Excitement for the fair is already building, and this was evident on the night of Friday 23rd at the Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium, where Juan Francisco Aguilera, town crier for the festivities, delivered a truly ‘chichilargo’ speech, full of nostalgia, joy and emotion, to officially announce the start of the big celebrations in honour of the town’s patron saint. The fair also features an official poster, designed by photographer Carlos Hevilla, and, of course, a programme of events for all ages, running from the 6th to the 11th of September. Highlights include free concerts at the municipal booth, the daytime fair in La Muralla, the running of inflatable bulls, chocolate and buñuelos, Children’s Day with rides at reduced prices, and the procession of the Virgen de la Peña on the 8th September / Alberto Lago. The first official event of the Mijas Fair took place last Friday, 23rd, at the Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium, where Juanfra Aguilera, a native of Mijas, delivered the proclamation and presented the poster and programme for the festivities

The Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium was packed for the occasion, with the Mijas Music Band playing lively tunes that had the audience clapping along and even dancing in their seats... This was how the evening began, which Juan Francisco Aguilera Villanueva, the town crier for the 2025 Mijas Fair, would later describe as “a dream, an indescribable moment”
With the nerves that come with the responsibility of being the town crier for his town’s festivities, Juanfra (as he is widely known) took to the stage after the two songs performed by the Mijas Music Band, to which he is closely connected, as his grandfather was one of the founders and he himself was also
a member. His proclamation began with words of thanks, especially to his family and to the Town Hall for placing their trust in him for this role.
“I can feel proud to have grown up in this magnificent town, surrounded by good people, and I can say with complete confidence that I am very proud to be a ‘chichilargo’”, said Aguilera, who during his

proclamation took us on a journey through his memories of the fair.
Juanfra also invited the Mijas Music Band back on stage and even played the trumpet himself to perform the Hymn to the Virgen de la Peña, composed by the former director of the band, Francisco Aguilar. He also involved the audience, with a group daring to come on stage to dance with the speaker, who defended
values such as respect and equality in his speech.
“It’s a dream, right now it’s indescribable. I had already received expressions of affection, support and happiness before the proclamation, but now I’m on cloud nine, I feel very loved”, said the town
crier as he stepped off the stage. “I wanted a proclamation that would make us laugh, but I also wanted to address important issues such as mental health, happiness, remembering those who are no longer with us and recapturing our childhood. I hope people have been able

After Aguilera’s speech, it was time to unveil the poster for the 2025 Mijas Fair, designed by Mijas photographer José Carlos Hevilla
M.J.G./ A.L. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), together with the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín (PP), the town crier, and Hevilla, unveiled the official poster for the 2025 Fair and Festivities. “I was inspired by a couple of very pretty girls from Mijas, Adriana and Blanca, who are from the village, and what better image than the most beautiful balcony in Mijas during the daytime fair, where I always see people queuing to have their photo taken”, said the designer, who also explained that “I changed the colours in the photo to reflect the typical colours of the Mijas flag: the green of our mountains, the blue of the sea, and the white of the clouds and our village houses”.
“A beautiful poster, featuring two women from Mijas who, although their faces cannot be seen, are part of the very essence of Mijas”, said the mayoress, adding that “we can be proud of the 2025 fair poster designed by José Carlos Hevilla”.

He gave us a very entertaining evening with lots of humour, because that’s what Juanfra is known for: he knows how to entertain people”.
Finally, Juanfra highlighted how he plans to experience the fair and invited everyone to enjoy it:
“With the enthusiasm of a child, as long as you keep a childlike spirit to enjoy the fair, the fair will always be magical”. “True happiness comes when the spi-
rit of childhood and memories sweep you away and take hold of you”, emphasised the announcer, who concluded his speech with: “Long live Mijas! Long live its fair! And long live those who make this the best fair in the world, who are none other than each and every one of you (addressing the audience)”, who responded with a long and warm standing ovation. The event was closed by Malaga singer Tamara Jerez

The Mijas Town Hall, through its Tourism Department, invites residents and visitors to enjoy Jazz Night, an event to be held on Saturday, 30th of August, at 22:00 hours, at the Miguel González Berral Municipal Auditorium.
Admission will be charitable, through the donation of non-perishable food items which, as in previous editions, will be given to Cáritas to support the most needy families in the municipality.
The line-up will be headed by

The councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), highlighted the importance of this event in the summer cultural agenda: “Mijas is once again committed
to live music with an event that brings together the best of jazz, in a unique setting such as our municipal auditorium, and with added value: solidarity”.
Jerez also emphasised the charitable nature of the evening: “Everyone who attends will not only enjoy an unforgettable cultural experience, but will also be helping many families in the municipality who are going through

difficult times. We want culture, as well as being enjoyed, to also serve to reach out to those who need it most”.
The councillor recalled that this formula has already been applied in other cultural events with great success: “In previous concerts, the response has been exemplary, with massive participation that has translated into real help channelled through Cáritas. We are convinced that we will experience this again on this occasion”.
The doors of the auditorium will open at 21:00 hours to facilitate the entry of attendees.

Alleged perpetrator of six forest fires in the province of Málaga arrested
Editorial Department. The Civil Guard, as part of Operation Moonwalker, has arrested a person on six counts of arson for fires set in several locations in the province of Málaga. The investigation began after a total of six fires broke out between the 2nd of July and the 24th of August in areas of high ecological value in Mijas, Ojén, Alhaurín de la Torre and three of them in Alhaurín el Grande.
The fires were classified as attempted arson because they were quickly detected and extinguished by the fire brigade and the Infoca firefighting service before they could spread and cause further damage, as they
rantees the safety of all residents and visitors, paying special attention to access control and mobility around the fairground”.
Regarding Civil Protection, a group of 20 to 30 volunteers will be mobilised, present throughout the fair to provide logistical and health support, assist attendees and work in coordination with the other security and emergency services.
For his part, the councillor for Firefighters and Civil Protection,
were set in areas close to large stretches of woodland and urban centres.
The necessary steps were taken to clarify the facts, and a pattern was detected: the fires occurred during daylight hours and in locations that were difficult to access. As a result of the investigation, an individual was identified who had been in the area at the time of all the fires, and evidence suggested he could be the perpetrator. Consequently, steps were taken to locate and arrest him, and he was found on the 24th of August in a motorhome where he had been living in a beach area in the city of Malaga.
Francisco Jerez (Vox), explained that “the role of volunteers is essential to cover an event as popular as the Mijas Fair. Their emergency support and assistance work complements the technical deployment of the Fire and Rescue Service (SEIS), ensuring immediate intervention in the event of an incident”. The SEIS in Mijas will have a permanent team of four members on duty, consisting of a firefighter corporal as commander and three firefighters.

The Basic Income programme increases its budget by three million euros
Report by María José Gómez / Design: I.M. / Translation: C. Arroyo
At its regular plenary session in August, the Mijas Town Hall unanimously approved a budget increase of three million euros for the municipal company Mijas Servicios Complementarios which runs the Basic Income programme. “We want to increase the budget at this plenary session so that the company can have these funds available before the end of September and can continue with its activities”, explained
Clearing,
street cleaning and beach cleaning are some of the tasks carried out by the beneficiaries of the programme
the councillor for Finance, Mario Bravo (PP), who is also the managing director of the company, alongside councillor Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox). The planned supplementary credit will be covered by the Treasury surplus.
The government team presented the motion as urgent. Bravo emphasised the programme’s importance: “The company is essential for two reasons: on one hand, it guarantees a minimum income for unemployed residents of Mijas who have been registered for more than five years; on the other, it carries out complementary activities for the Town Hall”, highlighting, among other things, “the vital work of clearing vegetation to prevent fires”.

MIJAS ASKS THE JUNTA AND THE GOVERNMENT for more resources for students with ASD
M.J.G. One of the items unanimously approved at the plenary session on Wednesday 27th was the motion presented by the Vox municipal group calling for “the necessary educational, public, free and professional support to be guaranteed for students with autism spectrum disorder”.
The aim of this measure, according to Vox spokesperson, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, is to “guarantee equal opportunities in education and also to offer support to the families of children with ASD. Education is not a privilege or a favour from governments, it is a right and the key that unlocks the future for every child. We are talking about a group that needs very special attention, students with autism spectrum disorder, known as ASD”, added the councillor. The motion calls on the regional and central governments to assess the situation in order to update and strengthen mesures to ensure public and professionalised support.
acknowledged the important work carried out by Basic Income employees. Socialist councillor Laura Moreno stressed that this is “a basic tool for the Town Hall” and raised several criticisms and questions about the motion. “Why has this change been made so late, considering that the request was submitted on June 4th, and why haven’t the staff from the last call for applications been hired?”, asked Moreno, who also questioned whether or not the Town Hall can “guarantee the payment of salaries to all Basic Income staff before the 5th of October so that
these people can plan ahead and not end up in the same situation as the home care service staff”. Bravo, who recalled that the Basic Income programme was launched in 2012 when the PP was in power in the town, benefiting some 600 people annually since then, replied that “we do everything possible every month to ensure that everyone is paid on time. I believe this is something you know, and everyone is aware of it; so I don’t see any problem with the September salaries continuing to be paid on time, just like every other month”.
August ordinary plenary session
The mayoress highlights the payment outstanding invoices to the SAD
A.Lago. During the August plenary session, the payment of outstanding invoices to the Home Care Service (SAD) was approved, amounting to 1.4 million euros.
“We must remember that we inherited a home care system with serious shortcomings, not only in terms of compliance with the specifications but also in the service itself. For this reason, we had to draw up an emergency contract to ensure care for all users”, recalled the mayoress, Ana Mata. After the session, the mayoress stressed the importance of this measure.
“We have brought almost all of those invoices to the plenary session, with only the month of July still to be paid to the company awarded this emergency contract, so that they do not face any problems when it comes to paying the workers who provide the service”, she said. This sum is part of the almost 1.9 million euros in invoices approved by the Executive at the last plenary session.
For his part, the spokesperson for Ciudadanos, José Carlos Martín, also questioned some aspects of the motion. “What is surprising is that you are bringing this up in August and as a matter of urgency”, said the councillor, adding that “it is August, what are you going to do with the 54 million euros you have left unspent? I’ll tell you before you answer, ‘nothing’, because you don’t know what to do with the money”.
“What are we going to do with the 54 million that we have not allocated or committed? Well, the same thing you did with the
100 million, not spend it, with one difference, that you took a photo saying what you were going to spend it on and then you didn’t spend it”, replied Mario Bravo, who stressed that “I believe that, out of a sense of responsibility, we should not spend all our savings in one year,” adding that “it is good to spread it out over time, because what seems like a great idea today, such as building a 27 million euros park, might tomorrow seem better spent on social housing”.
The motion was finally approved with the unanimous vote of the entire corporation.
