That same day will be the inauguration of the artistic lighting at 22:30 hours. The day will be completed by the Contest of King and Queen of the Fair.
On Thursday 25th the Celebratory Dinner for our Elders will be one of the main events. On Fri-
day 26th the daytime fair will get underway at 13:00 hours. In the evening, there will be a performance for children and the election of the children and baby king and queen. At 23 hours there will be a performance by Rock and Roll Star and Jocker Rock Band.
On Saturday 27th there will be a play centre service for children in the morning, popular games, the day fair and performances, while Keen Levy will be performing in the evening. On Sunday 28th Maki and María Artés and Nyno Vargas will perform.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (2nd left) presented a gift to the town crier, Lola Arroyo, who has always stood out for her great involvement in the life of La Cala; in addition, her family has also maintained a strong connection with the social and cultural initiatives in La Cala, promoting many of them, especially those related to young people. But if there is one thing that stands out for the town crier, it is her involvement in charitable causes, without forgetting the great affection she feels for the festivities in La Cala.

The Junta grants the tourism sector
to mitigate the effects of the drought
The mayoress of Mijas met on Monday 15th with entrepreneurs from the municipality to inform them about these subsidies
Report by

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía announced last week that they will finance energy efficiency and circular economy projects for tourism businesses to tackle the current drought situation.
Murillo / Design: C. Martín The grants amount to 40 million euros and are an incentive aimed at greater water reuse.
On Monday 15th, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), met in La Cala with entrepreneurs from the tourism sector to provide them with this information. “It is a sector that is constantly making
The Town Hall installs awnings in about thirty public spaces in Mijas 40 million euros
The contract for the awning installation will be valid until 2027, with an investment of more than 860,000 euros for the four years
Ed. Dep. / P.M. The Mijas Town Hall, through the Department for Public Roads, is proceeding with the installation of awnings in more than thirty spaces distributed among the three urban areas of the municipality. The sunshades, due to their characteristics, withstand the high temperatures of the municipality that make the provision of such elements necessary.
The installation is being carried out after the awarding of a public contract which will be in force until 2027 and whose value amounts to 862,864.18 euros. The agreement includes the rental, installation, dismantling and maintenance of the awnings in different streets, parks and squares to make these spaces more comfortable in the high temperatures. At the same time, the measure is intended to boost pedestrian traffic in these areas, fa-

the economy of our town”, she said. In order to facilitate participation and to ensure that the greatest number of entrepreneurs can apply for this aid, two lines of subsidies have been established depending on the type of establishment: line 1, dedicated to accommodation businesses and other services related to tourism, and line 2, aimed at restaurant businesses.
Mata added that it is “a great opportunity for the sector, to present those projects that they consider interesting and, above all, necessary. The drought made us realise that water is a scarce resource and that we have to put all our energy and our will into creating the necessary infrastructures so that we don’t waste water”.
Water reuse, flow reduction, adaptation of infrastructure to avoid excess heat/cold or the installation of green roofs are some of the eligible projects. This is why the business sector has welcomed the information. This was stated by the delegate of the Mijas beach entrepreneurs, Carlos Morales, who said that the initiative “is very interesting, given that we are in the middle of a severe drought, so I believe that this call for subsidies will improve our businesses and will pay 65 percent of the projects”.
The application for the subsidies is 100 percent telematic through the Virtual Office of the Regional Ministry. The estimated deadline is 20 working days from the publication of the call.

“We understand that this is a measure to make Mijas a more comfortable town”, explained on Friday 12th the councillor for Public Roads, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP).

Meanwhile, in La Cala it is being carried out in the streets Marbella, Torremolinos, Butibamba park, El Barco, Los Sentidos-Los Claveles, in the boulevard area and in the branch office square. The area covered with shade will increase progressively year after year. Thus, in 2024 there will be 4,921 square metres covered, which will increase to 6,883m2 in the second year, reaching 7,318 in the last two years of the contract. As the councillor indicated, the awnings will be maintained until autumn.

Government, Junta, DiputaciÓn AND Town Halls
agree on a roadmap
on the coastal train
The Ministry of Transport is committed to start the feasibility report on the corridor and to put the informative study out to tender in 2025
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, the Junta de Andalucía, the Diputación de Málaga and 18 mayors from the coast of Málaga and Cadiz met on Wednesday 17th to look for solutions to the mobility problems that exist on the Costa del Sol. The meeting, which was described as “landmark” and which create great media expentacy, not in vain concerns a population of 2.7 million people, concluded with important commitments.
BEACHES
Thus, the Secretary of State of the Ministry, José Antonio Santano, began his speech by addressing the agreements reached on the coastal train: “I want to clearly show the commitment of the Government of Spain, as I have expressed in the meeting, and of the Ministry to start taking steps in terms of feasibility and informative studies that may lead to a specific train model for the Costa del Sol corridor”. The Secretary explained that the feasibility study will be initiated, followed by the tendering
of the informative study in 2025. However, the meeting also agreed on the creation of a working group to define, prior to the tender, how the train model will be, together with the Junta and the surrounding municipalities. “Mijas is one of the locations where it has been studied and considered the possibility of a railway connection with the rest of the municipalities, which currently runs from Fuengirola to Malaga, but which could also reach Nerja and even the Campo de Gibraltar”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana
The Coastal Path is closed at El Bombo beach for safety reasons
Ed. Dep. / C.M. The councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), visited the beach of El Bombo on Tuesday 16th to check the damage suffered after the recent west storms. There he announced that the stretch of the Coastal Path that runs along this point will remain closed until the necessary sand has been brought in and safety is guaranteed.
This area, as the councillor explained, is always” heavily affected’ by
storms and currently the beach has a two-metre sinkhole which, as well as impeding its use, has even left sewerage in the open air. ‘The decision to cut 200 metres of the path is absolutely for safety reasons and, of course, we ask the public to be patient and to respect the signposts, because walking along this area is dangerous”, he added.
In fact, it is important to remember that it was last March when sand contributions were made in this
same area but, given the strength of the recent storms, it is necessary to repeat the action.
Gómez also reported that he is in contact with the Directorate General for the Coast and Sea, under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, to carry out the necessary sand contributions. The work began on Wednesday 17th of July and will be carried out between 23:00 and 8:00 hours until Sunday 21st, if the
Mata (PP), who was present at the meeting and who valued the public transport.
Likewise, a second working group was set up to discuss shortand medium-term measures on mobility, an issue that was also discussed at the meeting, with particular emphasis on the problems of traffic congestion on the A-7. Thus, in a more immediate way, other commitments were defined with regard to the dual carriageway and the AP-7, on which possible discounts “that could improve or facilitate traffic flow” will be analysed, said Santano, who linked these possible subsidies “to a more global, more comprehensive approach, also improving urban and interurban public transport, along the whole corridor of the Costa del Sol”. However, he reminded that it must be taken into account that the AP-7 has a concession. From Mijas, this last commitment has also been valued. In this regard, Mata stressed “the need to start analysing the situation we are experiencing,
both on the motorway, the AP-7, and on the A-7 dual carriageway”. Thus, the mayoress of Mijas mentioned the “new roads that need to be studied” and emphasised “the possibility of giving accessibility to all those urbanisations and towns that are growing in Mijas”.
Institutional collaboration
The meeting highlighted the need to work together. “Today we have laid on the table the fact that we can reach agreements and consensus. The Andalusian Regional Government was clear that it was important to address the issue of mobility, starting with the coastal train”, said the Andalusian Regional Minister of Public Works, Rocío Blanco
The president of the Málaga Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, considered that “the priority was to look for a solution, which we know will be a long-term one, for the coastal train and to study this train model”. Salado also considered consensus to be ‘’essential‘’.
weather conditions allow it. In anticipation, the Town Hall had stockpiled sand at the mouth of the stream in La Cala, which is why the councillor assured that they are prepared to start the intervention as soon as possible and in the most appropriate way. In addition, a meeting is scheduled for next
week with the Directorate General of the Coast to address the situation of the Mijas coastline. “El Bombo is a great example of the situation that our coastline is suffering due to the lack of a comprehensive beach stabilisation plan, as the mayor, Ana Mata, always insists”, concluded the councillor.

The Tourism Department of Mijas Town Hall has programmed four evenings for Fridays 19th of July, 2nd, 16th and 23rd of August, all of them starting at 22:00. Local artists Pino and Pino and Eva Sedeño make up the line-up for this summer.
The first performance will be on Friday 19th of July, with the duo formed by Andrés Pino and his son, also called Andrés, who will take us through the history of Spanish music. Since their founding in 1977, they have captivated audiences with their talent and passion. Their performance will not only include the guitar but also instruments such as the ‘charango’ (small guitar), whose strong and energetic sound will provide a unique dimension to their performance.

Mijas celebrates a jazz night at the auditorium
The Tourism Department organised on Saturday this evening of concerts by the Costa Jazz Quartet, the Red Trio and the Suzette Jazz Quintet
C.M. The Jazz Night filled the Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium with good music. This is an initiative organised by the Tourism Department of the Mijas Town Hall with the aim of boosting visits to the village and offering more leisure alternatives to locals and tourists. “In Mijas we offer alternatives for people to come and enjoy our surroundings, our restaurants, our shops, in Mijas there is also leisure in addition to: beach, sun, strolls along Mijas Pueblo...”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who considered that on summer nights like last Saturday “going up to Mijas means being in a paradise”, especially if accompanied by “this music that has many fans”.
The councillor for Tourism of the Mijas Town Hall, Fran-
cisco Jerez (Vox), explained that “this type of show attracts people from the municipality and from all over the Costa del Sol”. In addition, Jerez wanted to emphasize that the groups that formed the lineup of the Jazz Night are “pretty good”: Costa Jazz Quarted, Red Trio and Suzette Jazz Quintet. The vocalist of the latter group, Suzette Moncrief, said that she would be performing standard songs, “the classics from the Bible and the encyclopaedia of jazz”, as well as “a little bit of personalised jazz”.
Jazz classics
For his part, the saxophonist of Costa Jazz Quarter, Jesús Mata, said that his group’s repertoire was varied: “traditional jazz standards, a little bit of classical, which is what we usually do; we will also play some Latin

tunes and some blues because we know that you have quite an important blues festival and we also wanted to play a couple of love songs for that audience”.
His band mate, pianist Jacinto Rodríguez , was delighted with the municipal auditorium and the “fabulous reception” they said to have received.
The music of these artists attracted a very enthusiastic audience. “It is very relaxing, very intuitive, it takes you back to special moments”, said Marcos Merino, one of the attendees. In addition to the music, attendees such as Mari Cuesta highlighted the venue of this “cool” and “moonlit” Jazz Night.
The mayoress of Mijas Ana Mata; the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez, and the councillor of the government team, Mario Bravo attended this Jazz Night, a project of the Tourism Department to diversify the leisure offer of the municipality during the summer nights.
