The mayoress, Ana Mata, announces that the award of this contract, being carried out for the first time in the municipality, is imminent

With the aim of preserving the mountains and preventing possible forest fires, the municipal government team put the maintenance service for the Sierra de Mijas out to tender in May for a total of 1.2 million euros. The contract is expected to be awarded shortly. “This is the first time a contract has been put out to tender for the conservation, maintenance and preservation of public land, which is visited by many people and is a responsibility we all share”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP).

The work covered by the contract includes forestry treatments, clearing through slashing, thinning and pruning (including the removal of invasive species to improve forest health and pre-

One of the objectives set out in the contract for this service is to carry out forestry work to prevent fires in public woodlands.

adding that this is particularly important “now that we are seeing much of Spain affected by these fires, some of which are deliberate and others not”.

The mayoress also noted that the service will run for eight months: from October 1st to May 31st. “The Mijas Town Hall has never before put out to tender a contract of this nature, which will cover very specific services du-

ring this period”, explained Mata.

As the government team pointed out last May, during the execution of the work, it will not be permitted to cut, uproot, prune or damage any flora species included in the Spanish Catalogue of Threatened Species, the Andalusian catalogue, or Annex V of Law 42/2007 on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity of Animal and Plant Species of Communi-

ty Interest which require strict protection. If any species listed in these documents are encountered, prior authorisation must be requested from the Regional Government of Andalusia before any action is taken.

The document also adds that any plant waste generated must be removed or disposed of promptly, either by shredding, chipping or transfer to an authorised site.

The meat in a smash burger is cooked by pressing it against a hot griddle, forming a thin, crispy layer on the outside that keeps it juicy on the inside, creating a more intense flavour and a unique texture. That’s the theory, but if you want to try it for yourself, don’t miss The Champions Burger, a gastronomic competition featuring the best burgers in Spain, which you can visit at the Las Lagunas fairground until the 31st of August.

The event, which opened on Thursday 21st, is a paradise for lovers of these exclusive gourmet offerings, combining the most daring ingredients with inventive creations. “It is a pleasure to have the best bur-

gers here; these are people who have worked very hard, and each ingredient they use means that when we see one of these burgers, it is not a typical one. They offer such a wide range of burgers, and they comply with all health regulations, which makes this the perfect setting for young people and families in genera”, said the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP). She inaugurated the event alongside the delegate for Employment, Business and Self-Employment, Carmen Sánchez, who described The Champions Burger as “much more than a gastronomic event that showcases the creativity and talent of many people who have managed to combine

these synergies to make this an economic event from the point of view of employment and the creation of many jobs, both directly and indirectly”.

A total of 18 food trucks are taking part in this edition, where visitors can enjoy not only burgers but also chicken treats, desserts and other delicacies.

“We are very happy, we had no doubts, we knew that even though the Malaga Fair is on, it was going to work very well in Mijas because of the population, density and size. We would like to thank the people of Mijas and the local government team who have supported the event”, said José Antonio Morales, organiser of the championship. The opening of The Champions Burger was also attended by Vox councillor Eloy Belmonte, who said that “it is a source of pride for the residents of Las Lagunas to host a gastronomic event of this kind, where you can eat the best burgers in Spain and Europe”.

The event was inaugurated by the mayoress Ana Mata, the Employment Delegate Carmen Sánchez and the provincial deputy José Luis Rodríguez del Pozo.

Pórtico de Feria

The activities leading up to the 2025 Mijas Fair are already underway, with the Pórtico de Feria concert serving as proof. The event will take place on Sunday 31st of August, starting at 20:30 hours, at the Virgen de la Peña square.

This was announced on Monday 18th by the councillor for the UP in Mijas, Silvia Marín (PP), and the director of the Mijas Music Band, Francisco Valcárcel. A concert in which “everything that will be played are new works across different genres such as tangos, pasodobles, and soundtrack music. In addition, for the second part, for the first time, we will play fair music with which we are going to enjoy great medleys”, said the director of the band. In addition, the musicians also promised surprises for this second part.

For her part, Marín invited “everyone to come to the Virgen de la Peña square at 20:30 hours on the 31st of August to enjoy these melodies, notes and scores that the Mijas Music Band will offer us”. This event is being organised with great care, effort, dedication and teamwork, and, as Valcárcel said, “the result will be wonderful”.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), announced on Monday 18th that the Town Hall has now taken delivery of the Gran Parque works. The local council is therefore taking over the infrastructure, which the local executive highlights as “set to become the green area of the Costa del Sol”. “This is great news as it means the works have been completed. We have made some modifications to the initial project to improve operational efficiency and ensure that the result is what we all expect”, explained the mayoress.

Regarding the maintenance of this large infrastructure, it should be remembered that the Town Hall put it out to tender for a total of 2.7 million euros per year for three years. The tender was divided into three lots: gardening maintenance (2.35 million euros per year), security (392,000 euros) and conservation and maintenance of facilities and equip-

ment (544,000 euros). The aim is to reduce costs by distributing the operation of services across different concessions. Once the three lots have been awarded, an open day is planned so that local residents can visit the facility.

Features

The Gran Parque covers an area of 270,000 square metres, with more than 2,900 trees. The type of trees and shrubs has been changed to reduce water consumption from 1,350 cubic metres per month to around 350.

In terms of facilities, the Gran Parque includes basketball and five-a-side football pitches, a dog park in the southern area and an

amphitheatre with capacity for 1,500 people for cultural and festive activities. There are also five children’s play areas, a skate park,

Payment of taxes in the voluntary period IS

OPEN UNTIL THE 20TH OF NOVEMBER

To date, the municipal coffers have collected 52.3 million euros in IBI, vehicle tax and rubbish tax payments

As of August 19th, municipal revenue from Property Tax (IBI) stands at 45 million euros; 6 million euros from the Rubbish Collection and Solid Waste Treatment Tax and 5 million euros from the Motor Vehicle Tax (IVTM), totalling 52,392,724 euros. “The percentages have increased, we are at 65% for IBI and 70% for rubbish, although we are still close to 32% for road tax”, said the councillor for Finance at the Mijas Town Hall, Mario Bravo (PP), who reminded residents that the voluntary payment period ends on the 20th of November, after which bills will be subject to surcharges and penalties.

Pino&Pino, Andrés Pino and his Latin Orchestra, and Lázaro Contino were the stars of the evening

C.B. Last Saturday, the 16th, the Torreón de La Cala hosted one of its liveliest evenings with the celebration of Latin Night.

Organised by the Tourism Department, this event has become a municipal tradition, drawing a large audience each year to a festive atmosphere filled with music and dancing.

The evening began with the legendary duo Pino&Pino, father and son Andrés Pino, who, with their versatility on stage, introduced the audience to a variety of Spanish and Latin American musical genres.

“We give an exceptional image to the world because there are so many nationalities here that people are impressed when they hear these voices and, above all, what we Spaniards are and what we represent with this music”, explained the deputy mayor of the municipality,

Regarding these figures, Bravo wanted to “thank all those taxpayers who have made it easier for us to collect payments and, in return, receive a 5% discount”, referring to those citizens who have opted to pay these bills by direct debit (of the 52 million euros collected so far, almost 31 million euros have been collected via direct debit). He also encouraged those who have not yet done so to consider it for next year, highlighting that, “as a new feature”, this procedure can now be carried out completely “securely through the new electronic office”, rather

than, as previously, “via emails” sent to the relevant Town Hall department “where citizens had no guarantee that their data had been processed correctly”.

Although these three periodic taxes are the most significant, the Town Hall also manages fees for the occupation of public roads with tables and chairs, kiosks, noparking areas loading and unloading zones, the municipal market and bank ATMs.

How to pay taxes

There are two much quicker and more convenient ways to pay

online. With a digital certificate or electronic ID through the Electronic Office; and without a certificate, via the Pagosexpress platform, which is only valid for the payment of outstanding bills during the voluntary period.

In addition, taxes and fees can be paid in person at the Citizen Services and Tax Collection Offices of the Mijas Town Hall and at the branch offices in Las Lagunas and La Cala.

Bravo highlighted the importance of paying these taxes, which, together with “the collection of urban development

“It’s a wonderful evening, I love it. Besides, I’m of Latin American origin, so what could I do but come to an evening like this?” said attendee, Miguel Ángel Portillo, who came with his

wife, Blanca Domínguez, who added that the evening “is very pleasant, they sing wonderfully. We already knew about this event and here we are”.

The Caribbean vibe had the audience on their feet, filling the dance floor. Ana Loro, a tourist who spends her summers in Mijas, said, “I come every year and I think these events are well worth it”. Without a doubt, this is an event where, in addition to the music, local businesses also benefit.

taxes and the share of State revenue” are essential for providing various services, including the maintenance of green areas, streets, street lighting, and water supply. “All this can be seen on the Town Hall’s website in the budget section, where there is a detailed breakdown of how we spend the money received from all the residents of Mijas”, he added, noting that “the growth of the municipal register in Mijas is ensuring that this increase in revenue is constant and continuous, and we will soon reach 100,000 people”.

The Town Hall beautifies the area around the La Cala pool

The Parks and Gardens Department has used xeriscaping techniques to maximise water and energy efficiency

The Mijas Town Hall, through the Parks and Gardens Department, is improving the area around the La Cala municipal swimming pool following the completion and acceptance of the works. The work is still ongoing, as it is being carried out in several phases, but the first results are already visible. The project is based on xeriscaping principles, aiming for efficiency and savings in both water and energy. The surrounding area is being completely transformed. The opening of the municipal swimming pool in La Cala has revitalised the area, and with the arrival of users, the Town Hall saw the need to enhance and beautify the surroundings.

According to the councillor for Parks and Gardens, Daniel Goméz Teruel (PP), “after opening the swimming pool in La Cala, we saw that that the surrounding area needed a touch of colour and greenery, which is already characteristic of our municipality. We are continuing in the same vein, using lowmaintenance, fast-growing trees and plants that will provide shade quickly and enhance the area”. Specifically, a large number of flowers, shrubs and new trees have already been planted in the area, sourced from the municipal nursery, thanks to compensation for

tree felling or relocation. According to the councillor, “we have planted more than 600 oleanders grown in our municipal nursery, and we have paulownia trees, which are very fast-growing, broad-leaved trees that we obtained as compensation for felling carried out by the Town Hall. In addition, we have reused trees that were removed during the renovation of the roundabout at the entrance to La Cala”. Improvements to the area will continue for the rest of the month, with the priority being to save as much water and energy as possible, and always using drip irriga-
