At 20:30, an hour earlier than usual, which was one of the new features, the patron saint was taken out onto the streets. “We believe that Mijas has a very special and beautiful light at this time of day. Seeing the Virgin in the last rays of the sun is a wonderful sight, and then night falls as we make our way through the streets”, explained the commissioner of the Brotherhood of the Virgen de La Peña, Manuel Díaz, who added that “it is exciting to see how the people of Mijas throw themselves into it”.
The parish priest of Mijas, Hermán Marcel Lunar, rang the bell of honour on the float and admitted to being “very moved” to be able to share the transfer with the people of Mijas for the first time. “When you see a town respond like this to the love of God through our mother the Virgin, it makes you even more emotional”. After the ringing, the 40 local police officers lifted the Virgen de la Peña into the air at the doors of her home, the El Compás Hermitage.
Thus began the traditional transfer, as it does every 29th of August, accompanied by numerous parishioners, neighbours, visitors and the terral wind. On a mantle made up of 500 white tuberoses, palm fronds and ferns, the Virgen de la Peña, with her white dress and red mantle embroidered in gold, wore her new crown for this special occasion, an original replica of the one lost in the 1930s, made by the Montenegro metalwork workshop and donated by the Mijas Town Hall to mark the 75th anniversary of the brotherhood. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), thanked all those who support the patron saint, “today is a very special day, accompanying the Virgen de la Peña, who has watched over many Mijas residents throughout its history”.
The Las Lagunas Music Association led the procession, followed by the Mijas Music Band behind the float. The floral offering from the Town Hall, political parties, associations, clubs, brotherhoods, parish groups and families provided the finishing touch.

Tourist Day will be celebrated on September 24th
In this way, the Mijas Town Hall thanks all tourists for visiting the town during their holidays
C. Luque / J. Perea
On Wednesday, 24th of September, Mijas will once again celebrate the traditional Tourist Day in Mijas Pueblo, our most visited town by foreigners and visitors. It is the municipality’s way of thanking them for choosing to spend their holidays here. The Department of Tourism will once again mark this special day for all towns where tourism is a main source of income.
According to the councillor for the area, Francisco Jérez (Vox), “it is our way of thanking all those who have chosen us over this past year, especially this summer, as some are still here with us. This day is celebrated worldwide and we also celebrate it locally”, adding that “last year the paella ran out in just an hour, which shows how well received this initiative is. Many attendees come on organised excursions, including cruise passengers who take advantage of their stop to visit Mijas Pueblo”.
This day, said Jerez, is also a way of “reinforcing the image of
Mijas as a welcoming, diverse and lively destination”. The event will take place in the Virgen de la Peña square at 12 noon. There will be a flamenco show, followed by free paella for “around 500 people” at approximately 13:30 hours, said Jerez.

visitors this season”, explained the
In the absence of official occupancy data for July and August, which will be released shortly, the summer balance in Mijas is very positive. “The summer has been very good. Mijas Pueblo has been full and La Cala has also been busy. In addition, the concerts we have organised during the summer have been very successful and we are very satisfied with the number of visitors this season”, explained the councillor. Jerez said that “while other municipalities have seen a decline in average spending per visitor, we have not had that problem here. The hotels have been full, La Cala has been as busy as ever, and in Mijas Pueblo the buses have been running non-stop”.
The leisure programme organised by Tourism has helped to boost the season: “There have been four very successful concerts and this Tourist Day will be the culmination before we move into the autumn season. From spring onwards, we will resume the weekly concert programme in the gazebo in the Virgen de la Peña Square”

The renovation of Río Darro Street enters its final stage
The road, located in Las Lagunas, has been open to traffic for weeks, but the ornamentation works in the area are still ongoing
Report: I. Pérez and B. Martín / Design: I.M. / Translation: C. Arroyo
After fully reopening it to traffic a few weeks ago, the Mijas Town Hall is now continuing with various decorative works on Calle Río Darro, in Las Lagunas. This road has been completely remodelled, “with new lighting and pavements in keeping with the aesthetics of the rest of the municipality, and the important thing is that we have not lost any parking spaces in the area”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), on Tuesday 2nd, during a visit to the site accompanied by the
councillor for Parks and Gardens, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP).
Among the work carried out by municipal workers is the beautification of the new roun-
dabout created on this street, where magnolia trees have been planted, “we have added more trees than before, when there were ficus trees”, said

THE MAYORESS
TAKES NOTE OF THE residents’ requests
Together with the councillor Daniel Gómez Teruel, Ana Mata used her visit to Río Darro Street to gather residents’ impressions
Diego Reiné , for example, requested “benches for citizens, especially for the elderly, who need to rest while walking, and we have been told that they will be provided, so we are very grateful for that”. Other residents also appreciated
Gómez Teruel, explaining that “have planted more than twenty almencinos, which are native trees with roots that do not lift the paving, as happened previously, and the best thing is that they grow quickly, so sooner rather than later we will be aa-
the installation of underground recycling points and the removal of architectural barriers, while Jenny Maldonado said that this street has become safer after its remodelling, “now the street looks less dark and we are grateful for that, as it greatly improves the image of our neighbourhood, it is something we should be thankful for because everything has turned out very well”.
In this regard, the mayoress of Mijas stated that “streets are not only for parking our vehicles, but also for enjoying and walking along them, so these are issues that we have noted and will address from the Town Hall, through Operational Services and the various municipal departments”.
ble to enjoy their shade”. During the visit, both Mata and Gómez Teruel supervised the final touches carried out by the company responsible for the renovation, for which an investment of almost 900,000 euros has been allocated.
I.Pérez. Throughout September, the Mijas Tourist Office is hosting a new exhibition by artisans from the Mijas Craft Association who, on this occasion, are dedicated to carving wooden utensils and artistically binding books, notebooks and diaries, among other items.
J.J. Martín Quiroga and Seita Van Den Eeden are the artists who, until the 30th, will be showing residents and visitors the work they create. The councillor for Tourism at the Mijas
Town Hall, Francisco Jerez (Vox), explained on Wednesday 3rd during the inauguration of the exhibition that “having artisans of this calibre in our municipality is a source of pride, as it enriches cultural life and allows visitors to enjoy unique handmade pieces, an authentic reflection of our tradition”. He added that craftsmanship “is not just a trade, but part of our identity” and that opening the Tourist Office to these exhibitions “makes it easier for residents and tourists to share this legacy in a lively and accessible space”.
Craftswoman Seita van den Eeden, who specialises in bookbinding, said she has been involved in art all her life and has been working in Mijas for over a decade. According to the artist, each book she makes “is unique
and often becomes a gift for special occasions such as weddings or births”, while emphasising that, for her, “it is a way of connecting with people and sharing what I do”.
For his part, J.J. Martín Quiroga, who is back at the Tourist Office after the success of his first exhibition, stressed that the support of the association and the Town Hall “helps you grow” as a craftsman. Regarding his work process, he explained that “it’s not like a factory, where you put in a material and get a mass-produced product, but rather a slow process in which
each piece has its own rhythm”. Specialising in kitchen items made from carpentry scraps, he pointed out that wood “is a unique material that tells you what it wants to be”, while assuring that “you learn more from a mistake than from a success”.
The councillor took the opportunity to invite residents and visitors to visit the Tourist Office during September, including during the fair, convinced that “they will discover a world of craftsmanship that is still practised as it was in the past and that is worth knowing and preserving”.

They remind everyone of the need to respect the Cleanliness Ordinance
Ed. Dept. / Info: C. Luque / Design: I. Merino / Translation: C. Arroyo
The Mijas Town Hall, through the Cleanliness Department, has called on citizens to help keep the municipality clean. In summer, when the population practically doubles, it is necessary to take extreme measures to ensure that the town is in the best possible condition, “for which citizen collaboration is essential”, according to the Town Hall.
Following a coordination meeting between the councillor for Cleanliness, Eloy Belmonte (Vox), and the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), both made this public appeal with the aim of raising awareness among citizens. The mayoress emphasised “essential” issues such as respecting waste disposal times, not littering on public roads and picking up pet excrement, as well as diluting their urine with water. Regarding pruning waste, she insisted on the need to take it to the designated collection points and not leave it on the streets.

of the operators as “tireless” describes the work
The mayoress, Ana Mata, praised the work carried out by the operators in refurbishing the city, describing it as “tireless”. She also outlined specific measures, such as the “launch of an ambitious” plan to progressively replace a total of 1,500 paper and packaging recycling bins by next April.
Mijas records the lowest unemployment rate in the last 17 years
Ed. Dept. Last August, Mijas recorded a total of 5,280 unemployed people, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 4.09%. These figures are good news, as they mark the lowest unemployment level since November 2008. Furthermore, compared to the previous month of July, the number of unemployed fell by 89 people. In terms of registration data for July, the most recent month for which statistics are available, Mijas has a total of 19,346 people registered with Social Security and 8,855 self-employed workers.
Assessment
As the Spanish saying goes: “‘The cleanest person is not the one who cleans the most, but the one who makes the least mess’. That is why it is essential that we all respect the Cleanliness Ordinance and avoid anti-social behaviour that only damages our image. By working together, we can achieve the best for Mijas”, she explained.
Along the same lines, Belmonte pointed out that “in Mijas we have a great team that works every day to keep our
streets in the best condition, but their efforts need everyone’s cooperation”. The councillor stressed that “respecting schedules and following basic rules are simple gestures that make a difference”.
Belmonte also explained that “it is essential to be responsible and show civic-mindedness, because keeping Mijas clean not only improves our quality of life, it also reinforces the image we offer as a tourist destination”.
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), stated that “these are very good figures that show that in Mijas, citizens have opportunities to work and find employment. Most of these are in the service sector and tourism-related industries, which are very important here. The mayoress also explained that “we are going to consider what actions we can take to ensure that all those who are looking for work have the opportunity to train and find a job”.
